Change: Obama to meet with Arizona’s governor after all; Update: L.A. County votes to boycott Arizona

posted at 8:03 pm on June 1, 2010 by Allahpundit

Three days ago he said he’d be too busy to do it. Three days later, after a weekend of stories about BP and Sestak and the Gaza flotilla and poll after poll after poll showing support for Arizona’s law, The One needs some good press. This’ll help for 24 hours.

President Obama intends to meet with Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer on Thursday, a White House official told FoxNews.com, after criticism mounted over the president’s refusal to meet her while she is in Washington this week…

Arizona state Sen. Russell Pearce, a Republican who helped draft Arizona’s SB 1070, called Obama’s refusal to meet with Brewer “an insult.”

“He’s willing to have a beerfest with an officer in Cambridge after he misspoke,” Pearce told Fox News on Tuesday, referring to a photo-op the president held last summer after he incited a feud over the bias of a police officer who arrested a black professor at the front door to his home.

“He misspoke on this bill also and he’s not willing to meet with the governor of the state of Arizona?” Pearce said.

We already know what she’s planning to say to him and we’ve got a pretty good idea of what he wants to say to her, so apart from a perfunctory statement afterwards that they both agree that more needs to be done to secure the border, don’t expect anything productive to come out of this. It’s good optics for Brewer especially, since it polishes her image as the populist messenger who’s delivering hard truths about border enforcement to an out-of-touch D.C., but The One will get a tiny bit of “see, I’m taking the problem seriously” mileage from it too. The latest numbers? 67 percent of likely voters tell Rasmussen they support sending troops to the border and 66 percent of registered voters tell Quinnipiac they want border security to have priority over assimilating illegals into American society. Even in deep blue California, 50 percent of registered voters support Arizona’s law compared to 43 percent who oppose it. If only there was a candidate running out there willing to stand up on behalf of pro-enforcement Democrats. Hmmmmm.

Update: If Obama has any inclination to do something productive at this meeting — which, I realize, he doesn’t — a gentle denunciation of this nonsense would go a long way. According to one of the polls I linked above, the current split on whether boycotts are a bad idea versus a good one is … 76/12. It’s smart politics, champ. Take advantage.

This whole thing is taking on a distinctive Orwellian tone. What sort of 1984 “double think” mindset does it require for a socialist/progressive/liberal to declare: “I support illegal immigration.” These people are so wrapped up in their bizarre universe they fail to see the utter insanity of their words.

Question: What is so special about these 11 million illegal Mexican immigrants that they are somehow ‘deserving’ of special treatment for having broken our laws – as opposed to the other 5-6 billion people who would come to the U.S. in a heartbeat if there were a way.

Is this what our immigration policy has come down to: If you can land on 2 feet inside the United States you’re home free, and ‘We The People’ will provide you with all of the benefits of the welfare state. If we feel obliged to do it for the present 11 million illegal Mexicans, then, pray tell, why aren’t we obliged to do the same for the rest of the world’s citizens who can find their way into this country?

My responses:

1-They are not any more special than any other human beings; my beef with them, being Latina as I am, is that they take advantage of the system, lie around, fake stuff in order to get what they want. In the meantime, the lap dog called US of A gets a belly rub.

2-To earn the welfare state as many have posted on other topics, they SHALL NOT TRESPASS any US state. To allow such disdain for their current citizens, and for those who DO study, apply, “take the ticket” and take the oath are the ones that the US of A are really betraying by allowing this to happen. So that lap dog is yappin’ at the wrong people.

What’s worse, Americans are starting to be against each other like North Vs. South. For illegals? It’s not worth it, and states in general should stay together and not take positions on matters of law that they are violating consciously. Gotta wonder for how many pesos.

What’s good for illegal Mexicans yes, it’s good for those illegal terrorists that come from the Middle East ready to attack us; but this lap dog will roll its belly up without realizing he is being fitted for a suicide bomb.

Wise up, Americans! Protecting your own enemies will get you nowhere; while others are born Americans can’t even have a say in all this crap.

Ooooh, Allah called Obama “champ”. Bodyslam, point to AP!

He does that quite often, which proves over and over how curageous he is. Obama needs to be ridiculed, often.

Go Mr. Kaus. All others are Mickey Mice, from both sides.

Full Disclosure: I’m in Brazil on business, and couldn’t visit my father’s grave in Arlington yesterday. The “President” of my Country could have, but chose to attend a personal party instead.

Yeah, I’m grumpy about that. But not a bit surprised.

Wow. if Democrats in California wanted to turn their state into a toilet bowl any faster, they couldn’t do a better job of it than this. Feel free L.A. to boycott Arizona, jujst shut your pie holewhen the rest of the ENTIRE country boycotts you. Your going to miss those millions the union was counting on you to embezell for them

it boggles the mind just how stupid these people are. it’s a miracle they all have not electrocuted themselves by blow drying their hair in the bathtub

Niteowl45 on June 1, 2010 at 10:57 PM

Of course there is no way Obama’s mind will be changed about SB 1070. One of the speakers at the Phoenix protest march on Saturday was the International Executive Vice President of SEIU.

SEIU and the AFL-CIO (Richard Trumka spoke as well) are actively courting illegal immigrants and would like to bring them in to not only the unions, but the Democrat party as well. And we all know where Obama stands with SEIU. The troops to the border are just a token to make it look like he’s doing something while he and his supporters will insist on “immigration reform.”

It’s good optics for Brewer especially, since it polishes her image as the populist messenger

When you say populist, do you mean Socialist? She raised taxes to continue to fund government largess when we are needing massive cuts.

Brewer is only using this to ride herself back into office, an office she would have lost to the other Republican candidates, except that she used this to cover her 18% tax hike to pay for bloated pensions and social programs.

If you support her in general, you are supporting a moderate.

Lord, you who suppor her, you guys are being played

Tim Burton on June 2, 2010 at 12:14 AM

Oh I forgot to mention that Brewer’s raising of taxes will fix NOTHING.

All the materials that I used to purchase from LA County for my art projects will be purchased from some other venders. I say boycott anything that comes from LA County to include whatever the movie and entertainment industry put out.

As someone noted earlier, Jamiel Shaw was unavailable for comment.

Obama’s goal of dividing and conquering America is right on schedule. The liberals have driven a stake in the heart of our country and now the twisting begins.

I wish I could boycott LA county. But I never go to the garbage that comes out of Hollywood, watch almost no TV and never have the desire to visit LA. I’ve been boycotting all along and never knew it.

This so amazes me. He’s looking more and more like a loser. People hate one thing more than a politician who doesn’t agree with them, and that’s one who waffles constantly based on polls.

We ALL hate that type.

AnninCA on June 2, 2010 at 8:47 AM

Watch out LA the lights could be dimming soon.

Kissmygrits on June 2, 2010 at 9:02 AM

Please do it. Pull the plug, AZ.

Please avoid Disneyland and summer movies, too. You wouldn’t be missing much in any case.

I think most of us stranded CA conservatives will be happy to suffer the summer heat with rolling blackouts and no A/C, if it means that the loony libs who have run away with the state will finally get the spanking they deserve. And if our lawns dry up, too, oh well — sux to be us!

Mary in LA on June 2, 2010 at 1:01 PM

Speaking of summer movies: Without knowing anything about the forthcoming movie “Salt” except that it looks like a ripoff of “The Fugitive”, I am highly suspicious of the “Who is Salt?/Salt must die” ad campaign, in that I think it’s an obvious shot at “who is John Galt?”. (They could have named the character Pepper, or Mustard, or Aioli, or anything else.)

So (bringing this back on topic), looks like yet another summer movie to boycott. Starve the beast!
