The 73% fringe that supports AZ immigration law
posted at 12:55 pm on May 13, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
Barack Obama and the Democrats keep trying to paint the new law in Arizona on immigration as some sort of misguided effort by a frustrated fringe. Unfortunately for them, a new poll from Pew Research shows that they’re the fringe — even in their own party. Almost three-quarters of Americans support Arizona’s new law, and almost two-thirds of Democrats support the already-law requirement for immigrants to carry ID:
The public broadly supports a new Arizona law aimed at dealing with illegal immigration and the law’s provisions giving police increased powers to stop and detain people who are suspected of being in the country illegally.
Fully 73% say they approve of requiring people to produce documents verifying their legal status if police ask for them. Two-thirds (67%) approve of allowing police to detain anyone who cannot verify their legal status, while 62% approve of allowing police to question people they think may be in the country illegally.
But that’s just those nutty Republicans, right? Wrong. While Democrats split evenly on the law itself, the two provisions that caused the most controversy get broad support from Obama’s own party:
However, majorities of Democrats approve of two of the law’s principal provisions: requiring people to produce documents verifying legal status (65%) and allowing police to detain anyone unable to verify their legal status (55%).
That’s not the only bad news for Obama from Pew. While they have his overall job approval at a perhaps-generous 47%, his numbers on immigration have tanked over the last six months. They started off badly in November, at 31/48, making immigration one of his weakest policy areas, but he’s managed to lose 12 points in the gap since. He’s now at 25/54, down from 29/47 a month ago. His dismissive attitude towards Arizona’s law has damaged him.
Of course, it’s not just his remarks about the law that’s the problem. The federal government all but forced Arizona to act after its inaction allowed Phoenix to become the kidnapping capital of the world. Violence plagues Arizonans, natural-born citizens and legal immigrants alike, and they’re tired of getting no response from Washington. They want a common-sense approach to law enforcement, such as actually enforcing the law. If Obama won’t do it, they will.
The AZ immigration law is only getting more popular, not less. It’s making Obama look more and more like an ivory-tower elitist and less every day like someone who understands the problems of people in the country he leads. With numbers like these, don’t expect a push on amnesty any time soon, or perhaps ever. This appears to have become a big game-changer.

It may be about time for Obama to become President of all the United States, instead of all the states the Democrats control. If he doesn’t know how to do that, he’ll be a one term president because he can’t win re-election from those liberal states.
This law has been lied about since it was passed (just read the article you have posted from the SF Chronicle and see how it completely misrepresents the law. Obama has even lied about what the law says.
If you don’t read the law, you shouldn’t be able to commment on it.

When I lived in CA, the only car incidents I ever suffered were from having my vehicle hit by unlicensed uninsured illegal immigrants. One time my parked car was hit by joy-riding drunk illegal immigrants who scattered from the scene. Another, I was rear ended by a McDonald’s employee on an errand driving his father’s car.
Neither time was I in any way reimbursed for my car’s damages (about $1400.00 worth of bodywork). Law enforcement just shrugged helplessly and looked the other way, even though they knew the identities of the immigrants.
In California, and perhaps elsewhere, people here illegally seem to have a license to play bumper cars with impunity.
It’s a lot easier being part of that “fringe,” when it’s cost me hard earned dollars. My experience is not uncommon. I support Arizona.

All this siding with foreigners illegally in the U.S.A (and their serf master employers) against Arizonians by Emperor in his own mind Obama, and by proxy against most Americans, as according to polls most Americans support Arizona, will, if anything, only fuel resentment of illegals.
If Obama does not realize this then he is a moron. If he does realize this then he is a psychopath..
It is hard to believe that Barack Hussein Obama is that much of a moron so the presumptive diagnosis must be that he is a psychopath. More specifically his pathology is that of a pyromaniac.
Obama is a President who will live in infamy. He is a warped man at war with his own country. Siding with a foreign nation, Mexico, and it’s invading nationals, against his own nation which he swore an oath to.
May a thousand breeding fleas come up across the southern border and infest themselves up Obama’s haughty nose.

Being from New Mexico and now in L.A., the leftward turn of NM is shocking. It used to be the outpost of Wild West, independant culture, but it’s become a nanny state with overbearing laws and police activity like I don’t see in socialist California. The libs have effectively recruited the Mexican population into a voting force, and they tell them what to support. I don’t have much hope for change for the better in highly-Latinized states. AZ has indeed bucked the trend.

In the best of all worlds, it’s going to be at least 2013 before border security is addressed seriously at the federal level, which is the only level at which it can be addressed effectively.
While that probably plays well for our side politically, a lot of bad stuff can happen in 2 1/2 years of sharing an open border with a failed state.

That’s because he solidified his Democrat support after ramming through Obamacare. Plus with the health care debate not leading the news every day, that’s stopped the hemorrhaging in his poll numbers.
But this is fool’s gold. His approval ratings in states he must have to secure reelection are not good. I honestly don’t know what he can run on in 2012 if the economy doesn’t sustain a serious recovery.

The variation in the laws is very sleight, the AZ law is more lenient, has stricter precautions to prevent “profiling” and makes the offence in question a Misdemeanor instead of a Felony as it is in the Federal version.
These points illustrate the blatant dishonesty of the media & the administration.

The reason I was wondering is because the outrage over this thing in the MSM makes it sound like Arizona is shooting people on sight.
You gave me what I was looking for. Now when the Libtard in the office next to me starts his rant again, I’ll ask him why he hasn’t called on Obama to revise the obviously racist federal statues that are much more strict than Arizona’s law.
Honestly, if it is as you say, I just don’t get the outrage over this unless everyone’s pissed that someone finally decided to water down a federal law and make a half-a$$ed attempt at enforcement.

Christy in New Jersey and people like Inhofe and DeMint and Pence just to mention a few come to mind in terms of Republican men who make themselves heard.
I think a lot of people, even people who have problems with the bill in Arizona, support the right of states to make these kinds of decisions for themselves and their citizens.
I also think the feds are looking at the wrong numbers. They see 700 miles of fence, overall illegal entry cut in half in 3 years, twice as many illegals leaving the country. They forget 370 kidnappings in Phoenix and 9.7% unemployment in Arizona. I saw this story on Fox the other day that showed the fence at Yuma. It is tight there. Most of the people coming into the state are coming in one county east of there. If they could do the same job in that county they did in Yuma, the people of Arizona might be a lot more satisfied.
Janet Napolitano was Governor of that state from 2003 to 2009, before that I think she was Attorney General and US Attorney. It is not as if she does not know the area. I just think they do not realize how that drug war has spilled over into Arizona in the last couple of years.
