Pelosi: Hey, quit your job – we’ll pay for your health coverage!
posted at 10:55 am on May 15, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines “entrepreneur” as “one who organizes, manages, and assumes the risks of a business or enterprise.” Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats defines entrepreneurial somewhat differently, as this clip from Nicholas Ballasy at CNS News demonstrates. Pelosi tells an audience in DC that ObamaCare is an “entrepreneurial bill,” because it will let people quit being productive and allow them to leech off of … entrepreneurs:
We see it as an entrepreneurial bill, a bill that says to someone, if you want to be creative and be a musician or whatever, you can leave your work, focus on your talent, your skill, your passion, your aspirations because you will have health care.
In other words, we should all just join the circus and let Mom and Dad pick up the bill. That’s not entrepreneurial; it’s a welfare state. If anyone wants to see just what kind of innovation that produces, we only need to see the economies of the Western European nanny states. George Orwell would stand in awe of Nancy Pelosi, and not in a good way.
Update: As commenters note, Pelosi said almost exactly the same thing two months ago. However, she was not quite as blunt about it in March:
So, you can‘t—everybody has so much to gain from this, small businesses, as I said, seniors, young people, women, our economy. Think of an economy where people could be an artist or a photographer or a writer without worrying about keeping their day job in order to have health insurance or that people could start a business and be entrepreneurial and take risk, but not job loss because of a child with asthma or someone in the family is bipolar—you name it, any condition—is job locking.
Or join the circus! If you want to know where it is, go to Washington DC and look for the big building across from the Washington Monument.

She made the same stupid remark a couple months ago before the bill was rammed through. The woman is certifiable. And who’s gonna pay for their housing? Their food? Their power bill? Their phone bill? How are they gonna put gas in their car?
Besides, don’t we already have a program(Medicaid) to assist people who can’t afford health insurance? What the hell do we need Obamacare for then?

This is simply the Id of the Left emerging. With power, comes the Id — the inner child. Call it the inverse “Spiderman rule”, or the “Lord of the Flies” principle. The Left does not see power in terms of “great responsibility,” but rather of gratification of what they want. The arrogance of the Left does not permit them to see how this is interpreted or of how it might come to an end. Also, just like children.

Peloser leaves no doubt that liberalism is really a “progressive” mental disorder resulting in insanity. Look around and it is everywhere. Holder at the congressional hearing showing complete incompetence. Napolitano over and over not having a clue about homeland security. Gore just reinforces his insanity every time he opens his mouth. It goes on and on on a daily basis. Where does this end?

It astounds me as to the type of hermeutically sealed universe that Nancy Pelosi lives in. She is so unclear on the concept of the entrepreneurial spirit that is completely defies description, much less general understanding. Her general understanding as the concept of economics itself borders on madness.
This woman clearly wants the United States to be a country that will hand out virtually everything, regardless of if the person earns it or not, without the least bit of concern as to who will end up paying for whatever it is in the long run.
This is why the Democrats need to have the House of Representatives yanked out from under them in November, and why Pelosi needs to be removed from the office of Speaker of The House.
Because if the absolute worst happened and this woman was given the power of the Presidency, this country would be in ruins within a year, if not sooner.
Nancy Pelosi is without question the literal living breathing epitome of the expression “unfit to serve”.

After cap & trade most of these considerations won’t exist. The target carbon limit they’ve set for the US is that of 1910. However thats not per capita, that’s total, so to reach their aspiration we will be living at the same level of energy usage as the American’s of 1867.

Rand got something wrong in her books. She presumed that the moochers would endure some degradation of the spirit in the process of their looting, that they would find some way to be beaten down by their thievery.
These people are absolutely overjoyed at the notion that they will receive privileges unearned. They delight at the notion that earners and producers will have their earnings and production taken from them at the point of a gun and the jangle of prison keys in their ears.
We live in dangerous times, when success is so powerfully and simultaneously demanded and despised.
Sgt Steve on May 15, 2010 at 12:06 PM
I’m still on the fence; I largely have decided that libs aren’t really this stupid and clueless, but rather that there is actual malignant intent in what they say and do.
She’d love to see scores of people jump ship, become unemployed artists who rely on big government for healthcare, funding, etc. It’s all part of the quest for control and power. The more beholden you are to her/them for your survival, the more control they have over what you do, what you think, how you vote, etc.

The fact that artists, photographers, writers, etc. are the only jobs she can think of speaks volumes. She simply has no clue what it takes to provide the standard of living the average person aspires to, much less the obscene lifestyle she enjoys. Has she ever seen a factory, done a math problem, built a bridge, or served fast food? Someone has to do these things for them to be available to us, but she thinks it just happens because she has never had to work. Honestly, her description of life and work sounds like those of a middle school girl. It is truly frightening that she holds the power she does.

Does health care include food, clothing, shelter, transportation, communication, education and entertainment? Will that even matter, after everyone has quit their jobs?
underdog on May 15, 2010 at 12:29 PM
Helth care should have absolutely nothing to do with one’s employer. We should have our own health insurance just like we have our own life, automobile, and homeowner’s insurance.
Back in WWII, the government instituted wage controls so companies began providing health plans as fringe benefits to reward employees beyond the salary caps.
In fact, I would be perfectly happy with my employer not paying any of my health insurance at all. Instead, they could put a lesser amount every payday into my health savings plan. That would allow me to increase my deductible and possibly use it to cover premiums should I lose the job. Last time I looked, a policy that covered me and my family would cost me about $500 a month with a low deductible. I could take that down to between $250 and $300 by increasing the deductible. So imagine my employer paying $300 a month into my health savings plan instead of a policy and say I keep a low deductible. At the end of 5 years, I have 18,000 in the health savings account. Say I lose my job. I have thee years worth of premium payments in my health savings account.
If the states allowed individuals to band together into groups and allowed insurance companies to compete across state lines, premiums would be even cheaper.
We don’t need a mechanism for government to provide health care, we need a mechanism for people to have their own policies outside of employers or government and an IRA-like health savings plan that employers could contribute to.

tommer74 on May 15, 2010 at 12:39 PM
Pelosi does not even understand her own bill.
The artist, musician or whatever still has to pay for their health care….unless they make NO money.
But if they make no money as the artist, musician or whatever how are they going to pay for everything else…like food, housing, paint, canvas, all other entrepreneurial business expenses?
And if they do make a living as an artist, musician or whatever they have to file an income tax form and if they can not prove they are paying for health insurance the govt. fines them and takes the money to pay for insurance.
This is why the govt. is trying to pass financial reform that allows the govt. to snoop into all your bank accounts to see if your reporting all your income.
albill on May 15, 2010 at 12:40 PM
Job-locking is a problem. People can’t go off and do something crazy because they need the job for health insurance. The solution, however, is not this monstrosity they’ve passed. You could achieve the same thing by decoupling health insurance from employment. If you went full bore with HSAs and catastrophic care policies, people could stuff money into the HSA while they had steady employment and when they had a little health care nest egg built up, they could quit their job and go seek their dreams.
As a side note, if you’re a Democrat and you hate the “evil” insurance companies, HSAs and high-deductible policies would remove those companies from 90% of the health care transactions.
