Video: The obligatory “Tim James ‘we speak English’” ad

posted at 10:11 pm on April 28, 2010 by Allahpundit

Lefties have been kicking this around for a week purely for the kitsch factor, but Dave Weigel of WaPo’s “Those Darned Wingnuts” beat warns them that they’re creating a monster:

It’s a pattern I’ve gotten very, very used to. A conservative Republican issues a new ad, or some clip from the campaign trail goes viral. Democrats and liberals make fun of it. Meanwhile, the video becomes incredibly popular and the candidate laughs all the way to the polls.

How “incredibly popular” has it become? Check out the view totals for yourself. Not bad for a GOP gubernatorial candidate from Alabama. The “English only” standard would be reason enough for liberals to sneer at it, but it’s the poorly acted Shatneresque three-second pause at the end before the kicker that’s made it viral gold. It’s no quirk, either: Check out the second clip and you’ll see that he’s honed it to a damn-near science. Exit question: Tim James 2012?

Nothing shocking or concerning. What is the problem?

This ad suggests that “Tim James” has balls of steel.

hmmm interesting it got picked up – on my own little 570am as well –
I doubt though he is talking about language, I think it’s about citizenship. When it was published that 47% of Americans (?) pay no income tax, but in reality get a check, that’s what I think it is about.

When one doesn’t value their birthright, and pay for the privilege of being an American, the greatest Country on Earth, they don’t hold it as dear as those who do.

When those in power continue to apologize for being a Super power, and those of us in Alabama that not only work hard and appreciate it, want our standing in the world, in commerce and in helping mankind, we get the message.

And..it’s not about language.

changer1701 on April 28, 2010 at 10:21 PM

Moving violations and numerous lawsuits against employers for “accidents” by “workers” IS a big deal, in Alabama and anywhere else.

If a person can’t read roadsigns and workplace signs and understand directions and instructions given to them (the switch that reads “off” means that’s where you turn off the saw before you try to oil it), then it’s a big, very big, problem for any locale. Including Alabama.

Alabama’s just a straight-talking place. They’re what I’d call “cutting through the bull” with this campaign (speak English or don’t move here).

Erikimmigrant on April 28, 2010 at 10:39 PM

That’s what’s always bugged me. There are, what? 4-5,000 living languages spoken around the globe? It’s not logistically possible to print up & administer that many different exams, but if you limit the number of non-english languages you’re going to try to accommodate to anything below that number, you are showing preference to just a favored few foreign speakers and discriminating against the rest (as was the case with you.) So you can make the argument that restricting exams to english only is actually not only the most reasonable, but the most equitable option as well.

YYZ on April 28, 2010 at 11:12 PM

Again, it’s a question of will.

Many today don’t WANT to learn English and refuse to do so BECAUSE they are not required to do so.

The world has access to all the tapes and DVDs and CDs and books that the rest of us do. If I can learn Italian by tapes and a handbook, then “they” can learn English.

It’s just a case of deciding to do it, or, refusing to do it.

Requiring a legal immigrant to understand and be able to demonstrate basic understanding of the use of English remains a requirement. It’s mostly the illegal population who refuses to do so, even when it’s easy. OR it’s the “relatives” the legal ones bring in later by chain migration who don’t strive to qualify for legal immigration otherwise (a lot of needy elderly who then go on to live by taxpayer support here in the U.S. and never attempt to learn so much as conversational English).

The only things that make it less than perfect are (1) the rump liberal faction that loves to relive George Wallace and Bull Connor on a daily basis so they can self-flagellate themselves and get ‘penance’ for the sins of their ancestors; and (2) the leeches who live off of/swindle state government and the school systems (what I call “institutional Democrats”).
