To the rescue: Dodd defends Blumenthal’s honor

posted at 1:36 pm on May 18, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

How desperate has Richard Blumenthal become after the exposure of his repeated lies about his military service during the Vietnam era?  The good news is that his campaign has found a fellow Connecticut Democrat to defend his honesty and sense of honor.  The bad news is that it’s Chris Dodd:

“Dick Blumenthal and I have known each other for almost 40 years, and I’ve always known him to be the most honorable of people,” Dodd said, just outside his office. “And nothing I read says anything differently about Dick Blumenthal. He’s going to be a great United States Senator in my view. He’s been a terrific Attorney General. So this is a bump but frankly I think that he’s handled it well and as I said, I’ve known him to be nothing but the most honorable of human beings in public life.”

But what if Republicans have the goods on Blumenthal? What if he can’t adequately contextualize the story, which has onlookers left and right predicting his demise? Even then, Dodd says, Blumenthal should persevere.

“Doesn’t change that at all in my view,” Dodd went on. “Dick Blumenthal, as I said, has been straightforward. He’s been terrific. The people of Connecticut admire him, respect him, as I do, and I’m looking forward to that day in January when he’ll be sworn in as the next Senator from Connecticut.”

Let’s recall exactly why Dodd is issuing endorsements instead of running for re-election to his Senate seat.  Polling before his withdrawal from the Senate race had a solid majority considering Dodd dishonest (54%), with 58% of voters in his state giving him an unfavorable rating.  The event that probably contributed the most to ending Dodd’s electoral career was being exposed as a liar on CNN in March 2009.  That, of course, was after Dodd’s exposure as a “Friends of Angelo” Mozilo recipient of sweetheart loans, from a lender Dodd was supposed to oversee as part of his role on the Senate Banking Committee.

If Dodd had any honor or honesty himself, Blumenthal wouldn’t have been running to replace him in the Senate.  Relying on someone like Chris Dodd to defend one’s integrity is akin to asking Eric Massa to endorse one’s staff-management skills.  If someone wrote this as satire, no one would believe it.

Keep an eye on Blumenthal’s campaign to see whether they move the Dodd statement themselves to the media.  If they do, they’re in the final straits of desperation.

Update: Jim Geraghty hears that other shoes may be about to drop on Blumenthal.

The lies and deceptions of the Obuma administration are so absurdly obvious that they are trickling out of every dimwit with a (D) after his/her name. Liberalism is a mental disorder unfolding before our very eyes. EVERY demonrat is saying they have not read the Arizona law because the lies they are spreading would reflect insanity on their part if they had read it and the lies are the conclusion reached. Can the dims really implode to this degree so rapidly?

Dodd is a liar and a thief whose incompetence has cost the taxpayers millions. His support of Blumenthal can expose the state of Connecticut for what they represent. To elect a confirmed liar to lead is a reflection on the morals of those who elect him.

There is no honor among thieves.

It’s not necessarily just the liberal elite that are voting democratic here in CT. Believe it or not much of CT is very urban-Hartford, Bridgeport, New Haven, New London, Waterbury, New Britain and I’m sure I’m missing a few. Sure we get the NYC progressives up here, quite a few of my neighbors are, but I would bet that the majority of democratic votes come from the cities listed above. Connecticut is one of the least friendly business states in the country. The majority of working, non government, non-union employed people are voting against the democrats this time around. The union, gov.employed non-workers looking for entitlements will.
The question is are there more of us than there are of them.

A good point about the urban vote in CT, most of which is lock-step Democrat, although Waterbury has a long Republican tradition, and New London would probably go for Simmons if he won the nomination.

Most of Eastern CT, and the rural areas of northwest CT vote Republican, but they are not heavily populated.

The main problem in CT is the affluent suburbs in Fairfield County and around Hartford in the central valley. Normally, affluent voters tend to vote Republican, for lower taxes and a more business-friendly economic climate, but central CT seems to be dominated by wealthy voters who vote Democrat to extend government “charity toward the poor”, and there is a strong revulsion to the military, sometimes fueled by priests in a state where the Catholic church is strong.

An attempt to win them over by saying that “Blumenthal got 5 deferments and never served in Vietnam” is likely to be answered by “So what, we shouldn’t have been in Vietnam anyway”, whereas the fact that he LIED about it as Attorney General might make voters wonder about his integrity.

“Dick Blumenthal and I have known each other for almost 40 years. Dick and I used to party with John Kerry in Saigon just before John left for Cambodia.” and I’ve always known him both to be the most honorable of people, Dodd said

Lefties have no shame. If I did this I wouldn’t want to go outside of my house. STOLEN VALOR!! Also, I am absolutely stunned at the ease with which the Pres. can lie, lie, and lie.

From the comments at geraghty

On the Corner, there’s a new story claiming Blumenthal also lied about being captain of the Harvard swim team, when records show he wasn’t on the team at all! Seems like he’s just a compulsive liar. More points for Simmons!

“I’ve always known him to be the most honorable of people”

And that means what exactly?

Does that mean he would not engage in a “waitress sandwich”?

Or that he wouldn’t get drunk, crash his car and leave a staffer to drown in his car?

DSchoen on May 18, 2010 at 4:24 PM

Let me guess -

Dodd and Blumenthal once made a waitress sandwich ?

With his best buddy, the Tedster, gone, maybe Dodd should just slink off somewhere and make of himself an open-faced (waitress) sandwich.

Won’t touch a Fannie or a Freddie in your banking regulation bill, will you, sleaze?

I scanned the posts but didn’t see this blockbuster, so here it is from Jim Hoft’s Gateway Pundit:

Breaking: Blumenthal’s Soldier Supporter On Stage Today Is a Phony, Too
Oh my.
Democratic Senatorial Candidate Richard Blumenthal held a presser today after it was discovered that he lied about serving in Vietnam. (He also lied about being captain of the Harvard Swim Team.) So, Blumenthal went before the press along with some former military men and supporters. It was a great attempt by the democrat to try to redeem himself.

Unfortunately, one of the democratic supporters on stage with him lied about his military service, too.

Free Republic reported–
Blumenthal’s military buddy on stage is William Joseph Trumpower, aka Elliott Stor, a POW HALL OF SHAME
