Audio: Laura Ingraham and Charles Blow clash over tea party “minstrel show” column

Skip ahead to a quarter of the way through if you don’t want to bother with the intro. I touched on his column in the Bill Maher post over the weekend, but if you missed it, read it now. He never quite gets around to calling Zo Rachel a race traitor or Uncle Tom — or maybe he did and the Times’s editors thought that would be a tad much for such a tolerant, diverse newspaper — but the “minstrel show” crack is clear enough in its import. Here’s a radical theory: Maybe minorities were overrepresented at the podium in Dallas because tea party leaders wanted to send a high-profile signal that non-whites are welcome to join the movement. Blow assumes that this was some sort of “performance” for the benefit of whites in attendance, but my hunch is that the target audience was entirely different — i.e. black and Latino independents who may share some of the same concerns as TPers about taxes and spending but are wary of getting involved with what our moral superiors on the left are now calling “Tea Klanners.” The only way to challenge the media’s narrative is to put minority tea partiers in front of the cameras, which won’t stop New York Times smear merchants from calling them Stepin Fetchits or whatever but may reach a few people who are still open-minded about the dynamic.
If you’re looking for a tough but fair piece on last week’s rallies, I recommend this piece (also mentioned by Ingraham) from WaPo’s Robert McCartney. Yes, there are plenty of kooks in the tea party, he notes, but racists are a little harder to find.

I don’t go to “tea parties”… although I am a sympathizer… but I figure the people passionate enough to show up to one have to be a little kookish…
Personally, I wish the Tea Party organizers did two things…
1. Per P.J. O’Rourke, improved their babe ratio… some of them have been ok… but most have been deficient IMO… the Tea Party is doing no worse than the left, but the media is not on your side…

He used the “minstrel show” historical reference in his column to describe the event (never interviewing any of the people who were part of the “show”) but insists he didn’t mean anything racial or accuse anyone of racism in doing so?
Why not, then, simply use the word “props” or “actors” or “staged events” instead of “minstrel show”?
Everyone above the age of 15 knows what “minstrel show” means.

The Blow slime lied when he wrote the details of his attendance at teh event.
There were no stadium workers when he got to the event and IF he was asked as he came in the gte if he was there to work it would have been that he was asked if he was a volunteer. I was asked if I was there to work and I am blonde and white. There was a sign in table for volunteers
But then he lied when he said he sat on the front row. I worked the section with the front row and Charles Blow NEVER sat there.

My politically reform conservative Jewish parents were always being told by their liberal ‘brethren’ that they were ‘faux’ Jews, and self-loathers, and that our family in Europe must have been collaborators. My father didn’t look Jewish which made things even worse.

As for Bill…he should be kindly reminded that the OKC incident was done under his watch…and was done because of his, and Reno’s actions at Waco! If I’m not mistaken, no one ever asked, or knows, what political affiliation McVeigh was. Nor does it matter. As there are Republicans, Democrats, Libertarians, and others serving in the military. That doesn’t automatically assume that McVeigh acted as he did because of that…when it’s on record that he was angry at the government for their actions against Koresh at Waco.

For the most part, these are not people who have spent their lives going to rallies or being particularly political or doing anything kookier than going to Disney World.
“Kooky.” “Wacky.” Why not cross-eyed? Or purple-striped? Or alcoholic? Or opera fanatics?
Any one of those or a thousand others (which we will ultimately no doubt hear eventually, though I don’t mean from you) might as well be applied.
You can only assume these things (“have to be wacky or they wouldn’t be at a demonstration,” etc.) if you assume that there is nothing going on which would make ordinary people feel they need to speak out.
Which is, of course, what they want everyone to think.

Libs proceed from a basic premise, and that’s their end as well as their beginning.
Last week, I made a point to lib. I then used an illustration to which he argued just one word. I then posted the definitions of that word. He then argued which definition I meant.
It’s a game among liberals, to browbeat just so they win. If you play that game, they then change the focus of the argument. It’s the kind of play that really comes right out of Hell, if you believe there’s such a place.
Libs cannot be honest even in their own heads. That’s why they say no blacks are among the Tea but, when they see we’re not the racists they claim we are, they call those people of color ‘minstrels’.
Funny–I have yet to meet a black Conservative who’d put on a show. He/she will tell anyone else to get stuffed.

I’ll never forget when The Cosby Show was ending its wildly successful run, and some grievance mongers put out a press release about how, having a doctor married to a lawyer, it didn’t reflect the reality of the Black Experience.
I thought back to how Good Times was attacked for portraying that experience too well, reinforcing stereotypes about black folk in da hood. Then I realized that any depiction of black people would violate one of the two, so the only thing left would be to avoid depicting them at all.
But excluding black characters from the media would be the most raaaaacist thing of all, so the grievance grudge groups really have it wired — no matter what you do, you’re raaaaacist.
(By my calculations, that actually makes for a triple standard.)

Ingraham kind of blew it here. She accepted Blows thesis and went from there, but his thesis is flawed. Even so, if she’s going to accept his thesis of racism, I wish they would’ve had a montage of all the racism the Left spews on a daily basis.
The racism charge Mr. Blow (and leftists) makes with the Tea Party movement is that this so-called racism somehow delegitimizes the ideas and philosophy of the movement itself. So Mr. Blow claims the people speaking on the stage at the Dallas TP event were the only representation of diversity and the crowd was plain vanilla. Even if that is the case, does that make the issues of the TP moot and illegitimate? Absolutely not.
