Uh oh: Media not rallying to Blumenthal’s side after press conference

posted at 8:42 pm on May 18, 2010 by Allahpundit

A bit of candy to chew on while we await Benedict Arlen’s fate. I think Blumenthal went out there today figuring that a confrontational, rather than contrite, posture — let no one impugn my service! — was the fastest way to the lefty base’s hearts. Which, in fairness, is normally a safe bet: The fightin’ nutroots loves a fighter. (Strange, then, that he didn’t emphasize how Linda McMahon’s campaign fed the Times yesterday’s bombshell, huh?) But in this case it’s a miscalculation. So repulsive is stolen valor, and so heavy a political liability is it, that there’s really no incentive for them to support him. There are plenty of qualified Democrats in Connecticut capable of holding Dodd’s seat. Why double down on a guy capable of something as scummy as this? The NYT cringes:

In an unsatisfying news conference on Tuesday, Mr. Blumenthal said he had meant to say that he served “during” the Vietnam War, not “in” Vietnam. He was surrounded by veterans who said he had repeatedly used that construction over the years. But even that phrase seems intended to suggest to inattentive voters that he had a greater link to the war than he actually did.

There is nothing wrong with having received multiple military deferments during the Vietnam period, as Mr. Blumenthal did, and neither those deferments nor the details of his service in the reserve have any bearing on his fitness to become a senator.

But his embellishments do. Mr. Blumenthal, who has an exemplary record as attorney general, has only a few months to demonstrate that they are an aberration and not a disqualifying character trait.

They’re not prepared to throw him under the bus yet. William Saletan, of the reliably lefty Slate, is:

Blumenthal has never given anyone a break. He has made a career out of holding others to the strictest standards of truth—and mercilessly prosecuting them when they fall short…

Last year, Blumenthal denounced “exploitive, poorly managed or even fraudulent fundraisers” who raise money in the name of veterans. He warned the public to donate only “to well-known organizations with a history of helping veterans.”

Today, to dispel the allegations against him, Blumenthal stood in front of veterans at a press conference and boasted: “They’ve heard me again and again and again stand up for justice and fairness to our veterans.”

Follow the link for a long, long list of ways in which Blumenthal has put the screws to defendants who aren’t quite the moral exemplars that he is. It’s like Spitzer redux. Oh — and a detail I forgot to mention in this afternoon’s post: This tool actually had the stones to hold today’s presser at a VFW post, much to the irritation of Connecticut’s VFW commander. Quote: “Blumenthal is not a member of the VFW, and national leaders noted that he wouldn’t meet the eligibility requirement if he tried to join because he didn’t actually serve in a theatre of combat.”

Here’s Chris Matthews laying into him this afternoon on “Hardball” with no disagreement from either of his guests. Like Smerconish says, this guy is done.

This guy really deserves to be toast.

Let’s hope the Connecticut GOP can get their sh!t together and take advantage of this.

A.B. Stoddard just told O’Rielly she thinks the GOP can get 10 Senate seats and flip the Senate.

First pundit outside of Dick Morris I’ve heard say that firmly.

I saw that live. I was amazed matthews was so right on. Further amazed that his “let me finish” special comment thingy at the end was reiterating this.

Matthews still is annoying, and a hack, but he SLOOOOOWLY waking up to the fact that Obama isn’t a god… he even said today to a local (black) Philly campaign guy, “Obama is JUST ANOTHER POLITICIAN!!!” to which the philly guy goes “oh no no no, he’s just learning the ropes” but even chrissy held fast.

This guy should be put on on a raft and towed behind an LCAC in the N. Atlantic and drug across Asia and delivered to Vietnam where he should be promptly kicked in the nuts and told to walk home….to whatever country might take him.

Media not rallying to Blumenthal’s side after press conference

What? Why? He followed the formula.

He did something shameful.
He didn’t admit wrongdoing.
He apologized for his words being misinterpreted.
He found a lame reason to immediately feign indignation. He declared it over.

That is the liberal formula for media forgiveness, isn’t it? So why didn’t it work?

They would be crucifying him 24/7, wait they did on sham evidence. The press is giving Blumenthal a pass somewhat by not screaming this like they did about Bush and they have his words on tape. So he is still getting off easy, so far.

bluemarlin on May 18, 2010 at 9:17 PM

There is nothing wrong with having received multiple military deferments during the Vietnam period, as Mr. Blumenthal did…

I’m pretty sure we were beaten about the face and neck with the fact that Cheney got deferments and never served, and somehow that disqualified *him* in some way, eh?

The truth is, I agree with this comment – but that’s not the point. The point is in the dishonorable lying about his service. C’mon, you’re a legit vet, why are *you* demeaning your own service by lying and embellishing it?

Jesse MacBeth was an individual who gained a level of infamy by doing a 2005 video interview which was posted throughout the world on sites such as YouTube, claiming to have been a member of the United States Army’s Rangers recovering from wounds received in Iraq; dressed in his battle uniform, he claimed that he was made to kill civilians and had participated in war crimes. Subsequent research into the matter proved that not only was MacBeth never in Iraq, he was discharged from the Army after six weeks in boot camp at Fort Benning, Ga., in 2003 because of his “entry level performance and conduct.” MacBeth’s claims and subsequent exposure as a fraud resulted in the phrase “phony soldier” being applied to him as well as those who made similar claims.

If only. All Blumenthal has to do is start promising more rediostribution, welfare and handouts and he’ll walk away with the election. That’s what this state has come to. It’s a sick,anti-business dependency. The only hope we have for Blumenthal’s defeat is for Obama to come and campaign for him.

drjohn on May 18, 2010 at 10:39 PM

Even if you take he misspoke “in” instead of “during” at face value it does not change a thing. He deliberately misled people into thinking he served in combat zone.

There is nothing wrong with serving state side during war but that does not equate that you served in Combat. Serving state side is a honorable but misleading people into thinking you served in a combat theater is despicable.

The Chris Matthews reaction was not phoney. Us 1967 thru 1970 era 20+ year olds all faced the same Draft call-ups, EXCEPT the “swells” who had daddy’s political clout. They only faced a deferment after a deferment with help from liars and fixers on high, and finally they easily joined up in a Reserve or Guard unit that was full and had a 15 year waiting list when we applied a week earlier . It was corrupt as hell and proud of it. But still the offense was not in their beating the system with Daddy’s help. The offense is their straight out lying about it today and expecting a spin controlled pass. Matthews remembers this time and so do all those in that pressure cooker of a war started when JFK and LBJ decided to murder the leader of the South Vietnamese and take over a fight against Ho Chi Minh who had been at war with every foreign invader since 1934 and had no plans to surrender to anyone. We never lost a battle, but we still surrendered to him after first pulling out out our forces . Just watch Obama’s footwork in Afghanistan to see how that is done.

It was just that he just wanted so badly to bask in the glory he knew he had never earned, and in the experiences that he had never had, that he intentionally deceived everyone. And he allowed others to lie about his “record” without correcting them

Consider John Kerry . . . for years he lied about having been sent into Cambodia by President Nixon during Christmas of 1968 . . . which was a little over three weeks before Richard Nixon became the President of the United States!

Talk about “too big of a lie!”

Kerry has lied his entire life. The only thing he has ever done is marry rich widows. With Theresa’s cash, from her deceased husband, they both have a gravy train due to nothing either has accomplished outside of the bedroom. The North Vietnamese have always said that they were on the verge of surrender many times except for the continuous support of the American left. There is no way to know the 1000s of deaths caused by that betrayal.
