Chris Christie vetoes legislative tax hike — in two minutes; Update: Video added

posted at 9:48 pm on May 21, 2010 by Allahpundit

Question: How much of stuff like this is just Christie being Christie and how much of it is Christie knowing exactly, and I mean exactly, which buttons to push to get grassroots conservatives excited? Between insta-vetoing tax increases and tearing apart reporters, this guy seems to have a preternatural knack for gestures that will appeal to the righty base. Pretty soon he’ll be riding a horse and carrying a Winchester. He’s on the precipice of bona fide folk hero status.

It took about two minutes from the time Senate President Steve Sweeney certified the passage of the millionaires tax package for Gov. Chris Christie to veto the bills at his desk…

“What took you so long ?” asked Christie spokesman Michael Drewniak.

Christie sat at a wooden desk emblazoned with the seal of the state of New Jersey and swiftly signed vetoes.

“We’ll be back, governor,” said Sweeney.

“Alright, we’ll see,” said Christie.

The tax was a small hike on people who make in excess of $1 million annually. Initially the Democrats wanted the income threshold to be $400,000, but when Christie promised to veto that, they raised the threshold and dared him to block a tax on the really rich. Christie’s response:

“Let me be real clear on it,” he said. “They can call it whatever they want to call it. They can package it however they want to package it. They can send it to me with a bow on it. They can send it to me in a nice box, gift-wrapped. They can throw it over the transom and leave it there and hope nobody smells it. No matter how they send it to me, it is going back. It is going back with a veto on it. We are not raising taxes in the state of New Jersey this year.”

The Journal, playing off his state roots, says he was “Born to Veto.” WaPo lists him as currently the seventh-most influential Republican in the country, which, given how little he’s engaged thus far on national issues, is a testament to how he’s taken off among the base. Even Democratic stalwart Ed Rendell says he admires him. My only knock on him: His new-media operation stinks. There should have been a staffer standing by with a Flip video camera to capture Christie accepting the tax-hike bill and instantly cashiering it. I guarantee you that it would have gone viral, much as his dressing down of that reporter did. Get with the program, big man.

Update: Ah, turns out video does exist after all. Thanks to Steve Gutowski for pointing me to it.

I like the idea that Christie isn’t backing down. Arnold talked big, when he took over as governor, but the Democrats still rolled over him.

The policies are good and should work. When they do, Democrats are going to look pretty bad.

Well he’s a New England Republican but …

So far I like this guy …

A lot actually.

Well, he is doing what it’s going to take to save this nation. He doesn’t care how it looks when he doesn’t approve tax increases – he’s sticking to his guns and demanding reductions in government instead. Not a lot of Republicans have these kinds of balls – but this guy does. He also has a charismatic personality that allows him to get away with it.

You’d never see a guy like Mitch McConnel doing this. He doesn’t have the right stuff.

This guy’s got it.

Spending more money than you can possibly bring in got California into trouble. Not being able to say no to special interests, pet projects, and cut spending has ruined California. You need to grow up and read what John the Libertarian wrote to you as well. The man ran on cutting taxes and as he said, "this is who I am!"

No, CA got into trouble by raising taxes — which chased taxables out of the state and sunk their revenues. The problem is spending, and it is not cured by taxing.

Christie will raise taxes after all the FAT in NJ government is cut.

Well – he will raise them then, and only then – if it’s still needed.

But it won’t be. There is enough fat in NJ Government to sustain a Burger King francise for a century.

118 different taxes have been raised in the last 8 years in NJ. Property taxes are up 70% over a 10 year period.

As Christie asks the Legislature “When is enough, ENOUGH?”

Obviously there are still people who need to be paid off so the Democrats can stay in power.

One thing about taxing millionaires. Their mobile. They can move THEIR MONEY to another state. Just ask NYC. According to Christie $76 BILLION has already left the state.

Maybe someone can suggest TAXING TRUST FUNDS. You know, where liberal Democrats hide their cash, so they can hire low cost illegals to mow their lawns, clean their toilets and watch their kids.

As it is, following the trail of pushed aside teacher union members, vetoed bills, and shocked legislators who can’t believe they are having trouble getting higher taxes passed is a real treat and I don’t need a ringside seat. This is, aparently, a man with an executive chainsaw he is firing up. How ever so handy he has a bunch of legislative dead wood around him.

ajacksonian on May 22, 2010 at 9:10 AM

Glad to see my governor is at it again. I expect the Legislature will pass the tax again with a veto-proof majority, but we just need to keep plugging away. I have several small business owners as clients that will be looking for additional ways to reduce their taxable income thanks to these fools in the state senate. Muni-bond sales have skyrocketed over the past 18 months due to the crash and the way these morons responded to it. They’re overvalued, but will continue to sell thanks to fools like we have in NJ. At least we have Christie who will publicly veto these things and give a witty response explaining why he does so.

By the way, if we had nominated Giuliani instead of McCain, we could’ve had this type of person as President. They are both former prosecutors who are called RINOs, but are true deficit hawks. We chose poorly 2 years ago. Let’s choose wisely this November.

No, that isn’t the sort of crap that got CA into trouble.

Out of control spending and *raising* taxes is what got CA into trouble.

Failure to curb spending and seeking even more tax increases got them further into trouble.

Now they’re in a position (and the US federal govt is headed that way) such that no amount of tax increasing could cover the spending, even assuming it wouldn’t destroy what’s left of the economy.

Cutting spending and *lowering* taxes is the way to reduce budget deficits and stimulate the economy.

Isn’t it this sort of cr*p that got California into trouble? If taxes need to be raised, raise them. Quit the grandstanding.

crr6 on May 21, 2010 at 9:53 PM

This is utter BS.

In Nevada several years ago the legislature cried for more taxes but they couldn’t get enough votes(2/3 majority needed)to raise taxes. The governor(a RINO)took it to the Supreme Court who said it was okay to raise the taxes without the votes. Turned out that the ruling wasn’t needed as several Rs changed their votes and the taxes passed.

The next year, the state had so much excess revenue that they gave small rebates to people based on the amount of their auto registration fees. Nothing was ever said about repealing the nearly one billion in new taxes.

The next year, the legislature met and instead of repealing the taxes upped the budget for established programs and created new ones.

Now the bottom has fallen out of the Nevada’s economy and the revenue is falling. Had the idiots in charge repealed the taxes or at the very least banked the excess in a rainy day fund, then maybe we would be in a better position to ride out the storm.

Instead, they did what all bureaucrats do, they found ways to spend anything and everything they could get their hands on.

Increasing taxes does not eliminate the deficit. It only gives the idiots more money to use to protect their seats of power.

Does anyone on here think he will run in 2012 after only serving 2 yrs.? I believe he’s the man for the job.

ohiobabe on May 22, 2010 at 11:57 AM

Well, he did get his action covered… you want video?

DIY and apply for the job. Mind you he might not be hiring, what with the way NJ is going government-wise, so it might have to be a freebie deal. Volunteer if you want it done… don’t complain about others not doing it for you.

QFT. If ever a comment made me wish we could have signature-blocks here, with excellent quotes from other commenters, that one’s it. The last sentence is about the pithiest summation of the difference between “progressive” and conservative strains of thought I’ve ever seen.

May Christie porn go mainstream sooner rather than later.

If he keeps this up, I do believe that the NJ legislators will figure out how to live within its means or otherwise be shown the door come Election Day.

If only we had such machosauce at the Federal level…

itzWicks on May 22, 2010 at 3:40 PM

Christie is a stud!

BUT, I must point out that during the Republican primary he wasn’t considered the “real” conservative.

Please remember this fact when you see a certain someone endorse someone who isn’t the “real” conservative in whatever race.

That is all.

Wouldn’t it be great if Scott Brown was more like Chris Christie….
