McCain: It might be time for Obama to “pull the trigger” on Iran
posted at 7:05 pm on April 14, 2010 by Allahpundit
A reminder from Maverick — or rather, the Artist Formerly Known as Maverick — that there are, perhaps, more pressing issues than nonbinding unenforceable agreements with rational regimes.
McCain opened a Senate hearing Wednesday by saying that Iran will get the bomb unless the U.S. acts more boldly. The Arizona Republican said the U.S. keeps pointing a loaded gun at Iran, but it is failing to “pull the trigger.”
The U.S. government has prepared a new, classified assessment of Iran’s nuclear capability and intent, but it has not released it yet. Military and intelligence officials who testified before Congress Wednesday would not publicly address whether the U.S. has changed its 4-year-old assessment that Iran isn’t actively seeking to make a bomb.
Gen. James Cartwright, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told the Senate Armed Services Committee that Iran could have a deliverable nuclear weapon in three to five years, going a step further than Defense Secretary Gates, who told reporters Tuesday that Iran could make a nuclear weapon within a year.
A footnote to that three-to-five-year estimate: It could be sooner if Iran’s working simultaneously on the bomb and a delivery system. Which, incidentally, is a good reason not to be too hard on the White House for hyping the threat of nuclear terror even though there’s apparently no new intel on that front lately. With the way we’re going on Iran, there’s bound to be some new intel sooner or later.
We haven’t blogged much recently on the great Iran clusterfark, mainly because “west threatens sanctions as Tehran inches closer to bomb” stories are always in season and ripe for picking, but it’s worth noting how many provocations the Islamic republic’s been up to of late. Today, the day after the big nuke photo op in D.C. concluded, they announced that they’ve enriched their first batch of uranium to 20 percent. That’s not weapons grade, but it’s a step in the right direction. Yesterday they claimed without elaborating that they’re a month away from joining the “nuclear club” and last week they unveiled third-generation centrifuges designed to enrich uranium at a much faster rate. Just this afternoon, our partners in peace in Moscow announced that a new reactor in Bushehr will be online by the end of summer; meanwhile, Syria’s reportedly shipping scud missiles to Hezbollah, a.k.a. Iran’s proxy in Lebanon. Oh, and here’s a confidence booster: The Iranian parliament just passed a law limiting its own power to review regulations passed by the regime’s unelected clerical institutions, thus nudging the country that little bit closer to unabashed dictatorship. In sum, my crazy hunch is that the threat of sanctions is not, in fact, having the desired deterrent effect.
Which poses the question: Is Maverick right that it’s time to pull the trigger? The latest poll, from Fox News, shows heavy support for military action, but I’ll bet that at least part of the public thinks a raid on the reactors will be similar to Clinton’s bombing campaign in Kosovo — no risk to Americans and high reward if it’s successful. Not true, of course, as a recent wargame illustrated: U.S. troops in Iraq would be at risk of an Iranian counterattack, Saudi oil fields would be targeted by Iran to wreak economic havoc, and by almost all assessments, the damage done to their nuclear program would only be a temporary setback. In other words, it’s actually high risk and potentially low reward and The One understands only too well what the practical (and political) consequences of that calculus will be. So no one’s pulling the trigger; the plan is, and will remain, sanctions plus finger-crossing for regime change until Netanyahu finally decides he can’t wait any longer for western support. Good luck, Bibi!

If he is becoming ‘the artist formerly known as Maverick’, he will need a symbol for his name. I suggest either a feather or a flip-flop.
Btw, to go from 3% enriched to 20% is to cover about 90% of the distance to weapons grade enrichment. Not good, not good at all.

I don’t believe Obama is a pacifist. As cold and calculating as he’s been his short time in office I have no doubt he could be quite ruthless. Progressives have historically been the war mongers. He just hasn’t found the right target yet … besides us I mean.

Knucklehead on April 14, 2010 at 7:16 PM
Might want to amend that bolded part in light of the fact that a popular uprising against the regime took place last year, and the subsequent beatings and voter fraud in Iran wasn’t enough to force Obama to cancel the hotdog summit. Only when a video of a woman dying in the hands of her father, after being shot by Iranian regime thugs, did Obama come to the conclusion that maybe din-din with Iran wasn’t such a hot dog idea. I do think, however, that Obama wants Israel to make the first move…

It depends on what the meaning of “pull the trigger” is.
It will be kind of marginally interesting, in a peripheral and unimportant kind of way, to see if Obama can get McCain onboard for “tough sanctions,” and get The Mav to christen whatever “tough sanctions” amount to as “pulling the trigger.”
The last I saw, “tough sanctions” will mean almost nothing beyond the measures already taken under the previous three rounds of UN sanctions. Foreswearing the sale of dual-use materials to Iran hasn’t prevented her nuclear progress to date, and it isn’t going to.
But if O can get Mav to call it “pulling the trigger,” it will at least sound kind of Top-Gun-ish (or, more appropriately for McCain, Strike U-ish).

Nice try, Mac. Running for reelection is a beotch, isn’t it.
No one is going to pull the trigger on Iran. They’re going to have their bombs. The entire world knows it. After all these years, hand ringing and parlour games guessing how long it will take them and how many sanctions we can bring to bear.
The Jews are on their own. Nothing could be more clear especially with this anti semitic administration. That sentiment starts from the top down. Europe is no help as Iran is one of Germany’s biggest trading partners. Back door deals as always with most of Europe as they pretend to be concerned about Israel.
The better tactic for Mac is to turn his attention to OUR southern border, insist on building the walls both virtual and real, clamp down on illegal immigration and demand that our laws be adhered to. Nah, can’t do that!
There is a reason why McCain never achieved the office he sought. He’s not very bright, and he’s a stupid politician.

We do, however, move on. As far as Mac’s behavior in politics is concerned I find him less than admirable. He pi$$es on his base, used Palin (glad for that), and he is pathetic in this race to be reelected. He’s another Byrd or Thurmond in the making. Maybe Lindsey will change his diapers and wheel him into the Senate so he can rant and rave until he becomes completely senseless.

I weep today because my president, Barack Obama, in a few weeks has changed the relationship between the US and Israel from that of closest of allies to one in which there is an absence of trust. Our closest ally has been demeaned and slandered, held responsible for our problems in Afghanistan and Iraq and elsewhere in the Middle East.

Pakistan is still an ally, until obama messes THAT one up, and Iran, well….it seems that your little mothership, the UN, is not getting it done with sanctions….they have threatened Israel, and though you feel that they are not our closest ally, ernesto, even though they ARE our closest ally in the Middle East. Wasting more ‘blood and treasure’ is where we are at BECAUSE of our president, who would rather hold hands and sing songs with Iran, rather than put them in their place….our president has shown weakness and this is where we are at.

Maybe it has to be the USA.
Maybe Obama will do it this October. In October it could help him hold Congress.
I think it’s the only reason Obama might do it.

A ‘reasonable’ coward, you mean? If so, I tend to be with you.
But I have no trust in McCain.

I am urging all Zionist and Christian forces who are working with Benjamin Netanyahu against the Islamic Holy Forces of Allah to submit immediately.
Otherwise, we will hold them responsible for their actions. Any attempt to fight the Islamic Holy forces of Allah is pointless. We are committed to putting Israel and the rest of the world under our jurisdiction.
You cannot overcome the Islamic Holy Forces of Allah now that we have our brother, Imam Obama, in control of your country. Any individual or group that tries to fight the Islamic Holy Forces of Allah will now be humiliated at the White House. With the help of our brother, Imam Obama, the Islamic Holy Forces of Allah will easily overcome Benjamin Netanyahu and his Zionist, Christian, Infidel and Hotair stooges. Allah willing.
The great dream of Islam will soon come true. Muslims dream to see flags that read: “There is no God but Allah” fluttering in the wind over the White House, the Temple Mount and Haram al-Sharif, and over Hotair, Allah willing.
