Video: Professor booed at Arizona graduation for criticizing immigration law
posted at 4:45 pm on May 24, 2010 by Allahpundit
Via Gateway Pundit, palate-cleansing fun for the whole family. She specializes in identity studies, naturally enough (gender studies, chicano studies, queer theory, etc.), and so naturally enough, an address to students had to turn into a political harangue. Oh, and naturally enough, she mischaracterized the law:
“The new Arizona law generally known as SB 1070 is considered the strictest anti-immigrant legislation in the country and is explicitly intended to drive undocumented immigrants out of the state. One reason it has instigated a boycott is because to a whole lot of people, myself included, it appears to not only invite but require the police to engage in racial profiling.”
Actually, the statute requires cops not to engage in racial profiling, and I’m not sure why she thinks it’s any more draconian than, say, federal law or various local ordinances that look just like it, but identity studies is all about “narratives,” right? Well, she’s got her narrative and she’s not letting go. And why should she? The demagoguery is paying big dividends for Democrats in Colorado and Arizona so far, with Latino support surging for Michael Bennet and Rodney Glassman. More amnesty bracelets, Pelosi, stat!

Professional Liar, with tenure?
Regurgitating the usual fatuous litany of earnest, but vacuous vehemences. Social justice, ho!
What her criticial thinking skills have failed to encounter is:

Beyotch doesn’t know her target audience very well, does she? Clueless among your students-terrific.

Sit Down Shut Up!
Perfect response!!!
This is THE BEST WAY to show these wretched law breaking enablers how America genuinely see’s them. There is no “civil discourse” with “educators” like this. She and others like her make the conscious decision and choice to be this way and to pollute these places of knowledge.

What a creep. The Arizona legislation should cut all funds to that place until that crap weasel is gone.

I also graduated from the University of Arizona that day but was not in the crowd. I graduated from the Eller College of Management and our graduation was a few hours before, though I had friends in the audience. We were all pretty excited to be graduating and I imagine many of those who booed the speaker were upset their graduation was being turned into a platform for a political activist.
My speaker was the dean of our college who briefly criticized both Republicans and Democrats for their handling of the economic crisis but avoided any specifics and never mentioned immigration. I think he was an advisor under Reagan but is more of a moderate, especially on environmental issues.
The speaker at the university-wide graduation the next morning was Bob Woodruff from ABC who did a good job.

I have a question, hopefully someone here can clarify this for me:
Much of the argument has focused on whether States (or Municipalities, by extension) can write laws that “overrule” Federal law -at least that’s my simplistic way of describing it. If that’s the case, how does Federal law address Sanctuary Cities? Or marijuana sales? Don’t these State and Local laws “overrule” or “ignore” established Federal law?
BKeyser on May 24, 2010 at 7:17 PM
Rondy Glassman! What a JOKE! He was standing in my kitchen trying to get me to convert to the Democratic party when he was running for city councel here in Tucson. The guy was somehow elected, then never showed up for work. Was too busy getting his law degree as a JAG. PLEASE don’t let him unseat…even McCain!

The booing is nice, because it represents the overwhelming support that Americans have for the Arizona legislation. But sadly, it’s not enough. We’ve reached a crossroads in this country where our leaders and the radical groups that benefit from this leadership are openly ignoring the established laws, disregarding oaths of office, and blatantly opposing the will of taxPAYers.
So booing is no longer enough. We must act to have professors like this removed. We must keep continuous pressure on the administration of this university until they comply.
The same applies with our leaders and the media that propagandizes for them. They have to be pressured constantly, without rest, until the truth prevails.
It’s really gotten to the point where inaction will result in great damage to our country, and an IRREVERSIBLE downgrade to your way of life. Let these people have ANY SAY in how we live, and you’ll give up your prosperity, a future for your family, and any idea of fairness and equity.
Americans must act now, and continue acting until these kinds of “professors” are ridiculed and disenfranchised. Until the very mention of ridiculousness such as amnesty results in the ending of careers, and fairness and good sense are restored to our nation.

And that is the fight I am waiting for! When California legalizes Marijuana then the Feds have to step in. I think The One is probably personally ok with legalizing it but he won`t be ok with a State stepping on his toes. He will become unhinged, just look at AZ for the example. The Feds have been battling back and forth with California already. On sancyuary cities, they just won`t help out the feds when they arrest someone, they don`t ask about status. That is changing in many areas though and they are cooperating with ICE now.
bluemarlin on May 24, 2010 at 7:37 PM
What is so funny?
bluemarlin on May 24, 2010 at 7:38 PM
What the heck kind of graduation address was that?!
There are many useless academics out there, but none so useless as those in “identity” studies. In fact, they should abolish every department that ends in the word “studies” in every public university and use the money for something worthwhile.
And, btw, she got both laws wrong.
SukieTawdry on May 24, 2010 at 7:45 PM
It’s interesting that this oh-so-caring professor would tell graduating students to call on their critical thinking skill, since this is a skill that’s no longer taught in school.

What a crone. Makes me glad I didn’t go to college.

FIFY
People, stop saying “non-citizens” when referring to illegal immigrants. YOu can be a legal immigrant and still be a non-citizen. Whenever you talk about “non-citizens” you just play into the libs “see, they hate immigrants. They are racist!!”

Nope. There are plenty of behaviors that can give rise to a reasonable suspicion that a person is in the country illegally. I’ll give you an example of a situation that happens quite frequently here in southern AZ: a van commits a traffic infraction (e.g., running a stop sign or red light, speeding, driving erratically, etc.), and a cop turns on his lights and attempts to pull the van over. The driver refuses to stop, and tries to outrun the cop car. The van runs up over a curb, or stalls, or drives off the road and into a desert area, etc., and 20 or 30 people jump out of the back and run.
Now the cop, up to this point, has probably not been close enough to the vehicle to determine the race of the driver, and he/she has not even seen the faces of the people in the back. The cop rounds up as many of the people as he/she can, and while doing so, discovers that none of them speak or understand English. Based on their behavior, the cop will undoubtedly suspect (and reasonably so) that they are illegal aliens. And BTW, these people may or may not be hispanic. There are all sorts of people paying coyotes to bring them across our southern border, because they know it is the easiest way to enter the U.S. illegally.

if obama gave the same speech to the same crowd the reaction would have been even more vehement.
as soon as leftists appear in front of a crowd truly reflective of the electorate at large they get BOOED.
this is why they control the crowds which appear in front of obama.
and it’s why so many congressmen running for reelection don’t want him in their districts.
this november is gonna be something this country has never ever seen before: a tsunami!
reliapundit on May 24, 2010 at 8:40 PM
Civil discourse? What discourse?
The audience has the right to boo when someone is attacking them.
They can’t get up and offer a counter point.
By claiming the bill requires racial profiling the Dean should have asked HER to be civil in her speech.

The purpose behind public schools back in the 19th Century was to teach children of immigrants about American culture so they can better assimilate. Ethnic studies in public schools negates that and simply balkanizes the nation. If you want to learn about your home cultue, nobody is stopping you from doing it on your own time.

She goes on and on about her beautiful human chain of protest with Middle School (11-14 yr olds) & High School (14-18 yr olds) students; basically people who know very little about politics, impressionable, and mostly non-voters to a room full of adult voters that cannot stand what she is saying. If you don’t get the indoctrination that these “elitist educators” are attempting to place on your children with this video, you’ll never get it.

Nothing says progress in society like affirmative action degrees, for those too stupid to get degrees in anything constructive.

Exactly. Right now public opinion doesn’t translate to legislation, and legislation doesn’t translate to enforcement of anything.
We’re on our own. If we don’t take action to force government, media, and law enforcement to hear us, they will do whatever they darn well please. That’s where America is at right now. Lawless.

I am sure she was very popular as a professor…
Nothing is more liberating than sitting there with a diploma, knowing you have already exceeded the very professors who “taught” you and are going to eat their lunch in the private world.
