CNBC: Obama’s a bully

posted at 10:55 am on April 28, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Maybe Barack Obama just hasn’t adjusted yet to life as an executive, as compared to that of a campaigner.  After fifteen months, though, CNBC’s Media & Technology Editor has tired of giving Obama the benefit of the doubt.  In a lengthy essay from two days ago, Dennis Kneale calls Obama a “bully” and compares him to Richard Nixon for communication skills:

Obama’s latest broadside came over the weekend, when he vehemently criticized the state of Arizona and its (Republican) governor for passing a tough new law on illegal immigration.

The President called the measure “misguided” and all but labeled it un-American. He even ordered the Department of Justice, before the ink on this bill-signing has even dried, to examine the civil-rights “implications” of the new law. Seems like the courts and rights groups could handle that once any problem actually emerges.

Can you remember any other modern President, wagging a finger from on high, so directly and bitterly criticizing a new law passed by any state?

Kneale doesn’t support Arizona’s new immigration-enforcement law; in fact, he says he “hates it.” However, that kind of a response from a President hardly helps, and it ignores the Presidents’ role in a federal republic:

This is hubris at best and ignorance of the Constitution at worst. The U.S. was founded in part on the precept of states’ rights as an important counterweight to a rapacious federal government. Thus a President must step softly here, questioning gently but avoiding rancor and browbeating.

Nor is it the first time that we’ve seen “Bam the Bully,” as Kneale calls Obama. His excoriation of the Supreme Court during the State of the Union speech shocked those at its breach of decorum, although Obama’s defenders predictably blamed Samuel Alito for having the temerity to indulge a normal human reaction to it. Obama has all but demanded that Wall Street firms shut up while Congress debates financial regulation reform, despite Congress’ ineptitude at it over the past twelve years and the collapse they caused with their blundering interventions. Obama also demanded that Republicans shut up last year, a line that Obama dropped shortly afterward.

One group gets to keep talking, though, as Kneale observes:

Similarly, President Obama maligns Wall Street for trying to have a say in financial reform and lobbying for its interests, though this input is a vital ingredient in any democratic process. Yet Obama doesn’t criticize giant unions like the AFL-CIO and the SEIU when they similarly lobby on fin-reg.

Why? Because the unions agree with him. Even though Wall Street has a far more legitimate claim to get involved in this debate than do the unions, which represent only 7% of the private work force and essentially should have no dog in this fight at all.

It’s not just because they agree with Obama.  It’s because they fund the Democratic Party.  Money talks, even especially in the Obama administration.  That’s why the White House welcomes union input on financial regulation and disdains that of Wall Street, and why the bankrupt unions have a seat on the new federal deficit commission with retiring SEIU chief Andy Stern — who will leave his union swimming in red ink.

Obama offers a bully pulpit, indeed … in the most literal sense possible, and one deployed on behalf of his closest contributors.

IntheNet on April 28, 2010 at 11:02 AM

It would have been a much better article if he hadn’t violated Godwins law:

The new state law itself is disturbing, even detestable, and I don’t like it. It forces immigrants to carry with them proof of their legal status and lets cops demand to see the “papers” of anyone (read: any foreign-looking person) to make sure he didn’t sneak into the country. It smacks of Nazis in the Jewish ghetto in Poland.

Dennis has also been a big Obamanomics pumper since Obama got into office. I’ll bet if you asked him, he would gladly vote for Obama again.

thomasaur on April 28, 2010 at 11:12 AM

He’s rationalized too often. I am convinced that people vote instinctively. But they do have good instincts, and his knee-jerk racial divisive remarks are a huge problem PR-wise.

He really hasn’t shed his community organizer on behalf of one race only training.

He simply isn’t operating out of a presidential framework. He reacts, backs off, and then confuses everyone, including his base.

Most people don’t have time for that nonsense nor care to analyze it. They just get a gut feel for what’s really going on, and they have his number.

The next election, he really will be the “community organizer” against….whomever. Palin has managed to make that label stick, but not without his explicit help. *haha

AnninCA on April 28, 2010 at 11:12 AM

Maybe Barack Obama just hasn’t adjusted yet to life as an executive

That’s because he’s never before been the executive of anything, has never managed any business, and has minimal experience in any private enterprise.

He was a Chicago “organizer.” That is, someone whose purpose is to bully others.

ohiobabe on April 28, 2010 at 11:16 AM

Even someone who is smart needs training. I don’t doubt Obama is a bright guy. However, he is not superman, either. He’s the result of his own training and habits, just as everyone else is.

His background was truly weak, much weaker than Palin’s in truth. That is why the Dems unleashed on her. To have a woman overshadow their “pet” candidate was simply unacceptable! LOL*

I’m pleased to see she’s turning the tables. She just keeps nailing him. About the only thing she’s had to drop is the Ayers comment, which probably was a bit over-the-top.

Every other remark she made about him has proven true, through the only real standard that counts…his actions.

“Bullying” is defined as a form of aggression in which one or more students physically and/or psychologically (and more recently, sexually) harass another student repeatedly over a period of time. Typically, the action is unprovoked and the bully is perceived as stronger than the victim (Hazier, Hoover, & Oliver, 1992; Olweus, 1991a).

Evidence suggests that bullying is “intergenerational” and that a bully at school is a victim at home (Floyd, 1985; Greenbaum, 1988). Bullies come from homes where parents: (a) prefer physical means of discipline (authoritarian); (b) are sometimes hostile and rejecting; (c) are described as both hostile and permissive (inconsistent parenting/little supervision); (d) have poor problem-solving skills; and (e) teach their children to strike back at the least provocation (Floyd, 1985; Greenbaum, 1988; Loeber & Dishion, 1984). Olweus (1991a) reports that bullies are often characterized by impulsivity, a strong need to dominate others, and have little empathy with victims. However, he found no indications that bullies are anxious, insecure, or lack self-esteem. Perhaps this is the case because bullies report that they “like” being a bully and perceive their actions as justified (Greenbaum,1988). They are reinforced for their actions through both positive reinforcement (goal attainment) and negative reinforcement (removal of threat) paradigms. Bullying is all about control. When they are in control bullies feel more secure and less anxious. Unfortunately, that security is at the expense of their victims. In general, bullies can be described as having aggressive behavior profiles combined with physical strength (Olweus, 1991b). Aggressive boys are confident of achieving success through their aggression, are unaffected by the possibility of inflicting pain and suffering, and process information about victims in a rigid and automatic fashion (Perry, Kusel, & Perry, 1988). Bullies believe that they pick on their victim because they are provoked or because they do not like the victim. When asked how they feel when they bullied other children, the most common responses were that they felt good/happy or that they felt mad or angry (Boulton & Underwood, 1992).

I think the comment is just saying what most everyone is thinking.

First, it was the Clintons. OK, that probably got a clap from conservatives. But, in fact, it was horridly unfair and without a shred of legitimacy. It was wrong. It divided people instantly.

Second, it was the demeaning of voters in swing states. Didn’t go for him? His hit people went out and fingered everyone as trailer trash idiots.

Third, it was fast reactions to every single racial situation presented so far, with his own 1960′s version prevailing in every single instance.

Now, it’s trying to divide Hispanics. You don’t think this law is mostly about protecting the border towns? Think again. It’s the escalating violence in those towns, predominantly Hispanic, that triggered this law. Rightfully so. AZ said No to the drug cartels, frankly. They are going to fight back, on behalf of those communities. He failed to acknowledge the actual impact of what’s going on within the Hispanic communities.

Again, I think people instinctively get this. That’s the reason for the polls showing huge support for this law in AZ, and I see that Brewer’s approval rating shot up, unless Rasmussen is pulling a bad poll moment.

In univariate logistic regression analysis, frequent bullying-only status predicted antisocial personality, substance abuse, and depressive and anxiety disorders; frequent victimization-only status predicted anxiety disorder, whereas frequent bully-victim status predicted antisocial personality and anxiety disorder. When controlled against the effects of parental education level and parent and teacher reports of emotional and behavioral symptoms by using Rutter scales, frequent victimization-only status predicted anxiety disorders, and frequent bullying-only predicted antisocial personality disorder, whereas frequent bully-victimization predicted both anxiety and antisocial personality disorder. Information about frequent bullying and victimization as primary screening for children at risk identified 28% of those with a psychiatric disorder 10 to 15 years later.

CONCLUSIONS. Both bullying and victimization during early school years are public health signs that identify boys who are at risk of suffering psychiatric disorders in early adulthood. The school health and educational system has a central role to play in detecting these boys at risk.

Reagan granting amnesty in the 1980′s was letting the camel’s nose under the tent. It created demand and reward for more illegal immigration.

That was the most stupid thing Reagan ever did. Strict immigration enforcement with harsh penalties is clearly what is needed. All the hispanic protests here now is a disgrace to legal immigrants and a clear demonstation of how disastrous the lack of enforcement was and is.

Now the fools in Washington are about to make the problem perminent. What fools we all are. The effects will hamstring the USA for decades to come once they learn to vote themselves all the money in the treasury.

AnninCA on April 28, 2010 at 11:41 AM

clinical observations are not conspiracy. You have a theory (he’s a bully), you have evidence (research about what bullies do), and you jive it with his behavior (substance usage, “striking back”, bullying SCOTUS) and the theory is upheld somewhat in some regards. He is a workplace bully–the press, the American people, his strawmen are lying scattered on the floor, Republicans, TEa Partiers, Rush Limbaugh, need I continue….?

President Temper-Tantrum needs a good spanking.

Not metaphorically either.

fogw on April 28, 2010 at 11:08 AM

The unspanked baby has ‘evolved’ into a narcissistic and arrogant teenager, in need for love. The entire country, and a good chunck of the fooled world, will have to suffer.

Hordes of psychologists/psychiatrists can’t solve this one. The likes of him never were, nor will ever walk the Earth.

The fools are us, those who voted for him, and those of us who pay for his lavish existence, while being destroyed.

Schadenfreude on April 28, 2010 at 11:54 AM

With every raise of the chin, with every look down the nose, with every pointing of the finger this man oozes arrogance from every pore – I’m sick of him and his “I know better than the American people” attitude. It is shameful that he makes inflammatory comments and doesn’t understand why he must back off those comments later. He is an embarrasement to the US. Did I mention that I’m sick of him?

AusTex girl on April 28, 2010 at 11:54 AM

He’s not a bully. He’s a dictator wannabe who is jumping the gun on his authority.

Daggett on April 28, 2010 at 11:05 AM

Dead on.

sisterchristian on April 28, 2010 at 11:54 AM

This is hubris at best and ignorance wilful defiance of the Constitution at worst.

Free Blago! Impeach Obama! Remember in November! Make a clean sweep of every Communist Democrat in every local, state, and federal office! If we don’t purge them we are going to be a bananna republic with Hugo Obama running the show!

Marco on April 28, 2010 at 12:03 PM

“I’m not sure I buy that one.

They weren’t pushed out of agricultural jobs over wages, for example.

AnninCA on April 28, 2010 at 11:43 AM”

Say what you mean, Ann. Be brave.

LtE126 on April 28, 2010 at 12:03 PM

Crying about Obama the bully is for sissy Democrats who are experiencing some buyer’s remorse but who will vote for hm again anyway because they don’t have the guts or the brains to do otherwirse.
Common sense conservatives and tea partiers know this guy is far worse than a mere bully.

CNBC: Obama’s a bully

Welcome to the real world! Glad you could join us

cmsinaz on April 28, 2010 at 12:05 PM

Anyone surprised that Pinnochio would question the “rights” of a sovereign state of these formerly United States to make and enforce their own laws after this puppet sicked the liberal dogs of war on a sitting Governor of a sovereign state with no regard as to what that would do to said state or her people is either a slow learner or dazzled by the Hopey Dopey Liar.

Some of us have known for a long time this guy is a marxist wannabee, manipulated by anti-American marxists and an empty suited liar who will do whatever he needs to do to bring America to her knees.

dhunter on April 28, 2010 at 12:05 PM

The media is so precious — they’re just now figuring out he’s a bully.

All you had to do was read either of the TWO books that we wrote about himself before he reached the age of 45 and you’d learn everything you need to know about this idiosyncratic sycophant. The title of the first one says it all, “Dreams from My Father; A Story of Race and Inheritance.” Cover to cover it smacks of resentment and entitlement.

Nuff said.

wordsmithy2009 on April 28, 2010 at 12:07 PM

What an insult to Nixon.

elderberry on April 28, 2010 at 11:02 AM

I like that one, “elderberry.”

I was no major fan of Nixon, but he was a brilliant man and did get some good work done as president.

William2006 on April 28, 2010 at 12:08 PM

Never heard of Dennis Kneale before. He works at CNBC? Really? Wow. He sounds like a Founding Father or a conservative/libertarian. Obviously Kneale is a Klansman, however. He uttered the code words of all Klansmen/bigots/Neo-Confederates: “States Rights”. This is always a give away. Still, how amazing that a closeted Klansman got a job at CNBC. If the Klan has infiltrated CNBC they must be everywhere else too. Time for a HUAC investigation of CNBC, Hollywood etc.

JimP on April 28, 2010 at 12:08 PM

He will continue to bully until he faces some push-back. When that starts Katy bar the door.

thomasaur on April 28, 2010 at 11:12 AM

Katy will pay for the locksmith at 1600.

katy the mean old lady on April 28, 2010 at 12:09 PM

The best way to deal with someone who thinks he’s a bully is to knock him on his ass.

Barrack Hussein Obama is NOT the lawful president of the United States:

Wow, censorship. I miss CQ.

LtE126 on April 28, 2010 at 12:13 PM

The really maddening thing is that historically, leaders who choose the “strong-man” model of government usually walk away into peaceful retirement, and the People they have Helped erect statues and monuments to them.

Dammit that’s unfair!

To the tune of the Commitments “Chain Of Fools”, I suggest the following chant for His Eminence: Shame Shame, Shaammee . . .
