Versus America

posted at 1:15 pm on May 30, 2010 by Doctor Zero

One of the most striking moments in our increasingly surreal politics came when congressional Democrats leaped to their feet and applauded a foreign leader as he trashed the state of Arizona and its immigration law.  The foreigner in question was the president of Mexico, a barely functional kleptocracy with vastly more restrictive immigration laws, enforced by a corrupt police force that has been known to beat and rob undocumented aliens.  Arizona’s immigration law was prompted by the flood of people desperately seeking to escape Felipe Calderon’s miserable governance.

The sense of alienation between the United States and its Democrat Party grows steadily deeper.  If you ask someone on the right side of our political spectrum whether they believe America is the greatest country on earth, you would most likely receive instant agreement.  Ask the same question of someone from the Left, and the answer will probably be negative, or at least heavily qualified.  If they agree at all, they’ll probably need at least five or ten minutes to get all the disclaimers and caveats out of the way… followed by the angry insistence they love their country.

Asserting the United States is the greatest country on Earth is not the same thing as declaring it flawless, or demeaning other nations as worthless.  Even if you stipulate both of these points, you will rarely convince a liberal to concede its greatness.  Most of them aren’t lying when they say they love it.  The issue is the difference between love and reverence.

Liberals see themselves as enlightened crusaders, embarked on a quest to transform a fundamentally flawed America.  They swoon when they hear Barack Obama speak of his “transformative” agenda.  The “hope and change” mantra conjures an image of helpless little people waiting to be rescued.  The transformation they have in mind is coercive – they’re not talking about transforming society by giving people more freedom to do what they want, or allowing them to express their will through greater amounts of income protected from taxation.  It might be possible to rationalize inflicting forcible change on something you love, but you wouldn’t take that attitude toward something you revere.

Part of the great American transformation involves the destruction of capitalism, which liberals view as beyond the control of ideology, and therefore unjust.  Ever since the beginning of the financial crisis that boiled through the 2008 elections, the Left has spoken frequently of the “failure” of capitalism.  Obama has acted repeatedly to nationalize, or shut down, industries and markets he finds inferior to the wisdom of the State.  A small minority of people are unhappy with their health insurance?  Private insurance becomes a thing of the past, and when public insurance inevitably becomes a disaster, private health care will be erased.  A disastrous accident occurs on a drilling platform in the Gulf of Mexico?  The entire offshore drilling industry is abolished, faster than the porn sites can be cleared from the Web browsers over at the Minerals Management Service.

America was born a land of liberty and responsibility, where citizens would own both their time and ideas.  Her government was obliged to focus on its duties in the present, rather than designing the future.  The future is the exclusive property of free men, not the State.  The government does not have the right to decide when freedom has failed, and should be discarded.  Our Constitution was written as a shield for every American, strong enough to shatter all misguided dreams of social engineering and redistribution.  Protected by that shield, we see “jobs” as acts of voluntary cooperation for mutual prosperity, not a limited resource to be doled out by the government.  We look for opportunity from each other, not assignments from our ruling class.  We will decide where to take our custom, how to invest our time, and when to turn away from a failed enterprise.  We are not waiting for the State to fulfill our needs, or write our destiny.

As more Americans awaken to their birthright of restrained government at the service of a strong population, they become champions of a nation theyrevere… and enemies of an ideology that believes all wisdom and virtue reside in the coercive power of the State.  As this ideology reaches the ugly and bankrupt end of its century-long existence, its nervous acolytes are desperately in need of validation.  That’s why they were so eager to hear a hostile foreigner describe their domestic enemies as hateful and greedy.

The passage of ObamaCare dispelled the myth of the moderate Democrat.  The illusion of the patriotic Democrat died in their thunderous applause for Felipe Calderon.  The Democrats obviously find more in common with this shadowy foreign ally than the people of Arizona… or the wider American population, which supports Arizona’s immigration law by lopsided majorities.  Any sense of unconditional loyalty to the United States is obviously not distributed evenly across all fifty of them.

When we embrace liberty and responsibility, we see our countrymen as partners, employers, customers, and honorable competitors.  It becomes easy to revere the great nation that sailed against the tides of history to destroy imperialism, fascism, and communism… as it will defeat the challenge of moral and intellectual exhaustion that swept the final generation of American socialists into power over the past decade.  We can be at peace with those who disagree, because none of us has the power to compel submission.

Those who embrace collectivist economics, and political dominion over every aspect of our lives, will inevitably come to see the stubborn and disobedient conservators of the old America as enemies to be despised and defeated.  Even their most high-minded and well-intentioned designs can only be fulfilled by forcing dissenters to participate.  Barack Obama and his party have a lot of big plans that require the meek compliance of people who think like me… and we aim to misbehave.  Small wonder the Democrats, and a sad number of Republican attendants, find themselves more comfortable in the company of foreign leaders who have already secured the abject submission of their impoverished subjects.

Barack Obama and his party have a lot of big plans that require the meek compliance of people who think like me… and we aim to misbehave.

Damn right we do! Unlike Obama and his insane clown posse, we have the blood of the Founders running through our veins (some of us literally, others metaphorically), and like them, we are not a compliant lot. We will not roll over for tyrannical statists — no matter the skin color or Ivy League pedigree. We will actively fight, to the death if necessary, their attempts to destroy our country from within. And as the support for AZ shows, there are a lot more of us than there are of them.

Weight of Glory on May 30, 2010 at 1:34 PM

“We aim to misbehave” is a great line–a slightly paraphrased quote from Joss Whedon’s Firefly, I believe, and as good a response to federal hubris and the authoritarian mindset as the Gadsen flag.

What we are seeing, I think, is the realization among many–and not just those of us on the conservative right–that the far-left leadership of the Democratic Party which now runs the federal government views us not as political opponents but as hated enemies. Witness, for example, the first major report issued by the Department of Homeland Security after President Obama assumed office. That analysis had nothing to do maniacal jihadists intent on mass murder and the acquisition of easily portable WMDs, oh no. It was about the danger presented by the radicalization of veterans newly returned from foreign battlefields.

They paint us as racists and see us as God-and-gun-clinging reactionaries, obstacles to the global socialist utopia they dream about, a world of rainbows and butterflies and social justice and the pretty flowers pick themselves.

When a foreign human scumbag trashes a state on the floor of Congress and the demonrats give him a standing ovation, they no longer should be considered an American party. Obuma is the first president in history to declare war on an individual state. If E PLURIBUS UNUM means anything, the states should come together and take our country back from the usurpers who have lied and deceived their way to power.

I’ve been calling them traitors ever since they voted to use force against Iraq, and then backpedaled when they realized that the far left would never take a Republican President’s side against a vicious dictator, serious threat to US or not.

A Liberal cannot accept a single ideal from the following:

O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for pilgrim feet
Whose stern impassioned stress
A thoroughfare of freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God mend thine every flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law!

O beautiful for heroes proved
In liberating strife.
Who more than self their country loved
And mercy more than life!
America! America!
May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness
And every gain divine!

O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for halcyon skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the enameled plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till souls wax fair as earth and air
And music-hearted sea!

O beautiful for pilgrims feet,
Whose stem impassioned stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till paths be wrought through
wilds of thought
By pilgrim foot and knee!

O beautiful for glory-tale
Of liberating strife
When once and twice,
for man’s avail
Men lavished precious life!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till selfish gain no longer stain
The banner of the free!

O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till nobler men keep once again
Thy whiter jubilee!

This is a brilliant commentary! The biggest insult to the U.S. is not what Calderon said, but the facts that he was certainly encouraged to say what he said by Obama, that Obama had trashed Arizona the day before for his benefit, and that half of Congress as well as the cabinet members in attendance, all Democrats, rose and applauded his remarks.

We are being governed by an elite that has nothing but comtempt and loathing for the average American. I am a professor and and assure persons here that most of my colleagues are to the left of Obama and basically contemptuous of the U.S., even though my university is more apolitical than most.

The Republicans should engage in a national advertising campaign for congressional seats that intersperses Calderon’s immigration remarks to Congress, Obama’s previous apologies about American “bigotry” to Calderon, and the Democrats standing up and clapping Calderon’s trashing of Arizona. More than 70 percent of Americans are deeply offended by all of this disloyal behavior, but the MSM hides the true feelings of the elite from the average American.

The entire basis of this essay is mistaken because it assumes some sort of intelligent thought on the part of the liberals described in it. Dr. Zero gives liberals and their ideas too much credit.

There are only two things you need to know about liberals: 1) They’re stupid and incapable of a coherant argument
2) they hate conservatives with the passion of a thousand suns.

That’s pretty much it. They don’t know what America is, much love it. Ask one. Their opinion of this country is based on who is president. Seriously. The only time they even think about their feelings for this country is when somebody accuses them of hating it and that makes them mad because they see hate in everything but themselves. Everything they believe is true, so there is no way it can be called hate.

That really is it.

Liberals see themselves as enlightened crusaders, embarked on a quest to transform a fundamentally flawed America.

Liberals love the idea of what they want to turn America into, not the principles and ideals it was founded upon. “Living Breathing Constitution” to them means whatever they deem it to mean. They make it up as they go to benefit themselves and ensure their re-election which generally means promising people lots of things at the expense of others.

Yakko77 on May 30, 2010 at 5:21 PM

First of all, to Vegas Rick – Calderon is not a scumbag. As anyone, who’s politically astute, would figure out, the Democrats are running this country and they will let him get away with this.

One of the reasons Democrats do this stuff is we split the responsibility for it so they keep doing what works for them. I lay all the responsiblity for this with our illustrious “free press”. If Republicans had done something like this, the headline in the Washington Post would have been, “Republicans applaud foreign leader as he trashes our country.”

The Democrats would never act this way if it weren’t for the press. Name one MSM outlet that’s supporting the Arizona immigration law. I can’t name one, can you? Regretably, the media still have many people who rely on them for the facts in a story and they’re not fulfilling their end of the compact. They’re protected from the constitution, not to be the propaganda wing of the Democratic Party, but to inform the public of the good, the bad, and the ugly.

So, by calling Felipe Calderon a “scumbag” you alienate many people and hide the responsibility of the real culprits in this whole mess.

Other than that, good job.

bflat879 on May 30, 2010 at 5:33 PM

Dr. Zero: With respect, I think you are making a miscalculation. Perhaps I am mistaken, but your post today seems to be based on this equation:

* Republicans = Conservatives
* Democrats = Liberals

That is patently untrue. While I agree that the congressional Democrats are not true “moderates”, these representatives are do not represent the entirety of the Democratic Party.

I say this as a registered Democrat. I say this as a co-founder of the Southern California Tax Revolt Coalition — one of the largest Tea Party entities in the nation. I will also point out that one of your conservative icons, Victor Davis Hanson is like me — a California Democrat.

I would like to point out my many efforts in spreading the message of liberty and capitalism globally, as I do here in discussing the incipient EUROPEAN TEA PARTY movement (they are planning a rally in BRUSSELS, BELBIUM, VP Biden’s “Capital of the Free World): http://www.sdnn.com/sandiego/2010-05-27/blog/a-more-perfect-union/eastman-the-tea-party-is-going-international-baby

You will find many conservatives among Democrats, especially Catholics (such as myself, who has spent much time informing like-minded members of my party about the realities of the Tea Party movement). These Democrats would not have stood up to applaud the Mexican president. And I will also point out that, since the Pew Poll indicates over 70% of Americans support SB1070, a fair number of Democrats have got to be of the same opinion as you.

“The Myth of the Moderate Democrat” is a needlessly divisive stance. Why, at the time when we liberty-minded Americans must come together to defeat the congressional applauders in November, would you negate the efforts of people in the Democratic party as engaged in this process as many in the Republican Party?

I hope I have made the case that there are America-loving moderates who are Democrats — they just don’t happen to be working in Washington D.C. Yet. :)

Well, Mutnodjmet, there can’t be many moderate Democrats in California, otherwise, between them and the Republicans, they could actually win something. If there are moderate Democrats, they either aren’t electing anyone or they’re MINO’s.

It’s sort of like the Pro-life Democrat. They caved on the health care legislation, leading us to believe that the “pro-life democrat” is no more.

Looking at the legislation that California passes, you really have to wonder how much power a moderate Democrat really has there. I’m not sure a Chris Christie could help California because their voters, given the same opportunity as New Jersey voters, turned it down.

I pity people that have to live in the People’s Republic of California, it just keeps getting worse every day. I moved from Taxachusetts to Florida and, so far, we have enough control that they can’t get too crazy down here.

I’m sorry, it’s going to take a Conservative Republican (a whole bunch of Conservative Republicans) to solve the problems California has. Good Luck, bud.

The “hope and change” mantra conjures an image of helpless little people waiting to be rescued. The transformation they have in mind is coercive – they’re not talking about transforming society by giving people more freedom to do what they want, or allowing them to express their will through greater amounts of income protected from taxation.

The tools that the left uses are coercive as well. Political correctness censors freedom of speech, and is enforced with a manufactured hysteria meant as punishment.

Thuggish union activities aren’t even voluntary for the union members themselves, and the intent to intimidate is purposefully clear.

Media complicity is collusive with the left and abusive of the truth while at the same time denigrating conservative principles.

Union controlled public education indoctrinates with a groupthink discipline while brooming inconvenient historical facts for leftist agendas.

This marxist group uses these tools as a force multiplier to imply a nonexistent majority with lies as it’s mortar and coercive legislation as the brick wall of tyranny.
They need to be turned out of their jobs once and for all.

Great thought provoking and inspirational stuff DZ.

ontherocks on May 30, 2010 at 7:08 PM

…followed by the angry insistence they love their country.
The issue is the difference between love and reverence.

The problem is that lefties don’t love their country. They love where they were born.
America is not a geographical location, but as de Tocqueville called it “The experiment called Anglo-America”.
What makes America America is that document that the radical left needs to be malleable enough to cover any and all things required to destroy it and the country it forms. And yet, they show a singular lack of understanding when it comes to the very simple language of the 2nd and 10th Amendments.
Case in point: One of our Congresswomen back here in Minnesota, Betty McCullom (D CD-4) was asked once if there was anything the Constitution prohibited Congress from doing. Her answer: “No. Nothing I can think of .”
Need I say anything more?

“The Myth of the Moderate Democrat” is a needlessly divisive stance.

Mutnodjmet on May 30, 2010 at 5:36 PM

-
The moderate Democrat has been going extint since Bill Clinton was elected for a second term.

During his presidency he was accused of adultery, sexual harassment, sexual assault, and rape.

-
There were very few dems who truly put politics aside with Clinton, and his defense was the turning away of the average dem from defending America and justice, and instead toward pursuing (or at least enabling) the leftist agenda at all costs.
-
The fact that after all his lying and worse… and Hillary’s part in all that… that she would come this close to being the dem Presidential candidate… and that someone would still buy anything the dems say… is beyond sanity (and proof that the problem is pretty much with all democrats).
-
The election of Barry the One, while Pelosi and Reid are in control of the House and Senate is the culmination of years of attempting to have a perfect storm condition where the left can ignore all opposition to their rule by theft and plantation Socialist Plan. We currently have a thug government of the Dem Party, by the Democrat Party, for the Democrat Party.
-
Any true moderates left on that side of the two-party system post-Clinton have jumped ship over the past 18 months. If you’re still registered as a dem, believe in most of the dem agenda, think Barry just needs a chance, believe they are the party of choice(s), donate in anyway to, or support the Democrat Party at all (even by just staying a member)… you’re not a moderate anything.

Mutnodjmet on May 30, 2010 at 5:36 PM

Hogwash. As in, fantasy, bullcrappery, exaggeration to a point of untruth.

The Democratic Party has in it’s very party platform (skeleton and DNA of that which defines a political party) that it is pro-abortion.

No Catholic can ever declare and maintain as a Democrat and call themselves a Catholic, except the phony kind, the cafeteria kind, the Marxist “social justice” kind.

You’re here trying to puff more helium in your balloon overhead that you’re relying on to hold yourself above the reality of what you’re supporting and why.

Trying to justify yourself and others as being “conservative” because you’re Democrats involved in “Tea Party” this/that is simply insulting to yourselves (bad ethics, highly noticable to others) and to the Tea Party movement AND to that theology you pretend to be associated with.

Lourdes on May 30, 2010 at 7:34 PM

I hope I have made the case that there are America-loving moderates who are Democrats — they just don’t happen to be working in Washington D.C. Yet. :)

Mutnodjmet on May 30, 2010 at 5:36 PM

Moreover, you’ve earlier claimed that you’re “conservative” and now that you’re “moderate” and I get the impression that you’re trying to be anything that will save you face while not displaying the character adequate enough not to lend support (or otherwise, grant it) to causes, legislation and activities that directly erode and contradict those principles (and that theology) you claim association with.

IF you’re “fiscally conservative” there is no way you can maintain being a Democrat, or, if you’re going to maintain such, then you’re lying about being fiscally conservative. Take a look (even a glance on any day of the week) at the legislative history (and current doings) of the Democratic Party AND it’s members: not — not even by a light year — close to being moderate OR fiscally responsible, much moreso fiscally conservative.

I read a number of comments by people claiming to be “catholic” leading up to the last Presidential election. Many, like the ghastly hypocrite, Nancy Pelosi, like to take cover under this identity while doing their ceremonies, funding abortions, “protecting” the abortion industry, promoting the eradication of the U.S. national sovereignity, sucking the lifeblood from the personal property of others without, customarily, their permission and so much more, these are not the ethics nor the behavior of any Catholic.

Somewhere there are priests who fail to point out to parishoners that sins ex-communicate sinners from the Church when they are persistent and “obstinate” — in Pelosi’s case, in John Kerry’s case, in Ted Kennedy’s case, certainly in Chris Dodd’s case, in your case and others like you, REGARDLESS of how righteous the sales pitch may be about the politics engaged in, and then take the politics themselves into consideration and there certainly is an affront to God.

Be a Catholic, repent of your sins, and start living your principles. Claiming you’re Catholic while maintaining as a Democrat is not a believable nor sincere path to do so.

I’m a moderate Democrat and Tea Party Patriot.
I am not a myth.
I have voted Dem for 21 out of the 22 yrs since I turned 18.
I am a Big Dawg fan, I know, I know.
I am in Gen X.
I am a Hillary supporter whose eyes were opened by the 08 primary coverage.
I began watching FOX,
I opened my ears and not just my mouth.
I listened and learned.
I attended a Tax Day Tea Party on April 15, 2009.
I have been ‘agitating’ for change from Dem Control to GOP Control of Congress ever since.
I learned as a wee baby Dem to be passionate about my politics and I still am.
I have raised my voice with the Tea Party Patriots to get this country back to basics, the Constitution, limited government, the rights of the individual, free market capitalism,
I have always loved America and the free market.
I enjoyed my 20s with Big Dawg post 94 governing as a small govt, tax cutting, capital market expanding Democrats.
That is why millions of us have been voting Dem, we were very young with Carter and Reagan and IMO a lot of us had never really SEEN an ole time TAX AND SPEND AND TAX SOME MORE Democrat like Obama, Pelosi and Reid given free rein (or as they would saY reign, lol)
Anyway, we are not a ‘myth’. I wouldnt trust anyone who went from Dem to GOP without being a moderate, not unless they had a near death epiphany of some sort to give them a ‘radical’ shift in thinking like that (unless maybe they were audited that would probably do it, lol)
anyway, we are real, casting aspersions on us for not towing the line on all conservative positions isnt making us any less real.
Same thing to me as the MSM calling tea partiers astroturf
just b/c you dont know one or dont understand it doesnt mean we dont exist.
Most GOPers I know who write blogs that I read were former Dems, how do these folks transition? wake up one day with Prty line GOP conversion? I dont think so, they transitioned through ‘moderateness’
sorry for the length but I thought you’d like to hear from one of we mythical Dem moderates

The passage of ObamaCare dispelled the myth of the moderate Democrat. The illusion of the patriotic Democrat died in their thunderous applause for Felipe Calderon.

These claims are not valid. Even though I’m nearly libertarian in my economic thinking, making healthcare accessible to everyone is to my mind the most attractive item in the entire Democratic agenda. And I don’t think it’s just me. In my conversations with Democrats, they seem to agree with me. I could see why the Democratic congressmen would vote for just about any health care bill, if they thought failure to do so would mean no chance of success for another four decades.

Also, there were Democrats who did not applaud Calderon. Yes, it is a terrible fact that most did. Still, my understanding is that more Democratic Congressmen didn’t applaud Calderon than the number of good men required for HaShem to not destroy Sodom. (“HaShem” is the appropriate Jewish name for God in political conversations.)

My opinions are utterly irrelevant here. (I happen to loathe Obamacare.) I’m describing what would have motivated even reasonable Democrats to vote for Obamacare.

I know that the fanatics will treat you as a criminal, but every reasonable person knows that it’s a good idea to understand the motivations of people you disagree with. It’s the definition of “reasonable”.

ginaswo on May 30, 2010 at 9:05 PM

@ginaswo,
I don’t claim to speak for DOCTOR ZERO, but my interpretation of his article is that there are no moderate Democrat politicians. And by that fact, those citizens that once where in the “moderate democrat” category no longer have a party or representation. Therefore, that “moderate democrat” classification of citizen can no longer exist. The democrat party of yesterday is long gone.

So, if you are a democrat today, you are a “social democrat” at best.

JeffVader on May 31, 2010 at 3:34 AM

If you are not a socialist/progressive, and are a democrat, you are a moron at best.

Slowburn on May 31, 2010 at 6:06 AM

Thanks, Zero. No one can love their country who sees it as such a failure as the democrats do, except in the pitying, helpless way that a mother loves her incarcerated, drug-addicted daughter. Democrats are not proud of their country, and they shrink whenever they see the flag flying.

GTR640 on May 31, 2010 at 7:34 AM

Democrats are not proud of their country, and they shrink whenever they see the flag flying.

Democrats are ashamed to be Americans, while millions around the world would risk death to become what they despise.

The root of their shame is that being liberals, they believe that failure is noble and weakness is a virture, and of course Americans are rather stubbornly neither. And since a liberal’s deepest secret desire is to be led, they will never question the motives of those who preach failure.

drunyan8315 on May 31, 2010 at 8:41 AM

This just set the stage for making the middle east a “nuclear free zone”. Hmmm… the only country with nukes is the one that EVERYONE ELSE in the region wishes to destroy. Our federal government is either feckless and incompetent or intentionally taking us on a path with very dire consequences.

In an earlier war in the middle east that Israel was close to losing, they HAD nukes in the air. I don’t think anyone really knows what they have today. I do know that this administration keeps pushing them into a smaller and smaller corner and making their enemies bolder and bolder. At any moment, they could (again) decide that Israel can be beaten and eliminated. When that happens, a nuclear response is unavoidable.

Bonus points for the Firefly reference.

And yes, I know of no moderate Democrats currently serving in Congress: the ones who aren’t hardcore leftist ideologues can be bought by the ones who are, so in the end, the effect is the same.

And not to be the voice of doom or anything, but does anyone else feel like some sort of collapse (both economic and cultural) is imminent in 2011 or sooner? How does that then affect the 2012 election? Do people turn back to Obama out of fear, or do the recognize his failure and kick his butt to the curb? Do the Dems break with history and nominate someone else? That strikes me as unlikely, but still, I’m curious. Thoughts?

I do revere the American ideal; the notion that all men are created equal. I long for a restrained government that won’t interfere with an individual’s right to pursue his own happiness. These are ideas worth reverence. These are ideas worth fighting for. In a world where only tyrants held sway the American recognition of a divine right to freedom protected by limited government was and is miraculous. Why can’t you see that?

The elected officials of the government of the United States of America feel closer ties to the Executives of foreign governments than they do to the People to whom they are supposed to be responsible. (Some of the SCOTUS Justices share this scurrilous fault.)
