AZ utility board member responds to LA boycott over SB1070
posted at 2:55 pm on May 18, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
The Los Angeles City Council voted to boycott the state of Arizona over its new immigration-enforcement law, and now the Arizona Corporation Commission has responded. Gary Pierce, one of the commissioners chosen in state-wide elections to the utility regulation panel, notes that Los Angeles gets about 25% of its power from Arizona producers. If the City of Angels really wants a boycott, Pierce offers his services to help, as he explains in a letter to Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and copied to Hot Air:
Dear Mayor Villaraigosa,
I was dismayed to learn that the Los Angeles City Council voted to boycott Arizona and Arizona-based companies — a vote you strongly supported — to show opposition to SB 1070 (Support our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act).
You explained your support of the boycott as follows: “While we recognize that as neighbors, we share resources and ties with the State of Arizona that may be difficult to sever, our goal is not to hurt the local economy of Los Angeles, but to impact the economy of Arizona. Our intent is to use our dollars — or the withholding of our dollars — to send a message.” (emphasis added)
I received your message; please receive mine. As a state-wide elected member of the Arizona Corporation Commission overseeing Arizona’s electric and water utilities, I too am keenly aware of the “resources and ties” we share with the City of Los Angeles. In fact, approximately twenty-five percent of the electricity consumed in Los Angeles is generated by power plants in Arizona.
If an economic boycott is truly what you desire, I will be happy to encourage Arizona utilities to renegotiate your power agreements so Los Angeles no longer receives any power from Arizona-based generation. I am confident that Arizona’s utilities would be happy to take those electrons off your hands. If, however, you find that the City Council lacks the strength of its convictions to turn off the lights in Los Angeles and boycott Arizona power, please reconsider the wisdom of attempting to harm Arizona’s economy.
People of goodwill can disagree over the merits of SB 1070. A state-wide economic boycott of Arizona is not a message sent in goodwill.
Sincerely,
Commissioner Gary Pierce
A scan of the letter can be downloaded here. I wonder what Commissioner Pierce has to say about Councilman Ed Reyes’ lack of understanding of California’s own penal code? Maybe the AZCC could buy a copy for Reyes, although it might be difficult to read during the blackout in Los Angeles.

Gary Pierce, talk is cheap…I really hope that your ready to back them words up with actions. I would dearly love to see AZ pull the damn plug on CA. Hell, I’d love to see all the states that supply CA with power shut them down. Make CA start generating their own damn power.

If you take the time to read CA penal code you will find similar language, the problem is NOBODY in authority in CA wants to enforce it.

As a resident of SoCal I say, good for AZ, maybe when those idiots who allowed the leftards to get elected feel the pain of their inaction they will get off their lazy a$$’s and do something to correct the situation.
I am in San Diego County, not the city itself, I always vote, and I always do my homework on who and what I am voting for. I say, time for my fellow Californian’s to reap what they have sown.

It’s a sure thing they haven’t even read their own laws about illegal immigration. The preexisting California law and the new Arizona law have a lot of similarities.

Just in case you all are getting the idea that Los Angelenos are as stupid and out of touch as our stupid and out of touch city council… The Los Angeles Times did an online poll of what we thought… The results were so humiliating for the Times and the Council that the Times buried the poll results… 94 percent of us support the AZ law. We told the Council to mind it’s own damn business!

Isn’t it unconstitutional for state and local governments to engage in boycotts against other states and local governments?
The very idea that LA would do this is ridiculous anyway. The mayors of LA and San Francisco have refused to cooperate with the feds when it comes to illegal immigration for years and years now. That is one reason California has so many illegals. They know that if they can get past the border they have a place to go where they will be safe.

macncheez on May 18, 2010 at 4:31 PM
Bob, as a fellow Californian, I see your point, but I don’t agree with your conclusion.
Our beloved state is dying of a terminal idiot infestation at all levels of government, from Sacramento on down to all the busybodies in the neighborhood councils. The medicine to purge the idiots will be strong and unpleasant, but we must take it if we are to survive.
The CA legislature has very carefully gerrymandered the state to ensure a safe majority of liberal Democrats in the state government. That’s what neutralized (neutered?) Arnie in his first year as Governator. (Oh, what a disappointment he turned out to be!) You and I and the other bitterly clinging California conservatives have been neutralized as well. We need some external event to shake up the status quo, to crack their armor just enough to get our fingernails in there to pry it loose. This could be that event.
If AZ cuts off our power, there is no doubt that all Californians will suffer. The conservatives, libertarians, and other persons who don’t rely on government will bear the suffering and find ways to carry on, help each other, and even prosper in spite of it. The liberals and their enablers will whine and cry loudly and blame each other. And the scales will start to fall from some of their eyes, just as is now happening with some Obama voters.
We need this. California needs this. The whole state apparatus has been trying to live in a fantasy land. It’s time for a dose of reality.

There must some application for this here:
Some people have the vocabulary to sum up things in a way you can understand them. This quote came from the Czech Republic. Someone over there has it figured out. We have a lot of work to do.
The danger to America is not Barack Obama but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the Presidency. It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president.
The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails America . Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince.
The Republic can survive a Barack Obama, who is, after all, merely a fool. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools such as those who made him their president.

You’re completely missing the point and you’re taking this way too personal. If you personally are doing everything you can then no one, including me is talking about you personally. They’re generalizing about Californians. When the people in Virginia paid attention to the media spin of the word macacca and George Allen lost his bid for Senator by a very slim margin the people of Virginia got slammed on this site and others. Rightfully so because enough of them acted stupidly to hand a majority over to Harry Reid in the Senate. Idiots! Those are people in my state and I’ll be damned if I’d even think of trying to justify their decision. Think about what you are doing. You’re trying to defend voters who routinely put liberal tools into office in your state. It may not seem like that to you but that’s what you are doing. If you disagree with that then please explain how they keep getting elected. Don’t be insulted by people who make disparaging remarks about your elected officials and the tools who keep voting for them. Be insulted by the officials and the tools.

I’m not insulted by any of you. I am a little disturbed by the knee jerk reaction to insult the entire population of an entire state based on a decision made by the LA city council. FYI, the LA city council does not represent California, nor did MOST people in California vote for or against them (or for the San Fransisco city council, for that matter). LA is ONE city in the entire state. I live in NorCal, in a district that NEVER elects liberals to represent us. And finally, polls indicate that anywhere from 83-96 percent of Californians support the AZ law. So your angst against “Californians” is misplaced.

As for Arizona sending water and power to LA, most the water and power in LA is taken from Northern California…the Cascade and Sierra Nevada mountains….through the electrical grid and the California aquaduct. We don’t like it any better than the people in AZ like it. But thank you for wishing an entire state full of fellow Americans would fall into the ocean.

speed911, we know that not every Californian votes for these idiots. As to the comments, they are only a response to the LA boycott. I live in Austin, Texas. It’s an island of blue, surrounded by a sea of red. Our city council decided to issue a boycott, then they found out some of their big purchases came from Arizona. So instead, they decided no more city trips to Arizona. Turns out that affects one trip a year, but everyone in Austin has to listen to the comments about our city being stupid. In my opinion, we deserve it because we let these morons get elected.

I harbor no animus towards the good people of LA but SOMEONE allowed this troglodyte and the reactionary city council to be elected. Arizona should, instead of cutting off the power should add taxes, fees, what have you to the transmission costs to bleed these idiots out of existence. Is this harsh, yes, but sometimes people need a swift kick in the a$$ to wake them up and kick these morons out.
