Endgame: Jeb Bush slams Crist, Connie Mack resigns as campaign chairman
posted at 9:56 pm on April 15, 2010 by Allahpundit
Rarely will we devote three posts in a day to a single state race but there’s a campaign imploding in real time here. First Jeb administers the kiss of death:
I am disappointed by the veto of Senate Bill 6. By taking this action, Governor Crist has jeopardized the ability of Florida to build on the progress of the last decade, which includes raising student achievement across the board, narrowing the achievement gap for poor and minority students, and improving graduation rates. Florida’s sustained improvement is the result of bold reforms that were challenging, controversial and sometimes even unpopular. Reform is hard work but without a commitment to change, Florida would not be 8th in the nation today.
And then Mack abandons ship:
Gov. Charlie Crist’s political mentor, former U.S. Sen. Connie Mack, resigned Thursday as Crist’s campaign chairman in his race for the U.S. Senate…
“As you know, I strongly disagree with your veto,” Mack wrote his fellow Republican. “Your veto I believe undermines our education system in Florida and the principles for which I have always stood.”
Mack went on to say that Crist’s decision to veto the bill was “unsupportable and wrong.”
“As you can understand, I can no longer serve as chairman for your campaign for the United States Senate,” Mack wrote.
I know today’s veto was a big deal but it surely wasn’t so big that Mack would cut ties to his own protege over it in an act of conscience. Either he’s using this as a pretext to head for the lifeboats because the Republican nomination is now officially unwinnable or Crist’s told him privately that he’s running as an independent and Mack refuses to go against the party. Either way, Crist’s days as a Republican Senate candidate are over. Say, John Cornyn — you and the NRSC endorsed Crist almost a year ago, didn’t you? How are you feeling this fine evening?
Cornyn says the governor will face an intense backlash from the Republican establishment if he runs as an independent.
“I would think that would be the end of his political career as a Republican,” Cornyn, chairman of the NRSC, told POLITICO. “So I doubt that will happen. My hope is that this is all resolved in the Republican primary by Florida voters.”
Cornyn said that Crist would be a “man without a party” if he decided to mount a three-way race against Rubio and Democratic Rep. Kendrick Meek, who is pursuing his party’s nomination in the state.
“And I think he’s got other potential and aspirations, so I think from that standpoint, it would be a bad decision,” Cornyn said.
Exit question: I know Crist is momentarily leading a three-way race, but how does that play in the long run once voters watch him break his vow not to run as an indie? Even if there’s 30 percent willing to vote for him right now, is there a donor base among those people? Rubio’s fundraising is skyrocketing and will soar further once grassroots conservatives get motivated to punish a traitor to the party. How does he possibly sustain this lead, especially with Kendrick Meek starting to assert himself?

Gov. Charlie Crist is just one of a slew of RINO’s that need to be purged from our party.
Taking back is easier

I know he probably thinks what he’s doing is like Lieberman when Lamont won the D primary in CT, but it’s really not. Lieberman was being punished by the nutroots in the form of Lamont for Lieberman voting his conscious on national security issues.
Crist & Rubio are in an open primary, yeah, Crist is governor, but Rubio was already an established commodity in FL too. Crist just expected to be handed the Senate seat, and now is acting like a toddler throwing a tantrum. Crist stuck his finger in the wind last year, trying to ride the Obadiah wave, not because he really believed in what was being sold. He’s done the same thing now, it’s all tactics, no principle.
He’s actually a perfect example of the soulless and principleless professional politician that the country is so tired of. I don’t care what the poll said this morning, the voters aren’t going to elect coreless politicians this fall.

Combination of a great campaign by Rubio, and an atrocious campaign by Crist, combined with this unaccountable veto of a bill he used to support, have turned Crist into electoral roadkill.
Flip-flopper extraordinaire Crist will have few loyalists if he resorts to running as an independent, especially after initially denying that he would, and any poll numbers he has now are sure to drop further.

I don,t why people are surprised by Crist actions .This is what all good little RINOS do.When they can,t win playing by the rules they want to change the rules or take there ball and go home so no one can win. This bitter little orange man is so full of himself he thinks the people of Fla.are so stupid for not sending him to the US Sen.

Of course you don’t get it. You are not of the people, you are of the blogosphere that started off with promise but is quickly trying to claim a place in the self annointed political elite. mack left because crist’s veto was just cheap a political maneuver to benefit himself and had nothing to do with the issue. This is what crist has done for his entire political career, I have never voted for the scumbag because he stands for nothing but his perceived direction of the wind. What crist just doesn’t get is that whether he runs as an independent or makes a quick switch to the democrat party, these liberal teachers will never vote for him against a long time democrat. Without political office crist is done. He is literally too stupid to be a lobbyist or commentator. crist makes joe biden look like a nuclear physicist.
peacenprosperity on April 16, 2010 at 7:19 AM
Crist has to file his petitions and/or filing fee if he wants to run as an indie by April 30th. He has to come up with 7000 bucks from what I can tell to do it.
Credo on April 16, 2010 at 7:22 AM
He married a rich divorce’ so money isn’t a problem unless she has started to catch on to the sham already. crist married her because he thought it might help in his bid to become vp with mccain. After crist loses within one year they will be divorced.
peacenprosperity on April 16, 2010 at 7:25 AM
Crist runs as in indie, he can kiss his career as a politician in Florida goodbye–the only office he’d be able to hold would be as one of the Bambi regime’s pet Republicans–Republicans in Florida will disown him completely.

Crist doesn’t stand on principles, he stands on whatever will help him win the next election.
John Deaux on April 16, 2010 at 8:12 AM
But you are OK with Rubio just telling you what you want to hear to get elected? Gimmie a break.
Squid Shark on April 16, 2010 at 8:14 AM
That’s what politicians do. All of them say what they think the people want to hear then do what they damn well please. Gov. Crist has the misfortune of actually having to do things as governor. What you say about Mr. Rubio might be 100% true but Gov. Crist is doing things that people don’t like now. There is nothing stopping him from explaining why he vetoed the bill and how it needs to be made better. He has the bully pulpit.
Cindy Munford on April 16, 2010 at 8:23 AM
I’m glad the bill as it was written was vetoed by Crist, but it won’t get me to vote for him. If he does go independent, though, I can safely de-list from the Republican party. I only joined so I could vote for Rubio in the primary.
entropent on April 16, 2010 at 8:24 AM
Aw, come on SS. At least he’s playing the right part. We’re putting on a production of Guys and Dolls and Crist is playing Tony from West Side Story because he likes that part better.
He’s not even on the same page anymore…what happened to this guy?

Did you go to the Landing for the Tea party last night? My brother went but I haven’t talked to him and of course there is nothing bon the news or internet about it.
peacenprosperity on April 16, 2010 at 8:37 AM
Would Rubio have vetoed the Education Reform Bill?
WordsMatter on April 16, 2010 at 8:38 AM
The Husband and I did indeed go to the Landing. I haven’t looked for news but I would think WOKV would have something since the sort of sponsored it. Nice crowd, maybe not as big as last year but certainly respectable. I was amazed at how many younger people with babies and little children were there. I took a couple of pictures of a cute little guy in a stroller wearing a t-shirt that said “I am too young to be in debt”. On the complaint end, either better sound system or better people running it.

The last candidate who tried to ingratiate himself with the teachers’ unions — McBride, who ran for Governor against Bush in ’92 — got clobbered in the general election.
Let’s hope history repeats itself in this Senate race.
Nichevo on April 16, 2010 at 9:01 AM
I am not sure about the intelligence of anyone courting the unions in a Right to Work state. If nothing else I am not particularly impressed with Gov. Crist as a strategist.

Crist sure do like making a fool of himself.

Oh, and McBride was unlikable and had never held Public Office before.
Not the same situation.

Who knows? Rubio has not made a difficult decision in his entire political career. When faced with the biggest challenge of his speakership, the budget crisis of 07, he voted “present”

“Hey, honey, what’s all this orange goo on our front bumper?”
Extrafishy on April 16, 2010 at 10:20 AM
Well, part of that is because it’s the teacher’s union, a little different than any other union. Mainly because for some unknown reason, teachers are put on a pedestal in this country even while the quality of the education in this country continues to decline in relation to the rest of the world.
It’s like teachers are some kind of baby Jesus that it’s heresy to say anything negative about them or the education system.
That plays up to the general population unfortunately. Having teachers go door to door and equating their treatment to someone kicking puppies works. After all, who wants to be known for supporting someone that kicks puppies?
ButterflyDragon on April 16, 2010 at 11:15 AM
I have worked with teachers and given tests to teachers, it’s frightening out there. I don’t mean to generalize since I am sure the majority are competent but when you see the ones that aren’t on a large scale it shades your view.
Cindy Munford on April 16, 2010 at 11:32 AM
And of course, we would never elect someone who makes a habit of voting “Present“…that would just be acting stupidly.

I think parents have never been questioned to decide whose side they are on. Their child or the teacher with student scores showing how they are going down.
And when you do challenge their ignorance these teachers and administrators answer like children. (“Because I said so.”)

The St. Pete Times has been pitting Crist against Rubio for weeks now, hoping to destroy both candidates. As the paper strongly supports the veto (appropriate for a shameless liberal rag), some of the various editors began tipping their hands in support of Crist and his previous hints of running as an independent.
Expect this to be a nasty race.

My nephew can not speak Spanish. He was failing in kinder. What kid fails in kindergarten? Well, he was placed in a bilingual class (all spanish speaking only students) and he understood nothing. My sister in law tried to have him moved to an all English class. The response from teacher and viceprincipal was:
1. State law states students per teacher ratio. He was the last kid out and because his last name was spanish he was blessed with this decision.
2. She should be greatful they were teaching him native language
3. He will learn his heritage by being around his own
Needless to say, my sister in law was not happy. She gave them a piece of her mind and they refused to speak to her. All communication was to go through my brother and the principal. He told her to bless someone else with that decision. And the principal said she could not do and that my nephew had to stay in his class because she said so.

Charlie is toast…
I would rather see a Democrat like Alan Grasyon in the Senate seat over Charlie Crist. At least you know what you are gonna get with him.
Crist is a pandering RINO who always has his finger in the air trying to follow the political winds.
Here’s hoping Rubio cleans his clock…
JohnBG on April 16, 2010 at 12:54 PM
Keep fightin’ the good fight. These threads are why I don’t come around here much anymore. This bill was absolute crap, would have cost jobs (graduate schools of education might as well have shut down in Florida), and there was nothing “conservative” about it — how to pay teachers is best left to the local district. This bill was inherently radical in its nature and a cheap ploy by its writers.
T.D.D. on April 16, 2010 at 1:34 PM
It would be smart of Gov. Crist to discuss how the bill could be improved so that he can sign it. But if he vetoed the bill strictly to get the teachers behind him then this is a really bad move. So far the only problem I have heard him discuss about the bill is Special Education students and teacher which are normally governed by Individual Education Plans (IEP) directed by the federal government in order for the school to get additional funding and not subject to variations by the states.
Cindy Munford on April 16, 2010 at 2:09 PM
That is the most over the top and ridiculous statement yet. You must be a teacher. But now that I think about it, that may not be a bad idea. Boot all the idiot professors of “education” especially if we have any in Florida as useless and full of it as bill ayers, and rethink the qualifications of those allowed to teach. In alot of counties in Florida the physicists from NASA about to be unemployed would not be hired to teach science in an elementary school because they don’t have a degree in “education”.
