Too bad to check: Apple bans app that criticizes the Koran?

posted at 5:34 pm on May 20, 2010 by Allahpundit

Happy “Everybody Draw Mohammed” Day.

iSlam Muhammad apparently depicted images of the prophet Muhammad (forbidden by Islam) and outlined disturbing passages from the Qur’an. It’s surprisingly similar to BibleThumper, a Christian-bashing app that remains in the App Store

What’s disappointing is that this points out Apple’s lack of consistency in approval of apps, as well as their inability to provide recourse to developers who have had apps rejected for seemingly weak reasons.

Yes, the BibleThumper app really does exist, although if there’s an uproar over the double standard here, Apple will likely cave and pull that from the app store too in order to be “evenhanded.” Which is precisely the wrong outcome insofar as it further rewards intimidation by expanding the zone of religious criticism that’s off-limits. That’s a potentially powerful weapon for Islamic zealots, as some believers of other faiths — not all or even most, but some — will take a free ride and applaud businesses for showing greater “respect” for religion by limiting attacks on it. Respect has nothing to do with it, of course; fear is the engine here. But some, in the interests of shielding their preferred belief system, will be happy to pretend.

There’s no way to prove that this audio is what it purports to be, but The Unofficial Apple Weblog appears to be a reputable site and if the clip is bogus, the guy who made it is presumably looking at a heck of a libel suit. Fantastically depressing.

Yep. Ive said from day one the i(insert generic name here) craze will also be Apples downfall. They are running the same business model they did in the 80s and are expecting different results.

As much as I hate to say it, MS is going the same way with WinMo7. Hopefully they can get a happy medium between what Google is doing and what Apple is doing.

Apple’s disapproval might have had more to do with the fact the app appears to be just the equivalent of a web browser loading a file or web page. Apple wants apps that do something besides replicate browser functionality.

kd6rxl on May 20, 2010 at 6:33 PM

Now what would make you think that a company who would send thugs toa journalist’s home to intimidate him would do such a thing?

What would make you think a company that would get a Judge and a Police force to knowingly violate State and Federal Shield Laws to break into a journalist’s home, and confiscate his legal, rightful property in search of a cell phone lost by a drunk at a bar would do such a thing?

What would make you think a company who has blocked a Republican from saying his peace as discussed in the Green Room yesterday, would do such a thing.

No matter how you feel about Apple’s products you should take a closer look at the real culture of the company and what they are willing to do when it comes to basic freedoms.

According to the audio, it regards the Old Testament, so that would be more of a Jew-bashing app than a Christian-bashing app. (In actually, it’s marketed as Christian-bashing, but I’m sure if they ever wanted to go for the European or Middle-Eastern markets, they could change that….)

Already there. Android phones outsold iphones last quarter, 28% to 21%. They basically doubled their numbers over the previous quarter.

I upgraded from an iphone to an Android phone myself, so I guess I’m part of the numbers.

Apple definitely makes a quality product, so I don’t expect them to disappear any time soon. But this mule-headed attempt to completely control the software market for their phones is going to cost them. We’re seeing almost a replay of the way PCs eclipsed the Mac, only this time without creating a new monopoly in Microsoft.
