Obamateurism of the Day
posted at 8:05 am on May 11, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
Over the weekend, Barack Obama bravely tackled the greatest threat to America. No, it wasn’t terrorism, drugs, or even illiteracy. Obama told a graduating university class that the technology that they have known most of their lives would be the end of American civilization:
“You’re coming of age in a 24/7 media environment that bombards us with all kinds of content and exposes us to all kinds of arguments, some of which don’t always rank all that high on the truth meter,” Obama said at Hampton University, Virginia.
“With iPods and iPads and Xboxes and PlayStations, — none of which I know how to work — information becomes a distraction, a diversion, a form of entertainment, rather than a tool of empowerment, rather than the means of emancipation,” Obama said.
He bemoaned the fact that “some of the craziest claims can quickly claim traction,” in the clamor of certain blogs and talk radio outlets.
“All of this is not only putting new pressures on you, it is putting new pressures on our country and on our democracy.”
Oh, those crazy kids and their X-boxes and Playstations! Which probably included just about everyone at the Hampton University commencement, come to think of it. The iPod has been around for nine years, but the game systems have been around for a generation, and have been connected to the Internet for over a decade. It would be like having Jimmy Carter warn in 1980 about the evils of transistor radios and album-oriented rock on FM stations.
How did the coolest, hippest President in American history wind up sounding like Uncle Fudd when the neighbor kids play their music a little too loud on a Friday night? And how must have that sounded to a group of college students who managed to live through the cultural scourge of Nintendo and the Internet and, er … graduate from college?
Besides, as Nick Rizzuto points out, it’s not as if Obama himself eschews the iPod. He gave one to Queen Elizabeth last year, if you’ll recall — preloaded with MP3 files of his own speeches.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

This from the campaign that nabbed email addresses for millions and sought to have a twitter army at his disposal for his election. He asked them to take a day off (link), to help elect him, and sought to steer the behaviors of people through electronic devices.

Everything that comes out of this guy’s mouth is built on a profound lie: less information and the control of information will set you free. The unreality of his view is breathtaking. The extent of this kind of aberrant behavior by a United States President is unknown to the American People.

I am beginning to see a pattern here. It seems Obama is somehow afraid the truth may see the light of day, and he does not like it one bit.
Johnnyreb on May 11, 2010 at 8:34 AM
He didn’t entirely make these comments out of his nuttiness; to the contrary, it’s another effort by Obama to emphasize his Crew’s theme, and that is to make suppressing and even eradicating *certain information* a thing of “fun” for “youth” so they’ll grow up into well disciplined Communist workers.
Bob Bauer, Anita Dunn, and the handy Elena Kagan…take a look at their views (and histories) on the issue of information flow, and our Freedom of Speech. Also how they seem to target the Constitution as a threatening thing in their “feelings” (or purpose) that *certain information* should just disappear and if it doesn’t, the sources should be punished.
Look into it…Obama’s just being a handy squirrel there in beating the drum all day on this one theme, as also the Kagan nomination.

While offering his indispensible and sage advice to the new graduates, the precedent revealed the motto of his administration.
ontherocks on May 11, 2010 at 8:37 AM
This is but another example of “It’s all about me.” If he had the intention of inspiring graduates, it was certainly lost in the racial politics of vocabulary choices of “emancipation” and “empowerment.” Hampton University is an Historically Black College so when he used that language and extolled the example of civil rights leader Dorothy Height, he was appealing to the divisive racial politics of recent decades and reminding black graduates that the civil rights movement was still a force for power politics.
.
Hey Øbummer, president of all the people, did you have any examples of inspirational white people of recent history in your speech or don’t you know of any?

Meanwhile, in the inner cities, boys are bouncing balls through their legs, slamming balls down through a net…and dropping out of school at about a 40% rate.
And he is worried about kids with iPods, who more then likely are on their way to college…in fact are sitting right in front of him.
I think perpetuating a single parent family, encouraging drop out, promoting obscene music, is a bigger danger then those Playstations he so fears…
right2bright on May 11, 2010 at 8:39 AM
Glenn Beck had a lot to say about this yesterday. It all boils down to this. Obama and the FCC want to control speech by regulating the internet, making it a public utility. Obama has to start brainwashing the masses into believing all this information is too much for them to process.

This is another attempt by Obama to find a potent formula for ongoing deception, as a thief tries door after door to find the unlocked and unguarded door. If only he can find the right words, the right venue, the right “thesis” to convince the masses that his words bear truth, that his words matter.
WordsMatter on May 11, 2010 at 8:47 AM
What exactly is the pressure this is putting on our country? Freedom of Speech has always allowed for “some of the craziest claims can quickly claim traction.” Today it is easier to knock those claims down. I shall you Dan Rather “not deal in facts” as an example. If anything it is the blogs that try to keep the lame stream media honest on the facts. If the pressure is that it is harder for the White House to control the message, then keep up the pressure.

The dissing of IPODs and XBoxes by the Hipster-in-Chief are getting all the attention, but we really should be far more concerned with his attempts to use college graduates with liberal arts educations as pawns in his attempts to silence dissent.
Last week we were told that referring to him as a “Socialist” could provoke violent, seditious behavior. Now we’re told that technology threatens democracy. All that’s missing is a parrot on his shoulder.
By the way, I betcha his good fried and ideological twin Cass Sunstein, author of “Democracy and the Problem of Free Speech” helped write both speeches.

Note that it is not important that information be true. It is important that information be “a tool of empowerment” or “a means of emancipation”.
Here Zero is giving away the game. Empowerment and emancipation are code words for “advancing the progressive agenda”. He is not interested in access to information for the truth’s sake, but only for the purposes of his own political ends.
The only type of information that should be permitted is approved propaganda. Talk radio is not “empowering”. The right-wing blogs on the internet do not promote “emancipation”, therefore they must be eliminated
