Lefty at tea party: Obama hasn’t raised taxes, wingnuts!

posted at 5:28 pm on April 15, 2010 by Allahpundit

Sorry that this is the best I can do for you by way of video from today’s rallies thus far. I figured that “Crash the Tea Party” moron would have people running around in SS uniforms or something, but now that he’s under investigation by the school district that employs him, perhaps the crashing scheme has crashed. For now we’ll make do with this guy spouting a persistent myth, persistent enough in fact to end up as a question in the NYT’s “let’s bait the wingnuts” survey of tea partiers. Has Obama raised taxes? Well, he hasn’t raised the marginal rate on income taxes — or rather, he hasn’t yet — but as Jacob Sullum reminds us, that wasn’t what he promised during the campaign. He promised that he wouldn’t raise any taxes on households making less than $250K. And that promise, like so many others, was swept away long ago:

Obama broke this promise barely two weeks into his presidency by signing a bill that included a 156-percent increase in the federal cigarette tax, which not only hits the nonwealthy but is one of the most regressive taxes around. By ATR’s count, the health care bill Obama signed last month includes another seven tax hikes that affect the under-$250,000-a-year crowd. In fact, since four of these changes will increase people’s income tax bills, they violate even the edited version of Obama’s pledge that he presented on Saturday. For example, as Peter Suderman noted last week, the law raises the threshold for deducting medical expenses from 7.5 percent of income to 10 percent. As a result, people with substantial medical expenses will pay more income tax. But as I noted in a column last November, “When the president does it, it’s not a tax.”

The split between tea partiers and the general population on whether most Americans’ taxes have increased under Obama was one of the most dramatic of the poll: Just 34 percent of average joes said they have versus 64 percent of TPers, which, ironically, was offered tacitly as evidence of how paranoid and ill-informed those darned wingers are. Why the Times particularly cares whether taxes have gone up yet when (a) they’re metaphysically certain to go up soon to try to put a dent in America’s debt (Frum offers three stealth possibilities for new taxes) and (b) the fact that Obama hasn’t kept spending in step with lower taxes is the reason we have record deficits, I simply don’t know. But as you watch this video, bear this bittersweet thought in mind: This is the last Tax Day you’ll ever experience where this tool will even attempt this argument. Per Robert Samuelson, it’s all downhill from here.

Associated Press, April 1, 2009:

WASHINGTON (AP) – One of President Barack Obama’s campaign pledges on taxes went up in puffs of smoke Wednesday.

The largest increase in tobacco taxes took effect despite Obama’s promise not to raise taxes of any kind on families earning under $250,000 or individuals under $200,000.

Great signs at the Chicago Tea Party. Loons marching around with signs saying “Free Education on Demand”. A lady quickly wrote a new sign saying “Free Lunch on Demand” and made sure she positioned herself next to the loons for photo ops.

BTW–one racial incident, my white friend was shoved by a black lady with an anti-Glenn Beck poster. Caught in on camera.

You have to understand how liberals think. If they would like to raise your taxes 100% and end up only raising them 90% you got a tax cut.

1. Patriots pay taxes.
2. President Obama nominated multiple people to high government office who had not paid their taxes.
3. President Obama likes surrounding himself with people who are unpatriotic.

Did you know the government gets all the gravy?
Did you know the citizens pay all the taxes?
Oh, a citizen’s unpatriotic if he doesn’t want the government to strip his pay check clean
Oh, a citizen’s unpatriotic if he doesn’t want the government’s spending to turn his dollar’s value very lean

You can grab a Timothy Geithner or a Charlie Rangle and you show him a tax bill lien
He says: “What does it mean, that I never have seen!”
So you grab a Kennedy, with his money in an offshore tax haven, and not one in a million can identify

So I say to you: “Why do we got to have so much taxes?”
Multiple taxes, income taxes, sales taxes, carbon taxes, property taxes, VAT taxes???
Taxes, sucking taxes!!
Nothing but sucking taxes!!!

(Taxes, taxes, taxes, taxes, taxes, taxes, taxes,
taxes, taxes, taxes, taxes, taxes, taxes)

Right now medical deductions can be had above 7.5% of AGI.

Starting next year, that number goes to 10% of AGI as written in the ObamaCare bill.

This is regardless of income.

Which means that anyone who has any major medical expenses starting next year just got a tax increase.

That is fact lefties.

The Hill reports

“Taxpayers earning less than $200,000 a year will pay roughly $3.9 billion more in taxes—in 2019 alone—due to healthcare reform, according to the Joint Committee on Taxation, Congress’s official scorekeeper.
The new law raises $15.2 billion over 10 years by limiting the medical expense deduction, a provision widely used by taxpayers who either have a serious illness or are older.
Taxpayers can currently deduct medical expenses in excess of 7.5 percent of their adjusted gross income. Starting in 2013, most taxpayers will only be able to deduct expenses greater than 10 percent of AGI. Older taxpayers are hit by this threshold increase in 2017.
Once the law is fully implemented in 2019, the JCT estimates the deduction limitation will affect 14.8 million taxpayers — 14.7 million of them will earn less than $200,000 a year. These taxpayers are single and joint filers, as well as heads of households.”

CWforFreedom on April 15, 2010 at 7:58 PM

However, at least he is being honest about his belief. No matter how wrong he is he does have every right to express his opinion.

Obama raised the Fed tax on cigarettes on Feb, 5 2009.

This guy claming Obama hasn’t raised ANY taxes is like trying to say the sun DIDN’T came up this morning.

Agree with the tax or not, that is irrelevant to the topic of did Obama raise ANY Federal tax.

Obama tax pledge

“I can make a firm pledge,” he said in Dover, N.H., on Sept. 12. “Under my plan, no family making less than $250,000 a year will see any form of tax increase. Not your income tax, not your payroll tax, not your capital gains taxes, not any of your taxes.”

“not any of your taxes”

He raise the Federal Tax on cigarettes, that is undeniable, and yes he broke his solemn pledge not to raise ANY Federal Tax.

Its not even debatable!

My recall is that (on many occasions), Obama stated that taxes would not be raised one dime on the under $250K crowd. So, if their taxes go up for any value other than $0.10, Obama spake the truth, right? Well, that’s how he and his handlers probably see it.

malclave on April 15, 2010 at 7:08 PM

Actually it started sooner than next year. I was just in the hospital for a couple of days. I did not have to ask or even bring up the subject, but it was mentioned by almost every nurse and technition I had that they were upset that hospitals were having to pay the additional taxes now, long before the programs that will use the taxes begin. I think it goes with out question as to who’s bills some of those taxes just got added to. That, for those liberals who don’t see it, is the beginning of increased cost for medical care hitting my pocket in the form of paying a tax increase. It also means the hospital will need to cut cost now, which means cutting staff and services which means loss of more jobs. I figure that is why I was hearing it mentioned so often.
Next year I will get to pay an additional share of taxes again, on top of what I will be paying now.
