Matthews: Palin aspiring to be “a professional ignorant”
posted at 3:49 pm on April 28, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
Don’t be silly, Chris. Sarah Palin isn’t looking for a gig on MS-NBC’s prime time! Let’s put aside the point Noel Sheppard makes about Matthews using the grammatically horrid phrase “a political ignorant” after praising himself as someone who constantly seeks knowledge. Let’s instead look at the journalistic standards at MS-NBC for political argumentation, as Matthews reports that Sarah Palin takes great joy in ignorance by quoting that rock-solid source … “somebody alludes to”:
Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy
CHRIS MATTHEWS,HOST: Maybe I can push your button with this one, Cynthia, my pal. It doesn`t bother you that she`s making zillions of dollars. But how about this, as someone who trained yourself, like I did, to learn some things, who gets up every day and tries to know something before they talk. Here she is saying she has — somebody alludes to her sheer joy that she gets out of not knowing anything.
I really think, not that she`s unintelligent, but she`s campaigning almost for the role of a professional ignorant, like, “I don`t know anything, therefore I should be listened to.” She seems to aspire to knowing even less. It`s a weird advantage that she claims that if I`m really ignorant, then you should really listen to me, because I`m not like one of those intellectuals back east. It`s a strange ambition. I think she`s pursuing it effectively.
CYNTHIA TUCKER, ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION: Well, I don`t think she would pursue that effectively as a presidential candidate, Chris. That`s where Ken and I differ. It is fine if she wants to go out and make a lot of money giving speeches. I think this idea of winging it, of not knowing anything about foreign policy, knowing very little about domestic policy, would not serve her any better in a presidential run than it served her when she was McCain`s running mate.
I don`t think the vast majority of voters respect that or want to see that in candidates. It`s fine in Palin world. She has a small constituency of very enthusiastic supporters. But the majority of voters, including the majority of Republican voters, expect their candidates to actually know something about policy.
Well, as long as somebody alludes to it, it must be true! Palin must wake up in the mornings in complete bliss over the idea that she doesn’t have to talk about policy at all. Except, of course, that Palin does — whether it’s energy policy, health-care reform, or even nuclear policy, Palin not only doesn’t avoid it but issues almost daily communiques on substantive policy from her platform on Facebook. In fact, her speech at the SRLC this month spoke almost entirely to policy, including Afghanistan and the foreign policy bungling of the White House, when many expected her to focus more on politics and the integration (or lack thereof) of the Tea Party and Republicans.
Certainly, one can disagree with Palin on policy, or demand deeper explanations. But the notion that Palin doesn’t address policy at all is an argument that qualifies someone as a “political ignorant” … but it’s not Sarah Palin.

What is so funny here is that Chris Matthews is so politically irrelevant today that the only way he can get noticed is to talk about those that are relevant; i.e., former Gov. Sarah Palin!

professional ignorant pretty well describes Matthews at this point, and he’s just jealous he doesn’t have the same income stream for his blundering remarks, assuming there aint giant kickbacks on a per “tingle” basis from the White House
robertb on April 28, 2010 at 3:55 PM
This desperate narrative by the drive-bys is becoming almost comical. The woman posts on Facebook several times a week. She’s constantly giving speeches, many of which are carried live on every major news network and C-SPAN. She appears regularly on FoxNews offering political commentary.
Yet apparently none of this has registered with the media. I realize that one of the Alinsky rules they swear by is to constantly ridicule the opposition. But we live in the era of YouTube, cable news, and the blogosphere. It’s pretty easy for the layperson to figure out that she does in fact have very specific positions on the issues and she articulates them with regularity. If she runs for President and actually wins the nomination, do they really believe the “she’s an idiot, she doesn’t talk about issues, she tanked the Couric interview” constant drumbeat is actually gonna work?

Or Sarah Palin ripping this dimbulb Chris tingles a new one and him floored he got beatup by a “snowbilly”.

the_nile on April 28, 2010 at 3:56 PM
Frankly I think it’s time that bloggers to just stop reporting on Tingles.
It’s clear that these kinds of irrational and nonsensical which are made on a regular basis are a continued ploy to raise the ire of conservatives and get some free buzz in the blogosphere, in the hopes that that will translate into ratings for the virtually non-existent MSNBC.
Why help the lad out? It’s not like anything he says is of any real importance anyway.

ROFLMAO!!!
Palin may be aspiring to be “a professional ignorant”, although I doubt it, but Christie Matthews has achieved it magna cum laude with honors.
MB4 on April 28, 2010 at 3:58 PM
So sad. Matthews has been reduced to saying something outrageous about Palin, The Tea Party et al every week or so just to get someone, anyone to pay attention to him.
I hope HA is on his Christmas card list.
RadClown on April 28, 2010 at 3:58 PM
Yeah, but don’t try that with Tim Pawlenty, because know matter what he says we all know he’s really conservative, if only people would pay attention.

Matthews. As a circle of light increases, so does the area of darkness around it.
Matthews is surrounded by a huge darkness as a pseudo intellectual dumb ass too stupid to pour pi$$ out of a boot with instructions on the heel.
Matthews would starve to death in the woods. At least palin would thrive. Who is the most equiped one of those two. First time matthews saw a snake, he would squeel like a little girl.

ted c on April 28, 2010 at 4:01 PM
It’s getting to the point where these MS-NBC dolts use Palin as they do Rush…to get ratings. No one cares about anything else they have to blather on about. So they mention Palin and Rush and their viewership number rockets to the high 20s.

A-fricking-MEN!!!!
Even the Palin fanatics on HotAir seem to glory in her ordinaryness (sp?) and her mediocrity when it comes to accomplishment and intelligence.
What is the most appalling, in my view, are the men, as shown by some of our own HotAir posters, who comment on her attractiveness. I mean, I guess that’s fine…but we conservative republicans admire accomplishment, grit, intelligence, etc. Not purdy looks…and not tawkin like da rest of us commun folk and not bein a smarty pants talking all high falutin like that thar Romney feller.
She makes some people excited because they like her little sound bites but as the polls show, and as George Will has recently opined, she has NO CHANCE IN HELL of ever becoming a serious national candidate. I mean, unless she becomes very serious about learning things…like geography, economics, monetary and fiscal policy, international relations…you know stuff like that.
Its not enough to make up corny crap like “lamestream media” and say “we support the our troops fighing for our freedom over in Aghanistan”.

Won’t bother watching, but it’s par for the course w/ Mr Tingles. It seems like the worse his idol Obama is doing, the more his weird obsession w/ Palin increases. Even when she is not in the news that day, he has to jam a topic about her into his show and bring in some idiot like Tucker to slam her.
Thanks for a fair Palin post Ed…. I think even your counterpart would agree.

Speaking of MSDNC and Palin, does anyone know if she’s ever done a single interview with them or NBC since being picked by McCain? Seriously, I’m racking my brain and I can’t recall any sitdown with Matt Lauer or Brian Williams. And no, Andrea Mitchell weaseling her way in at the book tourstop does not count.
Doughboy on April 28, 2010 at 4:06 PM
Coming from the “professional ignorant” Matthews, it takes one to know one.
An interesting point was made on the Fred Thompson Show about Obama’s anti-Christian media labeling Palin’s religious experience as both radical and dangerous, while labeling Obama’s 20 years’ with the “Rev.” Wright as mainstream and the norm.

Yawn. Honestly I am tired of hearing from and hearing about Sarah Palin. I have nothing against her and I hope she makes a ton of money. I find the vitriol directed against her hypocritical, nonsensical, vile etc. But it is the same ole same ole from both sides since she dared to be McCain’s running mate. If the people she addresses want to hear what she has to say then let them hear. If hey want to read her Facebook page, then let them. How hard is that? I just find the incessant and repetitive discussion about Palin and her detractors and what each said on a given day to be boring now because neither side will stop and neither side will “win”.
HawaiiLwyr on April 28, 2010 at 4:12 PM
Thanks for that hard-hitting analysis, Spit McGee. You and Cynthia Tucker sure saved me alot of heartache–and money. I’ll bet you have a very compliant and subservient wife that does everything you tell her to do. You must be afraid of women that assert themselves and don’t allow others, especially men, to run roughshod over them. As long as your womenfolk “know their place” and follow your orders you are secure and happy. What a shallow and small life you lead.

Fixing a mess is always harder than making one.

If Palin is not “a superstar” as you put then I don’t know who is. You go to war with the army you got and the generals at hand.
This looking for a mythical x candidate, when there is already someone taking it to Obama as well as the rest of the Democrat operation, is to me a waste of time and effort and likely to end in heartache and more Obama.

Don’t think you can ever find a Teflon pristine Republican that will make the media/Left happy.
Sharr on April 28, 2010 at 4:30 PM
She told the Tea Party convention that she didn’t know any more than the next person, and I know I criticized her for that but I have never heard her boast of knowing less! Even that was an expression of modesty, not know-nothing aggression. She should however be mindful that much as she may champion the middle class, her position in society is increasingly and probably unavoidably elite – just as an objective matter. So I don’t recommend excessive humility.
