Rahm: We “screwed up the messaging” on Israel

posted at 10:45 am on May 16, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

How badly has Barack Obama’s support eroded among Jewish voters over Israeli-US relations?  Enough to send Rahm Emanuel to a meeting with rabbis in the White House to offer an apology.  Saying that the Obama administration had “screwed up the messaging” about his support for Israel, Emanuel promised that the White House would work to undo the damage:

The Obama administration has “screwed up the messaging” about its support for Israelover the past 14 months, and it will take “more than one month to make up for 14 months,” White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel said on Thursday to a group of rabbis called together for a meeting in the White House.

“During the elections there were doubts about President Obama’s support for Israel, and now they have resurfaced,” Emanuel said, according to one of those who participated in the meeting. “But concerning policy, we have done everything that we can that is in Israel’s security – and long-range interests. Watch what the administration does.” …

These comments came during the second of two White House meetings with a carefully selected slate of 15 rabbis from across the US representing the Orthodox, Reform and Conservative streams. The first meeting took place on April 20, shortly after Obama was widely perceived to have treated Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu shabbily during their last White House meeting.

In addition to Emanuel and Ross, the other administration officials in the meetings were Dan Shapiro, the deputy national security adviser who supervises policy for Israel and its neighbors; Susan Sher, the chief White House liaison to the Jewish community; and Danielle Borin, associate director of the White House Office of Public Engagement and special assistant to Vice President Joe Biden.

Ross opened Thursday’s meeting, saying he hoped that the rabbis “had seen the manifestations of the change” of the administration’s tone since they met the first time a month ago.

When did the Obama administration become aware that they had “screwed up the messaging”?  About the same time that Jewish voters began abandoning them.  That would have been shortly before Chuck Schumer scolded them over fumbling the alliance, and perhaps just after leaking that Obama would “impose” a peace plan on Israel.  With the midterms looking disastrous, Emanuel and his team want to shore up support in one of the most reliable voting blocs Democrats have.

The problem is that it’s not just the messaging.  Obama set peace negotiations back to pre-Oslo days by demanding a halt to building in an area of Jerusalem that hadn’t ever been a hurdle to talks in the past.  He insulted Israel’s Prime Minister in a visit to the White House, and has repeatedly demanded concessions from Israel as preconditions to talks with an enemy that still refuses to acknowledge Israel’s right to exist.  This White House has objectively been the most hostile American administration to Israel since its founding.

If they just try to spin the messaging while keeping to the same strategies, don’t expect it to fool anyone.  Pleasing words mean less and less after the track record of the last sixteen months.  This looks like a desperate plea from Emanuel to the rabbis asking them to ignore Obama’s obvious hostility towards Israel in order to get more Democrats elected.

Update: Pablo asks a great question in the comments: “What, Samantha Power couldn’t make it?”  And let’s not forget last month’s leak to the New York Times about the White House intention to “balance” the alliance with Israel with “other interests.”

I explain to my Jewish friends that anti-capitalism and anti-Semitism overlap extensively as ideas. They somewhat accept my point, but it doesn’t seem to affect their Democratic leanings, yet. You have to remember the tragic facts of Jewish history. We were so shabbily treated in Europe that many Jews became Marxists. The Russian and Hungarian Communists Revolutions were lead by Jews. (Lenin was a quarter Jewish and rest of the leaderships were completely Jewish.) I’m hoping our reaction to Obama will move us to the right, but I don’t want the Democrats to become an openly anti-Israel party. The Democrats do win elections from time to time.

I remember having lunch at Mario Batelli’s restaurant here in Los Angeles with one of my best Jewish friends and asking her, in light of Obamas relationship with so many anti semetics, why did she vote for for him? and her anemic response was we needed change. I asked doesn’t that bother you? and she said a little.

I don’t understand why with their history of being persecuted they would trust Obama or his crew… And if their support of him increases again…well it will be all over except for the weeping and wailing.

The Obama administration has “screwed up the messaging” about its support for Israel

No, actually, the administration of B. Hussein Obeyme couldn’t be MORE clear about it’s [non]support of Israel. Marxists see everyone/everything as a means to obtain their goals. If sacrificing the nation of Israel is what it takes, well, there’s always room under The Bus.

This White House has objectively been the most hostile American administration to Israel since its founding.

And then there is the Central Command “Posture Statement” filed by Petraeus’s staff with the Senate Armed Services Committee, which pretty much lays blame on Israel for all our problems in the Middle East, but I guess we don’t want to go into that.

MB4 on May 16, 2010 at 2:06 PM

For these tools, everything is about ‘messaging.’ Thats why they think voters will return to them when they get their bullshit propaganda right with a few more media consultants. We should be happy they’re still in their bubble.

Rahm and Schumer are pathetic kapos… It is a toss-up as to which is the “oberkapo.” When evangelical Christians are more vocal than Jews are about the Obama Administration’s arrogant, obstinate, hostile policies vis-a-vis Israel, something is wrong. One lovely exception: Ms Pamela Geller of atlas shrugs blog — she has had the bead on Barack Obama’s attitude toward Israel since before he was elected.

Maybe I’m nitpicking but why would this guy choose to use the words “screw up” in front of rabbis. It just sounds disrepectful, given the audience.

It was “focus group approved” above “screwed the pooch”, “spanked the monkey” (do you really need an explanation?) “SNAFU” “FUBAR” (too military) “Cocked up” (too British).

There’s more but it gets kinda crude from here on.

Naw! Really? Doubts? How could that be?

“Let me be absolutely clear. Israel is a strong friend of Israel’s. It will be a strong friend of Israel’s under a McCain…administration. It will be a strong friend of Israel’s under an Obama administration. So that policy is not going to change.”
–Amman, Jordan, July 22, 2008

Let me be absolutely clear. Water is wet, Water is very wet. Water will be very wet under a McCain … administration. Water will be very wet under an Obama administration. So that policy is not going to change.

How could anyone possibly question Obama’s support for Israel with a statement like that!

I’ve been wondering for a very long time what it would take for any of the many ultra-loyal subgroups of the Democratic party to begin to figure out how badly the Democratic party abuses them and takes their votes for granted. The Dem leadership is convinced (with good evidence) that they can do any horrible thing they want to Jews, blacks, gays, etc, and these groups will always vote for them in overwhelming numbers. They lie straight to their faces, and they keep coming back for more.

Catch a clue, gullible Dem voters! They’re not going to call you in the morning.

Don’t forget his call to support entrepreneurship in muslim-majority countries (while crushing it here in the US). This administration sees terrorists where none exist (the Tea Party) but can’t bring themselves to recognize the very real existance of islamo-fascist terrorism.
Obama’s words and actions reveal his preference for all things Muslim and disdain for all things Jewish.

Two huge factors to this admission:

1) In a recent poll only 42% of Jewish-Americans would vote to reelect Obama now (he received 78% of the vote in 2008).

2) The creation of the Jews for Sarah Palin website by independent Jewish-Americans.

Obama and his various mouthpieces are liars as most of us already know.
From Audacity of Hope: “I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.”

Ya caint get much uglier than war…

Bunker Busters sent to Israel stopped by Obama before reaching their destination. Parts for helicopters? Not for Israel. Respect? Not for Israel. Note how Obama reaches out to our islamic enemies time after time. I see a pattern.

Obama embraces and adores islam. Judaism? Totally and unarguably incompatible with islam. Opposites. How can one embrace slavery and Liberty at the same time as islam is slavery. It is the totalitarian government that he dreams of.

Army Brat on May 16, 2010 at 6:20 PM

SANTA on May 16, 2010 at 6:27 PM

There is one infallible way to know if Obama is lying when he talks about Israel: If his lips are moving, he’s lying. He can’t help it, it’s the “Chicago Way”. Most politicians only lie once in a while, if they have to; Obama only tells the truth once in a while, if he absolutely has to, and if there’s no other option. Even then, he’ll shade it just a bit, just to stay in practice.

kenprice on May 16, 2010 at 6:59 PM

The messaging is not the problem. The Obama administration hates Israel and is clear about it. Obama is a Muslims and acts like one. Rahm is a very deceiptful person. He and Soros both hate themselves and displace that on others.

Decades ago it made sense for Judiasm to have a strong sense of supporting people in need back when the typical recipient felt a sense of obligation to get up and help the next guy. As a result of the governmental programs though, now there is a culture of multi-generational entitlement, whether it be in unions, perpetual affirmative action, or whatever. I know many Jews have picked up on that, I hope the rest do soon.

I do agree it makes sense for them to keep on the good side of Democrats, or that end of the boat would quickly fill up with all the anti-semites.

Obama will win a minimum of 77% of the Jewish vote in 2012 if he runs, just like he did in 2008. If he doesn’t run, whoever the Democrat candidate is will win 77% or more of the Jewish vote. It’s a prediction.

Many Jewish voters are religious atheists and 77% or more are far left knee-jerk liberals. That trumps Israel, unfortunately.

I wish and hope that Jewish Americans start to care about the survival of Israel. I wish and hope all Americans would really consider what the destruction of Israel will mean for civilized people all over the world. I’m not holding my breath, though.

Why is this group of rabbis taking the meeting at all? So Team Obama can lie to their faces?

As a generality, I simply don’t understand the Jewish demographic. Despite this little turn away from Obama, it’ll turn right around and vote Liberal/Progressive at the drop of a hat.

Seriously, why are they meeting with this administration? It’s a leopard that’s not going to change its spots. Worse, it’ll deny even having them while blaming you for seeing or misunderstanding them even as they pander with a “Jewish representative.”

Happy to see his people suffer, so long as he’s living in the lap of luxury. Even though it takes him betraying his people to achieve, and keep it.

I hope the Jewish people wake up. I don’t see good things in the future, with this administration. Obama’s made it patently clear he’s not fond of Jews.

J_Crater on May 17, 2010 at 5:04 PM

Somehow all of this just doesn’t ring true. Rahm Emanuel is the Chief of Staff in the Obama Administration. Do you actually believe, after the treatment of Netanyahu, he wasn’t informed of what was being done and why? That isn’t screwing up the message, I think everyone got the message, that was doing it and then seeing the fall-out from it and trying to play CYA.

I have no idea how much Muslim training Obama got (and I don’t intend to get into the is he or isn’t he argument) but we do know there is a considerable amount of anti-semitism involved with Muslim education. We also don’t know what Rahm Emanuel thinks of the Jewish State, which would beg the question as to WHEN he knew what was going to happen when Netanyahu came to the White House.

I guess this point is that, as inept as everyone claims the Bush Administration was, this one has completely screwed up our foreign policy. Who used to be our friends now are leary of us and who used to be our enemies are laughing at us and using us. I don’t believe either of these are good things, but I could be wrong.

bflat879 on May 17, 2010 at 7:40 PM

When did the Obama administration become aware that they had “screwed up the messaging”? About the same time that Jewish voters began abandoning them.

Puh-leeze. The April poll was bogus. Obama could lead the PLO destruction of the nation of Israel, and 75% of American Jews would still vote for him.

For Liberals, there is only one rule:

Liberalism Uber Alles!
