Did Charlie Crist pull ads in Florida?
posted at 11:36 am on April 19, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
The St. Petersburg Times blog The Buzz notes a couple of potentially significant developments in the Republican Senate primary in Florida. First, it appears that Charlie Crist has pulled his advertising in the Orlando and Tampa Bay markets after initially running strongly negative attack ads against Marco Rubio:
The Marco Rubio campaign says Charlie Crist has halted all its TV advertising in the Orlando and Tampa Bay markets where the anti-Rubio spots were airing. That’s presumably a sign that Crist has decided to marshal his resources for later or perhaps drop out altogether.
That could indicate a couple of different outcomes. Crist’s campaign may have discovered that the negative ads had no effect on the polling in those markets and perhaps didn’t have replacement positive ads ready for airing. It could also be a prelude to declaring himself as an independent, which would mean that Crist could save his money for the general election instead of spending all of it now. That seems less likely after Crist confidante George LeMieux, who currently fills that Senate seat as a temporary appointee, appeared this morning on MS-NBC and insisted Crist wouldn’t run as an independent:
Meanwhile George LeMieux just appeared on The Daily Rundown on MSNBC and dismissed the prospect of Crist dropping out of the GOP primary and running as a no party affiliation candidate.
“I have every reason to believe that Charlie Crist is running as a Republican and this independent thing will not happen,” LeMieux said.
Crist has another option, one getting increasing attention in the past few weeks. Instead of sticking around for a divisive battle with Rubio this year, Crist could withdraw and spend a couple of years rebuilding himself for a 2012 challenge against Democratic incumbent Bill Nelson. The state GOP would likely encourage Crist by promising better support the next time around if Crist doesn’t get in Rubio’s way to the Senate this year. The big question will be whether Crist has taken too much damage in this cycle to be viable in 2012 if another Rubio-like conservative decides to toss his or her hat in the ring.
Pulling the ads makes it look like Crist has come to some sort of decision — and we won’t have to wait much longer to see what it is. The filing deadline is eleven days away.
Update: Reid Wilson reports for National Journal that top officials in the national GOP believe Crist will go rogue:
Top GOP officials in DC now believe it is a virtual certainty that FL Gov. Charlie Crist (R) will bolt the GOP and run instead as an independent, sources tell Hotline OnCall.
Over the weekend, Crist pulled TV advertisements that had been running in key markets, slamming ex-FL House Speaker Marco Rubio (R). Those ads, on which Crist spent close to $1.5M so far, were aimed at moving poll numbers that showed Crist losing badly.
In taking the ads down, top GOP officials have surmised both that Crist has made his decision to run as an independent, and that the attacks weren’t having an impact on the race.
If so, expect that announcement sooner rather than later.

Cuz what’s holding Crist back is the (R) label.

Why does he think he can win as an Independent? I don’t get it…
ladyingray on April 19, 2010 at 11:40 AM
There’s no way on God’s green Earth Crist will go indy. If anything is to happen, he’ll pull out and wait a couple years. Or he’ll stay in the race. We don’t know, it’s all speculation at this point.

Charlie Crist begins to unzip his head…revealing that, in fact, he was Dede Scozzafava all along!

Crist is holding Crist back. The Obama hug, his debate against Rubio. Crist sh1tting on Reagan (invoking Reagan – totally out of context – to support a $1 tax on cigarettes), vetoing common sense sb6 out of shear political calcuation. Etc.
lorien1973 on April 19, 2010 at 11:47 AM
Crist could be thinking of dropping out. I don’t believe he’s stupid enough to run as an independent, my guess is he’d end up getting less votes than Kendrick Meek and Rubio would win anyway.
For the person that said the (R) was hurting Crist: You must be joking. MOst Republicans consider Crist Republican lite anyway, after hugging Obama and embracing California’s environmental regulations, Charlie sort of put his conservative label to rest for a while. Now he’s vetoed a bill that conservative Florida Republicans support, which further hurt him here. NO, it’s not the “R” that’s hurting him, it’s his politics that are hurting him.
bflat879 on April 19, 2010 at 11:50 AM
I don’t see how this can end well for Crist. There are 3 possible outcomes to an indie run:
1) He draws enough support away from Rubio to hand Meeks the win. Costing the GOP a Senate seat will make him the most hated man in the country amongst conservatives and Republican faithful.
2) He manages to siphon off enough votes from both Rubio and Meeks to squeak out a win. Crist gets what he wanted, but he’s left without a party. Conservatives will hate him for taking out a rising star in Rubio. GOP leaders will be left with egg on their face for endorsing a guy who dumped the R label over the actual Republican. And Democrats will only need him for the occasional useful idiot vote when Graham or the Maine sisters won’t oblige.
3) He loses to Rubio anyway. He loses the Senate race, he alienates the GOP leaders, he makes himself even more of a laughing stock amongst conservatives, and he kills any shot he had at Nelson’s seat in 2012.

Orlando and Tampa Bay are along the “I-4 corridor” of Florida, full of “swing voters” who could vote either way. Northern Florida and the Southwest (Cape Coral/Fort Myers/Naples) tend to vote conservative, and the Gold Coast (Miami/Palm Beach/Fort Lauderdale) is notoriously liberal, but why would Crist pull his ads against Rubio in “swing” areas if he was planning to run as an Indie? Wouldn’t the I-4 area be where Crist would find the most support?
Crist is toast–burned to a Crist.
Steve Z on April 19, 2010 at 11:51 AM
lorien, this is the only thing I can agree with. Crist didn’t look good during that FOX News “debate”. He was on the defensive the entire time, looking stressed, while Rubio exuded more confidence. Doesn’t mean Rubio is a better choice, but it does reflect on the voters.
I will hold to my promise…but I won’t have to.
JetBoy on April 19, 2010 at 11:52 AM
I hope you’re hungry for your own words, bud. He’s douchey enough to jump ship.
MadisonConservative on April 19, 2010 at 11:52 AM
That’s just it, I think Crist has too much class to jump ship. It’s just not him.
JetBoy on April 19, 2010 at 11:54 AM
I’d vote crist over nelson. But I’d have to vote rubio over crist.
If crist could drop out and come against nelson in 2012, that’d be great. But, obviously, his loyalties exist only to himself. And that’s not what is needed.

I hope that the state GOP doesn’t even mention that to Crist…he’s damaged goods
cmsinaz on April 19, 2010 at 12:05 PM
He is gonna pull a Lieberman and run as an independent. His internal polls are most likely showing him splitting the vote enough to squeak out a win with an “I” behind his name.
Johnnyreb on April 19, 2010 at 12:07 PM
i don’t get it…who would truly vote for him as an (I)?

All politicians are egotistical self-centered jackasses. Of course he’s going to do whatever the echo chamber tells him to do. Laying down without fighting the fight is impossible for politicians to do unless they have a greater incentive not to fight in the first place.
I personally don’t think 2012 is a good enough incentive to have him not run as an independent.

I’m just waiting for the autopsy and the epitaph of Charlies failed run. It may last until November.
Charlie should take advantage of the free publicity and use it to morph himself in to a viable candidate to run against Nelson in 2012.
I’m certain he would be capable of that! :)
Nelsa on April 19, 2010 at 12:25 PM
Am I understanding your position correctly? You are encouraging a third party (independent) run because you are disappointed in the GOP candidate that is leading in the polls at this time.

And he would have gotten away with it too, if it weren’t for you meddling kids and their stupid dog!
DrAllecon on April 19, 2010 at 12:27 PM
At this point, I kind of pity Charlie Crist. He seems like he’s personally a nice guy, but he’s incurably stuck in the “pre-Tea Party” political way of thinking. Now, every time I see him he has the “oh sh!t, I’m done” look of a deer caught in the headlights.
Probably the most dignified thing for him to do is to just drop out of the race.

If Crist switches parties I will be so pissed. I live in Tampa and have been a No Party affiliated voter my whole life. In Florida, you have to be a member of a party if you want to vote in the primary.
So, I switched parties so I could vote (for Rubio) in the primary, and now this jackass wants to switch?! What a waste of my time and paperwork.
Crist was so much better when he was just keeping people from defrauding hurricane victims. Why run for Senate and be 1 of 100 when you can stay Governor, which is akin to being President of Florida?
76United on April 19, 2010 at 12:44 PM
Chuck Todd is wee-Todd-it.
Don’t ya just love how the left-wing media tries to pick the other parties’ candidates that they want to run against?
UltimateBob on April 19, 2010 at 12:45 PM
This is bordering on sad and pathetic. Dude, you’ve seen the polls…retreat and re-brand yourself. Maybe next cycle, people will have forgotten that you vetoed an education bill that you had previously supported. Or maybe not….
search4truth on April 19, 2010 at 12:50 PM
Crist was the milk toast one of the runts in the after Jeb election.
We don’t have much better this year and he could have walked into a second term as Governor just by running.
Another of the politicians we have instead of representatives of the people. We are loaded with them.

There’s a great big desperate L on his forehead.

If Suntan Charlie goes Indie, he loses bigtime and becomes an embarrassment to himself and to Florida. If he stays R, he loses bigtime and becomes an embarrassment to himself and to Florida. If he drops out of the race and endorses Rubio, he saves face and gains points for a 2012 race against Bill “Pig Eyed” Nelson–whom he just might beat.
There’s really only one answer that makes any sense. So it’s even money that Charlie will choose the wrong one.
Crusader Rabbit on April 19, 2010 at 2:49 PM
Speculation that Republican insiders will make room for Crist to run against Nelson in 2012 is crazy. That’s precisely what Jeb Bush did in 2004 when he promised Katherine Harris she would have a clear run against Nelson in 2006 if she would drop out of the Republican primary. Harris was a lightning rod of Democrat anger for her role in the 2000 election of George W Bush. If she had won the primary in 2004 she would have so galvanized Democrats it would have cost GWB Florida in the presidential election.
That was smart politics, but Republicans essentially ceded Nelson’s seat to him. Republicans aren’t stupid. They won’t give Nelson a pass in 2012 by making a deal with Crist.
Anyway, Jeb wants to run against Nelson in 2012. And he will win.

Even if Crist pulls out to wait 2 years to run against Nelson, there’s no guarantee another con won’t be discovered to run also. The people have discovered who he is and you can’t change that like you can the designation behind your name.
