Hey, shouldn’t Obama skip that odious White House Correspondents Dinner and head to the gulf?

posted at 9:11 pm on April 30, 2010 by Allahpundit

Not my idea, although I wish I could take credit for it. In fact, it comes from far-left Nation editor Katrina Vanden Heuvel by way of Tapper. She’s predicting exactly what’s going to happen, I think: If the spill is as horrifically bad as news stories are making it sound — the environmental equivalent of a Category Five hurricane — then the optics of The One larfing it up with Jay Leno while star-humping journalists look on simply won’t fly. In fact, I’m already hearing grumbles on Twitter about him and Michelle having enjoyed a getaway in North Carolina last weekend, days after the oil rig exploded, even though the magnitude of the disaster didn’t become apparent until the last few days. Get thee to New Orleans, champ. I’m sure Biden will be happy to hobnob with the “Jersey Shore” cast or whatever at the big f***ing deal that is the WHCD.

Or am I being too hard on The One? His attendance at “Nerdprom,” as the people who desperately want to see and be seen but are too ashamed to admit it ironically dub the event, won’t make the oil flow any faster or slower. Shouldn’t we be beyond the dopey photo-op politics that the left demanded of Bush? A galaxy of status-obsessed losers will be in D.C. this weekend hoping to glimpse the president. It’d be a shame to disappoint them. Let’s vote on it!

I’ll skip the “if this were Bush” and just say that the MSM hasn’t really grasped the enormous scope of this oil spill disaster in the Gulf. Neither has the Obama Administration. And Janet Napolitano, well, totally clueless. It’s clear that the MSM is a little reluctant to look too closely due to Obama’s flip flop on off shore drilling, feeble as it was. Whether you agree or disagree with increasing offshore drilling, this is why a lot of people are unwilling to stick their neck out.

Katrina will look like a cakewalk compared to the economic disaster that this thing will visit on the Gulf Coast. And where’s the $500 billion bailout coming from this time?

BP is going to be hurt, maybe crippled. And I’m predicting that there will be several people in the Obama Admin who will be spending more time with their families before this is over.

I may seem cynical, but consider that the oil is still flowing with no prediction of when it will stop.

But that’s just my opinion.

Laura on April 30, 2010 at 10:23 PM

I think he should be very worried. I will pimp quote from my latest brilliant posting effort and YOU all get to guess the source:

…BP officials said they did everything possible, but a review of the response suggests that it may be too simplistic to place all the blame on the oil company. The federal government also had opportunities to move more quickly, but did not do so while it waited for a resolution to the spreading spill from BP, which was leasing the drilling rig that exploded in flames on April 20 and sank two days later. Eleven workers were left missing and are presumed dead..

The Department of Homeland Security waited until Thursday to declare that the incident was “a spill of national significance,” and then set up a second command center in Mobile. The actions came only after the estimate of the size of the spill was increased fivefold to 5,000 barrels a day.

The delay meant that the Homeland Security Department waited until late this week to formally request a more robust response from the Department of Defense, with Ms. Napolitano acknowledging even as late as Thursday afternoon that she did not know if the Defense Department even had equipment that might be helpful.

JavelinaBomb on April 30, 2010 at 10:03 PM

Mr. Bush took a lot of (unfair) heat for merely flying over the city while surveying the damage. Remember the Laura Bush claim in her book:

George W. only flew over New Orleans after Katrina, she says, because “he did not want one single life to be lost because someone was catering to the logistical requirements” of a visiting president.

Hopefully Mr. Obama will not require logistical catering which interferes with containment efforts, should he visit the disaster site.

Many many moons ago a barge broke free and ran into the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel at the beach. My father was awarded a no cure no pay contract to pull it off and was given a time frame in which to complete the job. Long before that time frame was up the people in charge felt that conditions were deteriorating and safety to the public would be impacted. The Navy came in took over the job. I don’t understand why all the best minds and equipment weren’t assembled to stop the flow of oil instead of being gathered to work on clean up. Just like our immigration situation, they always want to fix instead of cure.

My guess is he goes to the dinner, and while there he announces he’s going down to the Gulf and receives the huzzahs and platitudes of a mostly-orgasming audience of big media types and their celebrity guests.

Of course, other than driving a BP oil truck into the Correspondents’ Dinner and spraying the crowd with Gulf Coast Light Sweet Crude, even if Obama goes to the dinner and says nothing about the oil spill, he’s not going to get called on it by the majority of the crowd.

I think he should stay in DC. Although, the gulf coast would be a great place to take a date.

Gee, maybe B.O. blew up that oil rig as part of his energy agenda.

As it turns out, he’ll do both. Go the dinner tonight but advertise his trip South that will happen within 48 hours.

He should go, I`m looking forward to the pre-Statement shoutout to Ray Nagin.

Hey, shouldn’t Obama skip that odious White House Correspondents Dinner and head to the gulf?

.
He can’t.
Remember Obama at last year’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner?
“I am Barack Obama. Most of you covered me. All of you voted for me.”
.
It’s his peeps.
