Change: Obama to meet with Arizona’s governor after all; Update: L.A. County votes to boycott Arizona

posted at 8:03 pm on June 1, 2010 by Allahpundit

Three days ago he said he’d be too busy to do it. Three days later, after a weekend of stories about BP and Sestak and the Gaza flotilla and poll after poll after poll showing support for Arizona’s law, The One needs some good press. This’ll help for 24 hours.

President Obama intends to meet with Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer on Thursday, a White House official told FoxNews.com, after criticism mounted over the president’s refusal to meet her while she is in Washington this week…

Arizona state Sen. Russell Pearce, a Republican who helped draft Arizona’s SB 1070, called Obama’s refusal to meet with Brewer “an insult.”

“He’s willing to have a beerfest with an officer in Cambridge after he misspoke,” Pearce told Fox News on Tuesday, referring to a photo-op the president held last summer after he incited a feud over the bias of a police officer who arrested a black professor at the front door to his home.

“He misspoke on this bill also and he’s not willing to meet with the governor of the state of Arizona?” Pearce said.

We already know what she’s planning to say to him and we’ve got a pretty good idea of what he wants to say to her, so apart from a perfunctory statement afterwards that they both agree that more needs to be done to secure the border, don’t expect anything productive to come out of this. It’s good optics for Brewer especially, since it polishes her image as the populist messenger who’s delivering hard truths about border enforcement to an out-of-touch D.C., but The One will get a tiny bit of “see, I’m taking the problem seriously” mileage from it too. The latest numbers? 67 percent of likely voters tell Rasmussen they support sending troops to the border and 66 percent of registered voters tell Quinnipiac they want border security to have priority over assimilating illegals into American society. Even in deep blue California, 50 percent of registered voters support Arizona’s law compared to 43 percent who oppose it. If only there was a candidate running out there willing to stand up on behalf of pro-enforcement Democrats. Hmmmmm.

Update: If Obama has any inclination to do something productive at this meeting — which, I realize, he doesn’t — a gentle denunciation of this nonsense would go a long way. According to one of the polls I linked above, the current split on whether boycotts are a bad idea versus a good one is … 76/12. It’s smart politics, champ. Take advantage.

Since she has been such a strong force in Arizona, I hope she gives as good she’ll most likely get from The One.

I sense a smarmy, preachy, icy Obama during this meeting. He’ll also remind her that “I Won” and he’s “fully engaged” in the situation.

Hope she has a strong stomach to go with that backbone.

Employer Sanctions Law Appealed

The Obama administration wants Arizona’s Employer Sanctions law overturned
By Bob Bennett
(KFYI News) Lawyers for the U.S. Department of Justice have filed paperwork asking the U.S. Supreme Court to invalidate Arizona’s Employer Sanctions law, arguing that it infringes on the Immigration Reform and Control Act, passed by Congress in 1986, that specifically prohibits states and cities from imposing any civil or criminal penalties on companies for hiring illegal immigrants.

But that same law allows states to have their own “licensing or similar laws”. Lower courts, including the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled Arizona’s law fits into that exception.

At the same time, the Justice Department is considering asking a federal judge to overturn Senate Bill 1070, which makes it a state crime for an illegal immigrant to be in the country.

No word on whether the Supreme Court will hear the challenge to the employer sanctions law.

L.A. County boycott of Arizona approved by divided Board of Supervisors

Here’s and example of a total lack of character, dignity, and class… The people of California will either reject this behavior, as living in the problem rather than the solution, or they will continue their downward spiral into eventual 3rd world status.

Keemo on June 1, 2010 at 8:41 PM

June 1, 2010 – More U.S. Voters Want Arizona-Like Immigration Law, Quinnipiac University National Poll Finds

American voters say 48 – 35 percent they want their state to pass an immigration law similar to Arizona’s and by an overwhelming 76 – 12 percent they say that plans by those opposed to the law to boycott Arizona are a bad idea, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

Voters approve 51 – 31 percent of the Arizona law; think 45 – 36 percent it will reduce illegal immigration and want 66 – 26 percent immigration reform to move in the direction of stricter enforcement rather than integrating immigrants into American society, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University survey finds.

While voters say 49 – 44 percent that the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico does not make them less likely to support offshore drilling, support for offshore drilling to help America become less dependent on foreign oil is at 53 – 40 percent, down from 62 – 32 percent in an August 20, 2008, Quinnipiac University survey.

Real smart move their LA Supervisors… As if you didn’t have enough trouble on your plate. Jeez, Liberalism truly is a mental disorder.

Even in deep blue California, 50 percent of registered voters support Arizona’s law compared to 43 percent who oppose it.

There’s something very fishy about that poll.

Upon completion of the interviewing, the results were weighted slightly to more accurately reflect the total population of registered voters throughout the state. Weighting was done to regional and demographic characteristics according to known census estimates and voter-file projections; party registration was weighted to match the most recent 2010 report from the California Secretary of State.

And then there’s this.

FOR THE RECORD:
Los Angeles Times/USC poll: An article in Monday’s Section A about California voters’ opinions on Arizona’s anti-illegal immigration law did not fully describe the measure. The article said the law compels police to determine the status of people they suspect are illegal immigrants. The law applies only to people whom police have stopped for another reason. —

Gee, what a shock.

Sorry, Philly, that’s where we often “misspeak”. It ain’t the Government’s job to help people find jobs, but we often make comments like this to support a Conservative point. We’re playing the enemy’s game when we do this.

Nothing personal, but I see it all the time. “There ought to be a law…” is NOT a good conservative answer.

Nothing personal, bro.

LA County should dismantle 75% of itself to help the Free Citizens of LA. As should the State of California, the disastrous Imperial Federal Government , and every other State and Metropolis in our Federal Republic.

On the other hand, Brewer will walk out of her meeting with Junior clean of any obligation to treat the feds, Holder et. al. with anything more than the disrespect they have earned.

Gov. What she should say to Obama: “An immigration reform that gives illegal aliens a legal path to citizenship is like a Wall Street reform that gives inside traders a legal path to keeping the money”.

I think the open-borders crowd jumped the gun and blundered badly. Their whole strategy is to promise more enforcement in exchange for just one more amnesty, get the amnesty, then attack the enforcement. Lather, rinse, repeat. By attacking enforcement before getting the amnesty they’ve made it clear to the American people any enforcement promises they make as part of a grand’comprehensive reform’ are bull.

This whole thing is taking on a distinctive Orwellian tone. What sort of 1984 “double think” mindset does it require for a socialist/progressive/liberal to declare: “I support illegal immigration.” These people are so wrapped up in their bizarre universe they fail to see the utter insanity of their words.

Question: What is so special about these 11 million illegal Mexican immigrants that they are somehow ‘deserving’ of special treatment for having broken our laws – as opposed to the other 5-6 billion people who would come to the U.S. in a heartbeat if there were a way.

Is this what our immigration policy has come down to: If you can land on 2 feet inside the United States you’re home free, and ‘We The People’ will provide you with all of the benefits of the welfare state. If we feel obliged to do it for the present 11 million illegal Mexicans, then, pray tell, why aren’t we obliged to do the same for the rest of the world’s citizens who can find their way into this country?

They are VERY wrong. No one has ever attempted to subjugate a country with 200+ years of freedom like this country. It WILL NOT HAPPEN.

We just celebrated Memorial Day. Does anyone reading this site think that America will lay down and take it from a few thousand of these metrosexual commies?

I don’t believe it, I won’t believe it, and our dead heroes aren’t buying it either.

Full Disclosure: I’m in Brazil on business, and couldn’t visit my father’s grave in Arlington yesterday. The “President” of my Country could have, but chose to attend a personal party instead.

Yeah, I’m grumpy about that. But not a bit surprised.

I predict a media firestorm if she exits by the trash bins like the dalai lama.

Of course he will try to scold her and spank her and make her change her mind! He is, afterall, the one, the golden, the blessed Barack!.

I hope she verbally castrates him (but the MSM won’t show it.)
Then, I hope she whips out a knife and does it literally.

(Sigh! A girl can dream, can’t she??)

Ooops, Allah, finger slipped. Meant Castigate, not Castrate, and fife, not knife. Finally, it should have read, lyrically, not literally.
Dang! Should have proofread more careful-like. Sorry!

I’d write on that palm of her hand, “Sarah Palin says hi!” :)
