Bad news: Chris Matthews’s tingle finally ends

posted at 6:48 pm on May 27, 2010 by Allahpundit

I heard about this earlier and dismissed it. But now that I’ve watched and seen the hurt in his eyes when he says “idiotic cerebral meritocracy,” I fear something’s died here that can never be rekindled. We’ve been tracking this romance practically since day one of Hot Air: The early flirtations in 2007 after The One declared his candidacy; the leg palpitations in 2008 when the campaign kicked into gear and love bloomed; the joyful consummation when he took office and began to govern; and now, as it must to all relationships, comes the disillusion. Or maybe the romantic analogy is inapt. Maybe … this would be better.

I’m comforted, at least, to know that he’s backed off his suggestion that Obama nationalize the oil industry. The new suggestion? Strong-arming America’s oil companies into sending their supertankers into the gulf to vacuum up the crude. Is that feasible, though? Hmmmmm.

vacuum up the crude

Yeah, it’s possible. Especially when you have the vacuum potential of Chrissy Matthews mind behind it.

GarandFan on May 27, 2010 at 7:51 PM

Oil tankers aren’t vacuum cleaners. In any case, Obama only cares deeply about a subject, when that subject is him.

Fred 2 on May 27, 2010 at 7:43 PM

My understanding is that the Middle East had one of their rigs blow up in the ocean and they used tankers to clean up the mess. So apparently, it does work. I’m obviously not an expert in this area, but I have read several places about tankers being used in the Middle East.

It doesn’t matter, Obama and his buddies have the money and the power, all they need to maintain the commanding heights, does anyone really think ANYONE in this admin gives a damn what Chris Mathews thinks?

rob verdi on May 27, 2010 at 7:20 PM

I don’t think care what any American thinks (see HCR), on the other hand its been repeatedly noted the fetish Team ‘O’ has of controling “the narrative”, on that level I am sure they are not pleased by the the insubordination of one their star cheerleaders, Chrissy.

Everything is going to be okay. David Plouffe is about to market a whole new mouthwash. It’s called AmBush. Once Chris gargles, and then successfully spits these fresh new minty talking points, it’ll be zip, boom, and bang. The one size fits all ribbed trojan industry line of bull will be back in business.

Can impeachment be far behind? When he goes to the Gulf on Friday will be tour the destruction or just stand behind a clean podium like he did before? Will he get oil on his pants? Will he hang his head in shame for not doing better? Nah, he’ll go back to vacation.

I don’t put much creedance in anything ‘tingle’ says. He may feel lovers remorse now but all it will take is an Obama peck on the cheek to reinstall his ardor toward him.

d1carter on May 27, 2010 at 8:02 PM

Shep was a Lib bashing a Rep POTUS (Bush) for Katrina. Chris is an ultra lib bashing an even more ultra Lib POTUS (Obama).
The distinction is profound and I find it astounding.

The door of offering critizism of Obama has been opened by the Left Wing Media and it will NEVER close. Now that Obama is “fair game” they will start to compete with each other to help destroy his admininistration. I knew this as soon as I heard Carville yesterday.

It’s over! The love affair has ended in record time. A remarkable accomplishment from this whitehouse to have dropped from favor so quickly.

Justified? You betcha it is!

BTW-The word “soon” is useless. However, Obama made at least two mistakes today. HE said, ..”when I say soon,I mean a couple weeks.” He said, “I have been in charge since day one.” (That makes him responsible for everything that happened afterwards for 39 days.

You want crony capitalism — Wait until Mathews finds out that MMS had approved a waiver just 10 days before the rig exploded, for the environmental study regarding just exactly what happened. Did we now accidentally find out how BP got their campaign cash payoffs at the MMS window?

Here is a very interesting video about the MMS testimony Wednesday, the head of MMS resigned this AM after the testimony.

Wills on May 27, 2010 at 9:41 PM

I can’t believe I can say it, but Chris is absolutely right, this is not leadership. This is not taking control of a situation. This president never even seemed to grasp or recognize the enormity of the situation. It’s a grave and horrible event that he should have looked at every way imaginable to get a handle on. Other countries, 13 other countries offered us their help and where are they? Did we decline help? This is incompetence beyond compare. He should be held accountable.

RMR on May 27, 2010 at 11:02 PM

The solution to this is really simple, y’all.

Just take the President out to the Gulf spill site and have him talk to the oil. Have him reason with it and try to get on it’s good side.

If TOTUS is necessary, then bring her along too.

Yeah, even now I can feel the climate cooling, the oceans receding, etc etc ….

ooh. Tingly.

dissent555 on May 27, 2010 at 11:07 PM

I agree, except I think he should apologize to the oil. May I suggest:

“We know we’ve been very hard on you, knocking the petro-chemical industry as the scourge of mankind and all that, so we perfectly understand why you might want to lash out at us. We are not like our pedecessor, who actually profited (God forbid, heaven forfend, may the concept be erased) from your actual sale. Yes we have, speaking historically now, sold you, bought you, processed you, refined you, in an excruciating process involving fire, iron, and harsh chemicals, and now we are paying the price for our insensitivity to your way of being. Our administration promises that we will treat you in a way that is in line with our American values, our American values, in which we will allow you to lie peacefully beneath the crust of the earth. . . hey! What the freak? The oil fell asleep! Hey! Turn of those G-D cameras now. NOW!”

Mojave Mark on May 28, 2010 at 12:02 AM

vacuum up the crude
Yeah, it’s possible

Actually it’s vary “do-able” or was vary “do-able”
Its called oil/water separators, every town and ship has them.

“KISS” in practice, in town’s, water from the streets after a rain is routed into a holding tank like a deep well.

Oil floats on top of water naturally, and sediments sink to the bottom.

In the middle you have large “Sump Pumps” that pump only the water that’s in the middle.

When to turn the pumps on and off is controlled by sonic sensors and/or float switches.

In this case day one we would have needed to corral the spill with booms.

Oil tanker ships have compartments for the oil.

Vacuum up the crude into an empty compartment, Oil separates from water naturally.

Pump the “middle” water without the oil, to another compartment and repeat.

It’s a bit of a cluster flock but it does work and has been done before.

NoLeftTurn on May 27, 2010 at 9:05 PM

Only problem is it is “NOT” outside the box! It is the fricking box!

But Obama didn’t want to go with the KNOWN ways of dealing with a spill!

It’s BP problem, It’s BP responsibility, no drill baby drill, Obama must have thought it wasn’t as bad as it is and he picked playing politics over the country

DSchoen on May 28, 2010 at 12:19 AM

Hey I had ABC radio on today and there was definitely snark in the announcers voice about Obama’s speech today.

It went something like… So and so resigned from the, blank, position today…

President Obama said he hadn’t heard anything about the resignation. Nevertheless, President Obama insisted he was fully informed and in charge of the oil spill.

It was shorter than that, it was a brilliant turn of phrase. Short and snarky. I wish I could remember it.

petunia on May 28, 2010 at 12:52 AM

I was listening to somebody saying that Kostner’s brother’s centrifuges were being held up while bureaucrats decided they could be used.

Gotta wonder about that. Crude oil on the surface of the water is a “wild” resource. Anybody can go get all they want, it seems to me.

BTW, tankers are not the answer. The US has a huge barge fleet along the Gulf, and they are relatively cheap, shallow draft, and you can bring them into ports for processing an oil/water emulsion.

Tanker as giant vacuum cleaner idea very interesting. Between that and Kevin Costner’s gizmos we might be on to something.

Buy Danish on May 27, 2010 at 8:22 PM

The centrifuge gizmos of Kevin Costner seem promising, but a centrifuge is meant to separate two liquids, the trick is in sucking up just the the right balance between oil and water.

If too much much oil being sucked up you will get oil in the water discharge too, which lowers effective efficiency since you would have to re-separate it again.

And too little oil being sucked up wastes time and money.

On the other hand a large tanker could suck up a huge amount of water/oil, and let the oil float to the top and pump out the water below. Seems like it would work better.

Maybe a combination of KC’s centrifuge, and the tanker so the tanker can hold the discharge water that may have a percentage of oil in it.

The GOM is a big place and millions of gallons of oil is not much compared to the trillions of gallons of water there.

On the green energy side: It would take about 2000 1.5 MW wind turbines to put out the power that was lost by just this one oil spill. Those wind turbines would also take up about 70,000 acres of land.

Could Secret Saudi Spill Hold Fix for Gulf Slick?

“No one’s listening,” says Nick Pozzi, who was an engineer with Saudi Aramco in the Middle East when he says an accident there in 1993 generated a spill far larger than anything the United States has ever seen.

According to Pozzi, that mishap, kept under wraps for close to two decades and first reported by Esquire, dumped nearly 800 million gallons of oil into the Persian Gulf, which would make it more than 70 times the size of the Exxon Valdez spill.

But remarkably, by employing a fleet of empty supertankers to suck crude off the water’s surface, Pozzi’s team was not only able to clean up the spill, but also salvage 85 percent of the oil, he says.

“We took [the oil] out of the water so it would save the environment off the Arabian Gulf, and then we put it into tanks until we could figure out how to clean it,” he told AOL News.

AOL News could not independently verify Pozzi’s account, but one former Aramco employee did acknowledge that there was a large spill in the region in the early ’90s, and that Aramco had used tankers to clean up earlier oil slicks.

Pozzi, now retired, spent 17 years of his career in Saudi Arabia, part of it as a manager in Aramco’s technical support and maintenance division.

“It sounds so simple that they turn around and say, ‘That was years ago. We’ve got modern technology now,’ ” Pozzi says. “But their modern technology isn’t working too well.”

Ya, Smart power! Obama!

Stephen Reilly, CEO of Slickbar, a leading oil spill equipment and vessels manufacturer, says that while he’s unfamiliar with supertankers being used in this way, Pozzi’s proposal could well work.

“Any containment area or barge or tanker can be used for reception, and they certainly have the pumping system on board,” Reilly says. “So in terms of using assets like that to pump stuff into tanks, by all means.”

“My guys have worked on a lot of oil spills, and back in the late ’80s and early ’90s we figured out the best way to clean up oil through lessons learned,” he says. “This is what we think they need to do. We know it works.”
