Obama to deploy 1,200 National Guardsmen to the border

posted at 3:35 pm on May 25, 2010 by Allahpundit

Why does the president hate the “undocumented”?

The Obama administration plans to announce Tuesday that it will send as many as 1,200 National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border to improve border security, an Arizona congresswoman said.

Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords also said in a statement released Tuesday that President Barack Obama will request $500 million in funding for border security…

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer’s spokesman said the governor hadn’t been told of the move prior to her office being contacted by The Associated Press and had no immediate comment.

We’ve seen this movie before and it was dismal enough that I’m not real excited about the sequel. As with so many things, it’s a case of The One following Bush’s lead, making a show of border security in hopes of softening opposition to a comprehensive immigration bill in Congress. It almost certainly ain’t happening this year, but half a bil for enforcement at least gives purple-district House Dems a talking point ahead of November.

Like Exurban Jon, I’m amused that Giffords wants people to believe she was the catalyst for this. Surely the credit rightfully belongs to America’s most stalwart border enforcer: Maverick.

President Barack Obama made a rare visit to a Senate Republican lunch Tuesday – and Republicans, including John McCain, took direct aim at the White House on everything from health care to border security.

Inside the lunch meeting, Obama squared off with his old rival McCain over border security, sources said. Lindsey Graham said the exchange was at times “testy,” and sources described Obama’s conversation with McCain as rather direct.

McCain said he told Obama: “We need to secure the borders first. He didn’t agree.”

Well, he agrees enough to deploy a token force down there, albeit one that’s less than half the size requested by McCain and Jon Kyl. Baby steps, maybe?

Via Dave Weigel, here’s a sneak preview of what may well be this weekend’s presidential YouTube message. I just hope The One wears the colonial wig.

…Republicans came away believing Obama wants to do too much, too fast. And Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kansas) said Obama was rather thin-skinned about criticism. “The more he talked the more he got upset,” Roberts said.

“He wants do immigration, climate change – all before we go home – he’s a very ambitious guy,” said Sen. Mike Johanns (R-Neb.). “I think he needs to step back and see where the country is at.”…

MeatHeadinCA on May 25, 2010 at 3:51 PM

all the reports so far from inside the luncheon indicate MAC and others told O he needs to secure the border FIRST and he pushed back and said: no.

ginaswo on May 25, 2010 at 3:52 PM

Sounds like a bunch of horse crap.

I’ve heard of troops being deployed, before, and not having the authority to return fire, or fire upon hostiles. I’ll be willing to be they’ll have similar stupid restrictions. Furthermore, it shouldn’t be up to Obama to send in the National Guard, but the decision of the individual states’ governors.

Building outposts along the border manned by Soldiers and Marines with full combat gear suitable for both day and night fighting is what we need, reinforced by heavily-armed DHS troops (Border Patrol), state police forces, county police and city police. When resources permit, Army and Marine Corps gunships should be on call. They should also be empowered to engage in counter-sniper warfare, too. Anyone caught goes to a holding facility in lieu of jail, where 24/7 judges are on-site for speedy trials. Following conviction for a felony, they should be sent to any prison that will take them for 2 years at hard labor.

Come to think of it, the DC Police “escorted” the SEIU thugs to the BofA lawyer’s house so they could terrorize their teenage son without having to worry about being “challenged” for their illegal efforts. I guess this is Barry’s way of ensuring that none of those horrible Nazi police types in Aridzona accost the poor defenseless “immigrants” and turn them over to ICE so the Feds can ignore the issue. What a joke, he’s so stupid even his show efforts are transparently ineffective.

Webrider on May 25, 2010 at 3:53 PM

This is unfolding right now. McCain and Cornyn put in amendments to the Defense Spending bill this afternoon to add money/people to border.

No doubt, this is a pre-emptive move by The One to send the Natl Guard with orders to train and do no enforcement. It will fool most of the people into thinking Obowme is doing something and bring his numbers back up in the polls.

That POS Menendez from NJ objected to Cornyn’s amendment because “I have not had a chance to read it”. McCain objected to Menendez’s objection and gave a little spiel on the comity of the senate and how we’ll act like that if it is the new normal.

I’m amused that Giffords wants people to believe she was the catalyst for this.

Gabby Giffords is an incompetent fool and a liar in the bargain (IOW, a typical Democrat). This is the same woman who called Tea Partiers here in Tucson a bunch of racists, and falsely claimed that her life had been threatened by TPers.

And if this NG deployment is like the last, it will be a joke. They sent guardsmen down before, then tied their hands behind their backs. This is probably more of the same — a bunch of meaningless BS so that Barry and JNap can keep falsely claiming that our southern border has been “secured” — and now we need to move on to the really important business of granting another massive amnesty (and “locking in the Latino vote for a generation” in the words of Ed Schultz) .

AZCoyote on May 25, 2010 at 3:54 PM

The fact that Governor Brewer was not informed is a violation of the Posse Comitatus Act!

President Bush caught h3!! from the press for delaying sending the National Guard and military rescue vehicles into New Orleans after Katrina, but he had to wait while then-Gov. Blanco of LA dithered for two days to avoid violating Posse Comitatus. Bush’s major mistake then was not getting on TV and saying something like “I am awaiting authorization from Gov. Blanco to mobilize X thousand National Guard from neighboring states for rescue efforts”, which would have placed the blame squarely on Gov. Blanco’s shoulders.

Probably Gov. Brewer won’t mind the National Guard and will give her OK, but she COULD claim that such a decision requires her permission!

Just after 1 PM CST, Sen. Sam Brownback had reported to the media that B. Hussein was NOT in favor of securing the border with Mexico. My understanding from basic elementary history is that the government should “provide for the common defense”. Well, this story is just breaking, and it’s very easy to make the conclusion that once Sen. Brownback’s word hit the media, B. Hussein backed himself into a corner. This must have been the last straw for many across the nation. It took only one hour for B. Hussein to cower and cave. But that’s one hour that should never have passed. Bush didn’t do any better, but to have the Arizona law at the forefront, then say he doesn’t want to secure the border – foot in his mouth.

============

President Bush’s proposal to temporarily boost the National Guard’s contribution to U.S. border security stands as a testament to the Guard’s flexibility but in no way signals a new, long-term Guard mission, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld told Congress on the 17th of May.

Under Bush’s plan,

announced May 15, up to 6,000 National Guard members will provide mobile communications, transportation, logistics, training, and construction support to the U.S. Border Patrol, the secretary said in testimony before the Senate Appropriations Committee’s defense subcommittee.

Obammunism to the rescue.

Ramping up the drug war. Great job. Great use of our deleted resources. Damn it, I’m starting to get sick of these statists. Ron Paul is the only politician I can trust.

It’s perfect – everything that Obama admin folks have said negative about the AZ immigration law can and must now be thrown verbatim back in their faces.

What Mr. Obama – you’re sending National Guard troops to the border to racially profile folks?

But, but Mr. Obama – I thought we weren’t defined by our borders – what are you doing?

Which way will they be facing?

Examine the wording:

as many as 1,200 troops

That could mean as few as 1.
Even the 1200 max would be token gesture indeed given the length of the border.
