Tomorrow’s narrative today: Did Bush drive Shahzad to this?

posted at 10:16 pm on May 4, 2010 by Allahpundit

The great hope for a “violent teabaggers” news cycle fizzled out, so they’re going to have to go to Plan B. Good enough?

Igor Djuric, a broker who showed Mr. Shahzad the 1,356-square-foot home he eventually bought, said he remembered that Mr. Shahzad was quiet about himself, but was openly critical of President Bush in the aftermath of the Iraq war.

“I didn’t take it for anything, since a lot of people didn’t like Bush,” Mr. Djuric said, “but he was a little bit strong about expressing it.”

The only thing strange about Mr. Shahzad that next-door neighbor Brenda Thurman could remember was his habit of going jogging at night wearing all black. He told her he didn’t like the sunlight, she said.

That’s buried in a lo-o-ong profile of the bomber compiled by the Journal, but the AP’s already helpfully split the nugget about Bush off into its own little news story for easy linkin’. Truth be told, I think the media’s actually going to throw us a curveball on this. The Bush/Iraq scapegoat is old and busted, for the simple reason that Iraq’s been off the political radar screen for so long. Lefties are about as likely to protest the ongoing occupation there these days as they are the fact that Gitmo’s still open, which is to say, basically never. The new hotness is withdrawal from Afghanistan; they’re still peeved at The One for doubling down on that, so if Shahzad’s smart enough to cough up a rhetorical hairball about how he was driven to this by, say, the coming “aggression” against Kandahar, he’ll be in media hog heaven before he knows it.

And if he’s not smart enough, they can always segue into the easy-peasy “beware of the bigoted American backlash against Muslims” narrative. Click the image to watch RCP’s compilation of that fallback narrative coming together this afternoon. Exit quotation via Andrew Breitbart: “OHMYGOD! Thwarted Times Square bomber was anti-George W. Bush! Be on terror alert for all Bush-Bashers!”

Indeedio. You know, the violent backlash that never happened? Yeah, that backlash.

Question to those who have better memories than myself: Was there ever any violent backlash against the Irish when the IRA and their ilk were blowing sh*t up? Or any hysterical media claiming this was happening? Or is it just with these terrorists?

… is that we are on to them, their lies, their distortions, their bias, their shilling, their propaganda, their misinformation and disinformation, and their political agenda.

If we are hit again hard, it’s not only the liberal left Democrat politicians that will be held accountable, but all these ‘talking heads’ empowering our true enemies.

Seven Percent Solution on May 4, 2010 at 10:26 PM

Remind me again why it’s so difficult to chalk this up as another act of Islamic extremism? Is it that the drive-bys really did convince themselves after 8 years of Bush-bashing that he was the reason the rest of the world hated us? So admitting that their entire belief system is based on a false premise would shatter their world(kinda like Climategate)?

Doughboy on May 4, 2010 at 10:26 PM

Because, in order to chalk it up as Islamic terrorism, you have to ignore the storyline that all anti-American violence is caused by Bush hatred and accept the facts that Obama gave a speech in Cairo—and gots himself 4 terrorist incidents on the homeland as a result….that’s a bitter pill to swallow for people that are used to concocting their own little Utopia full of rainbows.

So you think the MSM is going to pin this on Obama as blowback from his Afghanistan policies?

No way, no how. Sure, they are jilted lovers and they are wounded…crying bloody tears, but they’ll never betray their Messiah in such an overt fashion. Anyway, under Obama’s watch, it’s all going to hell in a handbasket in Afghanistan anyway. He was misled by the wingnuts, you see. He’ll soon see the light and stage a precipitous pullout…he’ll come back home again.

The narrative is Bush’s cruel economic policies that drove this poor waif to desperate action. Cruel, cruel fate…directly as a result of Bush’s love of those greedy Wallstreet bankers.

That’s your narrative.

My faith in libs is restored!! I was wondering why they weren’t seeing this angle. Did they get so caught up in the hope that it was really a racist teabagger, that the old standby left leaning in the corner just didn’t seem as exciting. How could they use “Blame Bush” just like the last 8 years when they still held out hope that it would prove once and for all–along with the anti-capitalist TAX HATING kamakazi–that the tea partiers were really, really dangerous.

It was probably a bummer to realize that this was yet again a Muslim acting out against America and that they would have to drag the old standby out.

It’s funny though, if he were anti-Obama that would be bad for the conservatives (having sewn so much “hate” or the man), yet now that he hates George Bush, it’s bad for the conservatives…so it’s actually tales we lose.

The old media outlets are going to move right along just wait and see. The Shahzad story is a deadend story for them with a lot bumbling bad memories attached to it, and talking it up or down from here on out isn’t going help them anymore in the credibility department. They’re dumb, but not that dumb. What’s anticipated for the old media now is to grab onto anything promising or worthwhile in the next news cycle, make more out of it than it really is to alter the perception and draw the attention away from their previous mistakes made in what is now an “old news” cycle. The old media is in the new news business when old news is bad news for them in retrospect.

Worth gizillions in Jihadi points), send him to Pack-e-ston to train, give him scratch to come back to the You-Ess-of-Aye to find an ole’ Pathfinder to purchase, mis-remember the type of fertilizer to buy, mis-wire the devise, (damn!) forget which continent he’s on so puts in the wrong time…has no pre-arranged plane ticket (under different name/false papers), so pays cash at airport…Um, HOW MANY TIMES DID THIS CLOWN PUT OUT THE PROVERBIAL RED FLAGG??? Chewy the Lab on May 5, 2010 at 12:03 AM

The narrative is going to be a combination of things. The financial downturn, which is blamed on Bush and the wars.

I think the major story will be how the financial collapse left him homeless, penniless and “confused”. He was told of a way to make a quick buck and did it.

They will lay the blame on Bush no matter what.

Wait a second. What happened to those tapes from the Taliban — posted from a Connecticut website — telling us that this was in retaliation for the predators and drones killing poor innocent terrorists in Afghanistan? NOW.

And just for giggles, Fox reported:

“A website for alumni of Sharia College at Minhaj University in Lahore, Pakistan, listed a profile for a “Faisal Shahzad” of Pakistani descent.
According to the profile, Shahzad attended the Board of Intermediate & Secondary Education in Lahore in 1999, following by the University of the Punjab, where he concentrated on Islamic studies, Arabic and Persian. He later attended the Minhaj University in Lahore. Messages seeking comment from Minhaj University were not immediately returned.”

His wife may have links to the NYC Subway bomber, according to the same story. More giggles.

At the same time Shahzad was attending Sharia University, he was taking correspondence courses from the now-defunct Southeastern University, in Washington, D.C., according to the NY Times. He was an international kind of guy from an early age, it seems…

Before it is over the left and media will have made Shazhad a victim of the Bush administration (Shazhad’ house foreclosed on), an example of why Obama needs to push for amnesty of all illegal aliens (Shahzad was probably bummed out an illegal alien friend was in the country and may not get free healthcare or welfare) and, blame Bush again, the war in Afghanistan spilling over to Pakistan during the Bush years

albill on May 4, 2010 at 2:51 PM

albill on May 5, 2010 at 7:29 AM

Sooo, he didn’t like Bush? Now I see why the Obama State Department made him a naturalized citizen so fast! And he’s a registered Democrat? No surprise there. And, his house is in forclosure but he flies to Pakistan to train in Waziristan, then when his bomb fizzles, he pays cash for a flight to Dubai? Where’s Mr. Forclosure getting all this cash for all these plane trips? Authorities might want to check on that when they get around to it.

Yep; They’re saying ‘look at what YOU made us do’.
I feel SOOO guilty, you know!

You make the mistake of assuming he was PUSHED into this. It could very well be, that he did it willingly, as in with malice of forethought.

I see I made a mistake in my wording. I was not intending to allow for the guy to use the “being pushed” argument.

More exactly, my point is the hypocracy of Clinton and the media in their attempts to blame teapartiers for perceived attacks, while in real, actual attacks, they don’t use the same logic to point the finger at themselves. That is, if hate talk can encourage bad actions, why are they not saying the same words now?

Of course, I thought their previous logic was boneheaded and corrupt, just as I think the same for the thought that liberal rantings (or Bush, or unemployment, or hard times, or any other “compasionate” rational) “pushed” this guy to try and bomb Times Square.

Logic doesn’t work with Democrats. They only respond to visceral stimuli.

Yahoo’s headline and picture is of Shazad’s dusty/abandoned mailbox…yeah that’ll gain lots of sympathy.

Meanwhile the US doesn’t wonder what the Iraqi governments up to or if revenue from their oil is being used to sponsor terrorism….

Beautiful, OxyCon. “Sudden jihad syndrome.” Just doesn’t work as “sudden man-caused disaster syndrome.”
