Video: The compliance costs of the tax code

posted at 11:36 am on April 13, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

As Americans rush to tax accountants and preparation firms this week to finalize their tax returns, it’s a good time to consider the costs of compliance. The Center for Freedom and Prosperity offers a new entry in its Econ 101 video series that details these costs, not just on paying third parties for preparation but the systemic cost to the economy each year. What are these costs?  Consider the 7.6 billion man-hours needed for federal tax compliance, which equates to 3.8 million full-time jobs.  Tax compliance is one of the largest industries in the US.

“But I do my own taxes,” some will say, “and so it doesn’t cost me anything.”  Want to bet?  Every product and service consumers buy have these extra costs embedded in the retail price, and not just from the manufacturer, but also from the distributor and every other middleman.  The total cost is around $340 billion per year, which is an anchor on economic growth and productivity — and that’s not even considering the fact that the tax code has gotten so complex that not even the IRS can accurately answer questions about it any longer.

It costs everyone, as the instructor explains:

What has this administration done to correct this?  They will add thousands of more IRS employees to do to health care what they’ve already done to tax compliance.

Fair Tax

the Coondawg on April 13, 2010 at 11:50 AM

Oh, don’t we wish. Maybe we can get this presenter to do one for the FairTax? Couldn’t hurt!

Flat tax, no deductions. Its the only way to really cut costs.

The “Fair Tax” is a nightmare of twisted incentives. Didn’t it originally get started by people looking to game it to their advantage?

Where’s the nerdy dude in his seersucker suit? He’s probably off doing…I DON’T CARE. Love her twang.

From the College of William and Larry?
Huzzah!
Actually the video makes an important point – we all pay when money is taken out of the economy.
You pay either from direct costs on you lifestyle or the the lost economic opportunity to the country.

She can force me to comply with just about anything she wants.

Brian1972 on April 13, 2010 at 1:38 PM

Looking thru this thread, I see very little talk about tax codes. A lot of talk about how hot this girl is.

I think the comments themselves prove my point. Serious issues lose value when you try to front them with big breasted women showing cleavage.

Sorry for wanting youtube viewers to get a serious message in a serious way. I’ll try to go shoot myself now for daring to think that would be a good idea.

Because we all know that people on Youtube were going to watch this video if the normal guy was doing the talking. It’s smart, she knows her stuff, and a lot of the video is her narrating charts.

Blech.

Can I get my tax information from someone whose look isn’t screaming, “I’m a dumb bimbo, look at my breasts!”

TheBlueSite on April 13, 2010 at 11:56 AM

Why are you so afraid to receive tax information from an attractive woman?

Fighton03 on April 13, 2010 at 1:56 PM

Down with the Fair tax…FLAT tax is the way to go.

Brian on April 13, 2010 at 2:00 PM

The Fair tax is not fair, its a sham. Fact is the income tax started out small and flat. There is nothing in the fair tax that prevents it being just as complex and corrupt.
The issue isn’t the when its collected, its the tax itself. The most fair is a low and flat tax.
God has tithing, 10% aka flat tax, so in my opinion the federal government isn’t greater than God, so should not ask for more than 10% from its citizens.
The government has become an obese giant who refuses to go on any diet…its time to starve the beast.

Works for me. Fair, Flat, I don’t care as long as it’s less expensive and not used as an instrument for social engineering and corrupt favors to supporters of the politicians.

Sorry to disagree with you, but do you care to back up that assertion?

Hiwa Alaghebandian

I think we ought to keep an eye on this young lady, as she’s likely destined for great things.

It’s funny. I see a constant thread among a lot of commenters here. Immature name-calling children

TheBlueSite on April 13, 2010 at 12:39 PM

Strangely, I agree with you… at least in pointing out how you acted like an immature name-calling child… to use your own words! That makes you a hypocrite.

If you had paid attention, you would have realized that she attends William & Mary University, and is presenting detailed information regarding the complexity of the tax code system and why it is a drain on our country. Why should she “uglify” herself just so jerks like you will take her seriously?

I am the father of another attractive conservative young lady. She is currently working 3 part-time jobs to pay her way through medical school. Are you going to suggest to me that she needs to “uglify” herself before you would take her seriously as a doctor?

Personally, I’m encouraged when a talented young Conservative, like this young lady, can present detailed information (with sources!) in such a way that idiot trolls like you can’t even respond to the content of her message.

Excuse me, but if it takes a good looking woman with a nice set of breasts to education people, then I’m all for it.
Bcs angry hairy feminists & sexless, metrosexual beta & omega males teaching us this crap hasn’t gotten the message through.
I don’t mind telling you that I learned more from my ‘hot’ male professors in college than the ugly creepy ones.

Badger40 on April 13, 2010 at 5:01 PM

Reminds me of Fox news. Beauty queens deliver the news there, too, and for the same reason. It draws viewers. Personally, I think the young lady in the video is a nice combination of beauty and brains. I applaud her.

NNtrancer on April 13, 2010 at 5:40 PM

I finally figured it out.The left can’t understand that a beautiful woman can be smart And their feminist shills say Conservatives are misogynists!Liberalism really is a mental defect.
Ugly?-she must be smart
Beautiful?-of course she is stupid.

DDT on April 13, 2010 at 7:25 PM

I know, let’s add tax compliance as a tax write off. Incentive to keep the tax code simple. Ah, who am I kidding.

Exactly! Couldn;t agree more.
Though I must admit, watching this presentation,
‘flat’ is the farthest thing from my mind.
