It’s on: L.A. city council votes to boycott Arizona over immigration law

posted at 5:25 pm on May 12, 2010 by Allahpundit

This is even sweeter than San Francisco’s mini-boycott, thanks to L.A.’s growing reputation as a city destroyed by leftist orthodoxy. There are a million jokes that could be made but I’ll stick with this one from Arizona resident Exurban Jon: “They can only pay us in IOUs anyway.”

Los Angeles on Wednesday became the largest city yet to boycott Arizona over its tough new law targeting illegal immigration in a move that likely will affect some $8 million in contracts with the state.

The City Council voted 13-1 to bar Los Angeles from conducting business with Arizona unless the law is repealed. The vote followed an emotional council discussion during which many members noted that their ancestors were U.S. immigrants.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa already has said he would approve the boycott.

“Los Angeles the second-largest city in this country, an immigrant city, an international city. It needs to have its voice heard,’’ Councilman Ed Reyes said, according to the Los Angeles Times. “As an American, I cannot go to Arizona today without a passport. If I come across an officer who’s having a bad day and feels that the picture on my ID is not me, I can be … deported, no questions asked. That is not American.”

Contracts between Arizona and the city’s power department are unaffected, unless of course Arizona wants to play hardball and do a little boycotting of its own. Said Jan Brewer in reply, capturing the absurdity of the situation: “I find it really interesting that we have people out there that are attempting a boycott in favor of illegal actions in Arizona. That to me is just unbelievable.” Indeed, especially since there are legal challenges aplenty in the works, including one potentially from the Justice Department. If the law holds up in court, will L.A. rescind the boycott? Or will the acute constitutional judgment of slackjawed imbeciles like Ed Reyes, who very obviously hasn’t read the statute, carry the day? Note to Ed: There’s nothing in there requiring citizens to carry a passport or even a driver’s license, although if you’re stopped and do happen to have your license on you, that’ll end any police suspicions about illegality. And I’m reasonably certain that the protocol for dealing with suspected illegals isn’t (a) arrest, (b) immediate police ride to the border, (c) push over the fence. From what I understand, cops have computers and databases and, oh, all kinds of stuff to check people’s identity before forcibly removing them from the country. If ever you wondered how L.A. came to be in the state it’s in, look no further than the fact that this demagogic dope is one of the most powerful people in it.

As for L.A. possibly galvanizing a national backlash to the law, think again. New from Pew:

The partisan split on overall approval: 82 percent Republican, 64 percent independent, and 45 percent Democratic, although interestingly there’s majority support among Dems for each individual element polled. We’re all “Nazis” now, my friends. Exit question: The western conference finals between L.A. and “Los Suns” start Monday night. Whom to root for?

Meh! Go play with yourselves, Los Angeles.

Liberals screwed their state to near bankruptcy, and want to play as if they hold the chalice of morality. Give me a small break. You’ve ruined your state, ruined the people, and now you want to play sanctimonious on a real issue with real problems.

Again….go play with yourselves. It’s what you’ve been doing , all the while your city, and state go down the toilet.

60% of the students in our elementary school (in Southwestern Minnesota) are now Hispanic; not that I begrudge the kids anything, but if we’ve got numbers like this a thousand miles north of the border, the actual scope of the problem must be orders of magnitude worse than the official numbers indicate.

About a decade ago when I moved to one such town in MN, a few ( probably 5-6) individuals moved into the town to take up ( cash only) jobs as dishwashers etc. Just 5-6 individuals who were ‘working’, and the local schools saw an infusion of almost 50 kids withing a year. All these kids belonged to families , none of which were working but moved into town on the backs of the few illegals who were actually working. All these non-working adults used to do was hang out at Mankato mall and initiate conversations with the middle-eastern faces in the mall, who too were recent implants.

Same goes for San Fran, although I have to go there several times a year for medical reasons. San Fran is a FILTHY city.

Let’s boycott L.A. city!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Who is with me???

I agree and I,,, gulp, live here. If the commies on the city council vote to boycott you Arizona, you are likely better off for it.

Parts of Los Angeles proper, is really going down hill fast. Only about 35% of the residents of LA even pay taxes, and the Commies here have time worried about Arizona Laws, shesh. They are running off businesses at an alarming rate, the LAUSD school system is a complete mess.

Kjeil on May 12, 2010 at 6:32 PM

There will be a call for millions of Aztlanians to move to Arizona weeks before election day and they will take over all aspects of the Arizona government. They just need to be registered 29 days before election day, and then they can probably fill out an absentee ballot and head back to their real homes.

Arizona better protect itself from this possibility ahead of time. You better believe that “The Race” will go to any extreme for their Aztlan agenda.

Buddahpundit on May 12, 2010 at 6:33 PM

Great idea macncheez!

According to page 148-149 of Do As I Say (Not As I Do): Profiles in Liberal Hypocrisy by Peter Schweizer copyright 2005:

“The Pelosi’s sell their grapes to the non-union wineries Liparita Cellars and Roche.”

The Pelosi’s “recently sold another eight-acre vinyard on Skellenger Lane”, so you should keep your focus on the Pelosi vinyard on Zinfandel Lane.

“In recent years the Pelosis have also held stakes in two other wine enterprises – Ravenswood Winery and Charlore Wine Group (a consortium of smaller growers). Neither of tehse makes the UFW list as a union-label company.”

I highly recommend Peter Schweizer’s book for more information on Pelosi and many other liberals!

This is a sketchy source but interesting nonetheless.

The congresswoman’s total planted grape acreage equals 9 acres x $13,500 income per acre of highest quality grapes = $121,500 total gross grape income for the two properties.

We were also told that “her vineyards are ’postage stamp’ sized and basically ‘irrelevant’ to the industry — small, nuisance-sized parcels that at best are difficult to contract with any winery, and are in areas not known to produce quality fruit within the Oakville district. It is marginal land, which is why it was not planted historically.
“Who buys the Pelosi grape crops?” said our source, “and what wineries, and what varieties do they grow, and how much are they paid per ton of each?” said the Napa Valley resident.

If they seriously only have 9 acres of planted wine grapes they are sooo small. They probably produce a limited number of special Pelosi juice to ply foreign dignitaries and Ahnold with.
For reference, a good sized vineyard (that sources to many wineries) is over 1,300 acres.

I just managed to call both the San Diego USD Board and the SD Convention&Vistors Bureau. The folks who answered said in no uncertain terms they were feeling the heat, and all agreed with me that it’s not a good idea to get a bunch of AZ “Zonies” worked up enough to start a boycott effort.

Sometimes, pressing the case to the right people helps just as much as a histrionic gang fight council resolution.

If only our city clowncilmembers were required to reside in a one-bedroom, multi-unit apartment building in Pacoima.

Total immersion living amongst their favorite Angelenos.

The Ugly American on May 12, 2010 at 6:39 PM

So true. Spending 8 miserable years living in a $500/mo house in a neighborhood in Dallas, full of immigrants, is likely what is most responsible for my hardline stance on immigration both legal and illegal.

mrsmwp on May 12, 2010 at 7:48 PM

Its going to get exiting ;-)

macncheez on May 12, 2010 at 7:44 PM

Woot! Good find. They also own CordeValle Golf Club and Resort.

NTWR on May 12, 2010 at 7:49 PM

if all AZ folks do not go to Disneyland believe me it will reverse this ruling, the mouse house will lean on the idjit galloops on the city council

ginaswo on May 12, 2010 at 6:34 PM

To be most effective, you need to email Disney, the hotel, any restaurants you may have eaten at, any places you would normally spend money and let them know that you will not be coming. Just a calm, respectful email citing the facts. If enough people do that it could make a difference.

mrsmwp on May 12, 2010 at 7:51 PM

It’s not so bad when you’re boycotted by financially broken states. It’s like the village panhandler saying that he’s not gonna give you anymore money.

whiskeytango on May 12, 2010 at 7:58 PM

After our trip to Montana this summer…

… time for little 7% to experience the Grand Canyon first hand!

Seven Percent Solution on May 12, 2010 at 6:29 PM

If you can swing it, stop over at Arches, Canyonlands and a whole lot of other stuff around Moab in SE Utah. It’s great motorcycle touring country. Well worth 7% of your time!

karl9000 on May 12, 2010 at 8:00 PM

Arizona should set up a blockade on I-40 to stop all trucks carrying silicon and botox from entering California. Los Angeles would be in flames inside a week.

AaronGuzman on May 12, 2010 at 8:01 PM

If LA goes to be Mexican territory again doesn’t the Mexican government now responsible for all the social cares for LA? No, need for Washington to support this if its a Mexican city by reconquista so let the LA city council folks to petition Mexico City for its federales pesos in the future. Then Arizona can cut off the water electricity etc.

garydt on May 12, 2010 at 8:01 PM

from the LATimes piece:

Hahn, a candidate for Lieutenant Governor, also was asked about the Lakers upcoming NBA playoff series with Arizona. Games No. 3 and 4 are scheduled in Phoenix.

“We’re hoping the Lakers take two games in Arizona for the sweep,” Hahn told NBCLA. “If you go, we’re hoping you take your own snacks and won’t buy things in Arizona.”

dont worry we are boycotting Los Suns too LA, you can have them, we will take all out tax dollars back that subsidize them tho’ first mkay? same for MLB if they try any shenanigans with all star game, we AZ taxpayers pay for the damned ballpark and the extortionate ticket prices

ginaswo on May 12, 2010 at 8:05 PM

At least San Diego has the good sense not to try this phony little gesture.

NTWR on May 12, 2010 at 7:49 PM

Its certainly no Cayote Creek !!!
And the kicker about CordeValle

But then the Planning Commission took at look to see if the guidelines had been followed. First of all, only about a dozen non-members had been actually able to play on the course, a far cry from 60%. CordeValle had also set up obvious anti-public rules, such as requiring people to call seventy-two hours in advance and pay close to $300 for 18 holes. Upon investigation, the Commission learned that nonmembers would be told that the club was “full” and turned away even when the club was relatively empty. There were a series of public hearings on the matter and it was concluded that Lion’s Gate was in clear violation of the agreement they had made[45].

During the hearings, it was learned that Lion’s Gate had also ignored many of the environmental regulations they were responsible for. The ponds that they needed to make in order to preserve two species of lizard and turtle were not built. And only one mandatory annual environmental report had been submitted in seven years[46]. In 2004, a county report complained that improperly abandoned wells and urban pollutants from the resort were causing water quality degradation in the area. [47]

In 2003, the Pelosis and the development partnership finally hired some lobbyists and put a few government employees on the pay role. This caused the commission to cave and give up their fraud investigation as long as the course agreed to host a charity golf tournament for children.[48]

Whatever happened to protecting Mother Earth and redistribution of wealth to poor folks ?

macncheez on May 12, 2010 at 8:09 PM

So Arizona can ship all the illegals that they find to LA. Cool.

trapeze on May 12, 2010 at 6:31 PM

Don’t worry; they’ll “self-deport”…

AZ: consider building “Inspection Stations” on your side of the border with California (I-8, I-10, I-40)… Slow the traffic down… Send a message…

Khun Joe on May 12, 2010 at 8:10 PM

Personally…, I’d read being boycotted by LA as equal to an AIDS-infected, transvestite prostitute walking up to my vehicle and telling me he doesn’t want to have sex with me. Win-win…!

Rugged Individual on May 12, 2010 at 8:13 PM

Los Angeles would be in flames sagging in side a week.

hehehe

macncheez on May 12, 2010 at 8:14 PM

I now do not conduct any business with California based companies, unless they are in the firearms industry. Those companies I seek, as long as their pricing is in line.
No, I do not live in Arizona, but if real estate prices ever come back, I’ll put Arizona on my list, Wyoming is still at the top.

I look at California like Greece, or Spain, they are on the brink, and they can only blame themselves, though they don’t, there is always a convenient scapegoat. Bottom line, live within your means, we have to!

Glimmers of hope:
Arizona’s efforts to have a secure border;
Arizona’s elimination of courses that teach group hate, group victimization, and group entitlements;
An Alabama politician wanting driver’s license exams to be in English only.
The People are beginning to stir and to rise up against the ruling elites.

GaltBlvnAtty on May 12, 2010 at 8:20 PM

Does the L.A. City Council understand that a significant portion of their power comes from the Palo Verde nuclear facility west of Phoenix? If they really want to boycott Arizona they will be sitting in the dark with no a/c.

(apologies if this has already been stated, I’m coming in late to the discussion)

mad scientist on May 12, 2010 at 8:25 PM

Seven Percent Solution on May 12, 2010 at 8:33 PM

Lost in all the demagoguery and race baiting over the Arizona law, is that Prince William County in Virginia (DC suburb), enacted a nearly identical resolution in early 2007.

By mid-2008, the crime rate dropped 22% in the county. Murders dropped by 44%. Murders by illegal aliens dropped to zero in 2008. County schools reported a mid-year drop in ESOL enrollments that saved taxpayers at least $6 million annually.

The outrage over Arizona is based on a false predicate. Their law has already been proven effective elsewhere. And it’s also proven that the “profiling” hysteria is just that…hysteria.

dugan on May 12, 2010 at 8:33 PM

The folks who answered said in no uncertain terms they were feeling the heat, and all agreed with me that it’s not a good idea to get a bunch of AZ “Zonies” worked up enough to start a boycott effort.

Well thanks for putting up a fight, I may be listening to too much lame stream media. And thanks for calling me a “Zonie” I can tast that cold beer at Dicks last Resort right now…LOL

Badbrucskie on May 12, 2010 at 8:34 PM

The western conference finals between L.A. and “Los Suns” start Monday night. Whom to root for?

A meteor?

BallisticBob on May 12, 2010 at 8:35 PM

Great idea, L.A. idiots.

Celebrate diversity by promoting lawlessness!

Nobody should have to obey any laws they don’t like!

All foreigners are entitled to live in the U.S. and the legal citizens of the U.S. have no right to try and screen immigrants and ask them intrusive, invasive questions, such as if they’re able to support themselves, or if they have criminal records, or if they have any communicable diseases, or if they plan to kill Americans or try to overthrow our government, etc. Only Nazis ask immigrants questions like that! U.S. citizenship is a basic human right of every person on the planet! Laws and borders are racist!

AZCoyote on May 12, 2010 at 8:36 PM

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa already has said he would approve the boycott.

This asshat is one of theeeeeeee biggest d-bags walking the face of the Earth.
