Good news: Top Democrats wearing bracelets protesting Arizona law now

posted at 7:01 pm on May 21, 2010 by Allahpundit

Someone on Twitter told me you can see Pelosi wearing one here. Problem one: There’s not nearly enough detail to tell for sure. Problem two: Er, since when do Arizona protest bracelets exist? I hadn’t heard a word about them, and surely top Democrats wouldn’t be so stupid as to adorn themselves with actual badges of how out of touch they are with popular opinion about immigration.

But guess what.

As part of his general boycott of Arizona — which includes his refusal to fly through Phoenix on his weekly trips to and from Washington — Baca, D-Rialto, is distributing wristbands inspired by the Lance Armstrong LiveSTRONG craze.

Baca put in an order for 2,500 of his version, which will be red, yellow and blue — the colors of Arizona’s flag — to be worn as a show of solidarity against the controversial law…

In Washington, Baca has gotten House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and most members of the Democratic leadership to wear them, as they did — along with golfing legend Chi Chi Rodriguez — at a recent fundraiser for Baca. Baca said his office is fielding calls from people inquiring how they can get one of the wristbands.

“Everyone wants them,” Baca said. “They’re going like hot potatoes.”

Follow the link for a pic of Steny Hoyer showing his off while grinning like an imbecile; here’s what the bracelets look like up close. I think the fact that the Baca thought of cancer awareness while contemplating the law is super-keen, and am curious to know whether Madam Speaker did indeed compound yesterday’s insult of applauding Calderon’s criticism by donning her official “I refuse to do my job to secure the border” bracelet. Think any reporters will ask?

Via Ace, here’s the newest spot from Jan Brewer’s “Secure the Border” site. I wonder whether this or Joe Baca’s amnesty jewelry will resonate more with voters.

How to destroy a political party:

1. Promise that an economic stimulus is a surefire winner and ram it through without bipartisan support.

2. Have no foreign policy that views America as a good thing.

3. Spend a year talking about a healthcare bill that is opposed by a large majority of the electorate, then pass it by three votes in the House after passing it in the Senate by buying off senators.

4. Say an immigration bill is “racist” and “promotes racial profiling” without reading a bill that explicitly takes measures to prevent that, then stand side by side a foreign president who is causing the illegal immigration problem, then wear wristbands to ensure that the entire country, 67% of whom supports the bill, knows where you stand.

The Dems are looking more and more like the Whigs during the years of Zach Taylor every day.

The term is “hotcakes.”

Ronnie on May 21, 2010 at 8:44 PM

Reminds me of something that shows how times have changed.

My father came from Spain in the 1950′s and lived in Idaho. Him and his friend knew no English and didn’t know how to say “eggs.” So for the first month they only ate pancakes for breakfast because the only thing they knew how to order was “hotcakes” until they learned “eggs.”

They learned English quickly, as did my uncles. (actually my cousins who live in Spain are taught to speak English.) They prospered here and my father always says “this is the greatest country in the world. Not even kings used to live like we live here.”

I’m sure this story resonates with many people here who have parents and grandparents from all over the world, who waited to come here legally and struggled and love this country and taught their children to respect and love it.

Actually the more I think of it the more tasteless this bracelet thing is. People started wearing bracelets as a sign of solidarity with people who were dying of illnesses or soldiers in war.

This belittles those people’s real suffering.

ericire12 on May 21, 2010 at 11:03 PM

I keep reading here and there and hearing on the radio…about the possibility of a Civil War.
A man has written a book on the subject…no dummy he and not a man given to alarmist tendencies.
He does not full on predict it, but points out the indicators past and present. Also the things to look for in the future.

Am I off the beam here? Did I hit the loony trail and didn’t notice?…or is this possible? Looking at trends it’s hard to ignore the evidence of my eyes…
I’m not to the point where I’m believing it but I do see the possibility. The fact that Obama has 80,000 troops specializing in urban combat standing by does nothing to set my mind at ease.
I’m reminded of the old, “just because you’re paranoid” thing… Sigh…

Who needs borders? Who cares about outdated concepts like national sovereignty and the rule of law? We have enough room and money for all the Third World’s poor and criminal classes. Doesn’t matter that we’re trillions of dollars in debt — we can always print more!

Everyone knows this phrase is a code word, or something.

reaganaut on May 22, 2010 at 1:14 PM

Napolitano says the Federal government might not process any illegals that Arizona reports.

That is the same as saying…No state is going to force us to enforce the federal laws on boarder security and immigration, and if they try, we might or will, ignore their efforts.

That includes taking time to read the states new law. I would guess they think as long as they do not read it they are not responsible for what it says or enforcing the federal laws it is based on.

Elisa on May 21, 2010 at 10:41 PM

Yeah, that might make the kids wearing them look different Looking different leads to profiling. Then the school laws will have to be enforced and the profiled students deported home.

Just a question. Canadians look like American citizens. If one entered the country illegally, would they be allowed to stay or would they be deported as soon as they were caught? The presumalbe answer would be deported as soon as tehy were caught. The reason is that they are not useful in keeping socialist democrates in office. On the other hand, illegals who gain the right to vote will insure the democrates a reliable block of voters. It just so happens they make the difference between socialist hanging onto the power they gained or loseing it. There is no benifit to the current socialist based government enforcing the laws on immigration in requards to mexican illegals, and every thing to gain from not doing so and pushing for ammesty.

As for the wrist bands; it just shows how drunk the socialist are on finally gaining power to push their agenda after decades of trying to do it. They are ramming their programs through as fast as they can to insure they keep that power. Health care was the door they needed to do it and the rest follows. If you want to know what they have planned, look at Obama’s platform that he ran on, or read the Communist Party USA, or both as they are virtually the same. After you read those, read his speech to West Point and you will understand why they were less than eager to applaude after he was done. The interesting point is that he expected them to be enthusiatic.

If someone really wanted to make a statement regarding Arizona’s immigration law that would drive home the point to liberals across the country, all they need to do is have a video fading from illegals crossing the border, clothes strewn about the desert looking like a war zone, still shots of murder scenes, gruesome morgue photos, etc. Use the imagery that means the most to them.
