Hey, who’s up for another story about high school students fighting over flags?

I can’t find any more details online than what’s here, but since people are e-mailing about it, let’s do it. Your turn, Napa Valley.

Vintage High School students were suspended for fighting and burning a Mexican national flag during incidents on campus Wednesday, school Principal Craig Lewis said.

At 3 p.m., four female students were involved in a fight related to the burning of a flag, according to Napa police.

Thursday, school administrators found out the burned flag had been discarded on the school campus. They checked trash cans and found a partially burned Mexican national flag, police said.

If anyone knows more about this, send me the link. The only one of the three outrageously outrageous kids-and-flags stories in the news that really bugs me is this one, just because in its own small way it replicates the logic of the Comedy Central/Mohammed fiasco. I had a long argument with a friend about that via e-mail today. She insisted that, yes, in an ideal world, it’d be harmless to wear an American flag shirt to school on Cinco de Mayo in the U.S., but we don’t live in a perfect world, do we? Reality is what it is and the kids should have known it; as it is, they’re guilty of a provocation. Which I’m happy to accept as true. Let’s take it as given that they wore the shirts in protest of Cinco de Mayo, as a statement of support for cultural assimilation, and that they did it knowing it would piss off some Mexican-American kids. So what? If “reality is what it is” then Comedy Central’s right to keep Mohammed off the air. Ain’t nothing more “real” than an angry jihadist, as Theo Van Gogh would tell you if he could.

But once you make that move, rewarding illiberal reactions to free expression by silencing it, you’re in Appeasementland. The difficulty here, I think, is in recognizing that not all provocations are necessarily wrong. Wrongness depends on what principle the provocation was meant to defend. Van Gogh and Ayaan Hirsi Ali were surely guilty of provocation when they created “Submission,” but it was in service to a liberal value — i.e. defending women from abuses under Islam. So too with the kids in American-flag tees: They’re making a point about integration and the melting pot, a classic liberal value (if not, perhaps, a “progressive” one). If that bothers you as an American — or, in the parlance of constitutional law, if you’re an American student who finds that “disruptive” — then you’re the one with the problem. Adjust your attitude accordingly.

Incidentally, via Breitbart, here’s audio of Laura Ingraham discussing the day’s other outrageous outrage with the mother of that kid who took down the Mexican flag. Apparently the school thinks he owes some sort of damages or something. Oh, and here’s yet another national poll showing support in excess of 60 percent for Arizona’s new law. What can I say, amnesty shills? Realty is what it is.

I would think that those who are sincere about coming here and whom we are told want to become Americans would celebrate things like the flag clothing. Sure they can be offended by the burning of the flag by less than a handful of people but what does it really mean. I see far more problems at the link noted above where you have hundreds of haters .

That even the kids at schools are becoming so tired of the BS they are trying to show their anger in any manner but not thinging things through. Wearing a T-shirt, taking a flag and doing whatever with it, etc. They LEARNED this from liberals who did the same thing they are doing now. Any thought that maybe at least some of the kids that wore a tee-shirt with an American flag on it because that shirt was the one that was clean that day? Or it was next in their regular rotation? Or they have a lot of clothes with American flags on them? Or are we all assuming that because they wore American flags on 5/5/10 that all of them were staging a non-violent passive-aggressive protest that day?

I agree with you. You can be Mexican, you can be American. You can’t be both. I just wish some people would get that through their thick heads.

And if they don’t like it here, they can go somewhere else. This country was established on the principles of freedom, freedom enshrined and protected by law. If they don’t like it, fine, but we don’t like it either when they try to trample our laws and abrogate our freedoms in the process.

Then they get all upset when a conflict breaks out.

The only thing I’ll say when that happens is ‘you asked for it buddy. You got it.’

As a native Houstonian who has seen this city turn into a literal barrio, I had enough a long time ago. I had enough when an illegal hit my car and my insurance company had to pick up the cost while the criminal only got a ticket. I had enough when I closed on a house last week so I could move to Ft. As I said before, I don’t condone burning ANYONE’S flag, but I believe these ‘students’ should be more respectful to YOU and all those who came before you to fly the AMERICAN flag when they are in this country.

Thanks. That took me down a good 10 degrees. I just want people to take the situations individually; like we all take people. Being thrown out of school for wearing the Amercian flag is not displaying a foreign flag -with permission- which is not burning a flag with the obvious intent to incite.

You are completely missing the point, and intentionally doing so to make a dishonest case. And I have to admit the threat of physical violence is a nice touch. All sound logical arguments need to be backed up with force for sure.

Reverse the actions and countries as I asked in my last post and the complete idiocy and disrespect shown by those of “Mexican descent” is painfully obvious.

This is what I said to a friend on the issue:

I am heated about this, … it offends me because I know a lot of real immigrants that come to this country to become US Citizens and just want to be a part of this great country. They are great people, good families, and help to make this country better.

So I get mad when I see stories like this, where a small number of people demand that their home country/flag/history be more important and treated as superior HERE in the USA because it stains the image of true immigrants.

I love learning about other cultures, enjoying the traditions and foods, and seeing people rejoice in their families histories. And here in the USA everyone CAN celebrate whatever they want, without demanding that everyone else subvert their own history/culture/religion/etc.

There is a difference between immigration and non-military invasion. Demanding the subjugation of a countries culture to one outside of its borders is the latter, not the former.

Your point is completely valid. What I want is to differentiate amongst the cases, though. The kids thrown out for wearing flag shirts on Cinco de Mayo -that’s completely wrong-headed. Violent protests against enforcement of our immigration laws -that’s completely wrong. Illegal immigration – wrong completely, burning anyone’s flag, an iconic symbol that should be respected within, and amongst, nations – wrong, but perhaps necessarily allowable so that we me have gradations of legal offense.

What we don’t need to be upset about is the one day display of a foreign flag in a school by kids who requested and received permission to do so. This is not rioting in the streets and causing mayhem and destruction. What do we as a society want to teach them?

Ok, now you have me confused. Here I thought you were an idiot and a racist and yet you make logical points. If you were being sarcastic with the cracker comments I withdraw the racist remark with an apology.

No one would disagree with you on these points. But that could be because it is not what people are having issues with. People are upset that a school demanded students of US descent subjugate their love of THIS country/history/etc. because some other students in a US school wanted to celebrate a day that is a non-holiday in Mexico.

The school should have demanded that those HERE in the USA explain how they could not celebrate Cinco De Mayo due to others wearing the flag.

There is no reason they could not have done so, unless they have anti-USA nationalist issues. Having pride in ones heritage does not require insulting that of others or the country one lives in. It is a lesson they need to learn.

I completely agree with what you just said; I haven’t said anything contrary to that sentiment in this thread. What got me riled was that the tenor of this tread devolved into a group assumption that every Latino immigrant in this country is a Reconquista devotee and that every display of pride in Mexican ethnicity is meant as an affront to non-Latino Americans. Martin Luther King spoke the truth on the steps that day; each of has a responsibility to assert those values.

Nothing in my post that was deleted was in any way contrary to that, or, was a threat to any specific person here. It was, however, angry and probably juvenile. I regret that. I apologize.

The Mexican flag should not have been displayed for any reason. If the individual teachers wanted to do a little history and geographical discussion in respect of the day, that should be allowed.

But, the Mexican flag should not have been displayed. This is America, we fly the American flag on our public buildings, above all others, including those of the states.

This was an irresponsible decision by the principle.

Lastly, the anger and lashing out that we are seeing by American citizens is a result of the fact that it is WE who are suffering from this invasion. There is real empirical loss to the citizenry here because of the fact that the federal government has ignored its duty to protect our borders.

I’ve been opening irrigation up and have been battling an 18 inch pipe that supplys half of the water we use on the ranch that we manage. Luckily the weather has stayed somewhat cool and the other run-off we get is holding. I was on a tractor for 8 hours straight clearing snow and ice that is hindering natural melt. It’s a real long and convoluted mess. The Palin threads are just so predictable and silly that I lurk and occasionally smart off.

That sounds like hard work. Ice and snow! We are already doing 90 degrees. We are wandering up to Virginia in a day or two or at least that’s the rumor. The Palin threads have brought us someone new Flickering Flames or some such name. I have a strong urge to throw the comment that Mitt Romney’s hair is plastic, then run off.

It may have been more appropriate to wear Corona Beer tee-shirts instead of the Mexi-flag on the 5th of May as I have heard it has nothing to do with an authentic Mexican holiday, but was promoted by Corona to increase beer sales. Kinda like Valentines day or Mom and Dad days etc. were promoted by commercial interests to sell cards, flowers and candy.

It’s ok to burn an American flag but not a Mexican flag? Seems like the HS violated the students 1st amendment rights. These students are speaking for a lot of us that don’t like it when people from other countries come here illegally and flaunt their nationality in our faces. This is the USA. Hope their parents fight back.
