Tech alert: Hot Air server migration tonight; Update: What to do tomorrow

posted at 8:09 pm on April 29, 2010 by Allahpundit

As Joe Biden might say, this is a big f***ing deal. We’ve been cruising along on Michelle’s server since the Salem acquisition in February, but as of this morning our tech wizard (and new dad!) Mark Jaquith has the virtual U-Haul packed and ready to roll. The good news? Salem’s servers should make the site load twice as fast and will guarantee stability as traffic gets heavy in the fall. The bad news? In order to shift us over to Salem HQ, Mark has to unplug parts of the site tonight — including comments. Things should be fine until 9 or 9:30 ET, but after that everyone’s posting privileges will shut down (including mine and Ed’s). So don’t get nervous when you see the “you are not permitted to leave comments” message. You haven’t been banned; that just means that Mark has the U-Haul on the road.

We’ve also got a minor redesign in the works which should be visible soon. Everything will be in its familiar place — Headlines, Top Picks, the Blog, the Greenroom — but things should look a bit tidier on the front page. Stay tuned.

Update: A word to the wise from techies who are e-mailing: If you find yourself still unable to leave comments tomorrow morning, try clearing your cache. And please be patient. For some readers, it could take a full day before the migration is complete and you’re able to see new content on the site.

I’m not the brightest computer geek but wouldn’t this be easier if the techie just posted the IP address on the website? That way, we could each manually edit the onboard DNS directory to circumvent internet querying for the address.

No, I’m confident that we’ll be promised that we’ll be able to keep our Hotair if we like it, just like our doctor. Only the Townhallers will be forced to advertise whatever the Won wants them to advertise for a preset price. We may want to keep hotair, but hotair won’t want to keep us….*hold me….I skeered…*

I get these manuals with each computer(have a lap top too)and never, ever bother to read them because I do not understand most of it. I tried at first and knew I was in above my head. I’m sorry but I’m not a big fan of the new look…..it’s starting to look like the other Salem sites – too busy, cluttered and not right…anyways thats my two cents.

flash044 on April 30, 2010 at 2:55 AM

No offense, but the new design is just bad. The menu at the top is too small and shoved together, the text area looks just odd, the logo doesn’t click-through…it’s messy.

And I count no fewer than six advertisements that end up taking precedent over navigability and cleanliness.

In other words, it’s a Townhall site for sure now. Terribly disappointed.

amerpundit on April 30, 2010 at 3:08 AM

Honestly, it’s less professional than the original. The last one looked custom designed, neat, and clean-cut. This one could be a tech-themed, publicly-available WordPress template.
