Big New York magazine cover story on Palin’s earnings surprisingly dull

posted at 8:26 pm on April 26, 2010 by Allahpundit

So frantic were the Conservatives 4 Palin people about this that not only did they write a lengthy reply to the story today, they actually pushed a post out yesterday — before the article was published — warning that it would be a hit piece and accusing the author, Gabriel Sherman, of “effectively stalking” Palin by attending some of her rallies. Read the profile yourself and you’ll see it’s much ado about nothing. The big revelation? She was worried about money, knew she could make a ton, realized that her last two years as governor would be nothing but gridlock and legal bills, so she made her move. Oh, and it turns out she’s really good at marketing herself, in case you hadn’t heard. Dive in and you’ll find (a) the obligatory cultural criticism of What Palin Means…

From Buffalo Bill to the Marlboro Man, the self-reliant frontiersman has always been an image with mass appeal. Palin has managed to graft this rugged Western myth onto a beauty-pageant face and a counterpunching, don’t-tread-on-me verbal style—a new kind of character, and a remarkably compelling one.

(b) …the patented left-wing man-among-the-apes gawking at grassroots conservatives…

Fans jockeyed to get their photo taken with Joe the Plumber, who was posing in his trademark Carhartt jacket and wraparound Oakleys. “Right on, brother!” he said. “I’ve been to over 140 tea parties,” he told me. “I do my own events, I schedule my own stuff. It’s just me.”

I walked a little farther into the crowd and met Kevin Unck, an unemployed truck driver from northern Utah who was selling T-shirts out of the trunk of his faded blue Ford Taurus. Unck said he used his last unemployment check along with a loan from his girlfriend to come up with $1,600 to print up 300 T-shirts that proclaimed OBAMA: ONE BIG ASS MISTAKE, AMERICA I asked Unck what bothered him most about Obama. “I think he’s a communist, plain and simple as that,” he said. “I’m fearful for the country.” Unck said he didn’t expect to make much money selling T-shirts, but it gave him an excuse to come see Palin.

(c) …and the exciting “let’s see if Levi Johnston will dish anything today” grand finale:

Johnston says he’s working on a memoir that would air the true story of the Palin household. “They’re never around each other,” Johnston says of Sarah and Todd. “It’s like they hate each other but they don’t want anyone to know it. I think they were gonna get a divorce, but then they were like, ‘Let’s not prove them right.’ I’ve never seen them sleep in the same room, he’s always on this little recliner. For years, they never really talked.” (This summer, Palin threw cold water on the divorce rumors, telling Politico that the speculation was “made up.”)

“I know everything there is to know about her,” Johnston adds. “She’s so fake. But she’s so good at it, too. She’s amazing at it. If I didn’t know it, I wouldn’t know the difference. She’s gifted. She could do movies because she’s so gifted.”

Poor Dave Weigel was so bereft of juicy tidbits from the piece for his “Those Darned Wingnuts” beat at WaPo that he was forced to highlight the fact that she writes her own Facebook posts and how she fits into TLC’s programming strategy. I’ll let you take it from there.

Interesting part of article says Palin said ” I want to be President” many years ago before she was governor. May explain why she would do the VP when her family was going through a teenage pregnancy.

I honesty think she would’ve finished off her term if some of the national spotlight was off her once she returned from the campaign.

I know it’s like shooting fish in a barrel (probably easier), but:

I’ve never seen them sleep in the same room,

Since when did Levi become an expert on the Palin’s sleeping arrangements?

For years, they never really talked.

How long did he live the Palins? “years”?

Was he around each one all the time so that he could make this statement?

“I know everything there is to know about her

Not a hint of hyperbole there, huh?

The sad thing is that the MSM will eat up his memoir and propagate every lame thing he says.

And yet they still won’t investigate Obama’s long form COLB, his grades in college and anything he ever published.

LurkerDood on April 26, 2010 at 8:47 PM

I actually think Palin enjoys taking on the media. Yesterday she attended the Diamondbacks game with Arizona Governor Jan Brewer (two days after Brewer signed Bill 1070).

http://governorpalin4president.blogspot.com/2010/04/photo-1-by-paul-connors-ap-photo.html

Sarah certainly doesn’t back away controversy. Mitt, on the other hand, is currently denying that he and Jan Brewer are in the same party.

bw222 on April 26, 2010 at 8:48 PM

How many pages in the story? I didn’t make it through page one. Had the media not become obsessed with Palin, she would have been just another Governor of Alaska, long forgotten, just like Dan Quayle from Indiana.

No kidding. Levi would have us believe the attraction between the two is strictly physical. Yet why is Todd accompanying her on some of her campaign….errrr, speaking engagements and why did the family take a vacation together a few months ago(remember Visor-gate?)?

Not to mention that with him working on the North Slope for all those years, of course the two would’ve spent a lot of time apart.

Hmmm. This article has caused a minor bit of consternation on Leftoid land, because the “Stupid” meme is so dominant over there.

Sarah was an hour or four hours away from home depending if she was in her Juneau office or Anchorage Office. Todd was working on the oil fields so they didn’t see much of each other but that doesn’t mean they didn’t love each other… They made it their mission to deciate time to themselves when they were both at home.

“I mean, we’re still fairly young and we’ve got kids going into college. Some governors and their spouses, I’m sure, are independently wealthy, but we’re not one of those couples. So we have to watch out for our kids’ future,” Mr. Palin said.

Chrisin206 on April 26, 2010 at 10:31 PM

The piece doesn’t seem that bad. It basically admits that Palin quit because leftards were drowning her in legal bills. She should have just clearly stated that when she had to resign instead of throwing a weird campaign rally/party for her speech.

Speedwagon82 on April 26, 2010 at 10:33 PM

That’s funny, because the day she announced the resignation, I heard her say that very thing.

Brian1972 on April 26, 2010 at 10:36 PM

I actually think Palin enjoys taking on the media. Yesterday she attended the Diamondbacks game with Arizona Governor Jan Brewer (two days after Brewer signed Bill 1070).

Sarah certainly doesn’t back away controversy. Mitt, on the other hand, is currently denying that he and Jan Brewer are in the same party.

bw222 on April 26, 2010 at 8:48 PM

Thanks for posting that link bw222.

As for Levi….you know it’s only a matter of time until he writes/says that he and Palin had *** in the woods with a Moose, or that he’s the Father of Piper or that he is in fact that he and Andrew Sullivan are the father of Trig.

All of this carefully coreographed to coincide with her decision in early 2011 if she will run in 2012.

You think ANYTHING is crazy anymore after living thru the BHO assault the last 15 months?

But every imbecillic lib heard her say “I can see Russia from my house.”

Lanceman on April 26, 2010 at 10:39 PM

I’ve never seen them sleep in the same room,

With five kids I’d say they did a little more than just sleep in the same room. What a maroon.

Brian1972 on April 26, 2010 at 10:44 PM

Yes. They’re called ‘the elite’.
Think Lenin and the politburo.

They don’t associate with plebiscites.
Think the Clintons’ buying a house in the whitest, most affluent county in New York.

Lanceman on April 26, 2010 at 10:57 PM

New York Magazine sucks. Back in the day, when Felker and Glazer started it, the mag was pretty cool. It set publication-graphics trends and actually featured stories that native New Yorkers could appreciate. Now it’s just another liberal-bias, piece of shit that serves the New York Housewives and social x-rays.

PC14 on April 26, 2010 at 11:24 PM

Most of its readers are in Manhattan, which is still reliably liberal.

YYZ on April 26, 2010 at 11:44 PM

“patented left-wing man-among-the-apes”

That is exactly the kind of snide attitude AP projects here sometimes.

RobCon on April 26, 2010 at 11:52 PM

The big bombshell from Levi will be that Trig is his son and then you will have the media demanding DNA testing…

LurkerDood on April 26, 2010 at 8:57 PM

OMG! You are aware that fruiter Sullivan lurks here, right?

platypus on April 26, 2010 at 11:58 PM

I’m happy there’s a C4P. But for that site there would be nowhere to go to read the truth about Sarah. Glad they got out in front of this nonsense.

As for Levi’s assertion that Todd and Sarah hate each other . . . you know, if I had just made $12 million in the last year, and my presence was constantly in demand in cities far from home, and I couldn’t stand the site of my husband — I don’t think I’d be carting him around with me to all of these stump speeches and rallies and court cases. And I doubt he’d want to come with me either.

Levi is a little punk. How long has he been threatening to spill the goods on Sarah now? A year? Get over it, tool. No one believes your lying azz.

Wow, Piper has really grown a bunch since the last time I saw pictures of her! She’s looking more like her mama everyday.

NoLeftTurn on April 27, 2010 at 12:07 AM

Interesting that they chose to logo-ize Palin using an ersatz-Ford logo — the logo of the last American car company untainted by the Government.

unclesmrgol on April 27, 2010 at 1:04 AM

For someone so dumb, clueless, stupid, vapid, empty-headed, and uneducated, Palin is sure doing well.
Sounds like some uber-educated rich boys are envious.

lonestar1 on April 27, 2010 at 1:12 AM

Gosh. Todd was so a handsome All American MALE.

Sarah???? I envy her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Idiot Levi!!!!!!! Idiot!

SARAH PALIN ROCKS 2012!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TheAlamos on April 27, 2010 at 3:54 AM

Todd’s always smiling. I wonder why?
bw222@9:03

Well if I was sleeping with his wife I’d have a grin that an entire team of Beverly Hills plastic surgeons couldn’t remove.

NY Mag is purely mindless fluff about food, fads and clothes. No one of any consequence reads it.

Urban Infidel on April 27, 2010 at 6:34 AM

The article was well worth it to Sarah, in my opinion. Confirming that she writes her own articles does a LOT for her, since it defies the “bimbo” element.

The actual article had nothing new, repeated some already-debunked stuff, and relied upon Father of the Year, Levi, for juicy junk stuff. It was funny. At least, she had the decency to include that bit of nonsense in the final paragraphs.

AnninCA on April 27, 2010 at 7:42 AM

C4P guidelines for dealing with critics

Disagree with her politics and/or positions but treat her with respect = a civilised debate

Disrespect her and lie/distort = we’ll rip your b–ls off…

Seems perfectly reasonable to me….

callingallcomets on April 27, 2010 at 8:26 AM

Who’s going to write the book for Levi? He surely won’t be able to do himself. How long was he actually with the Palin’s to glean all this intimate knowledge. I’m surprised he’s still in the spotlight. He must still have some marginal effect left.

Kissmygrits on April 27, 2010 at 9:35 AM

you’ll see it’s much ado about nothing.

Allah -If I had as much disdain for Palin as you seem to have, I’d think it was nothing also.

Maybe Allahpundit has been going to the well too often.

bw222 on April 26, 2010 at 10:09 PM

This is perhaps the apocolypse we should have been worried about. AP starts so many Palin threads that even the trolls get tired of repeating their standard personal attacks. Without those gratuitous snarks Palin supporters don’t feel compelled to defend her. End result – decrease in traffic – unintended consequences I guess. /
