Pentagon disinvites Franklin Graham from prayer service over Islam comments

posted at 8:56 pm on April 22, 2010 by Allahpundit

The Pentagon never invited him in the first place — a prayer task force that partners with the chaplain’s office for the National Day of Prayer event did — but either way, the boot has now duly been given. I get why a military that includes members of all faiths might not want a guy who’s pronounced Islam “evil” speaking at one of their semi-official functions. What I don’t get is where this sudden sense of propriety comes from, since of course this is the same military that was content to look the other way while jihadist fanatic Nidal Hasan ranted openly to colleagues about why infidels should be beheaded. Apparently, that sort of nuance can get a man promoted to major these days.

Plus, needless to say, now that goofing on Mohammed is officially verboten on certain American television networks, no one’s much in the mood for another story about “sensitivities.”

Earlier Thursday, Graham stuck by his remarks about Islam, including that Muslims are “enslaved” by their religion,

Franklin, the son of famed evangelist Billy Graham, told Fox News that he loves Muslim people and wants them to know that God loves them, even if they can be saved only through Jesus Christ…

After the 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, Graham said Islam “is a very evil and wicked religion.” In a later op-ed piece in The Wall Street Journal, Graham wrote that he did not believe Muslims were evil because of their faith, but “as a minister … I believe it is my responsibility to speak out against the terrible deeds that are committed as a result of Islamic teaching.”

It’s all about tolerance, right? Not quite:

The Military Religious Freedom Foundation raised the objection to the appearance, citing Graham’s past remarks about Islam, in a letter sent Monday to Defense Secretary Robert Gates.

Mikey Weinstein, president of the foundation, said the invitation offended Muslim employees at the Pentagon because Graham never retracted or apologized for his description of Islam as evil. Weinstein said the invitation would endanger American troops by stirring up Muslim extremists.

South Park redux: Silence the critic or risk being bombed. “Tolerance” is nothing but a garnish.

Here’s Graham talking to WaPo about his views on Islam. Exit quotation from this allegedly retrograde avatar of archaic intolerance: “[I]f you look at what the religion does just to women, women alone, it is just horrid. And so yes, I speak out for women…”

I’m sorry; I can’t let this thread end with a complete douche of a quote. The next time you want to make fun of Scripture, please take a page from the Koran, and see how far that gets you. I challenge you to post it on a Muslim-oriented website as well. I’d be interested to see how your idiocy will reward you there.

Or, do you just enjoy being a douchebag towards Jews and Christians exclusively?

It seems we are already living under islamic rule.
9/11 emboldened them. Wait til they decide males with shaved faces are offensive. Will the military and the police change their rules and require facial hair on men.
Most of the dem women already have facial hair, so no worries.

What bothered me about this whole invite/disinvite/uninvite drama was the fact that nobody, NOBODY had the guts to say that if there is any any place that needs a prayer , it is the Pentagon, which suffered casualties due to an islamic attack . If the muslim employees feel offended by the 9-11 attack on the pentagon, they will join everyone of every faith to pray it never ever happens again to anybody.

macncheez on April 23, 2010 at 1:38 AM

Did they replace him with Jeremiah Wright or Father Fleger? Who will be representing the “religion of peace”, Anwar al-Awlaki? Locally, we helped collect items for and pack more than 50,000 of the total of millions of Christmas shoe boxes for distribution around the world “Operation Christmas Child”…that’s Franklin Graham’s work. All of that is dismissed and he is “disinvited” because he dares to point out the flaws in Islam? They don’t deserve to hear him speak if that is their standard.

CAIR – which is bankrolled by the Saudis and the United Arab Emirates, two countries that formally recognized the Taliban – also offers religious and cultural sensitivity training about Islam and Muslims to the military. In June, for example, CAIR trained more than 300 military personnel at the Marine Corps Air Station in Yuma, Ariz.

Also in June, CAIR was invited by the Pentagon to a ceremony dedicating the first Islamic center in Marine Corps history at Quantico headquarters outside of Washington.

While I strongly support the U.S. military, this is what happens when their mission stops being about winning wars and starts becoming more about rebuilding a country faster than the idiots can tear it down. Now the Pentagon thinks it is responsible to play the Peacekeeper role even in matters of morality and religion.

The irony is that Franklin Graham was doing good for Muslim families long before 9/11 and continues afterward as he had been doing all along. He has never changed his mission nor his message as a result of terror attacks, nor as a result of swelling religious pluralism.

And because he helps Muslim families is the precise reason why Franklin Graham’s view of the Islamic religion must be given due respect.

A lawyer who does over half of his cases pro bono is more entitled to be heard while speaking on victims’s rights than an ambulance-chaser who stands to profit from any public expression of social concern.
As a force for protecting the innocent, Graham has earned the privilege of speaking against the belief system that causes so much misery.

Here’s a clue from the club bus, it’s supposed to rhyme! It’s poetry. It’s written that way for a purpose, so that it’s easy to remember. Orwellian. Look, this group appears to have some legitimate beefs about religious indoctrination and discrimination , but this issue does not meet those standards, and flies in the face of the concept of “religious freedom” (which should not include censorship). And yes, Graham is right about how Islam treats women, and tough toogies to anyone who is offended by the truth. And of course Allah’s point about Major Hasan is spot on.

How does it embolden the enemy to show them that we’re not reflexively hatey cartoons on fire with the righteousness obdalord?

Sick hatey Christian supremacist Graham has no place at an ecumenical prayer thinger. He broke with the ecumenical tradition when he pronounced Islam to be evil.

He needs to go to things like hate rallies where he can feel uninhibited and be himself, not go to talk to our soldiers most of whom are a better sort of people, who understand that duty transcends the indulgings of hate.

Hatey Graham is no longer credible as a man of God.

He should maybe think of opening a Subway franchise especially cause now they have tasty breakfast.
