Bombshell: Democratic Senate candidate lied about serving in Vietnam; Update: Blumenthal responds, sort of

posted at 9:33 pm on May 17, 2010 by Allahpundit

Not just any Democratic Senate candidate, either. It’s Richard Blumenthal, current attorney general of Connecticut, whom Chris Dodd made way for by retiring earlier this year. He’s been leading all Republican challengers by upwards of 20 points in the polls and was considered a mortal lock to win the seat in November. Until now.

Follow the link for the full background of his military history. The five deferments aren’t the problem. This is the problem:

“We have learned something important since the days that I served in Vietnam,” Mr. Blumenthal said to the group gathered in Norwalk in March 2008. “And you exemplify it. Whatever we think about the war, whatever we call it — Afghanistan or Iraq — we owe our military men and women unconditional support.”…

In 2003, he addressed a rally in Bridgeport, where about 100 military families gathered to express support for American troops overseas. “When we returned, we saw nothing like this,” Mr. Blumenthal said. “Let us do better by this generation of men and women.”…

The New Haven Register on July 20, 2006, described him as “a veteran of the Vietnam War,” and on April 6, 2007, said that the attorney general had “served in the Marines in Vietnam.” On May 26, 2009, The Connecticut Post, a Bridgeport newspaper that is the state’s third-largest daily, described Mr. Blumenthal as “a Vietnam veteran.” And The Shelton Weekly reported on May 23, 2008, that Mr. Blumenthal “was met with applause when he spoke about his experience as a Marine sergeant in Vietnam.”…

It does not appear that Mr. Blumenthal ever sought to correct those mistakes…

Mr. Blumenthal has made veterans’ issues a centerpiece of his public life and his Senate campaign, but even those who have worked closely with him have gotten the misimpression that he served in Vietnam. In an interview, Jean Risley, the chairwoman of the Connecticut Vietnam Veterans Memorial Inc., recalled listening to an emotional Mr. Blumenthal offering remarks at the dedication of the memorial. She remembered him describing the indignities that he and other veterans faced when they returned from Vietnam.

After five deferments he landed a spot in a Marine Reserve unit based in Washington, “which virtually guaranteed that he would not be sent to Vietnam.” My first thought was whether he might be in violation of the Stolen Valor Act passed a few years ago, but it looks like that only applies to false claims about medals and decorations, not false claims about service. The money question, then: Will this abject disgrace have the honor to resign and bow out of the race or will the Dems stick with him? His lead’s large enough that there’s at least a chance he can weather the storm if he grovels enough. Or actually … there really isn’t a chance, is there? Any other false credential could be spun, but even in a state as blue as Connecticut, lying about military service is just too irretrievably scummy, I think. Vets will eat him for breakfast. Exit quotation from Army veteran Andy Levy, in a tweet to Blumenthal: “You are an utterly despicable coward who claims the bravery and actions of others as your own. Rot in hell.”

Update: It gets worse for Blumenthal. Meet his likely Republican challenger, Rob Simmons:

Rob’s public service career began when he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1965 as a Private, and spent 19 months in Vietnam where he earned two Bronze Star Medals. Rob continued his military service in the U.S. Army Reserve as a Military Intelligence Officer, retiring as a Colonel in 2003 with over 37 years of active and reserve service.

Update: Credit where credit is due: No doubt it pained the NYT to drop a bomb on one of the few surefire Democratic winners this November, but they dropped it anyway.

Update: Lefty poll guru Nate Silver says Blumenthal must go. It’s really the only sane option. With a state as Democratic as Connecticut, there’s still plenty of time to find a replacement capable of winning the seat. It’s just going to be a closer race than it would otherwise have been, especially now that the military issue will refocus public attention on Simmons’s credentials. Ned Lamont for Senate?

Update: Marc Ambinder quotes Blumenthal’s camp as saying it’s a “hit job” and “full of inaccuracies” with promises of more to come.

Update: Blumenthal’s outrageously outraged — but he doesn’t challenge any of the salient facts. Lights out.

“The New York Times story is an outrageous distortion of Dick Blumenthal’s record of service,” Blumenthal’s campaign manager, Mindy Myers, said in a statement.

“Unlike many of his peers, Dick Blumenthal voluntarily joined the Marine Corps Reserves in 1970 and served for six months in Parris Island, SC and six years in the reserves. He received no special treatment from anyone.”

Previewing a campaign event tomorrow, Myers wrote that “Dick has a long record of standing up for veterans. Tomorrow, veterans will be standing up with Dick.”

Blumenthal will hold a news conference tomorrow. He will be flanked by veterans.

Don’t have time to read all the comments, so maybe someone has mentioned this…

Why would a Democrat claim to be a Vietnam Vet? He would gain more cachet with his supporters if he claimed to be a draft dodger that hid out in Canada for a few years.

ned lamont is aiming for governor this time around. his rallying cry seems to be “i’ll bring home connecticut’s fair share of federal pork!”

in any case, i can see how the left can spin this. it will be about politicians who didn’t serve donning the mantle of veteran status to pander to jingoistic fervor. note i said “politicians”. expect to see a lot of “name that party” shenanigans in the liberal treatment of this. also expect to see his name coughed quietly at the bottom of the second paragraph and never mentioned a second time in model lefty column.

in fact, i’ll give you the text of the first paragraph and headline of what the wapo, huffpo, newsweek, etc. crowd will be writing about this, if at all:

vietnam veteran credentials of senate contender seeking to replace democrat revealed false.

as memorial day approaches, americans will be taking the time to remember those who’ve served, and those who currently serve. almost a decade after 9-11 and more than a year after the close of the bush presidency, the u.s. still has over 100000 troops deployed in iraq and afghanistan. it is only expected that those in office and those seeking office will also use the moment to pay tribute to those who toil and sometimes die in our name.

there is also a campaign season afoot. different sources offer varying prognoses for president obama’s agenda as important democratic seats become up for grabs. one contest in which the president stands to lose an ally is the connecticut senate race, in which five-term democrat stalwart, sen. christopher dodd is voluntarily resigning, citing concerns for his health. in 2009 he discovered he had prostate cancer.

one of the candidate hoping to snatch a victory from dodd’s absence claims to be a vietnam veteran and a staunch advocate for veterans. but it has been revealed that his claims of having served in vietnam fall somewhat short of fact.

…saying, “i remember how we were treated when we returned from vietnam.

…jeremy lembeke is the author of “the spitting image”, in which he argues that, despite the prevalence of tales of vietnam veterans being abused upon their return to civilian life, such tales have rarely been proven to have actually happened, and may be a manifestation of post-traumatic stress disorder…

you get the picture.

it would be different if blumenthal was caught faking veteran status to bark antiwar, antimilitary crap at answer rallies. this they can spin away from him.

eh on May 18, 2010 at 1:18 AM

How did this not come up sooner? The guy has been in public office for over 7 years and just now someone decided to take a closer look at Bloomies vet status? It would only take one guy who was actually in Vietnam to ask where he was stationed and it would be game over.

Bishop on May 17, 2010 at 10:04 PM

How many in politics or the news media have ever worn the uniform ? Damn few .

borntoraisehogs on May 18, 2010 at 1:22 AM

Hmmmm.

1. NYT must have pulled the trigger on this schmuck because the Democrats are terrified that he’d be on the ballot in Nov only for this to crop up in Oct. By pulling the trigger now they have enough time to replace him.

2. sigh. Democrats. My family are Democrats … but the America loving kind who served from love of country, loyalty and respect. My uncles served in the USMC. My father served in the US Army did a couple tours in Vietnam. I served in the USMC myself.

It seems the only way to truly test someone is to put them under the hammer. The weak … break. The rotten … bend. And you can see whether or not the blade is made true … or of base metal suitable only for something else.

Bubba Redneck on May 18, 2010 at 3:57 AM

My father was in Vietnam when I was born. He doesn’t talk about it. Whatever he did, he made Major there, and he took some fire, but was not wounded in a way that affected him for the rest of his life (shot, but recovered) in a disability.

He’s a wonderful, warm, loving Dad and has had a great life, but he will not discuss the war and simply is proud to have served. You cannot get him to talk about what he did in the war, and he would never use his service to promote himself other than as fact on his resume.

Blumenthal isn’t fit to lick my father’s boots.

After watching Dodd, Lieberman, and Blumanthal for many years in Connecticut – I suspect Blumanthal would be the most regretful votes one could make.

Blumanthal is a cold lifetime leftist power-seeker who will make Dodd look like a responsible man. Like all leftists -believe not a word they say – they are professionals at treating truth like the constitution – a weapon to be manipulated. Frankly, I fear him getting power.

Blumenthal is toast. I heard his assistant on TV this AM blabbering all kinds of nonsense about him volunteering and not being drafted, honorable service, etc. As a Dem here in CT, you can get away with tons of bad stuff, but lying about military service is very bad juju. I expect we will be hearing more and more stupid stuff he said now that the dam has broken. Vet organizations all around the state are now likely going back in their records to see what he said at all kinds of events. This is not over by a long shot.

Johnnyreb on May 18, 2010 at 6:49 AM

What a bunch of freaking hypocrites these people are. Someday they will be claiming they served in Iraq.

Terrye on May 18, 2010 at 6:52 AM

OK now I know why the NYT dropped the bomb on him. It appears Linda McMahon and her team was getting ready to drop it themselves, and the NYT tried to pre-empt them. From the New London Day newspaper (who will most likely have some dimwitted he’s a liar but we forgive him because he has served the state as AG and has done good and we still endorse him OP Ed tomorrow):

“It’s very clear to us, over the past few weeks and months as we’ve begun to research Mr. Blumenthal in earnest, there are some deeply troubling discrepancies between the image he’s portrayed publicly and the truth,” said Ed Patru, a spokesman for former wrestling executive Linda McMahon, who is seeking the GOP nomination.”

Look up Limbaugh’s reasons for not going as well as Ted Nugent’s admitted strategy of dodging Viet Nam. Darlings of the right they are but not without baggage.
It is a helluva lot more complicated than simply
Liberal = draft dodging posers and
Conservative = salt of the earth types who always did their duty

Kerry did actually serve. He seems to have embellished some of his accounts of just where he was but undoubtedly was in combat. Blumenthal simply wasn’t there – big difference.
And before someone throws out the “kerry shot himself” claim, provide proof that was the case. Veterans don’t normally question/judge the actions of their brothers/sisters in arms unless compelling proof is provided.

What Kerry did after leaving the service with the winter soldiers was something that I cannot forget/overlook – puts him right alongside Jane Fonda in my disdain column.
But one must separate the two – he did serve and was discharged honorably.

I can’t say I disagree with this approach, but other traitors get it in the neck in far worse ways. Judas sold out Jesus for 30 shekels of silver, bought some land and then promptly suffered a horrendous death upon it. This man has violated the honor of serving his country in wartime, a charge that riles me almost as bad as treason. I think that this level of dishonor, disrespect and dishonesty toward your country should be dealt with in extraordinarily harsh ways. I am sickened by this, I have served my country in Iraq and Afghanistan and this makes me want to wretch, right after I punch this guy.

Not well worded.

“The New York Times story is an outrageous distortion of Dick Blumenthal’s record of service,”

That’s crummy too. His only argument is not that his record was distorted, it’s that he may have been misquoted in statements about his service previously, multiple times about coming home for Vietnam and serving in Vietnam. It’s maybe conceivable that reporters may have made some assumptions or misquoted “served during Vietnam” in place of “served in Vietnam”, but it doesn’t look good for him.

forest on May 18, 2010 at 7:47 AM

Why should Blumenthal step aside? Other dems have not lived in the congressional districts they represented; have carried on illicit affairs; and lived in houses where illegal drug activities were conducted; and have engaged in other corrupt activities like commandeering National Guard units to retrieve, literally, their “cold cash” and they have not promptly stepped down from their elected offices when these activities were revealed. Why start now?

He had to know this was coming out. It explains why I haven’t seen a single ad run by him in the last few weeks here, not a peep on TV, the radio and nothing in print either. I predict he will make a brief statement today where he will not apologize for the MSM “distorting” his record and that will be it. Then it will snowball and he will finally withdraw from the race. Sort of like Dodd when his stuff came out, he drug it out for months.

My dad left college to join the Army in 1968. He spent a year in Vietnam, which he never talks about, and is now receiving disability pay. He is a Vietnam veteran.

My mother was also in the Army, starting in 1969. She worked in the hospital at Ft. Meade, and left the Army after my parents got married and she got pregnant (getting out due to pregnancy was standard back then). She is a veteran, but not a Vietnam veteran.

I cannot come up with terms strong enough to describe how disgusted I am with snakes like Blumenthal.

You miss the point – what did he get deferred for? It is a subject he refuses to discuss. We’ve got vets serving who are missing parts of their bodies. I also note you ignore the Nugent point.
Rush could make a compelling case about what the reality of the times were — no one wanted to go to VN and the rules for deferment were used and abused. Was this because an 18 year old is scared of the unknown or because they are a traitor? That is the point that gets missed.
The swift boat veterans didn’t say he shot himself on purpose. They criticized his post military activities.

Marines do not have their sir names on their uniforms – except those holding a few special positions. The reason is simple, they are a Marine and will always be a Marine therefore no reason for a name. Indicative of integrity.

Also, if addressing a group of Marines of the same rank and you want to address the leader of the group, say Marine and the leader (they know among themselves who the senior member is and that person will acknowledge for the the group). Indicative of trustworthiness.

Finally, ask a Marine or other service member to recount combat engagements you may only get a very limited response such as date of the engagement. The real action is buried deep into their subconscious. Indicative of deep respect.

integrity, trustworthiness, respect are character traits that compose a Marine. Anyone (especially politicians) that tries to leverage these qualities by openly bragging about them is not to be trusted.

Ask they guys on stage to present ID and then ask for a DD 214.
Oh wait we can not ask for ID?
Any blank looks and you know the bunch is from central casting.

Hi, Teresa! I need some more of your famous gin-soaked raisins.

Evidently he also lied about being the Capt. of Harvard’s swim team, too.
And of course he claims he cannot imagine how that got in an article.
And there are people who will believe his lame attempts at evasion.

Badger40 on May 18, 2010 at 9:44 AM

“Misimpression”? He flat out lied about serving in Vietnam, the words coming from his own mouth. He’s toast. I wonder what Jug Burkett’s thoughts are on this?

The NYT outed him early because he’s a Democrat. If he’d been a Republican, this would have come out a few days before the November election, after it was too late to replace him on the ballot. Trust me, they didn’t do this to help the Republicans. Someone would eventually have looked at his records.

30 yrs ago scum like this would be calling nam vets baby killers…

jerrytbg on May 18, 2010 at 9:48 AM

Moral of the story…if you didn’t serve in Vietnam don’t say you did. It’s an insult to our Veteran’s and possibly one of the worst lies a man could tell. It says a lot about his character (or the lack thereof).

Having looked a bit more, he’s a Murtha waiting to hatch.

Update: It gets worse for Blumenthal. Meet his likely Republican challenger, Rob Simmons:

You mean Peter Schiff, of course.

This is the only kind of military the left respects: the fake military, stealing honor to get rich or get elected.

righto. Isn’t it just like the left to pervert something honorable and distinguished in order to attain political power. How perverse and disgusting. Where are our trolls to defend these bright and shining leftists elitists? Shameful.

Well, nice diversion, Bradley.

But none of those folks claimed they did go and none of them are running for a public office in Connecticut. So…

What is your point?

hawkdriver on May 18, 2010 at 10:36 AM

You know – it’s just incredible to me that Adm Boorda committed suicide over a “V” that he wore on his Navy Acheivement Medal that he arguably didn’t earn.

Yet you have all these Democrats who just outright LIE about stuff like this. How much balderdash does it to take to LIE about serving in Vietnam? How warped does your pyschological makeup have to be to think that it’s alright to lie about that? How mentally derranged does one have to be to think one can lie about something like this to the whole public and not get caught?

Yet, he’s not the only one. John Kerry LIED about being in Cambodia in Christmas, 1968. Joe Biden LIED about his helicopter being “forced down” by fierce Taliban and Al Queda. Hillary Clinton LIED about taking heavy fire while she was attempting to land her helo in Bosnia.

They freakin’ LIE about the Iraq war – and claim they didn’t support it now when there is obviously YouTube video showing them vigorously supporting the war. They LIE about ObamaCare reducing the cost of premiums and saving employers THREE THOUSAND PERCENT on their health insurance costs. Yeah – they just lie about the laws of MATH – make them up out of whole cloth because they sound good. And now we know that ObamaCare isn’t saving companies money – it’s costing companies BILLIONS. They LIE about the cost of ObamaCare to taxpayers – it’s over a TRILLION dollars now!

FREAKIN’ LIARS!

They all should be locked up.

We’ve got to do something about this – but electing a bunch of Scott Brown’s isn’t the answer – because the likes of him won’t call them on this stuff.

This is ridiculous – they think we are idiots or something out here.

Well, well, well. Another lying Dem. Am I surprised? No. Am I disappointed? No. Am I enlightend? Not particularly. They are starting a new stereotype. Dems=Liars. The only way to get rid of them is to defeat their lying @sses. Let the bloodletting begin! Today is the day to show them how it is done.

What a POS he is.
What a lieing b*tch his manager is, she tried to move the point of the article “Unlike many of his peers, Dick Blumenthal voluntarily joined the Marine Corps Reserves in 1970 and served for six months in Parris Island, SC and six years in the reserves. He received no special treatment from anyone.” The problem is not that he received special treatment ya dumb turd. THe problem is he tried to tie his wagon to those that served in combat. His comment
“When we returned, we saw nothing like this,” Mr. Blumenthal said. “Let us do better by this generation of men and women.”…Implies that he was in Vietnam.
There are lies, damn lies , then there are F*cking facts.
He is a F*cking liar. There are 2 things that I find the most despicable in the world. Child molesters and people that LIE about their military service. I spent 8 years from 1975-1983, all I did was bust a wrench. I make sure when I talk with people that I never faced any of the hardships that the Vietnam Era vets did.

I sure in the hell hope the people hold his feet to the fire and roast them.

I love his opponent he went from E1 to O6.
2 count em 2 bronze stars.
DAYUM , he is a registed bad-ass.

ColdWarrior57 on May 18, 2010 at 11:38 AM

Isn’t it possible Blumenthal simply misspoke? He was in service during the Vietnam War, perhaps that’s what he meant to say.

Unless there’s a pattern of him trying to impress people with a false impression of his military service, a one-time mistake shouldn’t be a game changer. Nobody is perfect, even politicians. Especially politicians.

hawksruleva on May 18, 2010 at 11:47 AM
