Say, isn’t Holder profiling Arizonans?

posted at 10:55 am on May 14, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Let’s see. Reaching conclusions based on a “glance”? Check. Relying on hearsay and rumor about a people instead of using independent thought? Check. Putting law-enforcement resources into attacking something based solely on appearances? Check. By golly, I think Andy McCarthy may be on to something here:

He hasn’t read the Arizona immigration law, even though reading the law is the basic duty of any lawyer (let alone the U.S. Attorney General) who is called on to assess a legal situation.

Thus, he hasn’t got reasonable suspicion that Arizonans are violating the Constitution, even though reasonable suspicion is the basic investigative standard we expect law-enforcement to satisfy before officials harass Americans with stepped up scrutiny. …

If a police officer, without taking elementary investigative steps to inform himself about the facts of a situation, and thus without reasonable suspicion, simply assumed a person must be guilty of wrongdoing based on the police officer’s avowed prejudice, what would Eric Holder call it?

Holder certainly wouldn’t call it responsible law-enforcement. The irony is, of course, that the Arizona law doesn’t allow for profiling, and its most recent amendment removes any remaining ambiguity about when police can investigate residency status, which is when they have probable cause to hold someone on another issue. Holder’s knee-jerk reaction says plenty about bigotry, but not about people in Arizona.

Allahpundit posted a link to the lengthy C-SPAN video in which Holder admitted that he had only “glanced” at the bill, but our friend Greg Hengler clips the answer as part of a “two faces of Eric Holder” montage from Townhall.  Congressman Ted Poe (R-TX) on the panel makes the point that the Arizona bill is only ten pages long, or less than 1/200th the size of ObamaCare. How long would it have taken Holder to read it before shooting his mouth off about it?

Update: Noel Sheppard has more of the exchange with the committee.

Update II: Fausta also has more, and I updated the post above to identify Rep. Ted Poe (R-TX).

How long would it have taken Holder to read it before shooting his mouth off about it?

You know, it’s even short enough for the hearing to take a 15 minute recess while he reads it.

Obama’s Justice Department is first and foremost a political organization. If they happen to solve a crime along the way, with the help of a street vendor, well, that’s great. Then, they just have to try to understand exactly how George Bush’s recession drove the criminal to act out.

Even if he read the law it wouldn’t make any difference to him. Arizona is far more of a threat to Holder than Islamic terrorists. Has he even decided yet where they are going to try KSM and his pals?

It seems to me, that Holder and Obama went thru life being given free passes on EVERYTHING!!! They don’t have to read anything, they don’t have to listen to both sides, they don’t have to be bipartisan, fair, or reasonable, or rational. All that matters is what they think and believe. So why isn’t everyone giving them free passes when they choose to rule as judgemental, uninformed, racists jerks?

capejasmine on May 14, 2010 at 11:07 AM

As Obama said, information can be a distraction, so why actually read the law when you can just spout ideology?

When you’re “brilliant” (and all Democrats are deemed thus), you don’t need facts, figures, anything at all really.

You just glance at something and immediately you know how the liberal establishment is going to look at it because they (and you) are so predictable.

That’s what passes for “brilliance” these days.

Yet these clowns routinely pass trillion-dollar legislation and speak out for or against bills without reading any of them first.

Clinton’s AG Janet Reno was dangerous. Holder, in comparison, is merely incompetent. Usually I would say the incompetent one would cause us less damage, but unfortunately the stakes are too high, as evidenced by the recent bombing attempt in NYC. Ugh, you know things are bad when I’m pining for the Clinton administration!

No, they really couldn’t and that’s the problem.

The Army doesn’t promote soldiers to the rank of General, because they make pretty speeches, because of their family, because they are a celebrity.

Soldiers lead a platoon, then a company, then a battalion, all before they make General. They work in the trenches.

Our politicians are people who have been at the 35,000 foot level their entire careers. They have no idea how any of their edicts go from policy to execution, which is our whole problem.

We have a bunch of useless people in charge of things, that’s the bottom line.

Somebody needs to call out the “progressives” like Holder and their shills in the press for their own blind racism, because, contrary to the bigoted assumptions made by paternalistic liberals, the border issue isn’t just about hispanics.

Those of us who are concerned about the federal government’s laxity in protecting this nation’s borders have got to start making a much bigger deal of the fact that it’s not just innocent mexican & central americans pouring into the US to mow lawns & wash dishes.

And it’s not even about all the Mexican ex-convicts bringing their bloody drug wars onto US soil & killing innocent people (mostly those of hispanic heritage, by the way) in our border states.

There are Iranians and Pakistanis & Afghanis & Yemenis & people from all over the world who’ve been caught sneaking across our southern border in the past year, and the ones who were detained are a mere drop in the bucket. As long as people from overseas can enter Mexico or Central American countries & evade Mexican authorities on their way north, they’ve pretty much got free access to anywhere in the United States, whether they’re on the TSA’s no-fly list or not.

And rest assured, Mr. Holder’s boss’ failure to vigilantly protect that entry point hasn’t escaped the attention of anybody, including those from all corners of the globe and including those who would do this nation harm.

This is NOT just an issue of illegal immigration by hispanics seeking a better life or of ‘racist’ attitudes by those who are tired of watching people from countries – countries which would themselves arrest any US citizen for sneaking across their border – demand that they and they alone merely because of THEIR beknighted ‘race’ be given special privileges to jump the line ahead of Chinese, Indian, Liberian or South African immigrants or members of any other racial & ethnic group who respect our laws by scrupulously following them when they emigrate here.

This is above all an issue of national security. That border’s porosity constitutes a very dire ongoing threat to the welfare & well-being of ALL the people who live in our country, both legal, and ironically enough, illegal ones as well!

So the whole issue needs to be turned on its head & thrown right back in the laps of Holder & his fellow so-called progressives: what do THEY have against undocumented hispanic immigrants that they would continue to advocate for a border policy which puts those illegal immigrants already in the US in such grave peril from a potential terrorist attack?

In my opinion, the biggest flaw in our overall political system is that it attracts “lifers” who are usually mediocre at best.

People who are successful, driven, and smart (generally on the right) will seek bigger challenges in the private sector.

The best and the brightest aren’t going to become civil servants or career politicians (yes, there are always exceptions).

The vast majority in the civil servant/politician/community organizer world spend their lives in a system that rewards mediocrity, offers no challenges and lacks any risk/reward scenarios. That system does not help them develop leadership skills or personal accountability.

The private sector will weed out the lazy, the dishonest, the stupid. The public sector protects them.

Nominated by Obama to be Attorney General, the chief law enforcement officer in the land to serve the interests of Obama, who knew he could count on Holder to prostitute the DOJ as he had done during the Clinton regime. Committed perjury before the Senate repeatedly, and continues to do so every single time he makes an appearance. Probably the biggest lie he told was when he pledged to keep politics out of the Justice Department.

This issue is truly a tipping point moment. It’s fascinating to watch.

DC simply can’t imagine what’s going on. And this law they cannot toss off as being a bunch of Teabagger nutcases, since the national polls clearly say otherwise.

They are stuck.

Worse, the unions are now calling for an end to Federal funds for Homeland Security. Doesn’t that tell the tale?

Worse, real journalists are actually digging into the “Ethics Course” that made AZ look like apes in the classroom to cut out.

Well, take a gander:

9 on Your Side took a closer look. One of the textbooks that TUSD uses in its ethnic studies program is Chicano!, by F. Arturo Rosales. The book teaches the history of racism and oppression in the United States directed against the Mexican, Mexican-American, and Hispanic populations. As the name implies, a large portion of the textbook is devoted to the Chicano movement that sprang up to fight social injustice and to push for civil rights. There are some similarities between the Chicano movement tactics that the book documents and the tactics some TUSD students have practicing recently.

Now, many hate my liberal/moderate stances, but I suspected that the ethics classes were a burr for good reason.

I think the idea of ethics studies is well-intentioned, but the reality is that the rabble-rousers are the ones writing the textbooks.

Should any taxpayer be asked to pay for stirring up teens to protest?

No. It’s commonsense.

And that’s why this immigration issue is going to honestly topple the Dems.

They have been lying to the public for years and years.

It’s coming undone.

AnninCA on May 14, 2010 at 12:21 PM

I love this. Liberals do what’s politically correct, and that makes them think they are moral and right. But look at what Holder and others are doing to the people of Arizona. The war against racial discrimination was won long ago. They keep fighting that war, the last war. What’s today’s war? Easy if you think about it. Today’s moral fight is to call people out on false charges of racism. Some of us are fighting that war, but we’re in the minority. Keep fighting the good fight. And for those fighting the last war, wake up, look around at what’s going on.

As I have repeatedly asserted the administration is not inept, they are part and parcel of the same forces we see at work in Greece and the EU in general, namely a coalition of leftist forces. From Green Peace to MoveOn to the Lawyers Guild to the Students for a Democratic Society and a plethora of others, these supposedly do-gooder types have formed an alliance towards a single end. During the cold war these groups were actively supported and sponsored by the communist Soviet Union with the purpose of underminig capitalism and the promotion of collectivism. Since the fall of of the USSR and the de facto capitalist/bureaucratic system now in China, they have abandoned the communist/socialist labels and are pursuing the same agenda via an enviromental/social justice banner to “save the earth”.

Green is new Red!

So take a look around you, at the housing market, at our borders and most dramatically at Greece. Tel;l the efforts at implementing the Cloward/Piven strategy has been inept.

We are at the event horizon of epic battle between individualist liberalism (liberalism as defined by Hume, Smith, Burke, etal) and collectivist authoritarianism. The surest route to defeat is the underestimation of your opponent. They have underestimated the backlash here in the states and are now seek a desperate final push to secure our ultimate destruction, we must not duplicate there error by doing the same.

For too long we have snidely derided academic “kooks” harmlessly pontificating from their ivory towers/asylums only to find they have permeated our entire educational sytem and indoctrinated two generations of recruits who now occupy positions of power throughtout non-profits, NGO’s, Labor and even industry and finance. We were caught napping as the opposition marshaled their forces, and now we find ourselves in the final stages of a globalist take over.

To dispasrage those that now hold the reins of all the instruments of our governance is contradictory, if they were so incompetent how did they do this?

If we are to weather this storm clarity in assessment, feirce resolve and more than bit of of luck will needed to preserve the hard fought liberties we have taken for granted for too long.

Archimedes on May 14, 2010 at 12:43 PM

“Ethics” as with “morals” mean anything, nothing specific until spelled out. The are criminal ethics made legal by Obama during his “pin stripe” Chicago enterprises, for example. One’s morals could be to do whatever it takes to succeed, no matter, as with Obama and every “successful” politician. Those successful politicians whose home base are law abiding tax paying citizens are a disappearing minority as most constituencies are as corrupt as their politicians.

Driver: What? Umm. You got to be kidding me. I was obeying the law. I didn’t speed and obeyed all traffic lights and signs.
Officer: Doesn’t matter, all I need to pull you over is because of where you are from.
Driver: In Arizona they have a law that specifically forbids you from pulling me over for any reason other than from where it looks like I come from.

END

Holder is definitely prejudiced if he hasn’t even read the 10 page Arizona law to protect their citizens and do the job the Federal Government has REFUSED or FAILED to do….!

Its because the law is not in farsi.

jbh45 on May 14, 2010 at 1:53 PM

I wonder why the MSM hasn’t come out with a big headline story about a ‘victim’ of this new law? They usually work pretty hard and are pretty much on top of any opportunity to show up their opponents.

Maybe they too are just too busy with their ipods and xboxes?

Holder is a racist!

Johan Klaus on May 14, 2010 at 2:13 PM

Pure unadulterated racist and marxist. Should be handled as they did anyone for treason in the late 1700′s or 1800′s. Clearly an enemy of the state.

wepeople on May 14, 2010 at 2:20 PM

Did he really say you can tell what it is by the reaction it by amnesty promoters?

So when a kid is getting beat up he must deserve it or the other kids wouldn’t be beating him?

Yep sounds like a liberal.

I’m thinking this is going to put another nail in the coffin of this administration.

Illegal immigration is a problem. The only ones who don’t think so are the socialists La Raza, and the current government regime.

It’s time for some actual Legal Justice!

Take care of Legal Justice and social justice will follow, as much as is humanly possible.

Maybe y’all have already seen it, but:

FOX is now running video of Holder absolutely refusing to admit that “Radical Islam” is responsible for any terror attacks.

LegendHasIt on May 14, 2010 at 1:18 PM

I saw it earlier. It is the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen.

It shall be used to show why Obama shouldn’t get another term. He, and his Attorney General don’t even understand who the terrorists are.

Every time something happens the first thing out of their mouths is “it’s an isolated person, with no ties to terrorism” which has proven the be a lie every single time. Why do they keep saying it?

Incompetence at the top.

petunia on May 14, 2010 at 3:34 PM

A tool has at least one meaningful purpose. Holder doesn’t.

He can read? I think he should stop using his middle name, Eric and go by his first name, Richard.
