Video: Chris Christie vs. the teachers union — director’s cut

posted at 8:46 pm on May 27, 2010 by Allahpundit

You’ve already seen the key part, but just keeeeeep watching. It’s worth it. His latest approval rating’s at 44/42, but like Ace says, that ain’t bad for a Republican governor in a blue state during a nasty recession who spends his days railing against spending and unions and insta-vetoing tax hikes on millionaires. While also churning out the dirtiest, most gratifying “common sense porn” on the market, of course.

Who’s winning this ideological war?

Three of five voters, 60 percent, continue to say the state should hold the line on spending even if many programs are reduced, while just a quarter, 23 percent, say the state should raise taxes if necessary and continue to support state programs…

Similarly, 61 percent say it’s a good idea to raise the retirement age for public employees to 65 years of age from 62, while 33 percent disagree, and public employees split again 45 to 51 percent.

By a two-to-one margin, 64 percent to 31 percent, voters say it’s a good idea to ask school teachers not to take a pay increase for the coming year, and public employee households agree, 57 to 36 percent.

He claims that his budgets for the next two years won’t require any new taxes or significant further cuts, so his approval has nowhere to go but up. Exit question: Is it time for a Chris Christie office webcam?

Chris Christie 2012!!!

BJ* on May 27, 2010 at 8:52 PM

Leadership changes Minds. Reagan showed us that.

Wishy Washyness can get you elected to the whitehouse but then you give speeches saying your in charge of a crisis while you do nothing but give speeches.

What elected official has ever had the cajones to be so blunt as to say the Teachers Union has no credibility?

What Christie is doing unprecedented in the political arena. I have no idea if his frank tone will translate to the national stage but god do I hope it does.

sluhser589 on May 27, 2010 at 8:54 PM

Heh. Notice how she doesn’t run back to the mike after he calls out the union for their “stupid statements”. I wish more conservatives would call the left out on their BS. It’s indefensible, so just make them defend it.

She must not be a math teacher, or she’d be able to look at her paycheck and see that she actually makes $3k/year MORE than the $83k/year that she thinks she’s worth, not $14k less like she suggests.

This is according to the union meeting minutes from ’09, and I’m willing to bet she didn’t take a $14k/year pay decrease in the last year.

RachDubya on May 27, 2010 at 8:58 PM

Pardon, that’d actually be a $17k pay decrease to be what she suggested.

Either way, that tone is how the GOP re-enters the northeast. Well respected authority figures, at least around here, tend to be the most blunt, frank individuals. Many a Father O’Conner speaks in the same manner, and I know the only teachers, police officers, store clerks, etc who get respect from EVERYONE around here speak that way.

Hmm. After reading that comment, I think I may have misread your earlier one. If so, I apologize.

The two things that people like about Christie are the fact that he’s honest, and that he’s an actual leader. Politicians are such spineless weasels these days, it’s incredibly refreshing to have an actual leader, willing to both make decisions and hold himself accountable for their outcomes.

“Compensating me for my education”

So that’s the taxpayers responsibility now? If a private company want to compensate someone for their collage education that’s their business but when did public servants get the idea they were going to get compensated for theirs? Unbelievable.

lowandslow on May 27, 2010 at 9:08 PM

As someone who teaches (granted, college, but some of the same applies), I understand teaching for the love of teaching, to an extent. There are days I wonder what on earth I’m doing and why I bother, and there are days when students make it a joy. But there is never a time when I don’t recognize that it is my choice.

Exactly. This is where most conservatives lose their nerve and fail. They never take it to the limit. Take it to the edge and push them over into the abyss of their own idiocy. It’s so simple. These guys are not hard to debate or fight at all. Because they’ve feasted on our “niceness.” They never expect us to fight back — because we never have. Christie is blowing their minds.

Chris Christie gives me the vapors (g rated version).

Monica on May 27, 2010 at 9:17 PM

Both of my parents were teachers and yes they worked for the love of the job. I grew up thinking that every teacher dipped into their pocket to buy extras for use in the class room. In the early 1960′s the school that my mom taught at did not have air conditioning. This was common at the time because school was out during most of the hot months. We lived in New Mexico at the time so she bought a window unit out of her own pocket and I never heard her complain once about having to do so. I grew up thinking that teaching is a great career and it is but I also realized what the pay scale is (both parents had masters plus an additional 12 to 15 hrs of post master work) so they were at the top of the pay scale. Knowing how teachers were paid is why I became a chemical engineer.

rotaryu on May 27, 2010 at 9:19 PM

Republican version of Obama — I’m going to blow myself up to get things done that (I think) are good for the country. While they couldn’t be farther apart on the issues, they do have that in common.

FalseProfit on May 27, 2010 at 9:19 PM

Just as is the case with illegal immigration & Mexicans, this will not end well for teachers and their stupid effing union.

More and more Americans are seeing Unions as a cancer to our society every day. Unions and Progressives are one in the same. Our country will feel the pain brought on by this evil for a decade or longer, but we will not be fooled by Progressives again. Piece by piece, the Progressive grip on this country (Money, Education, Entertainment, Media) will be torn to shreds by the true owners of this country, the people…

If I ever see a Republican suck up to a Union again, I will puke in that persons face. We had better see Republicans doing nothing but investigating and prosecuting Unions thugs for years to come. Nothing, absolutely nothing with Union ties will enter my home again as long as I’m aware of the connection.

DrMagnolias on May 27, 2010 at 9:08 PM

I feel your pain as I made that decision long ago, too. I never planned on getting rich.
However, the one thing that sticks in my mind about union negotiations is that the union(NEA or local version)always had the attitude that they(the local government) always had the money and the tight wad b@st@rds weren’t going to give it up unless the teachers threatened a strike or some other witholding of services. Same senario with any union that negotiates salaries. Every government is finding that they absolutely do not have the money to lavish on “the children” anymore and unions are just going to have to get used to it. I am hoping that the parents of these children start realizing that they are paying these prima dona teachers and not getting their money’s worth. They have higher taxes and stupid children. A high teacher’s salary doesn’t always attract the sharpest crayon in the box.

In a state as broke at CA they went on strike over a 10% pay cut in economy with 12% unemployment? A fine example for the children they are supposed to be educating.

Anyway, people are not paid for their educational level but for their economic worth to their employer considering the supply and demand. If it wasn’t that way who in Hollywood would be making more than $ 12,000 a year?

The only thing that’s sad about this is…he’s going to fix that state, get it back in the black, spur business growth and get their economy functioning…then NJ voters will replace him with another Dem cause times are good.

We’ll take him if that happens, and gladly.

Who wouldn’t like to see Gov. Christie going against Obama in a townhall format, 2012? Who wouldn’t like to see Hissy Chrissy Matthews piss off Governor Christie in an interview? Who wouldn’t like to see Gov. Christie go head-to-head with Rohm Emmanuel? Or Axelrod? Pelosi? Reid? Or HOLDER?
