Video: The most depressing commencement address ever?

posted at 9:25 pm on May 18, 2010 by Allahpundit

I’m posting this for one reason only: If Specter wins, the blow will fall so heavily on some of us that it could prove fatal unless we’re prepared for it first. Consider this preparation. After you watch, you’ll be so bummed that not even an Ingmar Bergman marathon on TCM could make a dent. Why, a Specter victory might even seem cheerful by comparison.

Exit question: Is Gore right?

Blowback

Dude went insane after the 2000 election didn’t he?

Hummer53 on May 18, 2010 at 10:38 PM

‘Insane?’

More like ‘crazy like a fox’. Just think of it as “Pulling a Palin” without the ethics charges: he left a career in pure politics for a much more profitable job in the private sector. And since he’s not in elected office, it’s much harder for any scandal to touch him.

Snow. In May. In the year that is the warmest evah.

The devotees of the Warmenist Church of AL Gore do not see the big picture. They deliberately ignore context.

Long term global cooling is a far greater danger. The last 150 years is just a blip.

Spiny Norman on May 18, 2010 at 11:19 PM

Specter may be gone in seven months, but as of this moment he is probably in the process of “Going Rogue”.

J_Crater on May 18, 2010 at 11:22 PM

Wow,poor kids! My daughter graduated with honors from a small college here in Nebraska last weekend. The commencement speaker was a local 85-year-old man, a decorated WWII vet and philantropist with several advanced degrees and a fascinating life story. When he reminded the grads to appreciate and thank those who inspire them along life’s way, he mentioned that no one had inspired him so much as ‘a man who hung on a cross 2000 years ago..’ nearly the entire gymnasium erupted in applause. (No, it’s not a Christian or religious college) So far, no one has complained, boycotted, sued, or burned the place down. Awesome! :)

Cornhusker on May 18, 2010 at 11:22 PM

I think Al Gore rocks. His ideas are so vast that he confounds his critics. This is the man who invented the internet, who Academy Award winning movie “Love Story” was written based on Al and Tipper, he wrote the Earned Income Tax Credit law (even though it was passed a year before he was in congress, that’s how smart and good he is), and he started the investigation into Love Canal,he was the first to call out Bush stating “A Zebra can’t change his spots”, and he drew inspiration when asked who inspired him, he named President James Knox. “I certainly learned a great deal from 3,000 town hall meetings across my home state of Tennessee over a 16-year period” in Congress, the vice president told NPR’s Bob Edwards (which is 187 per year, or one every other day), that’s how busy and dedicated he is. And he is the one who called the Washington Post to let them know that they printed a picture of the earth from space, upside down. And then he among many quotes stated this as his basis for expertise, which makes him so special; “I’m very familiar with the importance of dairy farming in Wisconsin. I’ve spent the night on a dairy farm here in Wisconsin. If I’m entrusted with the presidency, you’ll have someone who is very familiar with what the Wisconsin dairy industry is all about.”
That’s why I love him, that’s why he is so great, because in one day he can be an expert…now just think after all these years how expert he is in everything.
Leave Al Gore alone…

crr6 on May 19, 2010 at 12:00 AM

Jean-Paul Sartre’s ghost is channeling Al to brighten his presentation.

“Poor graduates. I sure is hot in here isn’t it? My name is Al. Despair is your friend. Make no mistake your future will be bleak on the best of days. Send all you can to: Al Gore’s New Gulfstream Jet and Mansion Fund. Be sure the check can clear before you die. Thank you graduates. Last weekend my stepdaughter received her Masters at Boston U. She’d done her courses from here in Virginia over the past few years but wanted to walk for her diploma.

She’d made her arrangements and later found out that U.S. AG Eric Holder was going to be the speaker. The diploma walk was Saturday night and his speech was Sunday afternoon. She rescheduled her return flight for Sunday morning.

What’s that mean, jerkoff? Like gore receiving a bag of money from the daughter of a chinese general at a fake buddhist monastary? Is it an ethics charge when the democrats are in power and cover it up? How about pushing a fake crisis while helping build an exchange in chicago that will profit from the results? Are those even ethics questions to you, jerkoff? While your answering tell us about the ethics complaints about Palin that turned out to have an iota of merit and that weren’t nuisance complaints but your fellow jerkoff travelors.

CarolinaGirl6 on May 19, 2010 at 8:30 AM

My husband and I, along with 14,000 other people, had to sit through this speech as we waited to hear our children’s name be announced for graduation. My daughter, along with many of the graduates, detested his speech and were quite upset when Gore went on to blame their parents and earlier generations of ruining the earth for them. No one around me clapped, and the applause overall was minimal at best. Dolly Parton who was announced as last year’s speaker received a louder round of applause than anything Gore received. That was very telling of the mood of the audience.

Gore delivered an uninspiring, pitiful speech. He was more interested in promoting his books and movies, than he was the accomplishments of the graduates.

Fortunately for us, my daughter graduated from the Honor’s College and we had a special graduation event the day before, so I was able to block out the commencement speech and replay the speeches I heard the day before and remember the inspiring words spoken then.

The graduates and their parents deserved much better than having Gore as the main speaker.

InquiringMind on May 19, 2010 at 8:30 AM

InquiringMind on May 19, 2010 at 8:30 AM

Although I don’t like Gore and his global warming crap, I was going to write a post about perhaps this was all taken out of context. I say that because I had been to a Commencement Address by Lester Thurow from my college in 1982, and that was when the big threat was the Japanese at that time taking over America, and there were many depressing facts he cited. But it was overall a very inspiring speech, with the thrust being, “go out there and change the world.”

I thought perhaps this may have been what the Gore speech was. However, if you were there, and the speech was a general bummer, then I’ll defer to you.

asc85 on May 19, 2010 at 8:54 AM

Is Gore right? I say, both left, and right. And up the middle. And over the top.

Clearly, the only answer to this hodgepodge of vexations is to: (a) give corpulent Al dominion over your body, your soul; (b) give corpulent Al dominion over your assets.

Perhaps one of Al’s staff will read this thread. If so, please report back to the boss: thanks for the entertainment. He does the bloated, pompous lying sack of excrement act at Oscar levels of performance.

shaken on May 19, 2010 at 8:55 AM

The people of Tennessee have never questioned Gore’s intentions because they are obviously clear. What they do question is his sanity. Remember, if Gore had carried Tennessee, his home state, he would’ve been president and and Florida would’ve been irrelevant. Life as we know it would’ve been forever gone.

The hottest new trend in climate change may be global cooling, some researchers say.

Contrary to the commonly held scientific conclusion that the Earth is getting warmer, Dr. Don Easterbrook, emeritus professor of geology at Western Washington University and author of more than 150 peer-reviewed papers, has unveiled evidence for his prediction that global cooling is coming soon.

“Rather than global warming at a rate of 1 F per decade, records of past natural cycles indicate there may be global cooling for the first few decades of the 21st century to about 2030,” said Easterbrook, speaking on a scientific panel discussion with other climatologists. This, he says, will likely be followed by “global warming from about 2030 to 2060,” which will then be followed by another cooling spell from 2060 to 2090.

Oh, Allah . . .

Why would you even ask? Of course Gore is wrong because this is the weather and climate cycle.

I know you are not a God believer; however, call it God or nature, my Dad taught me an important lesson when I was a kid. We had a creek that bordered our property. Some years the creek ate land on our side. Some years it ate land from the neighbors’s side and left extra for us. It always evens out if you just let nature take her course and be aware that she is going to take her course eventually no matter what humans do to try to offset it.

You can sleep alot easier if you just unshoulder some of the burdens that you really can’t fix and try to enjoy what you have earned or lucked into during your life.
