Real moments of political genius: Obama’s NYC fundloser
posted at 10:56 am on May 13, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
Maybe I was a little too early on the Chutzpah Award yesterday, because Nancy Pelosi has some new competition. Tomorrow, Barack Obama will appear in New York City to praise the work of law-enforcement agencies in finding and stopping the terrorist that his counterterrorism efforts failed to stop before planting a bomb in Times Square. As Obama arrives, those same law-enforcement agencies will be cutting their budgets, thanks to an across-the-board cut of funding from DHS to NYC for fighting terrorism:
President Obama arrives in lower Manhattan Thursday afternoon to thank the NYPD for its heroic in an attempted Times Square bomb – but the photo-op may not go according to plan.
The Department of Homeland Security told congressional officials Wednesday that it’s moving to make cuts in anti-terror funding to New York City, less than two weeks after cops helped thwart and attempted car bombing in Times Square – an effort the White House has since pinned on the Pakistani Taliban.
The cuts, lawmakers were told, amount to about 25 percent for port security, and another 27 percent for transit security, according to several reports.
It’s not the first time that the federal government has proposed cutting some of the anti-terror funding to the Big Apple. The Bush administration proposed cuts in the spring of 2006 to both NYC and Washington DC’s anti-terror funding as part of an overall reduction of federal block grants to cities. Democrats howled over that proposal, although as my analysis at the time showed, it meant an overall reduction for New York City from 11.8% of all UASI funding to … 10.9%.
Of course, Bush didn’t cut those funds less than two weeks after a terrorist attack, either. He also didn’t propose holding terrorist trials in lower Manhattan’s federal court building. And for all of the talk about Bush’s cluelessness, he didn’t show in the Big Apple to sponge a little vicarious glory from the same law-enforcement agencies whose funding will get cut at the moment that the axe falls.
There may be time to rethink the block grants given to states and cities for anti-terror efforts, but it’s not when the federal government has let three terror plots come to fruition in the US — one of which would have killed at least hundreds of people in the city Obama plans to visit tomorrow. It takes a lot of chutzpah to show one’s face in the Big Apple to share a stage with the police officers whose funding will get cut. It takes a lot of political cluelessness, too.

Well, I’m certainly for thanking law enforcement, but let’s thank a civilian who was on the ball, too.
Let’s thank people who realize that we are still at risk, despite the best effforts of this dimwit and the dems who try to downplay the terrorism threat.
If people are aware and informed, then maybe they don’t make a phone call when they see something unusual.

Reading the article, it appears that NYC is losing money under one program but has already more than gained it all back (plus $47 million) under porkulous. Perhaps there is some sort of important budget game involved here, like perhaps it’s important keeping the baseline high in the DHS budget, but it seems like the city is getting all it was promised (at least from the article it does). I am always willing to believe the administration is screwing up royally but this not be one of those instances. If Bloomberg objects then there is probably something worth worrying about, but Schumer is the only one complaining so far and he is an idiot generally.
MTF on May 13, 2010 at 11:12 AM
Honestly, I think NY is so partisan that the President could walk in, set fire to the place, flip everyone off and leave and they’d give him a standing ovation because he wasn’t GWB.
Democrat constituencies are remarkably loyal even when their guy is doing the exact opposite of what they want. Bill Clinton was beloved not because he passed any ‘progressive’ legislation…he did the opposite in fact. He was a hero because he survived.

Giuliani’s election in 1993 showed there is a certain point which you can’t push even most New Yorkers past if you’re a liberal Democrat and expect them to just sit there and take it. The White House is probably gambling they can make this cut and not pay the price 30 months down the line, but if any successful attack finally does occur in the city after Obama’s funding cut (and the ensuing video of Chuckie Schumer decrying those cuts) and Barack has himself locked into a position where there won’t be a Republican politician for miles he can dump the blame onto.
He’ll probably still win New York City in 2012, but Upstate New York still is pretty red, and a lukewarm Obama turnout in the city over anger about his commitment to fighting terrorism could put the whole state in play two years down the line.

Notice how when Obama is screwing you, he likes to get all up in your face about it?
Like when he screwed the CIA by releasing top secret documents about CIA practices which made the CIA look bad and made their job alot harder. Obama was right there the next day at the CIA to revel in his deeds.
Or just recently when he canceled the biggest NASA projects, then immediately flew to Florida and read his golden teleprompters…NASA employees not welcome.
Now it’s New York City’s turn to get screwed by Obama. Enjoy Obama’s appearence New Yorkers! You voted for the guy. Maybe he’ll buy you flowers.

Obuma can’t make us a third world power if we have so much “stuff”. If you are unemployed and cannot find a job and taking assistance from the government, your vote is just as important as the business man trying to create jobs and provide a standard of living for his employees. Sad that Obuma prefers creating voters on the negative side of the equation rather than create something he is completely naive about. Obuma has to be the biggest threat to our country in our history because he just doesn’t have a clue how our country has evolved. Its politics with him and nothing else.
