Torches, smashed windows – must have been a Tea Party!
posted at 10:12 am on May 3, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
After months of warning that Tea Party protests would erupt into violence, a wave of vandalism and violence crested in Santa Cruz this weekend. Masked protesters wielding torches swarmed through the business district, smashing windows and chanting “the streets are on fire!” and “Revolution!” It’s exactly the kind of armed uprising that Tea Party critics predicted … except that it didn’t erupt at a Tea Party:
A group of protesters demonstrating at a May Day rally for worker’s and immigrant rights downtown broke off into a riot vandalizing about a dozen businesses around 10:30 p.m. Saturday, police said.
Windows were left shattered and graffiti including anarchy signs were tagged onto buildings. The Rittenhouse Building, Urban Outfitters, Jamba Juice and Velvet Underground all had windows broken, according to Capt. Steve Clark.
Santa Cruz police asked for help from all agencies in the county to break up the riot of about 200 people. At one point, protesters lit a fire on the porch of Caffe Pergolesi and blocked access to firefighters, officers said. Police were able to clear out the demonstrators before more damage was caused.
A large rock sat outside Verizon Wireless on the 100 block of Cooper Street, where vandals tried to break the window twice, according to Clark.
Jim Hoft has video of the riot:
Let’s do a quick recap. Tea Parties have been held in various locations for well over a year, and none of them has turned violent at all. Arizona passes an immigration law a week ago, and already we’ve had one Leftist demonstration result in violence, calls for the overthrow of the US, and rioting.
Will the same hyperventilating media that sees a militia in every Tea Party make the same broad-stroke analysis of the open-borders Left after a real show of violence and demands for revolution? Don’t hold your breath.
Update: Bob Owens at Confederate Yankee says it wasn’t just Santa Cruz, either, but also Asheville, NC. The Boss Emeritus finds another in San Francisco. She also finds a Univision reporter participating in a protest he was covering. Will Univision suspend the reporter as KOTA did Shad Olson?

Let the mainstream media be hypocritical in their coverage. Nobody is paying attention to them anyway. What a joke they have become.

You won’t hear anything about illegal immigrant behaving illegally. The MSM believes that they will all become future voters for the Democratic party.

The problem with this issue is it is framed as a Mexican issue. While I believe we let people in this country to do jobs and we created this problem in a way. I think that this has to be thought of as a whole. Mexicans aren’t the only people who want to come to this country. We must have equal protection under the law. That poor person from Uganda shouldn’t have to be pushed to the back burner because of expediency and a shared border.
tomas on May 3, 2010 at 10:19 AM
Just goes to show exactly what this sector of the population is about. Would be interesting to find out how many of the folks doing the rioting are illegals and how many are lefty loons causing mayhem in support of illegals. Can’t we just deport them all? Let them have their own little country? Oh wait, I guess in California they pretty much do already!

I was thinking about this on the way to work this morning… 18+ months of Tea Party protests and the main violence has been by leftists against Tea Party people such as Ken Gladney and the guy whose finger got bitten off.
Any time you get a lefty protest, though, it’s typically accompanied by rioting and violence or at least a habit of trying to provoke people into starting fights.

You just don’t understand…when will you conservatives ever begin to understand.
These riots were born from the Tea Party, the Tea Party has set the tone…this is what they wanted to do, but the media was watching, so they didn’t.
These riots, torching, destroying is the fault of the Tea Party and there pent up angry mood…it was in their hearts, it was what they wanted, it is the Tea Party’s fault for making protesting available to everyone, they made protesting acceptable, meaningful.
In forty years, these kids will be protesting just like the Tea Party…they are in training, kind of like an internship.

I think in many cases they are the Marxist/Communist protesters.
The media in this country is not on the side of freedom and they have shown that for many, many years. I just wonder what they think will happen to them when they finally get their utopia. It has to be something wonderful otherwise they are just useful idiots.

The violence, generally demonstrated by leftist rallies, is nothing compared to the inherent danger of the ideas expressed by the Tea Parties. Braking windows and setting fires is one thing. Damaged property can be fixed or replaced.
Demonstrating for freedom, liberty, fiscal responsibility and limited government is some totally different. Ideas are inherently more dangerous the actions. “The pen is mightier than the sword.” The founding fathers knew the inherent tyranny of an over powerful central government and feared it. And, rightly so. The Tea Parties express those same ideas today. Those ideas led to revolution and humiliation of the greatest empire. How can that compare to a broke window?
EliTheBean on May 3, 2010 at 10:36 AM
That would explain the heightened tension.
Daggett on May 3, 2010 at 10:38 AM
Geraldo totally denigrated the Tea Parties in the wake of the 20 March non-spitting, non-racial name slurring event. Last night he reported on this issue and gave it about 2.5 seconds of coverage. Had it have been a Tea party that caused all this damage, it’d have been a cataclysm for Geraldo, but, since these were Hispanics/Latinos doing all this damage, then, natch, no reporting, no analysis, no in depth pictures of Geraldo standing in front of broken store fronts, no calculations of lost businesses, no assessment of injuries, no questioning of police, no witnessess—nothing. *crickets chirping*…..
travesty.

right2bright on May 3, 2010 at 10:39 AM
The travesty is that you wasted your time watching Geraldo…
right2bright on May 3, 2010 at 10:40 AM
Yep.
There will be no leftist concern about this violence because, like everything else in their relative moralistic equivalency mindset, it is justified, because it is oriented *against* ‘the right’, ‘conservatives’, etc.
Tea Party folks, even if non-violent, are a threat to their worldview, and are therefore to be viewed and described as an actual threat, even if it’s simply a group of blue-haired grannies on a street corner.
It’s an idealogical war, and anything – *anything* that *their* side does is ‘OK’. *Anything* that our side does – including breathing, speaking, etc – is a threat to be destroyed.
This is true whether it’s political discussion, allocation of resources (eg: water/money to Dem districts, not to Rep districts), media coverage and spin, targeting of private citizens and property, etc.
The MSM will *not* cover this actual violence with anything resembling the breathless concern about imagined potential violence with which they cast the Tea Party and participants. We saw this as well in the unfounded rumors about the census worker who was killed (must’ve been an anti-government right winger, remember?) compared to actual killing of military recruiters, shooting at a Holocaust museum, leftie nutbag flying his plane into a govt. office, etc.
Midas on May 3, 2010 at 10:40 AM
Why would some participants in this choose to wear masks or scarves to hide their faces? Could it be that they actually expect an eruption of violence that might get them into legal trouble if they could be identified? You don’t see face masks at tea parties.

no dude–my wife happened to be watching Fox, I was working on something else and came up from the basement and this case was on. After a few, “Geraldo’s a dork” I caught this crappy reporting of the event. I think AP posted a thread on how biased Geraldo’s reporting against the Tea Parties has been. Geraldo’s reporting (or distinct and blatant lack thereof) on this violence this weekend should be put up in a thread. Geraldo on 20 March versus Geraldo on 1 May, would be illuminating….

It wasn’t the local anarchists rioting in Asheville. They came from as far away as Oklahoma City.
The local newspaper says 17 have been arrested and charged and only two are local.
Coincidentally (?) there was a Christian rally going on adjacent to where the riot took place and many of the damaged cars belonged to those at the rally.

It’s interesting that the Ashville news clip describes May Day events as demonstrations on behalf of workers’ rights when, in fact, May Day is a communist/socialist demonstration in protest of capitalism. The Santa Cruz and Ashville mayhem appears to be the work of youth anarchist groups who show up like clockwork at WTO events. These tools for the Marxist-Maoists are fouling their own nests. They are spoiled punks all, unable to recognize the ideology that will enslave them.

Somehow I think they’re showing that AZ was correct in thinking that perhaps the violent thuggery, riots, and criminal activity is something you wouldn’t want to have and encourage… but I’m usually wrong about these things.

I have no trouble believing it. I live on the border of Texas, and the Mexicans literally stand on the bridge between the US and Mexico and protest when we don’t give them what they want, as their government literally eggs them on. Some of them, illegal and legal protest over here on the US side of the border, 5 minutes from their own country. Why ICE doesn’t get out there and arrest the ones that they know are illegal, I don’t know. We, as citizens have the right to protest in our country, not them, and there they are, easy to round up, and walk right back into Mexico. It just makes my blood boil.
Susanboo on May 3, 2010 at 2:48 PM
I am certainly dismayed at the reactions of many to the new Arizona law (which I feel is a perfectly reasonable and necessary piece of legislation). However, to ascribe this “rioting” as having anything to do with the May Day demonstrations is rather lacking in substance. Even to call this a “riot” is a stretch (particularly in light of there having been only one person arrested).
Ed, you have a tendency toward exaggeration on this site, and I don’t think this benefits a conservative cause when you do.

Rbastid on May 3, 2010 at 4:38 PM
The Mainstream Media typically gives any radical faction from the “Left” a pass when they engage in demonstrations, on the basis that these factions are justified in protesting whatever it is they’re protesting, so if it spills over into violence that just means that they have been pushed to the wall and must do whatever they need to do in order to get some action on the issue.
Of course, since the Tea Partiers are perceived to be a “Right” based group, the MSM premise is that they must be protesting from a basis of racism or anti-government or some other reason that the MSM deems to be unjustified or wrong in their ideology, and therefore try to manufacture the perception that these people are violent militant radicals out to destroy society.
This has been the premise and agenda of the Liberal/Progressive factions of the MSM for at least since the VietNam era, and has only progressively gotten worse. The only hope for change is beginning to happen now, with Obama dissing the press and MSM, and playing political games with them, to the point lately that Lib/Prog journalists are finally waking up to how the POTUS and Dems are using and abusing the MSM’s sympathies in shameful ways.

Dear President Obama: I’m planning to move my family and extended family into Mexico for my health, and I would like to ask you to assist me.
We’re planning to simply walk across the border from the U.S. Into Mexico, and we’ll need your help to make a few arrangements.
We plan to skip all the legal stuff like visas, passports, immigration quotas and laws.
I’m sure they handle those things the same way you do here. So, would you mind telling your buddy, President Calderon, that I’m on my way over?
Please let him know that I will be expecting the following:
1. Free medical care for my entire family.
2. English-speaking government bureaucrats for all services I might need, whether I use them or not.
3. Please print all Mexican government forms in English.
4. I want my grandkids to be taught Spanish by English-speaking (bi-lingual) teachers.
5. Tell their schools they need to include classes on American culture and history.
6. I want my grandkids to see the American flag on one of the flag poles at their school.
7. Please plan to feed my grandkids at school for both breakfast and lunch.
8. I will need a local Mexican driver’s license so I can get easy access to government services.
9. I do plan to get a car and drive in Mexico , but, I don’t plan to purchase car insurance, and I probably won’t make any special effort to learn local traffic laws.
10. In case one of the Mexican police officers does not get the memo from their president to leave me alone, please be sure that every patrol car has at least one English-speaking officer.
11. I plan to fly the U.S. Flag from my house top, put U S. Flag decals on my car, and have a gigantic celebration on July 4th. I do not want any complaints or negative comments from the locals.
12. I would also like to have a nice job without paying any taxes, or have any labor or tax laws enforced on any business I may start.
13. Please have the president tell all the Mexican people to be extremely nice and never say critical things about me or my family, or about the strain we might place on their economy.
14. I want to receive free food stamps.
15. Naturally, I’ll expect free rent subsidies.
16. I’ll need Income tax credits so although I don’t pay Mexican Taxes, I’ll receive money from the government.
17. Please arrange it so that the Mexican Gov’t pays $4,500 to help me buy a new car.
18. Oh yes, I almost forgot, please enroll me free into the Mexican Social Security program so that I’ll get a monthly income in retirement.
I know this is an easy request because you already do all these things for all his people who walk over to the U..S. From Mexico . I am sure that President Calderon won’t mind returning the favor if you ask him nicely.
Thank you so much for your kind help. You da man!!!
