On my desk: The Manchurian President

posted at 10:27 am on May 1, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

My friend Aaron Klein, now a WABC radio host who has done some amazing work in probing Islamist terrorism in the Middle East, and Brenda Elliott have turned their attention to domestic politics and Barack Obama in his latest book, The Manchurian President: Barack Obama’s Ties to Communists, Socialists and Other Anti-American Extremists. The book, which comes out this week, promises an explosive look at Obama’s relationship to radicals; Klein’s original reporting on Van Jones helped expose the ties the “green jobs czar” had to radical leftists and pushed Jones into eventually resigning his post. Aaron gives Hot Air readers an exclusive preview of one of the connections he reports in the new book:

In just one of the revelations in this politically radioactive release, the book uncovers for the first time where and how Obama first met Weatherman founder Bill Ayers – and it is much earlier than previously believed.

In his 1995 autobiography, Dreams From My Father, Obama writes about a speech given during his college years in connection with Students for Economic Democracy. SED was a campus group affiliated with Tom Hayden, one of the principal organizers of Students for a Democratic Society, the 1960s antiwar movement from which Ayers’ Weatherman splintered.

The book ties Obama to a number of other radicals who were associated with SED’s parent group, whose founding members included fellow antiwar protesters, a politician known to be a communist collaborator, and a founding member of the Black Panthers.

Until now, little has been revealed about Obama’s college years, with the president refusing to release his transcript or comment in depth about which specific individuals or organizations he was associated with,

The Manchurian President also reveals Obama’s associations with the Nation of Islam, Black Liberation Theology and black political extremists, with extensive new information on the subjects.

Also detailed are Obama’s deep ties to ACORN, which are much more extensive than previously documented elsewhere. The book additionally describes how a socialist-led, ACORN-affiliated union helped facilitate Obama’s political career and now exerts major influence in the White House.

The Manchurian President contains potentially explosive information not only about President Obama but also concerning other officials in the White House, including top czars and senior advisers Valerie Jarrett and David Axelrod.

I just received my copy of the book and will try to complete reading it before Aaron appears on The Ed Morrissey Show this week to discuss the book. The book follows the efforts of David Freddoso’s The Case Against Barack Obama (reviewed here) and Jerome Corsi’s Obama Nation. Both of those books shed light on Obama’s past political associations and efforts, but didn’t get as much traction as they deserved, thanks to a wave of popular support for Obama.

The effort by Klein and Elliott, coming as it does after fifteen months of disillusioning reality about Obama’s hard-Left agenda, may have more success — and both of the other books may start getting more attention as well. There is another argument to be made, too, which is that the past matters less now than the present. The reality of Obama’s performance will make a more compelling argument in 2012 than the hidden realities of his previous connections. However, if this book delivers on his promise, it will provide more context for the present and help voters connect a few more dots in 2012 than they did in 2008. In any case, as with all of Aaron’s work, it will make great conversation when we chat this coming Wednesday at 4 pm ET on TEMS!

Update: I inexcusably overlooked the fact that Brenda Elliott coauthored the book with Aaron; I’ve updated the post above, and offer my apologies to Ms. Elliott.

Update II: Tom Maguire has more information on the Ayers/Obama relationship.

Update III: The interview is on Wednesday, not Tuesday. I’ve made the correction above.

There is another argument to be made, too, which is that the past matters less now than the present.

The bigger picture to me is simply that the media was designed to educate the public to these facts & dynamics so that the public could make rational choices as to the direction the public wished to see our country move in. All of this historical data on the Obama’s was readily available to our media, but they chose not to expose any of these very important facts & dynamics in an orchestrated effort to paint an absolute false impression of this man’s and his wife’s true character.

If we, the people, are to learn from this debacle, we must be willing to face the truths about the past and the present; how we arrived at this moment… This man is not only unqualified for potus, but he was sold to the American people based upon pure lies. The media has failed it’s people and that’s the real story in my view. Obama wrote two books that were very revealing about himself and his beliefs; the media wrote pure lies and hid the facts.

I’m interested in this book, but the one I am waiting for is one, written by someone who cannot be written off as a “right wing crank,” that excoriates the MSM for their wholesale abdication of their self-proclaimed “objectivity”–and outright duplicity–in foisting a fawning portrait of Teh One on an uniformed electorate leading up to Messiah’s investment.

When we talk about liberal bias in the media and throughout our popular culture, we tend to focus on skewed news coverage, lying through omission, and Hollywood’s penchant for portraying Republican politicians, religious Christians, and gun toting Southerners as villians. What we overlook is the total blackout on any information regarding the American Left.

The media refuses to tell us anything about all the left wing radicals who came out of both the hippie movement of the 1960s and the punk rock movement of the 1970s/80s, who decided to try to change the system from within, and got jobs in government, government agencies, academia, public unions, etc, etc. They want people to believe that left wingers don’t exist. They want us to believe that the people who show up for anti-war rallies, pro-abortion rallies, global warming rallies, etc, etc, don’t have a distinct left wing world view, and only attend these rallies do to their “passion” over these singular issues.

The Republican party bears the lion’s share of the blame for not recognizing and combating this successful propaganda campaign, which inevitably led to election of Barack Obama.

I think this will be true for the 2012 nominee. Obama’s record and the economy will be enough to sink him. But as Klein says the book will provide context for his poor record as POTUS based on his past affiliations and how that shaped his worldview and informed his policy decisions.

Say what you will about Hannity, but he’s probably the only one that consistently and repeatedly reminds everyone about Obama’s radical associations. MM does this also in print media.

I have a question though and it’s somewhat related. Why is it that no one gives too much credit to Glenn Beck’s efforts to expose Obama and his past?

When Rush and Sean talk about each other and OTHER radio talk show hosts, they don’t mention Glenn. Sean, for example, always mentions Rush and Mark Levin. That’s great! They’re wonderful, but no one mentions Glenn. No one mentions Michael Savage either I guess.

Oink on May 1, 2010 at 11:52 AM

Also by the way, the Left is amazing at using our best qualities and principles against us.

Now personally, if I were king, I would beat them at that game by completely, utterly, viciously, coldly, and without remorse, seek out and annihilate them, treating them the same as an armed enemy who was out to murder me, or, to mix metaphors, as a cancer.

justltl on May 1, 2010 at 11:55 AM

Many conservatives recognized a dangerous, lying Communist in Obama after catching him in significant lies and learning about his lifelong associations raised by and working alongside Communists. I hope that after watching Obama in action for over a year, many others will now be open to the information in this book.

The liberals and moderates I argued with before the election insisted that there are no such thing as Communists in America anymore, and that if Obama were an extremist, the media would have covered it. They truly believed that all the talk of Obama’s radicalism and involvement with Marxists, Maoists, racists and criminals was just right-wing smears out to harm a high-minded, moderate liberal, brilliant professor.

The mainstream media created this monster and is now propagandizing for his harmful agenda, distorting the truth and hiding relevant facts. Patriotic Americans should be doing everything we can to topple the left-controlled mainstream media and replace it with a pro-America, pro-liberty, truth-telling media. Bravo to Aaron Klein for doing more than his share to get the truth out to the American people.

Unless Michelle Obama suddenly dressed up as the Queen of Hearts, no one who voted for Obama will see this kind of criticism as anything but sour grapes extremist loonytoonism.

Obama sucks as president. NOW.

The past is only prologue…

Ream him for his ongoing follies, from bring KSM into the civilian courts in NYC, wimping out against the homicidal Iranian despots as those who protested against their regime were being (and are still being) killed off, his weakening of sanctions against the Iranian nuke program, shooting his mouth off about cops “acting stupidly” and demagoging about Arizona while not doing his sworn duty to secure the nation’s borders, ad nauseam…

The MSM doesn’t care abot Barry’s corrupting influences or sleazy upbringing.

He is their boy, and they will run endless interference for him against all hysterical, unjust attacks from the radical Right.

Only his present imbecilities have any chance of being noticed and hurting his chances in 2012.

Why is it trash?

Inanemergencydial on May 1, 2010 at 12:44 PM

because it’s published to cash in on irrational obama hatred, authored by a writer for wing nut daily. he just recycles all the dirt he’s been spewing about obama for years.

Update: I inexcusably overlooked the fact that Brenda Elliott coauthored the book with Aaron; I’ve updated the post above, and offer my apologies to Ms. Elliott.

Ed, you forgot to change “his latest book” to “their latest book” in the opening paragraph.

Hope the book is a best-seller.

Have you weighed in on any of the ‘trash’ that has been written about republicans by so-called wingnuts? If not, why? Is your crusade against trash or are you simply a partisan?

BTW, hatred of Obama is not irrational. Obama stokes it. It is his gameplan. It is only rational to hate someone who wished you poor and subservient.

ohiobabe on May 1, 2010 at 10:51 AM

Your statement is correct. I can accept there are those who just stick their heads in the sand and hope for good. It’s the population that is actively working with Obama to destroy this country in order to re-make it for their own benefit that scares me.

Badbrucskie on May 1, 2010 at 1:19 PM

SCROTUS is nothing but their point man. Look at the way things are. I’m sure this book will validate my views. There is nothing legitimate about him.

Why is it “irrational” to oppose the head of the Democratic National Socialist Party?

He’s trying to bankrupt the country overloading the budget with all manner of entitlement programs that we cannot afford.

He is weakening our stature abroad, virtually inviting attack.

What’s not to like?

I’ve read The Case Against Barak Obama, which was excellent and Obamanation, which was pretty dry. Add in Culture of Corruption and the Glenn Beck show and I just don’t see how this book can offer anything new unless the author got a peek at Obama’s college transcripts.

The media will have an easier time ignoring this one. I like where Dick Morris is going with his books where he achonowledges Obama’s radical past and discusses the radicalism and danger of his present policies.

Chip on May 1, 2010 at 1:41 PM

The problem with a book like this, and books like these in general, is that they are books. To read them requires that a person actually spend the time and money to procure a copy.

Who is going to do this? The people who already know (or strongly suspect) what is in the book and approve of its message.

I know the authors want to make money from this book. They spent time and money of their own to research and write it. But if they really want as many people as possible to be made aware of the information they have uncovered, posting that information to blogs and other websites is the best way to disseminate it.

The truth matters, but truth that people are unaware of is truth that cannot help them. If the average American had good knowledge of who and what Obama is during the Dem primaries, he wouldn’t be in the White House now. We might have Hillary instead because McCain was such a loser, but we wouldn’t have Obama.

Modern politics is an information war. The lefties control most of the media and use that to block and distort the truth while promoting lies. Writing a book that will only be read by republicans, conservatives, and libertarians, and even then only by those eager to spend the time and money to do so, is literally preaching to the choir. They already know that Obama is bad. They buy and read this book to confirm that assessment of him. Independents and honest leftists (also known as future libertarians) won’t get this information because they aren’t looking for it. You have to put it out there where they are likely to encounter it, or at least encounter someone from the left trying to discredit it.

Think for a moment about the stings that brought down ACORN. Had O’Keefe and Giles written a book about their experiences, instead of providing video on the internet, nothing would have happened. Breitbart uses the power of mass media to get the truth out there, and the authors of this book should consider doing the same.

Are you at odds with what Rev. Al Sharpton said:

“First of all, then we have to say the American public overwhelmingly voted for socialism when they elected President Obama,

And just in case you need to understand the subject, The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition

Defines socialism as:

The stage in Marxist-Leninist theory intermediate between capitalism and communism, in which collective ownership of the economy under the dictatorship of the proletariat has not yet been successfully achieved.

Chip on May 1, 2010 at 1:59 PM

Something has been bugging me and I have to point it out. One of the people doing spectacular research on Obama right from the start was a blogger named Trevor Loudon. Never heard of him? Well I’m not surprised, he’s from…New Zealand. Yep, during Obama’s campaign early on, when no one was doing any digging, this guy was on the case. If you think I’m kidding check out his blog and look at the Obama Files on the lower right side. He’s up to Obama Files 100 and that’s not counting the stuff he did on Rev. Wright.
I just wanted to give credit where credit is due.

Obowmao is attempting to implement socialism on a national level – and we Supposedly voted for this – despite the plain fact Obama and the rest of the National Socialist Leftists weren’t honest about it (and still aren’t)during the campaign.

So what exactly are you trifling at?

Hopefully, if not in this book then another, someone will look into Obama being influenced by Frank Marshall Davis.

Vatican Watcher on May 1, 2010 at 10:51 AM

FMD was part of trio Chicago Communists that now have ALL 3 of their acolytes pulling the levers of our destruction. AS Kruschev aptly put it “we will destroy you from within”.

Frank Marshall Davis trained Barack Obama

Don Rose trained David Axelrod

Vernon Jarrett trained Valerie Jarrett

Chicago is a cess pool of American communism/progressivism, from Upton Sinclair to Saul Alinsky to the 3 mentioned above, to Barack Obama.

Manchurian indeed! A very apt title.
