Boehner: How does gaining 100 seats in November sound?

posted at 7:34 pm on April 30, 2010 by Allahpundit

It sounds … unlikely, John.

The House minority leader, speaking on National Public Radio’s “Morning Edition” on Friday, said that the “playing field” for the 2010 elections is wider than “anything we’ve seen around here during my 20 years.”

“At least 100 seats,” Boehner told NPR’s Steve Inskeep, when asked how many House districts are up for grabs. “You think there are 100 seats in the United States that could change hands?” Inskeep asked.

“I do,” Boehner responded.

“Well typically, you are correct there would be some limited number of seats in play,” Boehner said. “Let me remind you that Scott Brown won the Ted Kennedy Senate seat in Massachusetts. If Scott Brown can win in Massachusetts, there isn’t a seat in America that Republicans can’t win.”

He’s not the first person to float this possibility. Sean Trende of RCP made the case a few weeks ago that Democrats are sailing into an absolutely perfect political storm this year. Not since 1938, when 79 seats flipped, have the stars aligned this ideally; a triple-digit pick-up is on the radar screen, albeit at the far edge. My only question: Why on earth is Boehner, of all people, raising this idea? If a GOP tsunami hits and, say, 55 seats switch hands, we all know that the second story on the front page the next day will now be “GOP’S TAKE LOWER THAN EXPECTED.” Good work, John.

On a related note, Gerald Seib asks a question fraught with heart-ache: Should the GOP really want to take back the House?

If Republicans win control of the House, which is the big prize this year, they’d take on much more responsibility for what happens in Washington. Yet inevitably they would be in charge by such a slim margin they wouldn’t be able to really control much, particularly if Democrats keep control of the Senate, which seems likely.

Republicans’ own flaws and divisions, rather than those of the Democrats, would move to the forefront. President Obama actually would find it easier to move to the political center, which is where he’ll want to be for his own re-election campaign in 2012.

There are good reasons, in short, that some Republicans say privately that they hope they get close to taking control but don’t go over the top. That, they think, would set them up better to take back control of everything—presidency, House and Senate—in 2012…

Moreover, if Republicans take control of one chamber of Congress, Democratic leaders Nancy Pelosi in the House and Harry Reid in the Senate would recede a bit, leaving Mr. Obama more clearly the face of the Democrats. And despite his problems and critics, the president remains far and away the Democrats’ most popular figure and most effective spokesman.

Fair points all — if you remove policy from the equation, which, thanks to the stimulus and ObamaCare, you simply can’t do. Grassroots conservatives are frantic to impose some sort of brake on The One’s agenda before he pushes through whatever happens to be the next disastrous statist program he has on his agenda. If the GOP reclaims the House and not a single bill passes Congress for two years, great. That can’t be worse than another trillion-dollar boondoggle. Even if the inevitable tack to the right does improve Obama’s chances in 2012.

Fantastically depressing exit quotation from Ramesh Ponnuru: “Only once, a few weeks ago, have I heard anyone say that more than half of the [Republican] conference wants the majority. That congressman said that his colleagues do want to be in the majority but are not yet ready to do what it would take. But he thinks they’re getting there.”

Well if we’re going to be optimists how about this: Obamacare gets overturned, the GOP takes back the House and comes close in the Senate, and then Obama vetoes a Republican based healthcare reform plan that actually lowers the cost of healthcare insurance, etc and doesn’t take 4 years to implement?

Sorry if GOP is putting up get along to go alongs but I think the Tea Party and most Americans want a little more than being afraid to rock the boat or confronting the worst president ever.

So, yeah, we should want the House and Senate.

Fair point but it would be a whisper in a tsunami — it wouldn’t undo the fact that the media Democrats would be the minority party.

way to play the expectations game John…sigh, idiot.

the R’s will be lucky to take control of the house…I increasingly doubt that they will.

And, yeah, maybe they don’t want to. There are really good reasons (nothing to do with 2012)

the US will be faced with profound decisions in the next 3 to 5 years. The fact is that the Left has played a shrewd game all over the world.

We are now boxed in. Raise SocSec age to 70, or means test it. Ration healthcare to the non-connected (inevitable). Severe tax increases (via VAT or Carbon) amounting to 7% GDP.

In addition to these questions, the R’s face daily accusations of racism, nativism etc. if they don’t go along with Amnesty…will will ensure a permanent Dem/Left coalition. Look at what the press hurled at the Tea Partiers in D.C….that was just a brush back pitch.

On the other hand, they can play the part of the loyal piss and moan opposition, and get well paid, tend to their overseas investments and get all the perks of power (including non-rationed healthcare) and cushy retirement.

You know, at some point, we need to take a pencil to paper and write down exactly where we are:

1) We are now close to 100% dependent on foreign oil (i.e., the Middle East and Marxist dictatorships in Latin America). As of today, we now know we no longer have the political will to even attempt tapping oil reserves available to us in our own country.

2) We have passed into law tens of trillions of dollars in entitlements which we can no longer even hope to pay the interest on, much less pay down. Any political solution to that requires draconian reductions in entitlements…it’s not going to happen.

3) Our foreign policy is a complete shambles…in fact, any ally we may have had going into this is best served by ignoring us completely. Example: South Korea is now appealing to China and Russia for support over the Nork attack on it’s ship…this administration apparently has nothing to say about it. And, of course, we all know, by now, that Iran will have the bomb very soon. When that happens, I defy anybody to explain a single OPEC country that will defy them when they do.

4) We are now a crony-capitalist socialist state. Any private sector company that survives, now does so at the behest of the left. They’ll do what they need to do.

5) The media broadcasts propaganda in support of all of the above, 24/7. There are fewer and fewer citizens that have the will or wits to even see where we are.

So, even if we take every seat in the house…we won’t even make a dent.

The Lamestream Media is beleived by only by an ever diminishing few Kool-Aid infused morons any more. For far too long conservatives have been worried about the depiction of them by a press that’ll stop just short of full demonization, in exchange for complete capitulation to collectivist looters.

The path to victory in 10 & 12 is face to face debates (bypassing the LSM filter) as recently proposed by Newt challenging the Dhims on the blatant corruption by public sector unions & pols at the expense of the rest of us. They have to demonstrate that gov’t is corruption, who do seek preferences or special considerations from if there’s not a bureaucrat dispensing them?

The concept of of using Gov’t to fight corruption is ludicris, it is the fox guarding the henhouse. The public needs to be educated and shown that corruption can only be reduced by reducing Gov’t.

Archimedes on April 30, 2010 at 8:24 PM

November 3, 2010:

Barack Obama said Wednesday that he would not accept the results of the election. Democrats, claiming massive fraud, have demanded manual recounts of all votes cast in the November 2 elections until all Democrats come out ahead and said they plan to file a federal discrimination law suit against dead peoples votes not being counted past their first four ballots and illegals votes not being counted past their first six ballots. Barack Obama, Hugo Chavez, Fidel Castro and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad have all said the elections were not credible and urged Democrat Senators and Representatives who were fraudulently defeated at the polls to barricade themselves in their offices until Eric Holder, SEIC, ACORN and LaRaza could sort everything out.

Cheer up, AP. You know if you really thought about it, you would have known that 50% of the GOPers in Congress were still looking for a way out of victory. It’s who they are. “Losers”, as Louie DePalma would say.

As for the 100 seats: yeah, Boehner yapping about it is like a hex. Egad! Maybe he knows the Dems are going to go the whole nine yards for amnesty or try and jam cap & trade down our throats or something equally suicidal. I hope so. Regardless, shut up, John. STF up!

In the big picture, the problem with the Leftist media propaganda machine needs to be stopped.

And the citizenry needs to be educated and involved, so that the principles of the Founders are understood and advocated.

I pretty much hate people and think that there are too many lazy-assed moochers and nitwits in the country to bring this all about, but one can always hope, and work hard to try to bring it about.

If nothing else I would relish watching Pelosi cry as she hands that surrealistically large and clownish giant gavel over.

I’d also like to see her given a few good whacks over the noggin with it, but I know that violent talk is verboten here, so I won’t say that out loud.

He’ll probably confess he’s a Muslim saying that’s part of the culture.

At least Boehner’s an optimist. The power of positive thinking. (:

“If a GOP tsunami hits and, say, 55 seats switch hands, we all know that the second story on the front page the next day will now be “GOP’S TAKE LOWER THAN EXPECTED.” Good work, John.”

Gee, Allah, you mean if stupid ol’ Boehner hadn’t said this, the media coverage would’ve been favorable?

Speaking of scandals, does anyone else think that the First Derrière might have undergone liposuction?

I have absolutely no information or proof thereof, but I suspect that it did.

Like sending SWAT teams to Drill Rigs 8 days after a mysterious accident.

Anyone know where Highhopes and neurosculptor got to?
I liked their posts and am worried about them.
Also, does anyone know if that young fellow, Ronin, is ok?
He made a seriously ‘out there’ last post- I think sometime before Christmas- and I was also genuinely concerned about him.

justltl on April 30, 2010 at 9:15 PM

Loser Team R had a chance to change leadership and they kept the same feckless cowardly female genital tools in place. If they get 100 more seats than loser dorkfaces like Boehner and the other embarrassing feckless frauds need to be told thank you okay now go away.

They are not the future.

If the Democrats are stupid enough to try to push Amnesty through after ObowmaCare, and people start to actually read the Finance Regulation Bill by Chris Dodd…

… I can see 100+.

redridinghood on April 30, 2010 at 9:36 PM

That congressman said that his colleagues do want to be in the majority but are not yet ready to do what it would take. But he thinks they’re getting there.

The current crew weren’t ready to govern either, and look where they are. They’ve managed to set us back to 1930′s Germany with respect to health laws, and they’re about to pay off their robber barons with new fiscal legislation which allows the plutocracy to tap an artery in the Federal Reserve.

Anything we can do to disrupt that march is good.

unclesmrgol on April 30, 2010 at 9:38 PM

To fix this problem people will need be voted out, taxes will go up, and a ton of federal employees must get walking papers. Unions must take a hit, pensions will suffer. After all of that, more will need to be done. Our government has promised what there is no way to deliver, either on the state, or federal level.

As hard as this will be, we need to do it, we all know it, yet hate to admit it. Some here know what it is like to write a check with your mouth that your ass can’t cash, our asses are currently on the line, time to get real!

The Progressives, and the UN has to go, they are the pigs, we, are the trough.

Ugly times are coming, gird your loins…

it’s lovely to think it, but with the RNC in a clusterf*ck with Steele at the helm, it seems unlikely, but…oh…are the people pissed off?
Yes.
Will it be so overwhelming it can escape another Franken mess?
I dunno.

correct. Look at New Jersey – the yelling and screaming will be deafening.

Hold dear and true – self sufficiency and good ol hard work is the key – cuts will HAVE to be made. Included in this will be our dear public servants in Purple shirts.

While deafening, it will have to be endured for the survival of this Country and true Americans (most without these lovely perks no one can afford) understand this, and I hope, would sacrifice, even if they do have the cush to retire in luxury at taxpayer expense.
