Comedy Central censors all references to Mohammed on “South Park”; Update: Parker and Stone issue statement

posted at 4:25 pm on April 22, 2010 by Allahpundit

As InstaGlenn says, this is actually the perfect ironic conclusion to the media’s post-Tax Day binge of hyperventilating about tea party extremism. Cranks holding up “Impeach the Kenyan!” signs at a right-wing rally are grist for a thousand NYT op-eds about Oklahoma City, but have jihadis intimidate the parent company of one of the most highly regarded comedies on television into blacking out its shows and it’s essentially a curio for the TV beat.

Comedy Central bleeped out all references to the Prophet Muhammad in Wednesday night’s episode of the animated show “South Park.”…

In addition to bleeping the words “Prophet Muhammad,” the show also covered the character with a large block labeled “Censored.”…

Abu Talhah al Amrikee, the author of the post [on the Muslim website threatening the creators of the show], told Foxnews.com he wrote the entry to “raise awareness.” He said the grisly photograph of van Gogh was meant to “explain the severity” of what Parker and Stone did by mocking Muhammad.

“It’s not a threat, but it really is a likely outcome,” al Amrikee said, referring to the possibility that Parker and Stone could be murdered for mocking Muhammad. “They’re going to be basically on a list in the back of the minds of a large number of Muslims. It’s just the reality.”

True enough, true enough. Mohammed also figured in last week’s episode; he wasn’t shown, per Comedy Central’s policy in recent years of bowing to Islamic blasphemy laws, but his name was mentioned in the dialogue. This week, after the new threats from filthbags like al-Amrikee, even that was gone. So absurd was it that some South Park fans thought Trey Parker and Matt Stone might have bleeped the name themselves as a goof. Not so:

On Thursday morning, a spokesman for Comedy Central confirmed that the network had added more bleeps to the episode than were in the cut delivered by South Park Studios, and that it was not giving permission for the episode to run on the studio’s Web site.

When you look for the episode on South Park’s website, this is what greets you. One mystery lingers: In the final scene, in vintage SP fashion, a bunch of characters gave mini-soliloquies about the moral of the story. The twist this time is that they were all bleeped out — roughly 30 seconds’ worth of airtime, filled with nothing but bleeps. I thought for sure that that had to be a joke — the moral of the story was how absurd censorship can be, and that was a perfect way to show it — but now I’m not so sure. Says the AP, “Comedy Central also censored 35 seconds’ worth of a conversation toward the end of the show between the characters Stan, Jesus Christ and Santa Claus. The network wouldn’t say Thursday whether this contained any reference to the warning [from jihadists].”

In lieu of a clip from the show, here’s something from last week’s Sarah Silverman Program goofing on Holocaust memorials that didn’t need to be censored. Why? Because no one threatened to bomb Comedy Central for showing it.

Update: Unbelievable.

In the 14 years we’ve been doing South Park we have never done a show that we couldn’t stand behind. We delivered our version of the show to Comedy Central and they made a determination to alter the episode. It wasn’t some meta-joke on our part. Comedy Central added the bleeps. In fact, Kyle’s customary final speech was about intimidation and fear. It didn’t mention Muhammad at all but it got bleeped too. We’ll be back next week with a whole new show about something completely different and we’ll see what happens to it.

So not only did Comedy Central censor the Mohammed stuff, but when they were called out for being cowards, they censored that too. Perfect.

I don’t have a TV so I haven’t been able to see this episode. I hope they print a transcript of what was bleeped at the end. I’ve been trying to stream the Cartoon Wars episode and there seems to be a problem with that. It might be my computer but I was able to see others.

I hope somehow a bootleg version of the original leaks out. It’s ironic that a show with roots in juvenile humor turns out to be the one place saying that the emperor has no clothes. I wonder if it would have caught on in the first place if it didn’t start out that way.

What gets me, is that South Park already showed Mohammed years ago, yet there was no fuss.

Now – since Muslims decided to kill thousands of us on 9/11, suddenly we’re the ones walking on eggshells?

Are you kidding me?

That part bugs the crap out of me. Before 9/11 was even over there were stories about reprisals and other BS, and Muslims all over were suddenly victims.

Don’t keep feeding me this “Islam is a religion of peace” crap, then come out with statements like;

“It’s not a threat, but it really is a likely outcome,”

Really? If that is the likely outcome in this, and so many other cases, I think we have a problem.

Go back to the middle east and come on back when you can behave like civilised Americans.

Where is the “entertainment and arts” community OUTRAGE at this. Bunch of phonies,,,,,,,if just one Christian had threatened any sort of violence after the many insults and assaults on Christianity,,they would be bloviating all over the place. I noticed that too. My DVR missed it because my husband wanted to record the Mavs game (and my DVR doesn’t understand that South Park is more important than reruns of other shows like Tivo could), but I thought I’d be fine in just catching the rerun.

I couldn’t believe it when I saw the boogers episode. It was funny, but I just can’t watch that much vomit.

repeating my comment from the earlier post here…

Mega-Props to Trey Parker and Matt Stone.

The humor in the episode was done in fairly good taste (considering their reputation). The jokes were NEVER about Mohammed, but about the insane reactions by overzealous Muslims.

From what I have heard so far, the vast majority of the crying and whining from the Muslim community is from these same overzealous followers, plus those who are trying to make political hay out of it.

I truly believe that there are a LOT of moderate Muslims who found it inoccuous (or would if they watched it). And I hope that the “Muslim outrage” reaction is seen by them to be what it is – either posturing, or insanity.

I am ashamed of Bill O’Reilly for suggesting that they went over the line with this, simply because it was dangerous to do so. That’s how Free Speech works, Bill. There is always the chance that someone will be offended, and that lunatics might want to harm you for exercising your right.

That is ZERO reason, in my opinion, to refrain from exercising the right of free speech. Some things are worth dying for. I don’t mean that as a death-wish, but cowardice will be the demise of freedom.

The Media and the Left (same thing) had long ignored Muslims in any real U.S. context, considering them pretty much irrelevant to their schemes for this country. But shortly after 9/11, once they saw the anger, they realized they had to move fast to create a brand new PC victim class that had never before existed. And here we are.

Saltysam on April 22, 2010 at 6:32 PM

The most disturbing thing about Muslim intolerance and threats of violence isn’t so much the intolerance and the threats. Islam reflects the personality of its founder in that regard, and by all accounts Mohammad was a violent, ruthless man. No, the most disturbing thing is the craven and cowardly response to Muslim intimidation by so many in government and media of the supposedly free democracies, as well as the tendency of some to relegate all of the violence and so on to ‘religious extremists’, a relativistic term lumping all people of faith with blood-soaked Jihadists–even though mass-murdering atheists such as Mao and Stalin and Pol Pot, et al killed more human beings in a single week than the dreaded Spanish Inquisition murdered in its entire centuries-long existence. Belief in God is not the source of irrationality in this world.

The Muslims who threatened Parker and Stone told them to remember Theo Van Gogh. And so we should remember Theo Van Gogh. We should honor his memory and his courage and stand up and speak out for the freedoms he practiced and celebrated. To my knowledge, not one mention of this particularly brave and talented filmmaker was made at the Academy Awards ceremony the year he was murdered in the street. The reaction of our own artistic ‘community’, that self-congratulatory, ineffectual vanguard of free expression, has been disgraceful, cowardly, tragically typical.

While one cannot expect anything named ‘Comedy Central’ to act with bravery and conviction, one can expect a society of free people to recognize the danger these kinds of threats represent. We are not victims. We are not sheep. We do not submit.

And I haven’t read all the comments so I apologize if this has been mentioned, but:

Here is the true test for Jon Stewart. Is he just a guy who rips on Conservatives or does he have the stones to repeatedly mention Mohammed on his show tonight. Surely this is as topical a story as any this week. Any bets? (I’m saying he’s a wuss.)

BKeyser on April 22, 2010 at 6:43 PM

‘Muhammad’ now a dirty word on ‘South Park’

The Muhammad content is also not available on the South Park Studios website.

A message on the site states: “We do not have network approval to stream our original version of the show. We will bring you a version of [episode] 201 as soon as we can.”

Ironically, “South Park” apparently shows an image of the Prophet Muhammad briefly in its opening credits that has gone largely unnoticed.

BTW, whomever is the programmer responsible for the code that runs Hotair needs to take a course in Performance Management. Here lately, Hotair has just about got to be the slowest running blog on the web.

Couple of thoughhts:

1) I have come to believe that in national security issues the best way to predict what a liberal will do is to ask, “What would a coward do?” Just try that mental excercise with any conflict issue and you will be amazed at how you can accurately predict outcomes. Thus, youi can pretty much bet that it was a cabal of liberals that made this decision at Comedy Central.

2) Amazing. In the brave new world, “Muhammed” is now the new n-word. The name that dare not be spoken.

Ed! Allah! Lets have a happy post about a favorable poll or an exciting primary of the future somewhere. Being cowards in the face of Muslims is kind of a pathetic place to be.

BL@KBIRD on April 22, 2010 at 8:06 PM

no worry. comedy central will re-establish their cred with libz by criticizing Joe McCarthy or something. See – that’s brave & cutting edge to libz. Picking on a guy who’s been dead for 50 years.

Unfu%*ingbelievable.

I *loathe* Islamofascists. They’re an absolute scourge to the planet. In fact, in honor of “Earth Day,” let’s fumigate them.

EarthToZoey on April 22, 2010 at 8:16 PM

Calling all moderate Muslims to come out publicly and denounce any threats regarding the Mohammed episode. C’mon you moderate Muslims, we’re always hearing that you’re out there. Not the secular Muslims, but the real deal pray 5 times a day moderate Muslims. Where are you??? Your fellow Americans are being threatened with death in the name of your religion.

What is that I hear? Oh right, crickets chirping…

CarolynM on April 22, 2010 at 8:16 PM

So making fun of Christ is nonstop but no Mohammad jokes since his followers threaten violence.

Comedy Central is pathetic.

Comedy Central needs to grow some testicular fortitude.

Hey, that looks just like my Mohammed T-shirt that’s been washed too many times.

CarolynM on April 22, 2010 at 8:35 PM

BTW – I consider Muslims a threat, but not the threat. That position belongs to the statists among us. Muslims can never destroy us, not by themselves. The statists already are.

splink on April 22, 2010 at 7:36 PM

True enough. It’s beyond dispute that the followers of socialist personalty cults killed far, far more innocent people than Muslim militants.

CarolynM on April 22, 2010 at 8:35 PM

That’s awesome that you not only have the T-shirt, but that it’s faded from use. The best response to these threats is to plaster his image everywhere.

jhffmn on April 22, 2010 at 8:38 PM

PBS … had a chilling and disgusting doco on devout muslims by day, child rapers [sic] at night. This is going on in Afghanistan NOW. … These Muslims are portrayed as religious when they are disgusting hypocrites and child rapers.

Gob on April 22, 2010 at 4:58 PM

Huh? Why the charge of hypocrisy? I don’t understand. The prophet Mohammed was up front about his perversions. Muslims have been copying the spirit and the letter of the Prophet’s deviant behavior for close to 1400 years as the perfect model of human conduct. So why should we assume such deviant behavior is evidence of lack of Muslim religiosity? Wouldn’t it tend to confirm it?

Again, not saying the formula “child rapist = devout Muslim” (or especially “devout Muslim = child rapist”) is valid, just saying that the formula “devout Muslim ≠ child rapist” is NOT valid. Make sense?

And raising this issue per se is not what gets your head chopped off, it’s raising it disapprovingly. If you’re fine with it, then it shouldn’t cause you to lose your head!

The Muslims are thought to be soooo religious and devote [sic], yet at night they bugger little boys. I can see a LIBERAL not getting it…but not a Consrevative FFS!

Gob on April 22, 2010 at 7:05 PM

Again, perfectly consistent with the behaviors practiced by the prophet Mohammad, uswa hasana, al insan al-kamil. I think the ones not “getting it” are those who think these behaviors are in any way inconsistent. Liberal or conservative, doesn’t matter.
