Obama hits new low in Rasmussen poll

posted at 10:12 am on May 25, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Barack Obama hasn’t hit George W. Bush lows yet, but then again, neither did Bush until well into his second term — after Katrina.  In the latest Rasmussen tracking poll of likely voters, Obama has begun to sink again, this time falling to a new low in approval at 42%:

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Tuesday shows that 24% of the nation’s voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as president. Forty-four percent (44%) Strongly Disapprove, giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -20 …

Overall, 42% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the president’s performance. That is the lowest level of approval yet measured for this president. Fifty-six percent (56%) now disapprove of his performance.

Forty-four percent (44%) say the president is doing a good or excellent job on national security issues while 39% give him such positive marks on the economy.

At least at the moment, the downward pressure on his numbers doesn’t appear to be coming from his handling of the Gulf spill.  Rasmussen shows an almost even split on approval for that issue, 34/33, although that could change abruptly if the media catches up to the story.  Politico sees the tide beginning to turn against Obama on the issue.  In fact, it’s become so bad that Obama plans on breaking a 309-day streak:

Until this week, the Obama administration had largely managed to deflect responsibility for the Deepwater Horizon disaster onto others — vowing to keep a “boot on the throat” of BP, while slamming lax oversight on the part of federal regulators during the Bush administration.

But now, with crude lapping into the bayou, even Obama’s defenders have turned critical. A White House that prides itself on operational competence and message discipline has been frustrated by an environmental catastrophe it can’t predict, can’t control and can’t out-message — and the strain is showing.

A majority of Americans, by 51 percent to 46 percent, now disapprove of Obama’s handling of the crisis, according to a new CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll. An Associated Press-GfK survey taken less than two weeks ago showed that only one-third of those polled gave Obama low marks for his response.

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs surprised reporters at the daily briefing Monday by announcing the president would answer questions about the spill in person Thursday — the first presidential news conference Obama has given in months.

That sounds as though the Obama White House has become a little desperate to contain the damage.  They have avoided press conferences ever since Obama went off-message in the last one, 307 days ago, and declared that Cambridge, MA police “acted stupidly” without knowing the details of the arrest of Henry “Skip” Gates.  The resulting embarrassment taught Obama’s handlers to keep him on the Teleprompter or in interviews with friendly media, where Obama has remained almost without exception ever since.

The internals for perceptions of Obama are looking very shaky indeed.  Only 39% approve of his performance on the economy; only 44% approve of his overall leadership.  Just 37% approve of his energy policies.  A microscopic 26% trust Obama in an economic crisis, and only 35% believe his ethics to be good or excellent.

Keep an eye on the numbers after Obama’s presser on Thursday.  He may get a bump just for showing up; if he does, expect him to start hitting the campaign trail ASAP.  If he doesn’t, don’t expect to see Obama much at all.

Update: Yid with Lid has some helpful and interesting charts.

Barack Obama hasn’t hit George W. Bush lows yet, but then again, neither did Bush until well into his second term — after Katrina.

Obama will never hit Bush’s lows. Bush fell as low as he did because he alienated hiw own base on immigration, spending, etc. Whereas Obama’s base will never desert him, so his floor is probably around 40%, maybe high 30s.

Hitting the campaign trail might not be the best idea. Certainly people want to see him out there at least pretending to look like he’s trying to handle the oil spill. But appearing in front of hand-picked, fawning crowds is not the best approach.

OBAMANDIAS

I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed.
And on the pedestal these words appear:
“My name is Obamandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!”
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

phreshone on May 25, 2010 at 10:49 AM

I’m glad he is so pathological that on Memorial Day we will not see him laying the wreath at Arlington for the military dead, because he doesn’t wanna.

Marcus on May 25, 2010 at 10:47 AM

He only wants to lay wreaths on soldiers killed during United Nation missions.

His approval will drop like a rock if the MSM ever reports the truth instead of covering for the man who causes legs to tingle.

So I wonder if a reporter will ask Obama if this is the most enthralling oil spill he’s ever seen.

at the rate that he’s going, the only way he’s going to get a leg to tingle anymore is by humping it all by himself.

There are alot in this demographic with entirely too much Debt, because of College and Graduate programs and the irrational cost of it.

jp on May 25, 2010 at 10:48 AM

Something I read a while ago point out that the two things in our country where costs have exploded the most in the past 20 years–health care and higher education–have one thing in common: substantial government intervention. So what does Obama do–enact Ponzicare and take over the student loan industry.

Obama has nothing but wrong answers.

BuckeyeSam on May 25, 2010 at 10:54 AM

Well we all know who he is going to blame Thursday for the oil disaster. They have been trying to do that all along. Saying the previous Government was too cozy with big oil. Trouble with that one is Obama was the biggest single recipient of money from BP. Ya think any one will ask him about that one? Right…..

sandee on May 25, 2010 at 10:54 AM

I’m worried that Obama is going to buy off the 30 and under crowd by forgiving their college debt as some form of financial necessity for that generation. A wonderful solution for debt incurred for absurdly inflated higher education expenses that almost entirely benefits liberals.

BuckeyeSam on May 25, 2010 at 10:47 AM

I don’t think buying them off is that easy. Fool me once…you know the drill. I might be wrong but jobs tend to sober someone up quick.
The college debt has been deferred already to some indefinite future.

nyx on May 25, 2010 at 10:55 AM

I think Obama will remain more popular than George W. Bush.

Maobama will never be more popular than Bush!
Bush had the highest approval ratings ever after 9/11.
And the Precedent has much lower to go and he’s at (-20) after only 18 months in office.

George W. Bush attacked his base and went against them on key issues such as amnesty, causing defections from his hard core support.

I don’t agree with this.
I’m a strong part of his base and I never felt like he attacked me!
How about Obowma, who’s not only attacked his base, but the entirety of the country?!

Obama has a harder hard core of locked in racial support, and he is too partisan to repeat Bush’s “own goal” political tactics.

David Blue on May 25, 2010 at 10:49 AM

A.A.s only make up 14% of the population.
How long can they “carry” him?
Sorry, but I don’t know what you mean by “own goal” political tactics, unless by that you mean Maobama’s “own goal” is to turn America into a Socialist state.

Jenfidel on May 25, 2010 at 10:57 AM

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs surprised reporters at the daily briefing Monday by announcing the president would answer questions about the spill in person Thursday — the first presidential news conference Obama has given in months.

This is definitive proof that the spill is hurting Obama big time. No way would he go anywhere near a press conference if the polling looked good.

This plus Arizona plus the economy, with Sestak coming up on the radar = tanking numbers. Obama will need support from his base to power them back up, so look for the DADT repeal asap. But that, like Obamacare, will be a temporary bump which may get swamped by negatives elsewhere.

Barring a huge boost in employment, the numbers slide is permanent – it’s now merely a question of how far and how fast they will fall.

Missy on May 25, 2010 at 10:58 AM

I think he has a spinning wheel in the oval office that has “state” “DOD” “DHS” “energy” etc. on it. Every morning he spins the wheel and whichever dept comes up, that’s who takes the lead on the big issue that day. After every spin, Rahm puts a gold sticker on his forehead.

ted c on May 25, 2010 at 10:48 AM

I think they at 1st honestly thought it’d be controlled, eventually. And wanted to nurse it as a crisis to implement some dastardly plan of convenience, then the thing got away from them. They lost the narrative and the false perception of competence, now they’re struggling to get back on message and turn some kinda politcal gain out of it.

Everything is the “game” with these idiots, they honestly felt that governing was easy, as long as the knuckle dragging paleocons were gone and then the chosen intelligencia would effortlessly make everything better.

This is what happens when delusional ivory tower eggheads meet that brick wall called reality.

well, if all dissent was gone, it would be easy. All they’d have to do is crack a few heads every now and then, zap a few testicles here and there and keep everybody in abject fear and poverty and —voila’—this governing thing shore is easy. That’s the trouble with them—they’re little tyrannical dictator wannabes at heart that they are suppressing their urge to crush skulls (unless they’re babies) simply because there are a few inconvenient laws around to keep them from doing so. Hell, even Woody Allen is openly wishing that doofus would just turn on his dictator mojo for a few years to “get things done”…. I have a feeling that folks like us….”would get done” if you know what I mean.

The Drudge Report did not have a link. But this story was so disturbing that I went scooping for more info on the internet.

President Barack Obama and family are heading home for the Memorial Day holiday, and though the schedule is still sketchy, he’s confirmed to attend ceremonies at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in far south suburban Elwood…Lincoln National is located off of 1-55 and Arsenal Road, about 50 miles southwest of Chicago.

If the MSM were half as partisian as they were against Bush, Obama would be destroyed

If the MSM were fair and balanced, the Democrats would either still be the party of JFK and Scoop Jackson, or they’d never get elected to any office outside of City Councils for Greenwich Village and Berkeley.
