Blackout: Police chase reporters away from covering protest outside White House

posted at 4:50 pm on April 20, 2010 by Allahpundit

Via Ben Smith, who’s told by his reporter pals covering the WH beat that this is “extremely unusual” police behavior. Maybe the protest got out of hand and the cops shooed the media away for their own safety? Doesn’t sound like it: Apparently, the “protest” was nothing more than six servicemen handcuffing themselves to the fence to object to “don’t ask, don’t tell.” I don’t know D.C. well enough to tell if these are city cops or some type of federal security service that might conceivably coordinate with the White House. Any readers know? We certainly don’t want to accuse a president who’s peeved at gay-rights protesters and who’s known for excluding the media from traditional press opportunities of quashing unfavorable coverage without good reason.

Exit question: On a scale of one to 10, where would this rate on the Crushing-of-Dissent-o-meter if it had happened under Bush? (Exit answer: Eight!)

Maybe Barry is upset because all these gay rights protesters are ruining the meme that Tea Party protests are worthy of nothing but ridicule.

Just when the Pentagon appears willing to reexamine DADT, they start pulling stunts like this.

Way to go, Gay Mafia.

Because forcing Americans to accept gay marriage has worked out so splendidly.

Idiots.

The Ugly American on April 20, 2010 at 5:30 PM

They are uniformed U.S. Secret Service police. They control the area around the White House. U.S. Capitol police control the grounds of the Capitol and surrounding blocks. Park police wouldn’t have jurisdiction over Penn Ave in that location.

The Hort on April 20, 2010 at 5:21 PM

I agree Hort…. but that dude in the baby blue shirt is park police. I’m not sure where the boundaries of Lafayette “Park” begin and end, but I am pretty sure that the street is Secret Service territory and then the park police picked up “closing” Lafayette Park? Not sure if that “park” has ever been closed before.

This would rate about a 7.6 on the Crushing-o-dissent meter between the years of 2000-2008.

After which time we became once again free from all this nonsense.

Oh…

Good Lt on April 20, 2010 at 5:42 PM

If this had been Bush doing it, an empeachment bill would already be drafted with a vote at 3AM.

I thought it was a bit strange that this left liberal interest group was allowed to continuously interupt Obama. It was obvious that he did not want to offend them no mater how baddly they were acting towards him. I wondered at the time how that same situaion would have been different if it had been a conservative interest interupting him.

Now we have this same group protesting again, which is their right, making a public statement. What is it about the statement that makes it so different from a conservative interest, that it has to be hidden away from public interest groups and reporters. Could it be they are from Obama’s own base of support?

They obviously are dangerous as they are exhibiting dissent and radical aggresive behavior towards the Government and directed to Obama. If those had been members of a tea party group, what would they have been calling this? Oh, yeah, that woud be bad, better keep the press away so that does not happen.

Silly you. He doesn’t plan to leave in 2012. Or 2016. Or 2020…

Daggett on April 20, 2010 at 4:58 PM

Silly all of us. Pause for a moment and consider that berri does indeed plan to leave.

His puppeteers have promised him that as soon as he crashes and burns this stinking, racist, free-market sh$thole known as the U.S.A., berri can then step over the rotting mess as he ascends to his righteous destiny as King of the One World Government. (The useful idiot doesn’t realize that his usefulness will end when America does.)

If all goes as planned, there won’t be a soverign USA in 2012, let alone beyond.

P.S. and a little OT: imo, it seems that the teaparty’s Contract from America is all about the money and not about the lives of 40+ million unborn – who, lest we forget, were at the very eye of the obamacare hurricane, but didn’t rate a “Top 10″ spot in the Contract. Pathetic. Translation from God: “If you want to be my Warriors, then listen when I speak, loud and clear, about the connection between the destruction of your nation and abortion. Listen.”

But we can’t seem to get it into our thick heads that without defending innocent blood, we can’t hope to win because God won’t be with us.

And, let’s try forgetting about gimmicks like the Contract. Can we improve on the Bill of Rights and the Constitution? Those are the Contracts OF America, written in and defended with the very lives and blood of our patriot forefathers, who would never have believed that these documents could be so shredded and America’s citizens so apathetic as to allow something as evil as murder of preborn human beings to rampage through our land for almost forty years and counting…

When we stop abortion, we will stop the Left, because disgusting as it sounds, it is true. The demons of the Left feed on the blood of the unborn and the mental and spiritual undoing of their parents.

The stake through the heart of the Left is not “fiscal conservatism”, although that will follow. In fact, a complete springtime of all things good will follow. But first, the stake through the heart of the Left must be driven, and that is, to acknowledge that God is sovereign King, and the murder of His children will no more stalk this land.

JeffinOrlando on April 20, 2010 at 5:31 PM

Yeah, I’ve never seen Park Police in that area, so if he is park police, that’s a new one. The uniformed secret service tends to patrol north to H Street, which is the other side of the park. Lafayette park has a couple gates on each side also controlled by Service, so seeing them in the park isn’t that big of a deal. Park police may claim it’s theirs, but Service would more than likely overrule them on jurisdiction. As for closing the park down, it happens on occasion. If a foreign leader is staying in Blair House, they sometimes shut it down during his stay. I remember them doing that for Tony Blair and John Howard. Haven’t seem them close it in a long while, though. I drive by there twice a day to/from work.

The Hort on April 20, 2010 at 8:02 PM

Funny, they are illegally assaulting the White House and not a word about ‘Sedition’.

DaMav on April 20, 2010 at 9:22 PM

The sad thing about this, less than 100 yards inside the fence sits 6 to 8 cameras, owned by ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox News, NBC/MSNBC, PBS, and a Pool Camera for International Networks. Let’s see their video. Not even the Secret Service would ask them not to tape an incident outside the fence. During the first 30 seconds of the video I saw Ann Compton, ABC White House correspondent, running through the shot. I bet she was running back into the WH lawn, she did not want to be trapped outside since she had to be ready for her cut-in at 6:30. What does she know about all this? What will Gibbs say tomorrow?

Even if one of these cuffed fools had a bomb strapped to them I still do not think the Police would ask the press to back up to the next block. Just out of the way so the agencies can take care of the protesters.

Someone in the WH did NOT want these people taped being taken away. I want to see how the press reacts to this one.. If it quiets down fast then we can be assured the MSM are the lap dogs to this administration. I used to work for one of them. Editorial meeting tonight and tomorrow morning will be interesting at the bureaus.

Peace!
