It’s on: L.A. city council votes to boycott Arizona over immigration law
posted at 5:25 pm on May 12, 2010 by Allahpundit
This is even sweeter than San Francisco’s mini-boycott, thanks to L.A.’s growing reputation as a city destroyed by leftist orthodoxy. There are a million jokes that could be made but I’ll stick with this one from Arizona resident Exurban Jon: “They can only pay us in IOUs anyway.”
Los Angeles on Wednesday became the largest city yet to boycott Arizona over its tough new law targeting illegal immigration in a move that likely will affect some $8 million in contracts with the state.
The City Council voted 13-1 to bar Los Angeles from conducting business with Arizona unless the law is repealed. The vote followed an emotional council discussion during which many members noted that their ancestors were U.S. immigrants.
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa already has said he would approve the boycott.
“Los Angeles the second-largest city in this country, an immigrant city, an international city. It needs to have its voice heard,’’ Councilman Ed Reyes said, according to the Los Angeles Times. “As an American, I cannot go to Arizona today without a passport. If I come across an officer who’s having a bad day and feels that the picture on my ID is not me, I can be … deported, no questions asked. That is not American.”
Contracts between Arizona and the city’s power department are unaffected, unless of course Arizona wants to play hardball and do a little boycotting of its own. Said Jan Brewer in reply, capturing the absurdity of the situation: “I find it really interesting that we have people out there that are attempting a boycott in favor of illegal actions in Arizona. That to me is just unbelievable.” Indeed, especially since there are legal challenges aplenty in the works, including one potentially from the Justice Department. If the law holds up in court, will L.A. rescind the boycott? Or will the acute constitutional judgment of slackjawed imbeciles like Ed Reyes, who very obviously hasn’t read the statute, carry the day? Note to Ed: There’s nothing in there requiring citizens to carry a passport or even a driver’s license, although if you’re stopped and do happen to have your license on you, that’ll end any police suspicions about illegality. And I’m reasonably certain that the protocol for dealing with suspected illegals isn’t (a) arrest, (b) immediate police ride to the border, (c) push over the fence. From what I understand, cops have computers and databases and, oh, all kinds of stuff to check people’s identity before forcibly removing them from the country. If ever you wondered how L.A. came to be in the state it’s in, look no further than the fact that this demagogic dope is one of the most powerful people in it.
As for L.A. possibly galvanizing a national backlash to the law, think again. New from Pew:
The partisan split on overall approval: 82 percent Republican, 64 percent independent, and 45 percent Democratic, although interestingly there’s majority support among Dems for each individual element polled. We’re all “Nazis” now, my friends. Exit question: The western conference finals between L.A. and “Los Suns” start Monday night. Whom to root for?

So much misinformation. So much demagoguery. So much fomenting of hysteria. So much resistance to rational thought and to the willingness to actually READ the text of this very reasonable Arizona law.
An entirely ridiculous deed by the LA City Council.

When cities like SF and LA etc started declaring themselves ” sanctury cities” in violation of the federal law, no one had a problem with them openly giving finger to the fed law.
AZ does not want to be a sanctuary and wants to follow the fed law , and all hell breaks loose
Up is down, hot is cold..

All the boycotts and cancelled conventions in Arizona will only hit the hospitality industries like hotels and restaurants the hardest…
… I wonder who works in those industries the most?
Oh, wait!
So the boycotts are going to hit Latinos the hardest…?
… No wonder

I am sure someone has said this but I bet Arizonans are quite happy about not having more Californians invade from the West. They did quite a number on the real estate there is my guess. They probably were voting just like they did in CA which for the majority of them probably meant voting in the same entitlements they voted for in CA. I have not been to CA in 20 years I am guessing, I can go another 20 I am sure.

Finally, the answer to “Why Johnny Can’t Read”: It’s not that he can’t, he refuses to!
I think most protesters have not read the entire bill, but I don’t think they’d change their minds even if they did. The underlying message from the protests is: they want completely open borders on our side of the frontier with no laws or rules for entry. It is truly amazing that such an outlandish set of demands with no basis in reality or any hint of common sense has anyone even considering them.
n0doz on May 12, 2010 at 9:18 PM
The Democrats are playing this one for keeps. Perhaps Limbaugh is closer to being right on this than anyone when he claims that the Democrats need the votes from these people and closing the borders could cause them to lose an election.
I don’t recall, in my lifetime, any state being boycotted, because of a law they passed, before the law went into existence and it’s effects were actually felt. There has to be more to this than Arizona’s law.

Just got off the phone with my parents who live in Redlands, Ca… Huge buzz going on in that area (big Laker mania area)about the Los Angeles boycott of Az. and also the SF boycott. My Mom tells me that the people in So, Ca. are pissed off big time at the Mexican mayor of LA for being so damn stupid. Everybody’s talking about the water and power that comes from Az. and without this vital energy, the prices will triple or worse. These creatures from hell can’t see beyond their noses.
Once again, let’s take a look at the absolute evil Ca. has shoveled upon this country: Pelosi, Boxer, Waxman, Feinstein, Waters, Brown…
Enough said.

Ummm, are you being sarcastic? Of coarse there’s more going on than the Az. law. This is nothing other than a political game the Progressive’s are playing. Will they benefit from this sham of a scam? Doesn’t look like it right now with 70% of the country firmly behind the Az. law and demanding that their own state follow suit. This is not going to end well for California, the Progressive’s, nor will it end well for Mexicans.

My wife and I just flew to LA this past weekend for our grand-daughter’s graduation from college in Costa Mesa. LA is a cess-pool. These “people of color” on the LA council have obviously not assimilated into the greatest country God ever put on this earth for the purpose of providing freedom for human beings. They are willfully blind to the degradation their race has caused in this country by refusing to assimilate. A pox on them and their offspring.
wepeople on May 12, 2010 at 9:54 PM
And by the way, isn’t the correct word “embargo” instead of boycott. Having been born during Eisenhower’s 2nd term, kids used to learn stuff like that, versus what they’re obviously not learning in L.A.

BTW, how about AZ extending the boycott, and cutting off water to Calif.? That’s about 4.4 million acre feet of water (1,433,744,400,000 gallons), usually about 1 million more (1,759,595,400,000 gallons) since Colorado seldom uses their allotment.

Bullshit. “Races” don’t cause things. “Races” are just arbitrary ways for liberal collectivists to destroy the notion of individuality. Some Latinos have refused to assimilate, but many others have not. There is no room in this country or the conservative movement for collectivism.

Fed45 on May 13, 2010 at 1:06 AM
Hey!How ’bout that!!!! Now, if only that were relevant. Alas, all the Federal immigration laws require is that you be a legal resident. And all the Arizona law requires is that you show an ID that indicates you are here legally. And I believe that in all 50 states you have to prove you are a legal resident to get at Driver’s license. You are aware there are plenty of people that are in this country legally that are not citizens, right?
Fed45 on May 13, 2010 at 1:12 AM
Kuhn Joe, there is a US Border Patrol checkpoint on I-8 on the AZ side, just east of Yuma. I think I-10 also has a checkstation but don’t know about I-40. It’s odd that we don’t hear any outrage about these checkstations.

Granny,
My apologies; I was referring to the State of California Inspection Stations (“Do you have any fruits or vegetables?”) that one must pass through prior to entry into the Golden State. The Copper State could build some on THEIR side of the border in order to:
- Employ more Arizona construction workers by building several new inspection stations
- Employ more Arizonans 24/7
- Slow down California traffic INTO Arizona by asking questions like, “Do you have any fresh fruit or plants? Great! No problem!” or “Have you been to Los Angeles or San Francisco lately? We are randomly searching vehicles coming from sanctuary cities.”
Just a way for Arizona to let California know that two can play “that game”…
The US Border Patrol “check points” have been a joke for a LONG time…
Khun Joe on May 13, 2010 at 3:57 AM
Firstly, If I were the Governor of Arizona, I would get on TV and make a public service announcement that all illegals will be aided in moving to Los Angeles, transportation and “walking around money” provided by Arizonans. Since LA seems to be so paternal, let them provide what Arizona cannot. This is fiscally better than supporting them.
Secondly, Comrade Obamakov has really proved himself to be a very poor leader. One speech from TOTUS could quell all of the tension by at least lying about doing something and bringing said level of tension down. I remember when Reagan went on TV, the stock market always did really well for a few days after. The man inspired confidence. With Comrade Obamakov, I’m afraid to invest in a Starbucks Coffee. Not the stock, just a cup of coffee…I still can’t figure out if Obamakov is a naive rank amateur, or if he’s really the ultimate ideologue who fiddles while America burns? What are the odds he’s both?

McCain was on Hannity last night, and as much as I despise the man he made a good point: boycotts of Arizona’s hotel and hospitality industry will hurt one group of people the most: Hispanics.
Greta had some tool from the LA City Council on and she was bragging about how the cops in LA are not allowed to ask about citizenship status under any circumstance. Like that’s a great thing. Greta’s not the greatest interviewer in the world and she was especially bad with that one. She never challenged the woman but kept repeating how poorly written the Arizona law was. Ugh.
Jaynie59 on May 13, 2010 at 7:52 AM
I suspect that LA is interfering in federal interstate commerce business and are opening themselves up to massive legal remuneration to AZ. (To be paid in pesos of course -since CA is broke, only the illegals have any money)
I’d love to see the Gov of AZ remind them of this with a legal letter.

It is obvious that liberalism is a mental disorder. Where in economics does the bankrupt party boycott the provider by withholding IOUs that they cannot pay? Delusional liberals cannot seem to grasp the concept of reality. The boycott has ramifications of being illegal and Arizona should rock their boat to determine if the law is being broken.

fastestslug on May 13, 2010 at 10:27 AM
It is more than a little bizarre. It’s creepy.
fastestslug on May 13, 2010 at 10:43 AM
There is no such thing as ‘ethnic studies’. It was fabricated by the left to create incubators for hatred of western civ. Ethnic studies invariably educates the students about the glories of marxism and foments rebellion and revolution.
These studies serve no purpose. Besides, there we already classes that truly covered ‘ethnic studies’, they were found in the course catalog under ‘History’.
Inanemergencydial on May 13, 2010 at 10:46 AM
AZ is not banning all ethnic studies, just one particular type: those which promote racism (by claiming that one race or ethnicity is superior to others) and/or advocate the overthrow of the U.S. government.
This law was made necessary by a militant bunch of La Raza/Reconquista types in the Tucson public schools, who have for years now been teaching public school kids that hispanics (Mexicans, in particular) are superior to “gringos” and blacks, that gringos stole the U.S. southwest from Mexico, that U.S. borders, laws, etc., are illegitimate and should not be respected, that Mexicans in the U.S. should actively work to subvert the U.S. government and return the “stolen” areas of the U.S. to Mexican control, etc.
It’s sad that we even need a law like this, but unfortunately the nuts running the Tucson public schools are the hispanic equivalent of the KKK. They are pushing a virulent form of racism and revisionist “history” to impressionable public school children (many of whom are Mexicans), and they had to be stopped.

L.A. won’t do business with the state of Arizona? Fine. There are plenty of unemployed people elsewhere who are willing to contract with AZ. L.A. will have to find 8M$ elsewhere. Maybe by raising taxes on illegals.
Ed’s statement is just pandering to the L.A. Mexicans (legal or illegal) who don’t like the spirit of the law, regardless of what’s in it. It’ll make him very popular and will help him retain his job in the city.
Who cares about what he says?
AlexB on May 13, 2010 at 11:04 AM
La Raza (The Race) created an ethnic studies program within the Tucson Unified School district that teaches, without apology, that the Hispanic race should ‘stick together’ based on the oppression imposed on it by the White race. The new law makes it illegal to teach courses where race solidarity is encouraged, and where racial grievences are aired and racial seperatism is encouraged.

L.A City Council are Jackasses.
“Who are the Los Angeles City Council, and especially Councilwoman Janice Hahn trying to fool? The dirty little secret they don’t want to talk about is the fact that for over twenty years, the L.A.P.D. and USDOJ were fully aware of the document forgers operating within the shadows of City Hall, MacArthur Park, and the Federal Building in down town L.A.. These skilled craftsmen were churning out forged California drivers licenses, birth certificates and Social Security cards right before their very eyes, ears and noses. L.A. City Government and the feds knew all about the criminality, yet did nothing…in fact the L.A. City Council passed Special Order #40 prohibiting police from questioning illegal alien status. Local TV stations made hidden video documentaries of the criminal forging activities, showed them on TV, and turned the films over to local authorities and the feds, where they promptly were DOA.
So L.A. City, and the feds can’t knowingly aid and abet in a crime…do nothing, then chastise or hypocritically boycott a state like Arizona for being responsible and upholding the rule of law!”
Want proof: Just search: “L.A. City and MacArthur Park forgeries.”
