Dem rep: Obama will create more jobs in 2010 than entire Bush presidency
posted at 2:20 pm on May 28, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
Yes, Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz D-FL) was apparently serious yesterday when she told Stuart Varney that the Obama administration would create as many jobs in 2010 as during “the entire Bush presidency,” a moment that comes at about 1:50 in the clip below. This claim came in response to Varney’s challenge to the incumbent Democrat as to how she will explain her vote to spend a trillion dollars when it failed to achieve its objective in keeping unemployment below 8%. Wasserman-Schulz does a strange double down in reply. But was she right?
For the record, employment grew during the Bush years from 137,778,000 in January 2001 to 142,221,000 in January 2009, a net growth of 4,443,000 jobs over the course of the Bush years. The economy has added 1,663,000 jobs this year (from 137,792,000 in December 2009 to 139,455,000 in April 2010), over four months. At that rate, assuming the same rate of job growth (as Wasserman-Schultz herself set the parameters of her claim), that would predict a growth of almost 5 million jobs — which puts Wasserman-Schultz’s argument in the ballpark.
However, it’s worth pointing out that the numbers on private employment, excluding government employment, don’t look nearly as good. At one time during the Bush years, private employment had expanded by almost 4 million, reaching its peak in December 2007. That was true despite dealing with a couple of recessionary periods during the first term of his presidency. The resulting collapse wiped out all of those gains, however, and left Bush with a deficit of 673,000 jobs. In contrast, Obama has lost over 3.3 million jobs in private employment since the start of his term on top of what was lost in the final year of the Bush presidency. In 2010, private employment has only climbed by 483,000 jobs. At that rate, it will take 28 months to restore just the private-sector jobs lost during the Obama administration — and another 32 months to get back to the peak of private employment during the Bush years.
That also doesn’t account for population growth, either. An employment level of 115,574,000 private-sector jobs in December 2007 will not be the equivalent of having that number in 2016.
In short, Wasserman-Schultz may be technically correct in this claim, thanks to aggressive government expansion and hiring, but it’s a seriously misleading argument. (h/t: HA reader Yossi Kudan)

Well, actually it’s because the massive layoffs that occurred at the end of 2008 were during the Bush presidency.
So, the Obama administration was actually given the perfect situation to make claims such as the one she makes.
Extremely low employment numbers at the beginning of his term due to a temporary crisis. Nothing but upside to look forward to for the next 4 years.

Correction: During 16 months of the Obama presidency, three-quarters as many jobs were LOST as were gained during the entire Bush presidency.

I had a census “worker” call me yesterday evening to check up on the census form I turned in the very day after I received it.
He spent 10 minutes asking me question after question in an effort to determine whether I had any additional people in the house they could count and it was very apparent he was trying to root out any illegals, homeless or other shady individuals that they could count in addition to the three legal and normal people I have living in the house.
What a waste of time. This census is costing us many, many more billions than it should and the results will probably be rigged anyway by the Obama “administration”.

Obama declares an end to Bush’s ‘war on terror’
WASHINGTON – U.S. President Barack Obama has declared George W. Bush’s “war on terror” over and said it would be replaced with a softer approach to foreign policy stressing partnership and diplomacy.
In a 52-page national security strategy released Thursday, he outlined a much broader set of priorities and methods than the tightly focused determination to eradicate Islamic extremism by any means possible and alone if necessary

If these figures are right (and private sector jobs were, net, a negative 683,000 jobs during the Bush years), techically Obama has already created more private sector jobs during 2010 (483,000) than were created, on a net basis, during the Bush years.
[The database that Ed linked to is not available, so I can't verify these figures.]

Looking at the actual data, Obama hasn’t broke even for the number of jobs since taking office. It was at 140,436,000 in January 2009 and in April 2010 it sits at 139,302,000.
The peak employment number while he’s been in office was 141,055,00 in July of 2009.
The peak employment number while Bush was in office was 147,315,000 in July of 2008.
But so far Obama has lost jobs while being president.
ButterflyDragon on May 28, 2010 at 2:47 PM
There’s not going to be any strong job creation until ObamaCare is repealed, cr*p & trade is taken off the table and the Bush tax cuts are renewed and better yet, Congress passes more tax cuts.
Ed did forget to mention the Bush tax cuts which were a big part of the recovery and the healthy job creation under Bush.

Well, instead of wasting all this time double-checking figures they’re going to throw out anyway, why don’t they just assume that the people who want government drones to piss of and leave them alone are under-represented? Easy to adjust for that: double the number of Republicans in each district.

I’m not sure how that’s a fair comparison. You seem to be taking net jobs during the Bush years but not for Obama.
Esthier on May 28, 2010 at 2:56 PM
This jobs claim must be a Democrat talking point.
May 23, Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace:
Tim Kaine “In a very tough time the president and members of Congress have done heavy lifting. We’ve had to build the ladder. We’ve had to start climbing out. Our economy is growing again. Some time this year we will have created more jobs in 2010 than during the entire eight years of the Bush administration.”
I was surprised Chris Wallace let that go by without a comment.
scullymj on May 28, 2010 at 2:57 PM
Soo much fairness and balance. Come on Ed, it’s ok to say this idiot scrunt is on crack when she claims Bambi will create as many jobs in a year as Bush did in 8 years. You really don’t have to try to rationalize and defend it.
Live a little, buddy.
misterpeasea on May 28, 2010 at 2:57 PM
So as posted above, we are still 8 million jobs behind the peak under Bush?
And at one point Bush had over 45 consecutive months of employment growth? And we have added 3 million to the work force since the first of last year so we should be hitting over 150 million?
Obama was lying (like he does) when he said we would add 95,000 jobs a month.
seven on May 28, 2010 at 2:59 PM
–It isn’t, but it depends on the starting and ending points and how the question is worded. Most of the private job losses during the Obama administration happened in 2009, so, if you’re only looking at 2010, things could be good for Obama. [I can't get into the database to verify any of these figures, so I don't know if Ed's summary is accurate.]
Jimbo3 on May 28, 2010 at 2:59 PM

This is comparing apples and oranges.
Either compare
1) ALL of Obama’s years with ALL of Bush’s
2) first 16 months of Obama and Bush
3) best Obama four months with best Bush four months
or something along those lines.
The first year of Bush was during the collapse of the stock market started under Clinton. If that is included with Bush then the housing collapse that started under the Democrat Congress and Bush is included.

1st Q for the Dems – does this projection include just 2010 or the entire Obama presidency. How do you account for the jobs lost during the 17 months of the Obama admin? Will this projection be used to get Obama to zero to qualify as a jobs added?
Just you watch, we will have some grand government jobs program, domestic peace corps, civilian army or such, that will add 3 million jobs this year.
We should only count private sector, non-Soros funded jobs.
