Times Square bombing suspect arrested at airport; Update: Surveillance was the key

posted at 7:57 am on May 4, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

The FBI arrested the 30-year-old man who bought the Nissan Pathfinder that almost exploded in Times Square on Saturday just as he was about to leave the US.  Faisal Shahzad, who had just come back from a five-month trip to Pakistan, had intended to flee to Dubai.  Instead, his incompetence has him in federal custody:

The FBI has arrested a 30-year-old Bridgeport, Conn., man in connection with the failed attempt to set off a car bomb in New York’s Times Square, federal authorities told ABCNews.com late Monday night.

The man was identified as Faisal Shahzad, a naturalized American citizen, who had recently returned from a five-month trip to Pakistan and the city of Peshawar, a known jumping off point for al Qaeda and Taliban recruits.

Shahzad was arrested at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York City where FBI agents said he was attempting to leave the country to go to Dubai.

From Dubai, Shahzad could have disappeared anywhere in the world.  Thanks to a botched bomb design, though, the US already knew his name and have leads on his accomplices.  ABC reports that three people close to Shahzad are under investigation for any part they may have played in this plot.  And while Janet Napolitano continues to downplay the possibility that the Taliban backed this plot, evidence of overseas involvement continues to surface:

Authorities said a clue in the investigation was a video posted online early Sunday morning by persons in Connecticut, who may have been involved in the bomb attempt. The video, posted on a site registered one day before the attack, has the Taliban in Pakistan claiming responsibility for the attempted bombing.

Connecticut was where Shahzad was living at the time.  He drove the car to New York City, just after tinting the windows of the Pathfinder, from Connecticut.  The license plate on the car was stolen from a repair shop in Connecticut.  That would be a big coincidence — or, alternatively, the plotters would have to somehow know that Hakimullah Mehsud was still alive and convince him to make a video for them without him having any involvement in the plot.   Possible?  Perhaps, but it’s getting less likely by the day.

Update: I’m a little struck by the parallels to the first World Trade Center bombing.  In that case, the bomb worked but was poorly designed for the purpose of destroying the building.  The vehicle used was easily traced back to the terrorists, too, although in that case by the VIN on an axle and rental-company receipts.  They don’t seem to learn much from their failures.

Update II: Does anyone else see the hand of the NSA in this?

The number from a disposable cellphone led FBI agents to the suspect arrested Monday night for allegedly driving a car bomb into Times Square on Saturday evening, according to a senior official.

“They were able to basically get one phone number and by running it through a number of databases, figure out who they thought the guy was,” the official said. …

The suspect didn’t still have the phone. But using a lot of technology and access to database, agents located the suspect. Appearing in person in the Justice Department briefing room at 1:30 a.m., Attorney General Eric Holder said the suspect, a Pakistan-born American named Faisal Shahzad, 30, was arrested at John F. Kennedy International Airport while attempting to board a flight for Dubai.

“Using a lot of technology and access to database[s]” … hmm, who would have that kind of access?  (via the Boss Emeritus)

Frankly I’m surprised they didn’t blame it on the SUV.

The media kept saying he was a white guy, but he’s a brown guy.

Is this racial profiling working?????

The media also think Barry is the blackest black man to have ever existed, and that all Hispanics look like Speedy Gonzalez which is why we’ll all be profiled.

Inconceivable that a light skinned Pakistani exists, let alone one who may have “whited” up a little more after a few Connecticut winters.

What is really bothersome; no doubt that attacks within the American homeland are going to take place. Bush and his administration warned us all that they stopped numerous attempts before they got too far along. This administration appears to be much weaker than the Bush administration with their efforts towards such plots. Scary times we face on so many levels.

So, let’s play.

Connecticut is a BLUE BLUE state – this Muslim terrorist was obviously surrounded by Democrats and other blue-staters – do they now get charged with aiding and abetting this terrorist by not reporting him to authorities?

Just throwing it out there – sort of like that idiot Sherlock Bloomberg did. Why not? Wild, baseless speculation seems to be the coin of the realm when the faint possibility of a white person committing a terrorist act is the national story of the day – so let’s hit them back twice as hard.

Why would this scumbag choose Democrat-heavy Connecticut to live in? More sympathizers than he’d find in a red state?

Boy. Thinking like an Obamacrat is easy. The sky is the limit when reality is jettisoned.

He became a citizen in April 2009, then immediately left for Pok-ee-ston. But let’s not believe he was al Qaeda or anything.

So he became a ‘citizen’ on Obama’s watch, and nearly killed a bunch of people in NYC on Obama’s watch, which was narrowly averted strictly because of his own incompetence and because of nothing Obama did – in fact, Obama was yucking it up and making jokes written for him by Comedy Central writers about killing the Jonas Brothers with Hellfire missiles when this was all happening.

There is a limited supply of trained specialists in countering Islamofascism, but an endless supply of foolish and hateful muslims. The pattern will repeat more often if the current regime in DC refuses to identify the enemy and use muddled language to obfuscate the facts.

And were accused by the Democrats of making all that stuff up.

“Using a lot of technology and access to database[s]” … hmm, who would have that kind of access? (via the Boss Emeritus)

I’m thinking CTU.

The suspect didn’t still have the phone. But using a lot of technology and access to database, agents located the suspect.

Only 1/2? So what number does 1/2 constitute?

Last time I checked, the Senior Democrat Senator was a former Klansman.

Speaking of racist southern Democrats, I watched a fascinating PBS documentary the other night about Patsy Mink, who was the first Japanese-American elected to Congress. She was one of my Congress critters when I lived in Hawaii, but in later years she became one of the very first Democrats to contract Bush Derangement Syndrome, when she showed up at the 2000 Electoral College Meeting to demand that Gore be seated as President.

Anyway, the documentary noted that when Hawaii was trying for Statehood in the late 1950s, a large group of Southern Democrats tried to block the move, claiming that the residents of the Islands were “too stupid” to become Americans.

Of course, they then realized that “stupid” was exactly the voter base they wanted and needed, and as a result they’ve controlled the State since JFK was President.

As for people who wonder why these recent terrorists that have botched attacks inside the US are not very competent – well, it could be that good old USA has killed all the competent ones. Al Qaeda is down to its JV team now. If they had any real pros left, you would think they would have sent one of them to do this bombing since it was such an important revenge attack.

So it appears that our “kill ‘em all” strategy so decried by the Left since 9/11 may actually have worked.

rockmom on May 4, 2010 at 10:09 AM

Let me be the first to congratulate our armed forces overseas who would’ve been happier to launch a “predator drone” attack on this guys turban back when he was cooling his heels in Pock-E-stahn than to read on the news that the guy came to the US and parked a Pathfinder in Times Square with stuff he learned how to do while cooling his heels in Pock_E_Stahn. Our boys have one more hellfire to count, polish, keep nice ‘n neat that could’ve had this dirtbags name on it.

Maybe next time fellas.

I does not matter if the guy turns out to be of Pakistani descent, the important thing is that the media left a first impression that he is a tea party man.
That’s the way they nudge the nation’s world view.

TheSitRep on May 4, 2010 at 10:11 AM

Will this guy get a one time “flex fuel” vehicle tax credit, established for Jihadi’s only? The propane surely burns cleaner than the gasoline and the left surely has to be happy that the jihadis are becoming more ecofriendly in their pursuit to establish the global Islamic Caliphate.//

Historically the klan has been predominantly peopled with Democrats, who were actually the party at the core of segregation, slavery, etc. Tell you what though – call Senator Byrd’s office and inquire as to his thoughts on the relative party affiliation of klan members in his experience.

Midas on May 4, 2010 at 10:14 AM

ha ha imagine how awesome the guy must have felt boarding the plane thinking he was getting away and then the pants sh*tting he did when the authorities came on to remove him and his a**hole friends.

It’s pretty awesome they caught him so fast.

But it’s so predictable that Hotair clowns find something to complain about:
-he’s a democrat
-he’s an immigrant
-he got his citizenship while Obama was president
-left will complain about the surveillance
-left complained when Bush did this kind of surveillance why not now
-left was hoping this was a teabagger
-left is disappointed he’s just an old-fashioned islamic terrorist a**hole
-left wants to make sure he gets a free lawyer
etc
etc
etc

So predictable.

So were comments like this from Mayor Bloomberg:

Homegrown maybe a mentally deranged person or someone with a political agenda that doesn’t like the health care bill or something. It could be anything.

Go take care of the plight of the Inuit Indians, or something.

When did ernesto go full troll?

myrenovations on May 4, 2010 at 10:19 AM

Here is my speculation on how the guy was tracked down by the disposable phone. He used that phone to call the SUV seller; by reviewing the seller’s phone records the disposable phone number is obtained. This number can then be searched for any other calls made from/to it. Also, having that number would allow them to pinpoint the exact store where it was sold and to review surveillance tapes there. All this could be done without violating anyone’s rights.
