Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on May 7, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Does Barack Obama read bills before he criticizes them? Heck, Obama doesn’t even read bills when he supports them, as ObamaCare proved. But it’s more than a little embarrassing that Obama continues to criticize the Arizona immigration enforcement law over provisions it doesn’t contain and issues that have already been resolved. Byron York explains:

At a Cinco de Mayo reception at the White House Wednesday evening, President Obama launched another attack on Arizona’s new immigration law. “We can’t start singling out people because of who they look like, or how they talk, or how they dress,” the president told the crowd. As he had in earlier criticisms of the law, Obama ignored the law’s specific stipulation that any check on a person’s immigration status can only come after a “lawful stop, detention or arrest” when a person is suspected of breaking some law — that is, as Arizona lawmakers explained in a footnote to the bill, it must come “during the enforcement of any other law or ordinance of a county, city or town or this state.”

The original bill specified “lawful contact” as the point where law-enforcement officials could check on residency status, a legal term that never meant “whenever police felt like it.” When complaints piled up that this language was too vague, the Arizona legislature amended it as York notes above. Police can only check residency status when they have probable cause to detain someone on another issue. And as York also notes, the law clearly states that valid forms of state-issued ID puts any probe of residency states to rest immediately.

That didn’t keep Obama from doubling down on Cinco de Mayo:

Make no mistake, our immigration system is broken. And after so many years in which Washington has failed to meet its responsibilities, Americans are right to be frustrated, including folks along border states. But the answer isn’t to undermine fundamental principles that define us as a nation. We can’t start singling out people because of who they look like, or how they talk, or how they dress.

He’s right. Fortunately, the law in Arizona doesn’t do any of those things, and no one ever suggested it had anything to do with the way people dress at all — which Obama would know if he actually read the law he was criticizing. But there is a high school in Morgan Hill that probably could use that lecture after their own observance of Cinco de Mayo. Can we count on Obama to scold the Live Oak High School administration on the civil rights of dress codes?

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

I notice a lot of Obamateurisms aren’t really examples of how much he is an amateur. Many, if not most of them are examples of what a manipulative liar he is.

But the answer isn’t to undermine fundamental principles that define us as a nation

right, like enforcing the laws that we have and not denigrating the redundant laws that are passed when the fed fails to do what they’re supposed to do ( and states are subsequently forced to take care of it themselves)…

At some point, someone needs to point out that he has been in charge with an overwhelming Democrat majority for 15 months.

And on this issue in particular, the Democrats controlled Congress for two years with another president who desired a path to citizenship.

CRISIS: Will race relations get better?

OBAMA: Not in the short term. We’re moving out of a period of American preeminence on the world economic stage. Global competition means increasing economic uncertainty for the majority of Americans, black and white. Unfortunately, politicians in this country find it convenient to define these problems in racial terms — affirmative action, immigration and so on. It’s always easier to organize people around tribe than around principle.

This is the conundrum for Obama. The job news was actually good. 230,000 private sector jobs were added, but that led more people to resume looking for work which in turn drove up the unemployment rate.

Barrack Obama and the Democrat Party are the largest group of enemies that the United States has on this planet.
They are facilitating sedition, illegal immigration, voter fraud, media corruption, political bribery, extortion, payola, graft, fomenting racial animosity, and complete discontent with the American citizen.
Their total lack of honesty and incompetence is a greater threat to the security of the United States than Al Qaeda. Their damage is accumulating on a daily basis, and has surpassed anything that has been accomplished by terrorism on U.S. soil.
The American People should indict every last one of them and send them to prison.

looks like the other side of the double edged sword that would naturally occur if these jackasses didn’t manipulate the job numbers to arrive at a percentage below 10% the last couple of months. Now they’re stuck with it. If they keep changing the bottom line of number unemployed and seeking/total jobs available, then they are going to keep running into these problems.

either way, the employment outlook is grim, it looks that way, it is measured that way, and it is going to continue that way until stuff changes.

ted c on May 7, 2010 at 8:50 AM

If the private sector keeps adding 230,000 jobs a month, we’ll at least not be any worse off in terms of unemployment. But that’s a tall order with Obamacare and the upcoming tax increases looming. And that’s not even factoring in the mess in Europe.

Doughboy on May 7, 2010 at 8:52 AM

Unless they dress as though they support America.

drjohn on May 7, 2010 at 8:17 AM

Beat me to it. Wear the flag of another country? Fine. Wear the American flag on the anniversary of a minor battle of another country’s victory, that the US supported, and suddenly you are the problem.

But it’s more than a little embarrassing that Obama continues to criticize the Arizona immigration enforcement law over provisions it doesn’t contain and issues that have already been resolved.

Once again, we need look no further than Joseph Goebbels:

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”

“We can’t start singling out people because of who they look like, or how they talk or how they dress. We can’t turn law abiding American citizens and law abiding immigrants into subjects of suspicion and abuse. We can’t divide the American people that way. That’s not the answer, that’s not who we are as the United State of America.”

Note that law abiding immigrants would be carrying their documentation because… well… that’s the law. So to me, it sounds like boy king just made illegals “Americans” which of course they are NOT.

Real unemployment is approximately 16% when all crucial fields are included in the formula. Obama and his Progressive policies are hurting all Americans at every level of pay, in every field with the lone exception of government employment. The college kids are having one hell of a time finding work, as most of the jobs that were once available to these kids are now taken by adults.

The pain has spread to every state in our Republic. Tourism is way down. Confidence is at historic lows. Jeez, it’s survival time for all of us.

My grandparents arrived in this country early in the last century. They went through the horrors of Ellis Island and made it into this country legally. They became American citizens and NEVER lost their love for their home country.

When the invaders (to use the historic reference) from the south begin to follow American laws and not enter this country illegally, then maybe, just maybe this country will welcome them.

Until then, Barry the Zero can go pound sand.

“Broken” as in it doesn’t allow immediate legal entry to every foreigner who wants in? Because U.S. citizenship and/or legal residency is the “right” of every foreigner who wants it?

Baloney. What’s “broken” isn’t our immigration system. What’s “broken” is our border security and our visa enforcement system. And we won’t “repair” our border security or our visa system by rewarding tens of millions of illegal aliens with amnesty for deliberately violating our immigration laws.
