CNN: Darn it, this free speech at Tea Party rallies might just be protected
posted at 10:12 am on April 16, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
CNN reminds its readers today that dissent is patriotic barely tolerable in the Age of Obama. In a report after the Tax Day Tea Parties grabbed so much attention, the news network — which also relies on the First Amendment — spends quite a bit of column space fretting over voter anger expressed at … well, peaceful public assemblies:
Letting disgruntled citizens vent is important to national security, experts say, but some messages emanating from angry Americans in recent weeks have pressed the boundaries of free speech. …
But the angry rhetoric is not isolated to fringe groups. Both mainstream liberal and conservative camps have joined the chorus, and while some of the language sounds threatening, most of it is protected.
As the Tea Party held its April 15 tax day protest against government spending, related groups were planning an April 19 protest at Fort Hunt National Park near Alexandria, Virginia. The purpose of the latter, the groups say, is to “restore the Constitution,” and the location was chosen because it is the nearest point to Washington where firearms can be carried openly.
What makes this article so laughable is how little of it has anything to do with the demonstrations themselves. There isn’t a single quote from any of the rallies in it. Instead, CNN talks about the fringe lunacy that occurs in activism on both the Left and the Right in order to paint the Tea Parties themselves as some sort of explosion of militia fervor, when anyone who attended these rallies know that’s not at all the case.
It does, however, contain a thinly-veiled slam at the Southern Poverty Law Center, one of the hard-Left organizations that have been trying to turn Tea Parties into the latest boogeyman (emphasis mine):
A recent report from the Southern Poverty Law Center says Patriot groups — which the center defines as “militias and other extremist organizations that see the federal government as their enemy” — are on the rise, and it loosely lumps in Tea Party organizations with the hate groups.
Yes, “loosely” is a loaded, editorial comment — but in this case, accurate. The SPLC has been reduced to using scare tactics and demagoguery for some time now, and even CNN can’t avoid criticizing their Chicken Little shrieking.
However, the rest of the article is mainly noteworthy for its inadvertent humor. For instance, we have the usual people getting the usual PC vapors over the use of language in politics:
[Dr. Jerrold] Post said he is concerned, however, about messages coming from the conservative base. Last month, GOP chief Michael Steele called for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to be put on “the firing line,” and House Minority Leader John Boehner said that a congressman “might be a dead man” because of his health care vote.
“I find some of this rhetoric recently — ‘reload’ — quite scary,” Post said of a Twitter post by Sarah Palin directing followers to her Facebook page, which had crosshairs on the districts of 20 congressmen who voted for the controversial health care bill. “Some people are going to hear that as, ‘Take up your arms.’ “
Gee, it’s a good thing that Dr. Post never bothered to watch television in the US between 1966 and 1999, when William F. Buckley hosted a show called … “The Firing Line.” It was such a radical and dangerous show that it won an Emmy in 1969. These phrases are commonly used in politics, and have been for decades. Only when the commentariat decided to paint voter unhappiness over the radical agenda and skyrocketing spending of Democrats in power as something dangerous did the media decide to parse the linguistics of politics.
And again, none of these quotes even came from the rallies themselves. If CNN couldn’t find anything objectionable at the Tea Party rallies, despite embedding a producer and reporter in them, then why run this story at all?
Update: HA reader Pam Meister from Big Hollywood asks: “Say, didn’t CNN used to have a program called … Crossfire?”

1.) For starters, CNN could report how Leftists broke Allee Butsch’s leg and her boyfriend’s jaw as they left the Republican meeting in New Orleans. If AN AIDE TO A DEMOCRAT GOVERNOR WERE ASSAULTED IN THIS MANNER, IT WOULD BE IN SCREAMING BANNER HEADLINES FOR MONTHS.
2.) The Southern Poverty Law Center is a fund-raising operation all about obtaining Southern Wealth to pay for Morris Dee’s Al Gore-esque mansion and lifestyle.
The over-the-top rhetoric it uses on anyone to the right of David Gergen would qualify it as a Hate Organization…by its own standard!
3.) Here is Bill Clinton pleading for civility…by comparing Tea Partiers to Tim McVeigh. Still trying to pin it on Rush.
Didn’t he have a Permanent Campaign operation called “the War Room”?

“…experts say,” I love that. “We don’t know enough about free speech to form an opinion, so we had to track down a free speech expert.”
And “pressed the boundaries of free speech”?! Strippers? Free speech. COnstitutionally protected God-given right? Hmmm… what are the boundaries there…?

You don’t get it…you agree with “points”, but then in the same post or later you diss those points.
Example: Government spending money…but okay to buy you insurance.
Government inept in every industry they have tried to run…Insurance companies are evil, the government will be better.
You are inconsistent…you can’t embrace government, embrace their takeover of health care, and pretend you are a Tea Partier.
See, that alone show how naive and inept you are…simply limit government, and when has that been done?
You embrace socialism, because you have learned to depend on it…which is why you are perfect for Ca.
Now go back onto your porch, have a cig and finish your Krispy Kremes…

Socialism is Generally defined as a period of CHANGE between Capitalism and Communism where the government incrementally takes over more and more of the economy and either Owns it (Communism) or controls it (Fascism).
How it that different than what the Democratic National Socialist Party is doing now?

Ed,
Not only did the DNC use the exact same “target” map as Palin, Buckley’s Firing Line, CNN’s Crossfire and Clinton’s War Room…but the google ad on this post is for PBS’s “Frontline”!

If you think only “true” teapartiers are those who disagree with the need to limit the insurance industry on healthcare practices, then….you’re right.
But I don’t hear that, and I’m still going to attend.
I hear a lot of voices who DO hear people like me.
We know reform was needed. We disagree with the reform that emerged.
We want real change.
And, no, we’re not all like “you.”
And you won’t get me to vote for “your” candidates, either.
Too right-wing, La-Rouche-like.
I’ll make my own choices, thank you.

That doesn’t answer the question, how does Obama’s version of Nationalizing and controlling the economy differ from other societies that have Nationalized and controlled the economy?

But, unlike you, most of us are willing to live in reality and face real dangers. Fascist control of the means of production possibly leading to ultimate socialist ownership of same is a real danger. Your refusal to see what’s in front of your face says nothing about “the Right” and says much about your myopia.

But I think the most disturbing part of this article and the Leftist commenters is there premise that Tea Partiers are “sore losers”. Somehow, because they deem them having “lost” some election — even though they’re just American citizens, not elected officials — that they should just be quiet or not express any concerns over government they may… See More have from here on out. I take it they think that’s what they did during the previous 9 years. I can attest by some emails my Leftist friends sent with Bush/Republican HATE-filled literature, this is not the case at all. For Leftists, hate is a one-way street, and the ends justify their means. It’s not hate coming from them because their “hearts” are full of “compassion”. It’s sad, but it’s not going to make people sit down and be quiet.

Howard Zinn in an interview with TomPaine.com “Dissent is the highest form of patriotism” in reference to his
protesting Bush and his Iraq war policies.
The left likes to talk about the Tea Party movement as a radical group of old white KKK members who are only motivated by the fact that the President is BLACK. We are engaging in the worst and most hate speech in history. The link at the top is to pictures of Bush haters and their signs threatening the President, attempting to incite others to commit violence and even Senator John Kerry (who served in Vietnam) making the comment suggesting he could kill bush. No arrest, no bad press, no problem to the Left Media or the Democrat Party. I am a tea Party Member, I do not like the direction the country is headed, I think we are over taxed, I think it is not in our best interest to continue to run budget shortfalls and to continue to raise the National Debt. Do I care if Obama is Black, no, do I want him harmed, no, the worst thing that ever happened to The United States in modern time was the assassination of President Kennedy. We are look up to by other nations with envy because we have the most peaceful leadership changes in the world.

Face it boy. You and your fellow Poly Sci/Moron Studies types just aren’t bright enough to pull it off. Rush had a PSA on yesterday mentioning prerequisites of bathing, grooming, and dressing, among other things.
Too bad, boy, you’re so much of a pu$$y, to never have an ability to take on the tea partiers on their ideas. Too bad, little one, you’ll just never have what it takes, to go mano a mano. Must suck to be you.

An inflitrator at our local tea party as well. A young white guy handing out white supremacists literature. Funny thing, instead of embracing him, the MC of the event identified him, disavowed him and then the people near him started pointing at him, everyone started backing away and pointing, some saying “Shame”, others “Not one of us”. He ends up literally running away after finding himself in the middle of a large empty space surrounded by people pointing at him and disavowing everything he was doing.
I’m pretty sure the car he ran to and jumped in, had one of those “CoExist” (with various symbols making up most of the letters) bumper stickers on it, right above the one saying “Bush lied, People Died” – but that may have just been wishful thinking (since I didn’t really see where he went).
We did have the “anti” folks out there displying their ignorance and stupidity by repeating the “Obama CUT taxes”, etc talking points – of course they are the ones who ended up on T.V.!

Speaking of racist, a paternalistic white TV ditz insinuating that a black man should be feeling uncomfortable for not thinking like the paternalistic white ditz, would be racist. In every way, shape, and form.
Come to think of it, the Klan would think black people should be uncomfortable, for not thinking like them, right angryed?

So was I. As a matter of fact, I happened to be among 3-4 people who were interviewed by CNN. A woman with notebook, guy with huge video camera, started asking questions, and then attendees started answering the questions by conversing with each other, so the CNN people told us to keep conversing like they weren’t there, so 3 more of us joined in.
They filmed us discussing for about 15 minutes. Everyone in the conversation was dressed normally, looked like normal middle-aged people, and knew their stuff: Constitution, free market, government takeovers, bloated bureaucracy, foreign policy, how to put teaparty values into the government….we touched on all of it, and it was such a well-informed articulate conversation, I do think it will be impossible for CNN to get any soundbites to make any of us look crazy or ignorant. I really do.
I know they won’t air all or even most of it, but we’ll see if they air any of it.
I wish I had captured in myself but I was too busy participating.

Thanks for the photos — that was great! I chuckle at the irony of the all-white group of crashers and their signs about how racist the Tea Party is. It looked like a pretty multicultural bunch to me. More than the crashers, anyway!
Also, what is it with liberals that they always look so disheveled?

And darn it! if the democrats can’t find anything derogatory to accuse the tea partiers of, they’ll just make it up. And keep running with it and running with it. And now that idiot Bill Clinton is trying to insinuate and smear the tea party movement by linking it to the Oklahoma City bombings. What a tool! And the Headlines listings above with the HuffPo postings of the most vile and offensive tea party signs (which they aren’t). I think they’re very clever and interesting – not the obscene, nasty, hateful stuff the left, Daily Kooks, huffers, etc. use/used against President Bush, Sarah Palin, and republicans.

The problem with all of this is that it isn’t going to go away.
Leftists will still be working to wreck the country culturally and bankrupt us economically. They’ll still be trying to reduce our public schools to indoctrination camps.
Normal Americans may be angry right now, and we might even succeed in pushing the leftists back for a time, but they’ll still be there. The communists in the 50′s were pushed back and morphed into the “new left” of the 60′s, which were again pushed back and morphed into the “bleeding heart liberals” of the 70′s. Reagan really made them scramble to redefine themselves, and it took them a while, but here they are now yet again.
No matter what we do, they just keep coming back. Each time the re-brand themselves they are able to attract enough of the naive, the young, and the foolish to their side to cause problems.
Right now about 1 person in 5 is a self-described leftist. As long as this is true it won’t matter what the tea parties do. It won’t matter if the leftard dems get swept out of congress. As long as the leftists have a permanent and significant demographic presence in the American political system they will continue to wreak havoc upon us.
The only way that our country will be made whole again is if the leftists themselves are reduced in number and influence.
I really do think that it is high time we start targeting them. Not for violence, but for other kinds of punishment. If we know that a company or other organization tends to be leftist in nature, we avoid it. We avoid spending our dollars there. If it is a public institution then we work to get its funding cut. Put the hurt to these people where they will feel it: their wallets. Make them feel unwelcome. Make them feel that they are pariahs. Shame them. They should feel ashamed and it is high time we made them to feel that way.
