Police report: No evidence of political motive in beating of Jindal staffer

posted at 4:12 pm on April 16, 2010 by Allahpundit

My sense is that reader interest in this story expired a few days ago, but since Pat Dollard’s now claiming the NOPD told him there was a political motive and the officer he spoke to is claiming he told Dollard no such thing, I guess a new post is obligatory.

Here’s the police report, the key part of which was helpfully transcribed by the boss emeritus. Nasty shouting? Check. Vicious assault resulting in gruesome injuries? Check. Political angle? Hmmm…

“Shortly before 10:30pm, Mr. Brown and Ms. Bautsch left the restaurant and began walking towards St. Louis. Street. Mr. Brown noted there were still several protestors loitering in the area, but not nearly the number which had been present earlier. Soon after leaving the restaurant, he heard what he described as ‘cat calls.’ At an unknown point within the 400 block of Royal Street, both Mr. Brown and Ms. Bautsch then crossed from the Brennan’s side of the street to the Supreme Court side of the street. They continued to walk towards St. Louis when Mr. Brown began to hear people behind him scream obscenities. Initially he was not sure if thoese were being directed at him and his girlfriend, or if they were simply the outbursts of drunken revelers. As they neared the intersection, Mr. Brown stated he heard subjects state thing such as, ‘Little blonde bitch,’ ‘You’re a fu**king faggot,’ and ‘You think you’re fu**king special.’ At this point Mr. Brown realized these derogatory terms were being directed at Ms. Bautsch and him. He then requested she begin to walk faster toward the Omni-Royal hotel located at the intersection of St. Louis and Royal. Mr. Brown also recalled the farther they got from the restaurant, the closer these subjects got to them. When they reached the corner of St. Louis and Royal, Mr. Brown and his date turned south on St. Louis. It was at this time that one of the subjects pushed him into the iron gate which surrounds the State Supreme Court. He then fell to the ground, and one of the attackers got on top of him and began to attack him. Mr. Brown stated as he was being pushed to the ground, Ms. Bautsch was also either pushed down or fell down near where he was. As he fought to get his attacker off of him, he heard his girlfriend cry out in pain. She then repeatedly stated,”Oh my god, my leg is broken.”

All of the attackers then ran away in an unknown direction. Mr. Brown then saw two uniformed Police Officers respond to their location. He requested they notify an ambulance as Ms. Bautsch was in obvious physical pain. The officers then did so. In response to Sergeant Gernon’s questions, Mr. Brown stated the majority of the protestors had left the area outside of Brennan’s about an hour prior to their leaving the restaurant. Additionally he was unsure if the attackers were the protestors. It should be noted that other than making reference to the victims being nicely dressed, along with other observations about their physical appearance, Mr. Brown did not hear them make any other comments.

Bautsch’s mother told Fox News today that “things were said to my daughter and to her boyfriend that basically everything was about money,” but otherwise she shied away from speculating about politics. (She did, however, say that Bautsch’s leg was broken in four places, and that she has a screw running straight through her ankle. Good lord.) I don’t know how to explain the confusion between the NOPD on the one hand and Dollard and Yahoo News, which cites a source close to Bautsch as saying she does indeed believe there was a political motive, on the other. One possibility: Maybe Bautsch thinks the attackers were protesters and is inferring a political motive from that, even though nothing explicitly political was said. Another possibility: Maybe the attackers were, in fact, protesters of some anarchist stripe and zeroed in on Brown and Bautsch because they looked like stereotypically well-heeled members of the dreaded bourgeoisie. That would explain the sneering about money and being nicely dressed and it would qualify as a political motive, but not quite the political motive originally imagined by the rumor that they were beaten by mainstream lefties for wearing Palin buttons. Not sure what lesson, if any, can be drawn at this point, but consider yourself up to speed until, inevitably, we hear from Bautsch and Brown themselves.

MadisonConservative on April 16, 2010 at 4:28 PM

So the narrative is :

1. This couple is not black so their beating is not a racist crime

2. This couple is not gay so their beating is not a hate crime

3. They did not hear anyone call them ‘republicans’ while they were being beaten up in a dark street,so their beating is not politically motivated

4. There are no eyewitnesses to their beating so this was just another night in the chocolate city

Well, all they need to do is blame Bush for the incident and everything will be OK ….right NOPD ?

Read the police report. You’re doing the same thing with this incident that the Left did with the Kentucky census worker.

We will not know if this was politically motivated or an “obvious assault on republicans” until the thugs are caught. Rather than jumping to preconceived, politically expedient conclusions, evaluate the case using the facts and information that has been released to the public.

Django on April 16, 2010 at 4:37 PM

I could be wrong about this, but wasn’t Pat Dollard involved in something shady? My memory is probably faulty, but I had the impression that he’s not the best source to rely on.

Anyway, I’m in sync with Allah’s take on this. More information is defintitely needed, but I think if perps turn out to have been at the protest earlier, then this was probably politically motivated against the “fatcats” and their expensive fundraiser.

Another reason to carry a camera and film these protesters, btw, in case an incident occurs. It can be helpful later in catching the culprits, or exonerating the innocent.

Castle Doctrine here would have worked. You at any time feel your person or property is endangered; you have the right to defend yourself and property with full 9mm force. We love it where I live. It has prevented many a trial for scumbags like these who like to go around beating up people.

Was just in the Big Easy two weeks ago. It does not take much to find yourself in big trouble no matter what your political affiliation. Yummy food, awesome alcoholic beverages, and a trip to the D-Day Museum. I highly recommend going during the daytime and early evening if not a native, or a near native from the Magnolia state.

Look… it was not a mugging for money. That is a fact. This was a beating from the anarchist protestors who were outside the fundraising dinner. Simple.
No, it was not for Palin buttons. No, it was not from Democrats.

It was left wing wackos. It was from the same people the left likes when and the liberal media highlights when they demonstrate at any Capitalist or Conservative conferences… ie. World Bank, World Summits, WTO, etc. and they break windows, trash property and hurl stones, molotov cocktails, etc. These are the far left… BUT THEY ARE LEFT WING
So, it is political. It is the far left against conservatives.
Nothing complicated about that. These are the PETA types, the CODE PINK types, the ACORN types, the SEIU types…
just because they were not plain old Democrats means nothing.
The LSM has always coddled these idiots instead of denouncing them, because they give good TV moments for the evening news. Maybe we should charge the left with inciting these people to violence.. lets accuse Olberman, Shultz, Ratigan, Maddow, the talking heads at ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, CNN of inciting these people with hate speech against conservatives, which led to this violence. Maybe we should accuse the Black National Congress of inciting these people with lies of Tea Party and conservatives calling the N word.

It’s only hate crimes or politically motivated if it is one of theirs injured, real or imagined.

Remember in 2007 when Air America’s Randi Rhodes was said to have been mugged by right-wingers? Recall the anger and outrage and even after reports of her stumbling drunk and falling down came out, the left cried cover-up?

LewWaters on April 16, 2010 at 5:59 PM

veritas43 on April 16, 2010 at 5:54 PM

What are you talking about? Ashley Todd perpetrated a fake hate crime where she falsely claimed she’d been mutilated. No one is questioning whether a crime occurred here! People are using common sense to suggest that there could be a link to the anarchists who just happened to be protesting the same day, and to use their own words which I found at their anarchist website:

Protesters marched against traffic and lost the police on the way, and attempted to storm the restaurants doors after chants echoed off the walls in the narrow French Quarter streets. The police arrived just as people started to stream through the doors and they pushed everyone back outside. SRLC delegates were forced to walk a gauntlet of protesters chanting “they say cut backs, we say fight back!” as they exited the restaurant.

Eventually the march headed back to the Hilton and chanted “Racist, Sexist, Anti-Gay, Right Wing Bigots Go Away” to the delegates entering and exiting the hotel before dispersing.

The march included brass bands, students from UNO, healthcare workers fighting to re-open Charity Hospital, and people angry about a bunch of racist, fascist bigots coming to New Orleans after their leaders drowned it only 4 years ago. New Orleans is still badly damaged from the hurricane, and the GOP should be ashamed to come party on top of its ruins while we still struggle to recover. Their arrogance and wealth is only fuel to stoke our fires of anger at the injustice and deprivation we live through every day.

Nothing to see here, move along.

Buy Danish on April 16, 2010 at 6:01 PM

Christien on April 16, 2010 at 6:08 PM

Well, I agree we’ll need to hear more from the victims first, but the theory that these were far left anarchist nutjobs seems most plausible to me at this point, 1) because anarchists were in the area protesting earlier in the evening, 2) because somebody doesn’t follow someone for several blocks, assaulting them with verbal taunts and then beating them so badly for so long that they end up with several broken bones if there’s NOT some kind of political or personal motive, and 3) at the risk of arousing our race-baiting trolls, these dudes were apparently white and, as someone else points out above, there aren’t a whole lot of white thugs roaming the streets of New Orleans (which is a toilet, BTW — apologies to any NOLA residents here; I just dislike the place).

But it does sound like the fact they were targeted for wearing Palin buttons specifically can be ruled out. I thought from the get-go that was the most specious part of the story. My mind is still open to the strong possibility this was politically motivated however. Ordinarily I would say I won’t hold my breath that they’ll catch these punks, but hopefully the fact she’s a staffer in the governor’s office will put some pressure on the police. And if they were part of the demonstration, there’s got to be video somewhere that the victims can use to ID them.

Sounds like a good assessment to me. I think you have it right. We were at a tea party in a small MD city yesterday. Most had signs and we were along the main street in town. I didn\’t have a sign, but my husband did. A slight young man with a cane limped by me and called me a fascist. The situation was so absurd that I laughed out loud. There were at least 50 people within 10 feet of me so I guess he figured I wouldn\’t beat the crap out of him with all of those witnesses. They are out there and the Democrats are trying to provoke anything they can. This is all part of their plan. I sure hope they find those punks because breaking someone\’s leg in four places for no apparent reason makes it a politically motivated incident no matter who you are. We are no longer free.

“they say cut backs, we say fight back!”

So a bunch of people who purport to be in favor of no government at all are protesting government cutbacks?

Oh, the irony.

NoLeftTurn on April 16, 2010 at 6:13 PM

Maybe it’s voodoo incense-related. The house just banned that stuff.

They’re not that type of “anarchist”. They’re the type of anarchist that wants a totalitarian dictatorship. I guess they intend it to be such a bloody, arbitrarily ruled place that it’ll be indistinguishable from real anarchy.

Your niece must be confused. During training camp at St. Vincent’s the team members are not allowed to leave campus.
ButterflyDragon on April 16, 2010 at 5:53 PM

She grew up in Pittsburgh and is an avid Steeler fan. I may have the timing off–it could be before or after camp, I don’t know. But I assure you that she is not confused. She knows who the players, coaches, and owners are.

I must repeat, again, that doofpundit is completely clueless and I have no idea why he continues to be an analyst on here. He never, ever knows what he’s talking about.

Of COURSE they shouted about money, I was near the protests both there and at the slrc, and all the shouting was about money, funding, rich people, etc.

That doofpundit is so naive as to think “insults about money” somehow means robbery, or something, just shows again, why he should be replaced with ANY other commenter on here.

If you want to actually know what is going on, stop listening to doofpundit and check out:

Also from the anarchist’s website:

A few weeks ago, an acquaintance of mine attended a police lineup, pointed at someone, and sent them to jail or prison. Last night, a friend’s roommate called the cops about something happening outside, and the effect of that action was a young man getting tasered.

Meanwhile, this blog reports that liberal callers to his radio show are blaming the victims, saying they must have been drunk, yadda yadda yadda.

Concealed carry.

If you can’t carry concealed where you live, open carry.

If you can’t carry concealed or open where you live, carry concealed.

Why do some people get so excited about a post they didn’t even read?

exception on April 16, 2010 at 7:37 PM

it is just the locals generic hate.

Sir Napsalot on April 16, 2010 at 4:59 PM

Why are you assuming it’s locals?

I used to live in that city. 99.99% of the drunks picking fights with other people and vomiting all over your shoes in the Quarter are TOURISTS from elesewhere who go to NO to act like animals. Unless they have to go down there to work, locals stay away from the Quarter precisely to avoid getting beaten up by roving bands of alcohol-crazed out-of-staters just looking to jump ugly on somebody! I’m serious.

Allah got a lot of grief here the other day for merely suggesting there was a possibility that it might have been just an ‘old-fashioned New Orleans brawl’ but, given that we still don’t have any real evidence to indicate a motive, the odds are pretty good now that it was indeed just that.

And, to be fair, it’s not just tourists in the French Quarter who can get pretty nasty when they binge on that liquid machismo stuff.

I waited tables at a music club in Austin TX one summer. I have seen first hand how physically aggressive some people get when they get drunk & they need no provocation to do it. Politics is the last thing on these idiots’ marinated brains when they get the sudden irrational urge to punch somebody else’s lights out.

In fact, we’re probably attributing far too much cerebral capacity to the freaks who do this stuff by suggesting they needed any incitement whatsoever to pummel anybody who merely happens to pass through their field of vision when that urge hits.

The anarchists had both opportunity and motive. Does that mean they’re guilty for sure? No. But there is zero evidence to back up your assertion that it was an “old-fashioned brawl”.

New Orleans: a town full of animals, just one step above the primordial swamp.

Exhibit A for universal concealed carry.

danish, doofpundit is an ignoramus. I am in the french quarter constantly as I live in the gulf coast, and I have no idea what “old fashioned new orleans brawl” he is referring to. This is but more proof that he has no idea what he’s talking about. I was a few blocks away when this happened.

But I also just looked on michelle malkin’s site, and she seems just as clueless as doofpundit about it.

“This was a terrible crime in the crime-infested French Quarter. ”

Crime infested french quarter? The crime is not in the french quarter, particularly where this occurred. I have walked around the st louis cathedral at 12-3am in the morning and never even seen a crime.

This is what happens when know it alls project this idea to places they have no experience or understanding of, but only an understanding from a distance.

JohnGalt23 on April 16, 2010 at 8:11 PM

Yet another classic doofus. A female friend of mine from California was staying nearby the french quarter at a hotel for the two weeks around this event, and has a completely different view of it than you.

You guys really should stop believing everything you hear on the news by people who couldn’t find new orleans on the map.

For what it’s worth, I DID see terry moron that night on bourbon street and wanted to ask him about saying obama had two dads, but he got away before I could catch up.
