McClintock to Calderon: Butt out

posted at 2:20 pm on May 21, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Rep. Tom McClintock (R-CA) doesn’t quite tell Mexican President Felipe Calderon to “butt out,” but his somewhat more diplomatic message carries the same meaning.  McClintock rebutted Calderon’s criticism of the Arizona immigration-enforcement law yesterday afternoon in this five-minute speech from the House floor.  He quotes Teddy Roosevelt extensively on the need for both controlled immigration and assimilation, and the American tradition of welcoming those who want to become Americans to this nation.  In order to make sure we have room for all those desiring to assimilate, we need to enforce our laws and strengthen our border security to ensure that we control that flow of people into the US:

Note that McClintock highlights Mexico’s own onerous immigration laws and border enforcement, which by any measure are far more draconian than anything seen in the US.  Perhaps Calderon will invite McClintock to address Mexico’s parliament and discuss their treatment of border jumpers and immigration seekers.  Until he does, though, Calderon would do better to mind his own business — and Democrats who cheered him should be pressed to explain their tolerance enthusiasm for hypocrites who come to our House to inaccurately and unfairly criticize the enforcement of our laws.

Update: McClintock’s site has the full transcription, but here are a couple of the best parts:

Unlike Mexico’s immigration law — which is brutally exclusionary — the purpose of America’s law is not to keep people out.   It is to assure that as people come to the United States, they do so with the intention of becoming Americans and of raising their children as Americans.

Unlike Mexico, our nation embraces immigration and what makes that possible is assimilation.

A century ago President Teddy Roosevelt put it this way.  He said:

“In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person’s becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American…There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn’t an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag… We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language … and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.”

That is how we have built one great nation from the people of all the nations of the world. …

Arizona has not adopted a new immigration law.  All it has done is to enforce existing law that President Obama refuses to enforce.  It is hardly a radical policy to suggest that if an officer on a routine traffic stop encounters a driver with no driver’s license, no passport, and who doesn’t speak English, that maybe that individual might be here illegally.

And to those who say we must reform our immigration laws – I reply that we don’t need to reform them – we need to enforce them.  Just as every other government does.  Just as Mexico does.

Above all, this is a debate of, by and for the American people.  If President Calderon wishes to participate in that debate, I invite him to obey our immigration laws, apply for citizenship, do what 600,000 LEGAL immigrants to our nation are doing right now, learn our history and our customs, and become an American.  And then he will have every right to participate in that debate.

Until then, I would politely invite him to have the courtesy while a guest of this Congress to abide by the fundamental rules of diplomacy between civilized nations not to meddle in each other’s domestic debates.

Only partly OT, I saw on Fox over lunch that theDOJ has instructed ICE to either not accept, or to turn loose any illegals detained by local or state law enforcement in Arizona. So AZ can round up all they want, they just can’t get rid of them

If anyone had any question about the character of the clowns in charge of this circus, all doubt should be removed.

I suppose AZ could just go Arpaio, and set up fence barricades and tents, and feed ‘em bologna sandwiches until the feds pick them up. Or better yet, put them all on busses to San Fracisco.

Mexican “leaders” get a free pass for being corrupt morons who have looted and repressed that country from its very inception.

Mexicans are risking their lives to get out of that hell hole, precisely because of Calderon and his predecessors.

Yet Barry thinks that he, Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro all can teach us something.

I wouldn’t mind Tom running for the US Senate later, or perhaps take another crack at Governor. He has such a strong knowledge of history, and and firm understanding of his beliefs. He can speak extemporaneously on so many topics, at length. A good Californian, and a great Conservative.

TXMomof3 on May 21, 2010 at 2:47 PM

McClintock’s comments are a good start; but they show how far conservatism has to go. We can’t be content to point out our umbrage at the stupidity of leftists and visiting dignitaries whose hypocrisy is evident to anyone with a brain. We have to take the next step and show–point by point–from Calderon’s speech why he is mistaken. We have to take the fight to the liberals and show why and where and how their ideology is bankrupt and without intellectual merit. Until we do, Murtha’s seat is as safe as Peolosi’s.

Exactly! And since the majority of Americans side with Arizona, Obama and Democrats called on Calderon to do their dirty bidding on the floor of our U.S. Capitol. I predict a huge backlash in November against democrats who stood and cheered for illegals to take our jobs, and who are draining money from state, local, and federal levels.

Oh, and, just a few months ago, the State Dept as well as colleges, issued a travel warning for Mexico due to the violence. Today we have the director of ICE (Morton)saying he won’t prosicute illegals from AZ. He should be fired asap for failing to do his job. FIRE Morton!

But THAT ain’t gonna happen while we still have an disgustingly large percentage of people in this country who claim to like him personally.

Uhm. Could I ask WHY? The man is a clusterf*&^ of Biblical proportions, his wife is as pathetic as he is and the government he’s created is a joke. Look, as bad as some folks felt Bush was, at least he never stood there and had a RAT run in front of the podium while he spoke. The crap about 80% or 90% of Mexico’s crime guns coming from the U.S. is a lie. The truth is that less than 20% of their guns come from the U.S. Over 80% come from Russia, the Middle East, South America, and from Mexican military deserters who sell their weapons to drug cartels.

They keep perpetuating this lie by saying that “80% of the traceable guns found at Mexican crime scenes are traced back to the U.S.” What they don’t explain is that the vast majority of the guns recovered at Mexican crime scenes can’t be traced, because they are from foreign manufacturers and don’t have serial numbers (as required of all U.S.-manufactured guns).

The U.S. media dutifully repeat the lie told by the Mexicans, without providing any information about the true numbers or explaining the “traceable” distortion, because they have an anti-gun agenda.

Fox News ran an article last year explaining the gun numbers distortion, but most of the Lib media just repeated the Mexican government’s lie. The U.S. liberal media (and the Mexican government) use the lie to justify Mexico’s enormous numbers of illegal aliens in the U.S. The argument is that we’re in no position to deny refuge in the U.S. to all the Mexicans who come here illegally, since we’re the ones supplying most of the guns to the murderous Mexican drug cartels who make Mexico too dangerous for peaceful, law-abiding Mexicans. Except that most of the Mexican crime guns are not from the U.S. — but that fact is inconvenient and defeats their argument, so they lie about it.

And of course, the lib media in the U.S. also love the Mexicans’ lie because they want to reduce or eliminate private gun ownership in the U.S. For them, the lie is great because it advances two of their favorite agenda items: no enforcement of U.S. immigration laws, and enacting new gun control laws.

Couldn’t have said it better myself even if I had spent a day or two trying to choose the best words to get across the points that Rep. McClintock articulated so effectively. This was truly a brilliant speech.

McClintock’s words functioned as a sanitizing agent purifying the halls of Congress after it had been defiled and stunk up by Calderone and his blatant hypocrisy and breach of diplomacy – not to mention the moronic and nauseating standing ovation by the Marxists.

Why on God’s green earth is McClintock the only GOP politician to have defended America in this manner? Where are all the other so-called GOP leaders? More need to stand up and speak with one unified voice on this. The time to fight is NOW – the hell with trying to appease a block of potential voters who won’t ever vote the right way, anyway. Let’s see courage, not cowardice, in action.

FANTASTIC!!!! If only more repub’s had some balls. We’re in knife fight & we’re worried about cutting someone’s clothes. Until we push back with moments like, repeated all over, it isn’t going to get any better.

McClintock spanked Calderon, Hussein, and Hussein’s Posse of Clowns.

Let me remind everyone that McClintock endorses Poizner & DeVore in CA.

He used my Teddy quotes from the Cinco de Mayo American flag shirts posts! Yeah!
